Making A Gothic Victorian Evening Bodice

  • Today I finally dive into some silk taffeta as I make a mid 1880's evening bodice. I modified the Truly Victorian pattern from my last video to work for a dinner bodice instead, with a more open neckline and shorter sleeves. Then I embellished the life out of it of course! Should I make more beaded cicadas?

First, a disclaimer: So many of you have kindly offered to send me things, including vintage items you may have inherited, and I am so honored you would think of me and of course I do adore vintage treasures, however, unfortunately I only have so much storage space currently! So there is a chance that if something just wont work for me, or doesn't fit me etc, that I may not be able to keep all of your lovely things. Please only send things if you are okay with the possibility that I may donate items I just cannot keep. If you would prefer I put things that I can't keep into the TCH Etsy shop to help raise funds for me and the channel, please specify this in a note or letter in your parcel. Thank you so much!

Funnily enough rayon was discovered in the 1880s so technically, technically, the binding is accurate.

The project is everything my little goth soul desires and it is producing a stunning garment, but most of all, your passion for this project shows through in every way and it has been a joy to watch! I actually had tears in my eyes when you did the reveal!! Please do more webs between the rows of leaves down the frontman of the bodice. Epic. The brooch just blew my mind and yes I would love to see more of that. You look ravishing in the bodice. Incredible makeup and your skin seems very gothic and pale. Hah! If you are doing things with bugs, you should totally make a bug scientist outfit for it! I hope you aren’t in too much permanent pain, but I think your sacrifice is worth it for your end result! And I forgot to mention the back bodice bat points! Swoon!!! The B Roll, the music, the project scope are so impressive! Incredible. We are not worthy. You are a goddess.

OMG😍 These are stunning and you look beautiful 😍.
I have a tip for sewing while in agony... or to prevent the agony. Bring the work up to you on big over-stuffed pillows. Prop your own arms up with soft bed pillows to support. This can be done on the sofa using a big sofa pillow to raise your work. Lighting is key as is learning to isolate your arm and back muscles to hold them relaxed while using your hands actively to sew. I was taught this by my occupational therapist who hooked me up to electrodes for biofeedback while isolating and relaxing back, neck and arms. We have body memory so as soon as you find and learn YOUR personal technique you can re-invoke it at will.
    Hope you feel better soon❤️

Stretching out big time before sitting down to hand sew helps a lot with the hurting back. Take breaks to stretch every half hour or so. It really helps a lot. Soaking in epsom salts in the bath along with Dr. Teals's epsom salt and menthal bath soak does wonders. Something that I do when I get off of work, when doing hotel housekeeping.

And the black beaded beauty you created just blows my mind. I'm so sorry you are sore from the project. The creative process can be very painful sometimes. I ended up with a very sore wrist after completing an embroidery piece last year. And I recall a sore neck for a while from intense work on hand cartooning. This is an amazing project, and my tip for back and shoulder pain is to stand at regular intervals and exercise your shoulders and neck, stretch, circle your shoulders to release the lactate acid in your muscles. ❤️

I really enjoyed this, exceptional results!! The detail on the stitching was excellent!! I have used an elastic back brace in the past, it helped when working on projects while sitting.

Here I am enjoying your video with my early morning coffee. I am about to mock up a pattern for my 3yr old granddaughter. She has taken an interest in The Trolls. I found some sparkle, turquoise fabric, at Walmart. When time allows, I will be putting together a dress that will be reminiscent of Poppy Troll. Thanks for sharing your beautiful work!

Absolutely gorgeous! Watching you modify patterns is inspiring. You make it look accessible.
I also hunch when sewing - usually after a day at my machine I need Icy hot patches and gentle yoga to recover. Putting a throw pillow between my back and the chair reminds me to sit back and helps - when I remember to do it!

When doing a lot of forward work with your body and hands I find the best, very best release for the muscles is to reach up over head, slide your hands up a wall and or pulling down on a bar that is over head. It Works!!

I got my Rowenta iron 2nd hand at a thrift store some years ago, and it's performed flawlessly. I hope you're as happy with yours! This series of videos is great. The brooch is dreamy.

This bodice is absolutely beautiful 💚! It’s so exciting watch you pursue your dream projects and execute them so beautifully. Your channel has been such an inspiration to me ever since I found it and I cannot contain my excitement when I see a new video is up. What I most appreciate is that I can feel the pain of your work (if that makes sense?). I don’t get fooled by editing and quick cuts into thinking that these projects are at all easy or thrown together. I can see the painstaking amount of work that goes into each project. It probably helps that you also narrate your videos so honestly to reflect what you were really thinking as you made them. It helps me stay grounded when I feel like my own projects are taking too long or just not coming out as I’d like them to. I take these lessons to heart and I keep going. Thank you Bianca for all that you do!

That colour and whole entourage.. it suits you and compliments you So well! Just Beautiful, even Stunning! 🤗
Know that all the pain, sweat and probably tears of joy after finishing 😉😜😁 is totally worth it all, I just wished I'd could do it, had the figure for it and.. the skills to do my hair and gorgeous make-up like you can!
Thank you for all, it was a joy to see the end result, hopefully someday you take it outside and show it in natural light, that I would love to see one day 🤗👌

Gorgeous! When you talked about getting a more sustainable posture for hand sewing I was reminded of a documentary on samurai swords that I watched. In the very last step the sword is polished by hand and is a time consuming and labor intensive process. I remember that the sword polisher said it took him ten years to learn how to sit properly. Needless to say, that would not have been a career for me.
