Making A Crimson Peak Housecoat // So Much Flannel

- It's time for another housecoat, and this one was just staring at me from the pages of Pinterest as I was researching the Mandragora gown. The adorable grey coat from Crimson Peak...but in cotton flannel! Am I tempted to make a few more of these in other colors? I'll wait until I have a proper Victorian house to haunt perhaps!

But wait there's more! A PO BOX finally wahoo!
First, a disclaimer: So many of you have kindly offered to send me things, including vintage items you may have inherited, and I am so honored you would think of me and of course I do adore vintage treasures, however, unfortunately I only have so much storage space currently! So there is a chance that if something just wont work for me, or doesn't fit me etc, that I may not be able to keep all of your lovely things. Please only send things if you are okay with the possibility that I may donate items I just cannot keep. If you would prefer I put things that I can't keep into the TCH Etsy shop to help raise funds for me and the channel, please specify this in a note or letter in your parcel. Thank you so much!

Thank you for watching!
So that underside of the cape bit...you might almost call that a...Crimson Peek. ;)
@RubyLovesRocket - .^_^.
Very niiice! 😄
Your story about not experiencing crushes as a kid and feeling like you had to pick somebody to have a crush on rings so true with me. And then I laughed out loud at "We've all seen Kate Beckinsale." SO TRUE.
Everyone needs a dressing gown that sweeps behind them to eat ice cream from the carton.
Exactlllly!
"I don't plan on wearing heals around the house"
This sounds like a job for.... Marabou slippers!
Just what I thought!
Too bad no one makes nice ones anymore! They only have uhh...fetishy ones. I'd like a lower non stiletto heel and in mint green thanks
@@TheClosetHistorian I have some not crappy and not crazy high ones from Frederick's of Hollywood. They are super cute
😂
I will never think about flannel the same way again! Thanks for sharing.
Also, the "There's a bit of magic in sewing. I'm sorry." statement may be my fave sewing related quote ever.
This coat is very "I'm going to wash one load of laundry today" *proceeds to wash the house coat only* and I'm honestly here for it, the smaller number of individual pieces to wear around the house the better imo
What a fabulous dressing gown. A very glamorous way of enjoying a cozy cup of tea and reading a book while looking a million bucks
Thank you Gina! Just wish I had the Victorian library to match!
Yyyyeeeeessssssss. I really wish the movie wasn't so twisted because the costumes are juuuuuust UGH. Perfection
I LITERALLY JUST MADE THIS COAT!!!
(except mine is being used as an actual coat and not a housecoat)
When you said, “If you were to answer the door…” I decided I needed to make me one! 🌈🌈🦋🦋 My current robe is a 1970’s pattern using a self quilted bedspread from the same era. It’s amazingly psychedelic.
Your current robe sounds glorious to me!
please post pictures montage on your channel!!! I want to see this!!!!
I emphasize SO MUCH with the 'choosing a crush' thing! Turned out I was looking at the wrong gender and had a crush on my best friend the entire time, but I devinetly chose a random boy as a pre-teen!
Lovely dressing gown by the way!
I was about to comment the same thing! I picked the least objectionable boy in my class and went 'cool, I guess he's my crush now'.
Turns out I was a baby lesbian, and that is not how crushes work.
empathize?
@@e_viola Yes, that's what I meant, English isn't my first language, sorry.
I did the same thing! Except after identifying as "maybe lesbian???" for a few years, I figured out I was asexual. I'm romantically attracted to women though, so I was half right, at least :D
@@alexismontez4230 Me too! Asexual with some demiromantic tendencies, but then I also figured out that nonbinary and many trans people are fantastic and the only thing that remains completely unappealing is straight cis-het guys :'D
I just made my own "crimson peak" inspired housecoat last month, more along the lines of the green butterfly . If I'm stuck at home I'm gonna do it in fabulous lounge wear.
...and now I have this extremely vivid mental image of thousands of historically-inspired sewists floofing around home in their pandemic lockdowns in fabulous OTT housecoats!! 😂 This definitely needs to be expanded as some kind of wider channel crossover - "Now featuring the fabulous faff-about-wear everyone sewed during the plague era!" 😄
I totally feel you on the growing up ace and not knowing that crushes were like a real thing other people experienced. I really thought we were all just pretending 😂
That reminds me of growing up bisexual and assuming everyone else is too but we just don't mention it for some reason. 😄 Here's to all of us figuring ourselves out and not caring what's expected of us! 💚
I felt the exact same way growing up aromantic!
Hahahaha I’m straight and still think everyone is pretending 😂😂🤷🏻♀🤷🏻♀🤷🏻♀💗💗
@@stormyweather2773 LOL SAME!!
I'm in the back half of my 30s and I still think its fake. Like, aesthetically I can be like "this person is pleasing to my eye" but I have zero interest in them otherwise. I am just going to be a cranky old ace person in a rocker with my crochet.
This is not “just a housecoat” this a spectacular and magnificent house coat. The pattern on the fabric is gorgeous and on video it looks more like velvet and expensive. I think that navy and turquoise would be stunning!
Thank you!
I'm actually saving my "fabric confetti" (at least the cotton stuff) to make my own tailors ham, haha.
the talk about being ace and not understanding crushes hit home. never really understood it and thought it just meant that you got along with that person and enjoyed hanging out...
I hope everyone who comes to your door tells you how beautiful that house coat is.
Ha! I'm more of hide until they leave type of gremlin usually anyhow 😂
This housecoat is wonderful and I am green with envy and considering buying 14 yards of flannel. It doesn’t look too complicated either but that might just be because you are magic.
Thank you!
That looks so gloriously snuggly and delightfully fancy for swanning around the house.
Thank you!
The way that I always come back to this video and feel the NEED to sew a dramatic house dress coat like this just to lounge at my house.
Puffy sleeve housecoats are just what we need during these times😍✨
Honestly this housecoat looks hella comfy and is, at the same time, one of the prettiest things I've ever seen.
Thank you Holly!
"I don't like disturbing visuals." Yes, this exactly!! I absolutely get it. Honestly, I have to take half a Xanax at night so I can actually fall asleep without my mind wandering off into disturbing visuals. I have to take other things as well, but those are for falling asleep and staying asleep as I, too, suffer from insomnia. That is on top of being a night owl. Good times.
It feels like maybe this is the disadvantage of having a very vivid visual imagination...? Once things go in the eyeballs, they don't really go away 😒 Even reading very edgy text-based content tends to stick, although not quite as tenaciously as audiovisual media?
Makes me wonder if strongly aural learners experience a similar phenomenon with things they hear...? 🤔
Now this is how a house coat should look! I can see this as a suit, the skirt having a matching peplum to the yoke flounce....in the purple and lime green or dark green outer and fuchsia lining. xxx
Oh dear... there is also black and green!! 😍 I am sorely tempted to make a reversible Slytherin housecoat. 💚🖤
Always always wear this when answering the door for Scouts selling stuff.
The ace puzzlement over crushes is highly relatable. 😂
I am SO in love with the mismatched socks thing you've got going on there...it's awesome!!!!! The housecoat is to DIE for, but it's those socks that sell the whole thing for me. I can't wait to start sashaying around my house in my glamourous new housecoat and mismatched socks....I'll finally be trendy.
Thank you! I can't keep socks matched, that's asking too much in life 😂
Oh…your makeup and hair this week is absolutely stunning, and your housecoat..just adds to the beauty of it all…if that’s possible. Beautiful job, everything looks so stunning from you, to your background and the beautiful fabric choice…the list is endless…
Thank you Jennifer!
"Solve a mystery or poison, someone." LMAO! You crack me up, Bianca. I love everything you make; I can't think of one thing that I didn't like. I would not mind one bit if you decided to put your own line of patterns
out...seriously...think about it...please.
xoxo's Sandie
Thank you Sandie!
Brava Bianca! I love how this came together! 100% gives me Vampire-on-her-day-off vibes and I'm so here for it!
Aesthetically I love Crimson Peak, but I am, in fact, a baby with regards to spooky things! One of these days I'll get up the nerve to actually sit and watch it but until then I'll just have to admire the stills and other people working on lovely projects about it!
Thank you! it took me ages to finally watch it for the same reason 😅
100% relatable!! The snippets I've seen in TH-cam analyses of its costuming and themes were definitely more than enough 'creepy factor' for me? But I completely understand why the fashion side of it is inspiring some remarkable projects!
I always have to watch some parts of her video twice because they relax me so much I never know where I fell asleep.
okay, THE EYESHADOW THOUGH!! I love that color. I don't think I've seen a purpley-silver like that before. I'm aware that it's probably reflecting something, but the effect is still gorgeous
Thank you! The shade is called UV from Clionadh Cosmetics clionadhcosmetics.com/products/uv
Beautiful skills! Amazing garment! I love how you model your lovely pieces. You have a flair and knack! Delightful to watch. Thank you for sharing ❤
Thank you Sherry!
I love the way you talk to your past self as if she can hear you I live that gown I can imagine in it a lovely flowing satin looking very luxurious you have inspired me
Thank you Trudi!
Regarding the boy and the snickers: Valentine's is SUCH a weird holiday when you've never had a partner, or a crush really. They try and rebrand it to be about all types of love but it just feels strange. I don't know what my point is here, but as a fellow aspec, I feel you.
The costumes are just one of the numerous aspects of this movie that I love, and your take on this coat is beautiful!
Thank you!
Off topic sort of, but my favorite housecoat in my life was when I was 4 and had my tonsils taken out. White flannel nightgown with red narrow stripes, the yoke said, "Twinkle twinkle little star" and had rhinestones here and there. The housecoat was red quilted fabric, red buttons with a rhinestone in the center, and a music box in one of the pockets. 1966 glamor, or I thought it was. I also thought they were real diamonds. I had forgotten about that.
So I made the gothic glam housecoat and it's possibly my favorite thing I've ever made and I practically live in it when I'm home, and now you're telling me I have a reason/excuse to make ANOTHER housecoat?? With THEE best aesthetic of all time?? You are and continue to be an absolute legend, thank you.
Thank you Breanna! We all deserve to be cozy and glam at the same time 😂
This coat has been on my "I REALLY WANT ONE" list for a long time! Now I can live vicariously though this video :)
(and also finally plan to make one myself)
I would recommend "I am the pretty thing that live in the house". It's a spooky ghost story that takes place in a house that was built in the early 1800's. Hope it's not too spooky! 😊
It’s soo pretty! It’s almost reversible since its fully lined but that could only be me who feels that way.
Yes! Especially since she sewed the ruffle on last
Thank you! Without the ruffle/cape thing and with a long unattached belt it would be yes!
I remember my Grandma had that sewing machine. She made Barbie clothes for me and my sister. Woman never used a pattern, go figure. God Rest Her Soul she was fantastic. I think you definitely won the housecoat challenge.
As an insomniac i really felt that. I too have to be mindful of what i am watching or listen to, especially before going to bed. Your housecoat looks stunning and suits you perfectly ❤
Your makeup and hairstyle is absolutely stunning in this video. And that coat/housecoat
I love her whole ensemble.. hopefully one day I will create something as gorgeous. So where did you find the B5152 housecoat pattern? Yours sounds like it will be very elegant and glamorous....
Thank you Marah!
It’s never about ‘needing’ …but ‘the want’ is real !!! 💗💗I’m sure it will look amazing !
It looks like velvet and is flannel, I need it.
As another single gal i love listening to your thoughts on love and relationships. You're a hoot!
That fabric is fantastic! I love how the housecoat came out. I’m perpetually cold even when it’s not actually that cold in my house. Might need to make myself a Victorian styled house coat now.
Thank you Flynn!
LOVE IT! OOH needs fluffy heeled slippers
I think you have me 100% sold on doing mine again in cotton flannel, it seems so easy to work with. I love the housecoat you made and hope you get to answer the door often in it!
Thank you Haley!
This was so helpful! This coat is living rent free in my head since I've seen the movie back when it came out. I will probably do mine as a winter coat.
Anyways, this was super fun to watch and the result is grandiose. Love it!
Thank you!
I rarely comment on youtube videos... However I have to say: your channel couldn't get better but here we are! :)
I recently subbed to your channel because of your epic quality videos and one of my fav film costumes are from Crimson Peak. So to see this pop up in my recommendation... Huh, heavens, I nearly had a heart attack from the excitement you have given to me!
Welcome! You are going to really enjoy, Bianca's Channel.
Thank you Vivien!
Love this housecoat and love your hair!
Thank you!
Love the hair and make-up today.
Great Housecoat too!
Thank you!
It's really interesting to see your process of turning block pattern pieces into a custom pattern. The fabric engineering soothes my soul
Thank you Mary!
Mother of Pearl, that's one heckuva housecoat! Mrrrreow, such swish, such shape!
You've got me browsing cotton flannel now
Your little spin at the end was divine, Bianca! I'm loving this housecoat, how decadent 😍
Thank you Jane!
Thank you! Me too. Already having enough time getting some sleep without the disturbing visuals.
I'm not one for horror movies but I enjoyed crimson peak. I fully admit I watched it for Tom Hiddleston ( I may be Aro ace but I have eyes and aesthetic beauty is still a thing) and and goths content. If you like gothic-ish visuals I'm gonna recommend another Hiddleston film, only lovers left alive. It's a modern take on a vampire movie but not overtly so and is a visual feast. It's also got Mia wasikowska( cp actress) , tilda Swindon and Anton yelchin.
Oh yes I love that film, and the soundtrack!
I have never listened to a more entertaining voice-over in my life. also this house coat looks so gorgeous, I love the color combination so much!
Thank you!
Always "like" as soon as I click on a video... I always know it's going to be a gem! 👩🍳💋
Thank you Leah! ❤
darted to princess conversion??? *BOOF!!* mind blown... thank you for the possibilities, I need to try reversing this now...
Oh, and I used the princess seam kefta pattern as a base to make a wool housecoat in January, I screwed up the neckline by widening it across the back and ended up fixing it by piecing in some fabric to bring in the neckline a bit and then hiding the resulting correction with a capelet :) I also eliminated the waist seam because I don't need extra bulk (I'm bulky enough) and also I was pattern matching plaid so figured the waist was a good point to have a wide purple band in the plaid pattern.
I love it!! I’m currently making the CP nightgown and wrapper and now I’m obsessed with this house coat! Lol I also absolutely noticed the pin cushion before you mentioned it and thought it was so cool. My sewing room is rather horror themed, it would be very cool in there! 🧠
Make a voodoo dall pin cushion. Uhhh... no spell attached of course.
@@paulaj7682 lol. I actually have a couple of Evil Apple pincushions I made years ago.
Thank you Maria! All The Crimson Peak nightwear is definitely goals
I am going to need this in emerald green, lady, lol. Gorgeous!
Thank you! Can't beat green!
@@TheClosetHistorian You're welcome! You absolutely can't! Happy Valentine's Day!
19:03 I heard "gourd skirt" and had some interesting mental images trying to figure out what that might look like
Lady Tremaine but make it 1890’s: PERFECTION! And yet I would watch a Maleficent version of this.
Thank you Stephanie!
This housecoat is FABulous! It’s elegant, decadently ‘fashionable’ and STILL just a WARM housecoat that can be worn every day! I LOVE it!!
Thank you Debi!
Now you have something glamorous to wear around the house. Love it!
Thank you Linda!
The color choices of this flannel!!! 😍😍😍
Thank you! I love this velvet look flannel, and it's very soft after it's washed ❤
Not only is it beautiful, your housecoat looks so comfortable and cozy. 😊
Thank you Debbie! Very cozy indeed!
OH OH THE VIBES ARE IMMACULATE.
Merci 😂✨
Ohh I've always wanted a dressing gown like that since I was a teenager. And you look stunning with your hair up like that.
Thank you!
"they would think youre a Vampire"
Thats a plus If anything!
Definitely 🧛♀️❤
This turned out so cool! Yes…..tons of fabric! Wow!
Thank you Robin!
I love the table of doom! That’s where you perform magic…
I enjoy your non-sewing commentary as you go along. Last night, my husband and I were talking about our daughter who has also never had a crush, and he said, "not even Kate Beckinsale?". Must be a universal experience.
Nothing says comfy like mismatched socks! I love that it flannel, peak coziness.
I am also more of a Maleficent type, but this look makes me want to embrace my Lady Tremaine side. The capelet is epic.
Thank you!
Without the cape and with a different closure, this would be fully reversible! Looks super cosy ☺️
Hi Bianca!! I absolutely adore this gorgeous housecoat.. You’ve outdone yourself on this.. You look amazingly stunning in your Crimson Peak Housecoat….
💜💜💜🧵🧵🧵
Thank you Deana! 💜
I'm glad I'm not the only one who's done the tape thing with the plate on the machine, since there's no seamline guides
The perfect bedtime story 😃
Just the thing to wear while writing deep into the night!
Thank you for this! Again full of sensitivity, irony, and humanity. (Besides the high standard of sewing craftswomanship) love the 35.44, hem hem….
Thank you!
I can't believe you haven't got a sweet heart I really love this housecoat the material is great really looks like velvet beautiful
Thank you Carol!
Thanks for having me over!
Good Lord! That's one of the most gorgeous things I've ever seen 😍
Thank you!
That coat is gorgeous. Love the colours. Another item added to my "must make at some point" list, but shorter.
Looking into historical ish things I can make that I can wear in my electric wheelchair. Love victorian, but the amount of fabric and padding means its not a good idea. Shortening the skirts wouldn't look right. Might get away with regency and shorter skirts plus the short stays are a bonus. Viking period I know i can do shorter. Just squares, rectangles and triangles.
Right going to binge watch some more of your videos.
Thank you Nanette!
I actually want all of the outfits from crimson peak 😩 so beautiful 😍
I'm completely fascinated watching you draft a pattern rom scratch with the measurements in your head! Everyone else I've seen has used a mannequin to draft a pattern and mock-up! YOU ARE AMAZING!
Thank you Nathan!
I’d never seen that movie till I saw this video. I’m glad I’ve seen both now. ☺️ Beautiful house coat!
Thank you!
Oh shit girl!!!! I love so many garments from this show. Stunning. Love it! Thank you for all you do.
Thank you Shevuan!
This is a magnificent housecoat! It goes on my list of future sewing projects
Thank you!
I love that you wear odd socks too. All the best people do. I bet this is lovely and cosy, it looks very comfy and warm. Best wishes Heather xx
Thank you Heather!
You are my favourite seeing TH-camr! The best mix of watching you draft patterns and sew. The housecoat came out amazing 🖤
Thank you! ❤
That part about crushes was sooooooooooooo relatable lol
If you're looking for an aesthetic and atmospheric Gothic ghost story with (as far as I remember) no terribly disturbing visuals, I recommend The Others. I haven't seen it in a minute, but I imagine it holds up pretty well!
Poison somebody....I'm DYING!!! As usual......amazing!!! LOVE!
Thank you Brenda!
