Yeah, which is kind of short sided on Disney’s part, considering people aren’t going to keep their subscription if there’s no additional good content However, the one advantage Doctor Who has this year (over last year) is that Disney+ has a whole season of Who ready to watch, after the Christmas special (plus the 60th specials, which they had last year, as well). Plus, skeleton crew falls into the family friendly sci-fi genre. So, hopefully it has a good retention rate this year.
@@HappyBob701 it feels like anything that isn't an absolute masterpiece is utter garbage to you people. There's no potential middle ground whatsoever. There's far worse Doctor Who out there
And that's the point. The Disney Plus figures are from a worldwide audience. There's a lot of people who can only watch Doctor Who on Disney Plus so of course the numbers are gonna be high, it doesn't mean it's doing well it just means these countries have access to it.
@BigEvil02 'Of course the numbers are going to be high', that doesn't mean it's doing well just because 'a lot of people' are watching. I think you've invented the sour puss paradox.
I’m in the US and it’s up to 5 now so yeah, most definitely not in trouble or dying! If Disney+ makes a dumb decision that’s their fault not the Doctor Who team!
But it being number 5 on one day doesn't make it a huge success. It depends on the competition. What are 1-4 on that chart? It also depends on how many people are watching it. Jupiter's Legacy was number one worldwide on the Netflix charts for a whole week and stayed in the top ten for a lot longer than that because it didn't have enough people watching it to make it financially viable.
I enjoyed the Christmas special. After all, it's just a bit of fun. I also continue to enjoy your channel, so keep it coming, and have a very happy new year.
This is what I've been saying. We only have one story coming out from the figures which is the British and that doesn't say anything when the viewing figures for Disney Plus! aren't included. The fact it is doing well elsewhere is important because that is what will keep the show going because that is what Disney is after. I also understand it was No. 1 in Brazil of all places
Enjoyed the pragmatic positivity of your report. Makes a refreshing change from the angst-ridden or hateful commentaries and prophecies so easily found elsewhere … I’m not one for engaging myself in fan-fuelled controversies. I know zilch about viewing habits in India, Pakistani or viewing. I’d be surprised if Western franchises performed significantly there. I hope someone can answer that!
As to why it jumped to #5 in the US today, Americans don't really watch a lot of new TV (or any TV, really) during Xmas like the Brits do (the UK obsession with TV ratings and music chart positions at Xmas is so, so odd to us), so a late spike from US viewers should be expected.
At the moment it is N° 5 in Austria (with home alone in first). I don’t think English speaking population is too relevant for this ranking, because for all the countries you checked (and more) it releases with a dubbed version in their national language. While I watch the original version of the show, most people I know would probably watch the German version! :) I’m so glad for the Disney deal I really hope it stays around for a while, after watching for 10+ years I finally have an easy way to access Doctor Who and at the same time support it monetarily to make sure the show stays on air.
But it isn't counting the actual ratings. We only know the chart position not how many people watched it. There isn't much competition at the moment on Disney Plus only Marvels What If and the rather good Star Wars Skeleton Crew. Unfortunately we know Skeleton Crew is underperforming in terms of viewership and its ahead of Doctor Who in the USA chart for this week.
The question is, what are the overall figures & the percentages ? Coming 3rd when 5 million people watched Disney + this week is average, coming 3rd when 20 people watched Disney + this week is a disaster. Dr Who can reach its glory days of 10 million + per episode, but not until this DEI crap stops, Davies is replaced & some decent scriptwriters are brought in.
An analytics company which checks how shows do on streamers, showed that Season One did incredibly well in predominately black countries. Reaching number one in the charts, sustaining that high placement for several days. Is it something as simple as the lead being black? No idea. But an interesting fact. Disney might well see that as good news for worldwide use of their platform, and possibly seen in new subscribers?
There’s over 3million Disney plus subscribers in Australia. Doctor used to average about 25000 in tv ratings on a good day. Yet somehow it’s number one of Disney plus.
Just as point of interest, todY is Saturday December 28th, 2024 and Joy to the World is STILL NUMBER ONE on Disney+ here in Australia. Will be interesting to see what it to s in a week. To be honest I was worried about it too but not because of Ncuti's casting, but because of Disney+ and their involvement. Dr Who, for me, has always been an escape. I didn't want Disney+ to make it too "Star Wars' like with too much of the fancy special effects. As always. I will keep watching Dr Who no matter what - I am even really happy with re-runs !! So sick of the negative people!! I just know - like most people - few of us could write anything better than Moffat or RTD.
The Ratings are lower than last year's and its brief Number 1 position then didn't get Disney to splash more cash on a third series did it. Series 2 ratings will decide.
This is VERY promising indeed! If Season 2 continues this trend I think Disney will absolutely renew the deal! Though I must say I swear Disney+ didn't used to have a Top 10 shows on their app, is this a new thing they added?
Yeah I wanna say they added it last month? Definitely wasn’t on there when doctor who was airing on it in the summer. It’ll be interesting to see if it can stay in the top 10 during season 2.
Disney only cares about people who sign up for the service when a new show is released but only if they keep their memberships afterwards. Its the retention rate they care about, nothing much else (sadly)... and that hasnt been successful for this era of the Doctor. The first series had great viewership, lots of new subscribers but less than 30% retention of new subscribers and Disney didnt consider it a success. Go figure! Yes, people sign up to see the Doctor, then quit.
That's on Disney though, not Doctor Who. If people sign up because of Doctor Who but can't find anything to make them stay when they finish watching then Disney needs to up its game, not Doctor Who.
Naturally its gonna do big numbers on Disney Plus its the only place international viewers can watch it. It doesn't necessarily mean that its good, it just means that's the only place a lot of people can watch it. In the UK, the country that created it, makes it and funds it, its the least viewed Christmas special in the shows history.
I believe Doctor Who is more popular in Aus & NZ (in Aus myself) than a lot of the other countries. Our countries used to heavily rely on BBC television programs to fill schedules (including repeats) during the heyday of Classic Who which built up a strong local fanbase.
I wonder if we could compare and contrast. How many episodes of the 'Battle Between the Land and the Sea' we'd be willing to trade to receive more of the main show? Despite the Disney money, it's still finite. If we could get five of the main show, that'd be great, or perhaps how few/many would we be prepared to trade for...?
To be perfectly honest I am surprised that Doctor who did that well here in the US. Mickey didn't promote it. They were too busy promoting this anamated virtual reality broadcast of an NBA game between the Dallas Mavericks the Minnesota Timberwolves which was similar to a broadcast of an NFL GAme they did between the Cowboy and Bengals a couple weeks ago that featured that Great Hall Fame Athlete Home Simpson. If Doctor had received a tiny bit of promotion it would do wonderfully better than it did.
I am sure Doctor Who will be around in some form or another in 60 years time but I doubt it will on air continuously for all that time. It will go into hiatus then come back a few times before the 2090s. It is heading for another hiatus if things don't improve in the next few years.
That doesn't make it a success on Disney plus. You have to ask yourself what its going up against on the streamer and its not much at all. There is the Star Wars Skeleton Crew out at the moment and Marvels What If season 3 other than that there isn't much competition to speak of. What matters is how many people are watching it not its chart position. Skeleton Crew apparently is doing pretty badly in terms of viewership ( its pretty good in my opinion ) but Doctor Who is behind that in the USA charts. For example it doesn't matter if its number 5 if it only gets 250 thousand watches. We will know more when we get the third party Nielson ratings but I wouldn't get too excited just yet.
Yeah rankings on Disney plus isnt really doing it for me. I have no context on what that means other than the fact that on that service of its shows this is one of their better ones. It doesn't tell me how many are watching it. I dont really go off the numbers per se anyway, i usually go by the overall vibe of the show. gonna be honest i was a little deflated after seeing the uk figures which i know were respectable but still. but now that i've seen for my own eyes that Doctor Who beat Home Alone AT CHRISTMAS (in Australia) I am a happy fellow
This time next week Joy to the World will be long forgotten in Australia while Home Alone will still be riding high. The point is that not enough Australians will have subscribed to Disney Plus specifically for Doctor Who as its lack of longevity over the past year has shown. Make the most of today’s success at the top of a Disney Plus top ten chart because it can’t last and is nowhere near enough to make Disney execs take note.
I didn't know this was still being made. I saw a few episodes after Peter Capaldi left and lost interest as it seemed like a spin off of the previous series.
Update: What is this? A flamboyantly gay Doctor, obsessed with fashion, dancing and hooking up with another male character. And why all the crying? It's all the most offensive stereotypical portrayals of gay people rolled into one character. An enemy character portrayed as a drag queen. I was better off not knowing what this show has become.
I like Skeleton Crew but if you look it up it hasn't done very well in the ratings which is a shame but it also doesn't make it tough competition. Not sure about What If? I don't think the first two seasons were high performers though, sadly adult animation rarely is, ( I loved Arcane which also underperformed).
@@TomOBedlam-b2h Currently, Skeleton Crew is the second most-watched thing on D+ in the US (right after Home Alone 2). DW is #5. I think more people are starting to watch it due to word-of-mouth. The show is basically Goonies in Space, and it does it very well.
@@hiddenrio If you google it, the viewership for Skeleton Crew hasn't been great ( like Andor before it ). It doesn't really matter if its the second most watched thing on D+ if its the number of people watching it means its still underperforming. I kind of hope we will see a boost towards the end of its run like Andor when people binged it.
I would say to concentrate on a stories quality and production information not people's judgement's on other things. That's a distraction and not to be concerned about.
If I understood you correctly, the figures are for the day you're looking at, so in the USA it might have been higher earlier - I know a lot of US Doctor Who TH-cam folks had seen it and done their reviews by the middle of boxing day. I'm with you , the figures you've found do not suggest for a minute that Doctor is a dying brand; far from it!
Doctor Who should've been higher considering Doctor Who and Wallace and Gromit were back to to back. There wasn't much competition on at 5.10 and its exactly the time parents sit with their kids in front of the Telly to watch a show. 9 million watched Wallace and Gromit and only 4.11 million tuned in to watch Doctor Who that speaks volumes. On top of that some of the 4.11 million would have been people who turned on the TV 10-15 minutes early so they didn't miss the beginning of Wallace and Gromit, that still gets counted as a view . Without them it could have easily been a million lower.
@ZarbiDW he means a trans person, because trans/transformer he’s also claiming trans people are trying to deceive people. Usual transphobic tripe, not worth listening to, the winner wasn’t even trans she is a drag queen and she deserved the win she wasn’t picked just because she’s a drag queen.
You fail to mention Disney Plus had to move Doctor Who from the TV to Film top 10 amid 30 year old movies to scrape into the top 10. The true test is where Doctor Who will be tomorrow and the next day while the rest of the top 10 remains more or less the same. The problem being that Disney Who has little or no longevity. Nothing to get all excited about, I assure you.
That's the thing, it's about putting things into perspective. Yes No1 now after one day of release. But season 1 did, but within a week in some Disney charts it fell down the chart and out of the top 10 quite quick. So, yes maybe this is a bit early to give it a pat on he back saying well done like it's amazing. It's the following days/weeks will see the bigger picture
The Disney plus top 10 includes both TV and Movies. However I’m not sure how much Disney+ is actually based on streaming numbers and how much it’s based on what Disney wants to be the top 10…
Sorry to burst your collective bubble - I have watched since Hartnell and this series is very poor - a lead actor who can't act (why is he so smug all the time?) stories that are an insult to the intelligence , lead by a showrunner who no one will criticise. We are not "the haters" as you portray - we remember when the show was watchable and the general public watched it too - not just a cult group !
and you have to consider if people even enjoyed the show, or even hate watching it as we can clearly see a lot of people hate this incarnation of the doctor and showrunner lol
@@Tharries 9 million watched Wallace and Gromit directly after Doctor Who had be aired. There was a time when families would have sat down and watched both back to back on Christmas day. This is meant to be the BBC's flagship show. You would have thought they would have done similar numbers, this just shows how many families have deserted Doctor Who. Worse than that there will have been some overlap in the ratings with people turning their TV's on 10-20 minutes early so as not to miss the beginning of Wallace and Gromit, that gets counted as a rating and without that Doctor Who could have been much lower than 4.11 million.
@@TomOBedlam-b2h one is a brand new Christmas movie of a beloved franchise which had a good amount of advertising behind it while one is just an episode of a tv show. apples and oranges
@ZarbiDW Rubbish both are Christmas specials of beloved children/family franchises. I would say Doctor Who has in its time a far bigger fanbase than Wallace and Gromit ever had. Its like comparing apples to apples and you know it. When it came down to it and they were shown back to back more than twice as many tuned in for one and not the other. You can't even say its because viewing habits have changed which is that other old excuse because in 2017 Twice upon a time got 7.92 million views and BBCIplayer and streaming were in full swing. gonna be honest i was a little deflated after seeing the uk figures which i know were respectable but still. but now that i've seen for my own eyes that Doctor Who beat Home Alone AT CHRISTMAS (in Australia) I am a happy fellow
Canada is French
I didn't know this was still being made. I saw a few episodes after Peter Capaldi left and lost interest as it seemed like a spin off of the previous series.
Update: What is this? A flamboyantly gay Doctor, obsessed with fashion, dancing and hooking up with another male character. And why all the crying? It's all the most offensive stereotypical portrayals of gay people rolled into one character. An enemy character portrayed as a drag queen. I was better off not knowing what this show has become.
🤦🏻♂️they’re trying to keep Doctor Who on the Disney Platform by using a bunch of watch bots
As I watch in the US at 2pm on 12.27.24 it’s 5th :)
Doctor Who also had some tough competition this week even just on Disney Plus, with What If...? and Skeleton Crew also dropping episodes.
Number 3 in Germany rn
Italy on Disney plus is 9th on the 27th
If I understood you correctly, the figures are for the day you're looking at, so in the USA it might have been higher earlier - I know a lot of US Doctor Who TH-cam folks had seen it and done their reviews by the middle of boxing day. I'm with you , the figures you've found do not suggest for a minute that Doctor is a dying brand; far from it!
I think the UK figures would be higher if it was between wallace and gromit and what's hopefully james corden's final tv appearance
agree,I missed it live as thought it wouldn't start til 7
@@TomOBedlam-b2h 12, maybe 13 million watch that annoying fat man, so by your own logic, it still would've been better to put it before that came on.
It’s top 5 on Disney today Fri Dec 27.
Netflix should pick it up.
It would definitely get cancelled then, everything good does.
Its 5 in US as I type this.
doctor who is #5 as of 10am 12/27 in thje usa
Cant watch this video yet but if the title is true that is great news
EVERYONE is saying Srickly's gone "woke" A Decepticon was predictably made winner.
what do you mean by "decepticon"
@ZarbiDW I said "Decepticon" work it out.
@ZarbiDW It was won by a drag queen.
@@inspector2363 sorry typo, yeah you’re a twat
Old movies always chart well on streaming services at Christmas, seems like bull to me.
We are not "the haters" as you portray - we remember when the show was watchable and the general public watched it too - not just a cult group !
copium is strong in this one
Shills of the world unite. It's still is very bad these days.
Come off it
Yep, top ten is the worst place to be in any chart 🙄
and you have to consider if people even enjoyed the show, or even hate watching it as we can clearly see a lot of people hate this incarnation of the doctor and showrunner lol
It's still is very bad?
A bit like your English then.😂
Yep
4 million is not a success. This show used to get 14 million viewers for Christmas Specials back in the day
It quite literally never got 14 million
@@Tharries well Voyage of the Damned came pretty close
@ZarbiDW Rubbish both are Christmas specials of beloved children/family franchises. I would say Doctor Who has in its time a far bigger fanbase than Wallace and Gromit ever had. Its like comparing apples to apples and you know it. When it came down to it and they were shown back to back more than twice as many tuned in for one and not the other. You can't even say its because viewing habits have changed which is that other old excuse because in 2017 Twice upon a time got 7.92 million views and BBCIplayer and streaming were in full swing. WAKE THE F*CK UP Are you really that dozy or out of touch with reality. The show is in trouble and if things don't improve grim reality is going to hit you smack in the nose in the not too distant future.
Moffat is the worst thing to happen to the show.
Why Moffat now?! First I thought you said Chibnal, then Davies, now Moffat?! Do you even like any era of modern who?
@ When have I ever hated on Davies or Chibnall?
Currently 6th in Canada ❤
