I know it may sound silly. But my Aunt who is 84 had a watch that her husband gave her that needed a new battery. It sat for years because no one could get the back off. This video saved the day. Thanks for it.

I opened my Fossil with a pair of scissors that were a little square that fit right in the screw back. No scratches. But if you worry, you could put some tape on the back.

PLEASE BE AWARE - Some watches appear to be screw-backs but are actually snap-backs. My was, I found out after nearly killing myself trying to screw the back I managed to get a good grip with the pliers but still could not budge it using all the force I could muster. However I then noticed a little ridge which looked like it was designed to take a knife under so I got my pen knife, put it under the ridge and flipped it open first time!!
Please thumb me up as others might have the same problem, it might save some a lot of grief, I spent half an hour trying to screw the back off mine, but it snapped off easily in seconds!!

Thanks for your video. I bought a special tool to remove a screw back/waterproof watch which was frankly useless but with your needle-nose pliers idea it worked perfectly and because you can grip with the pliers laterally you have less chance of scratching the back! I have now used this with two watches to great success - thanks!

Thank-you for your helpful video! I have a Timex (snap back) watch. I carefully removed the back with a small pocket knife. After replacing the battery, I placed the watch upside down on a thin foam pad. I then popped the back on with a small vitamin bottle, bottle cap on top of watch back. Luckily, I had a bottle lid that was virtually the same diameter as the watch back. I didn't think it would be so easy! All the best.

With snap-backs it's a good trick to make a felt tip pen mark on the back and the frame side where you found the spot that allowed prising the back off. Then when you come to put it back, align the back to the same spot it was removed from (rotationally correct) and it will usually snap back more easily than if you try to get it to snap in in a different orientation around the frame.

In 1961, my brother bought me a good quality 'Camy' watch, while he was in the Army, in Belgium. It had a impressed message on the back, celebrating the first Sputnik in space. A few years later, it needed a service. I couldn't locate a dealership for it, so had to settle for a 'local' jeweler. He badly damaged the back, trying to remove it, saying he needed SPECIAL tools to remove the back, so had to use something else ( hammer and chissel I think). I still have the Watch, but despite many attempts, have never located a replacement back panel.

    Thanks for the video.
For anyone thinking doing this yourself for your snap back watch:
Things to consider and difficulties you may encounter include:
    1. Finding a suitable tool/ knife to pry with.
My old leatherman had a good slim blade, so i could pry the snap back against the frame/start of wristband (was also Esprit watch). There was a tiny ledge in the upper right corner of the cover.
There is a good chance of injuring yourself with the slipping knife as well.
    2. Finding a replacement battery, the old one was SR621SW and i just happened have a L621, which should be equivalent, but would not stay place in the watch. Measured with a digital caliber, the old one was 2.09 millimeters, new one 2.19 millimeters. The extra tenth of manufacturing error(?) made the battery not stay in it's place, there was a tiny clip which would not reach top of the battery. Filed the new battery down to 2.10 -2.13 millimeters with the leatherman i had, went to it's place. (ace fix)
    3. Getting the snap lid back on.
The watch i worked on was very stubborn, and the seal also was needed to be placed very carefully. I don't have huge fingertip power and it would just pop from another side if i got other side to hold. Ended up using a small tabletop vice with some post-its to protect the watch. (careful or you'll end up buying a new watch for your girlfriend). It didn't really pop back with this approach, just was pushed back to it's place nicely.
    4. You might ruin the gasket/rubber seal and water resistance as well and still have to take it to the shop.(or waste your time hunting for a replacement)
If you don't have the proper tools and a replacement battery at hand, it's not worth the hassle to diy this one, instead save cutting yourself and some time.
Overall took an hour, mostly getting the lid back on, which i could have spent more wisely, for e.g. drinking beer. :)
But I think I'll order a tool kit/gaskets from some chinese web shop for future repairs. I wouldn't fix a high end watch, but for cheap watches this might be economical with proper tools and so.
