It did feel like they were the clear winner. They're iconic characters, it's aimed at both kids and adults, it has an earlier timeslot (6.10pm) and there was a longer wait since their last project.
Yeah. I was never a fan of Gavin and Stacey but I understand why others are and having adored the Office Xmas finale I "get" why it won. However W&G should have won and I'm convinced that rewatches will reward it since there are SO many easter eggs. I literally LOLLED at the callout to "Aliens" and the joke was very meta.
The problem with ITV is that they have one idea and go over the top with it. Even on a bank holiday theres a guarantee they'll insist on putting Tipping Point or The Chase on in one way or another... these just make me switch over immediately as theyre worn out on me now
People need to remember that ITV have never embraced Christmas for a few reasons - first when ITV launched in 1955 there was never a unified look for presentation as each region had their own style, so Christmas presentation couldn't be unified apart from trailers. That wouldn't change until around 1998. Next, ITV is commercial and don't want to waste big shows in days where ad revenue is very low (Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day) so Michael Grade once said the motto was "cheap and cheerful". Some years they would compete like 1978 when they poached Morecambe and Wise from the BBC. Other than that, right to this very day, they do cheap and cheerful mode.
The whole Anita section of Joy to the World is the highlight of the special. Honestly makes you wish you had her as either the focus of the episode, or her as a companion.
She reminds me of the “Next Doctor” (who wasn’t a real doctor), they would both were far better than they needed to be and could have been permanent fixtures. Definitely the heart of their episodes.
Unfortunately it likely won't shut them up because their arguments are irrational and not based on evidence. It is fairly easy to demonstrate gross right wing/establishment bias within BBC news (did you spot their retraction on Xmas day about certain misreporting of a topic YT won't let us discuss?) However the rest of the BBC should be treasured. I'm certainly open to debate about how its future might best be secured via greater integration with the other majority state owned broadcaster (C4) but such nuances are lost on the "bash the BBC" idiots.

Sure, Doctor Who was fun, Wallace & Gromit was a triumphant return and Gavin & Stacey was a beautiful farewell, but the unrelenting unfunniness of the 73rd Mrs. Brown's Boys Christmas special was TRULY a sight to behold.

Even saying it for at LEAST ten years - you cannot compare ratings today to those of ten, fifteen, twenty years ago. The competition isn’t other programming - it’s other platforms. Also shocked that Helen Worth’s exit from “Coronation Street” after 50 years didn’t crack the top ten.

The BBC really needs to commission a Wallace and Gromit for every Christmas. Still shocking since 1988 there's only been four, plus two movies. Then again, maybe with the Netflix money behind it now, they might reconsider.
That sounds like a good idea on paper and probably would help draw in more viewers at Christmas but it’d be next to impossible to have a Wallace and gromit film every year. It’d take most of the year to actually produce, assuming they haven’t ditched claymation for CGI, it would be expensive and would probably flop after a few years unless they can think of entertaining, gripping stories to keep viewers interested.
The whole idea of "Dr who is dying out because the viewership is dropping" thing is baffling to me. Dr who is consistently being watched on the iPlayer rather than live TV and people always come back. I didn't like Jodie Whittaker as the doctor, she was miscast in my opinion but when her time was up I was happy to come back and I'm sure a lot of people are the same, the beauty of the doctor is that a different actor will always come along letting people come and go as they please.
Strictly Come Dancing suffered due to Wallace and Gromit. BBC needed to keep Strictly but also squeeze in Wallace and Gromit into prime time, so Strictly for the first time was shunted out of prime time and into the afternoon slot. This is why they experienced a drop, from 5.3 million last year Christmas 2023 to 4.05 million for Christmas 2024.
Personally I found it poor on all the channels, Have never really got into strictly and Call the Midwife, Highlight for me was Eastenders, the way the storyline went the spilt shows worked well, I am looking forward to Outnumbered

Seems they got a kick up the arse after the bad PR they have had during 2024 and decided to throw everything into Christmas as a way to show the BBC is here and will always be the home of Christmas television in Britain. Strictly is normally a thing in my household, however the Christmas day one is never as good as the live series and we decided to give the Christmas one a miss in our household for that reason.
I was surprised at just how much I liked this year's Dr Who Christmas special, which even as a huge fan who first watched the show in 2005 (and read all of my dad's mountain of novels before that) I generally find kind of meh. I liked Ncuti's first season on the whole even if it was a bit of a mixed bag, but I'm genuinely very interested in where they take this Doctor from here.
Caught up Gavin and Stacey was THE EVENT! sublime Wallace and gromit was just sublime and best Gatwa era episode 3 f Doctor Who agreed the middle section was brilliant gave me Smith abd Capaldi era vibes m...i may prefer NYD Dalek Whittaker era sprcials ....but this one was a good one and looking forward to next series. Outnumbered tonight was shockingly bad.

Strictly doesn't usually do as well on Christmas Day as it does in its regular season - The lack of it being live, the lack of following celebrities on a journey and so forth - so I'm not as surprised as you with where it placed at Christmas. The quieter moments of the Doctor Who episode are also the parts I enjoyed most, but Wallace and Gromit was my most anticipated program and it provided exactly what I was hoping it would. The thing that shocks me about G&S is that it was a _higher_ overnight than 2019s (The last one was an 11.6m overnight, the remaining 6m or so from timeshifting) As always, this is going to be fascinating to see the final results of all of these.
For the last few years it has averaged around the 5 to 6 million mark compared to 8 million for a regular Saturday live show, which is very decent in this age of TV.
Have you seen the rating for EastEnders, they were lower figures than Doctor Who, Still Doctor who rated 6th place in the top 10, You cant win them all.
Of course Doctor Who will be renewed. It's one of the BBC's most recognisable shows after all. Whether it'll happen with Disney, who knows.@@artofdrinking

I for one loved the Gavin and Stacey Finale. It blew the 2019 one out the water and felt so much more natural and less forced. It was fantastic. That said the 2019 was good too. A question though, has anything ever beaten in terms of viewing figures; Only Fools and Horses 1996 Christmas episode? Linear TV is dying out for sure. But just out of interest?

Most live TV I have watched in a Christmas Day in years (+I recorded ‘Tiddler’). Watched the new Wallace and Gromit and the Gavin and Stacey finale live on BBC One HD, as well as the King.
Found it interesting that ITV didn't bother at all. The Corrie Christmas Day episode should have been huge, with one of their most recognisable characters leaving after 50 years, but they didn't even seem to promote that at all. BBC1 absolutely deserve to dominate the top 10 this year.
Really disappointed with the Strictly Christmas Special. Only a couple of Christmas themed outfits and a few routines that didn't even have Christmas songs. Felt too much like a regular one off special 😢

They are cheap to produce and get solid viewing figures. Quiz shows are doing really well on old fashioned TV in an age where ratings are in the bin

Adam i like your child like voice of Doctor Who fans rating banter of 4.11 million being the worse rating in Doctor Who history 4:02, Hopefully that will shut the crazy fans base up for a while, i'm catching up on the BBC Iplayer at moment as i was over at my sister Christmas day and left her place for home just before it started.
Its like ITV can't even be arsed anymore and have thrown in the towel - even their Christmas Idents are lazy and also show signs of total un interest - as long as the advert doing in the money

Most live TV I have watched in a Christmas Day in years (+I recorded ‘Tiddler’). Watched the new Wallace and Gromit and the Gavin and Stacey finale live on BBC One HD, as well as the King.

The Corrie Christmas Day episode should have been huge, with one of their most recognisable characters leaving after 50 years, but they didn't even seem to promote that at all.
BBC1 absolutely deserve to dominate the top 10 this year.

Really disappointed with the Strictly Christmas Special. Only a couple of Christmas themed outfits and a few routines that didn't even have Christmas songs. Felt too much like a regular one off special 😢
I don't care what anyone says and I'm perfectly happy to die on this hill......Gavin and Stacey is the most overated British comedy of the last 20 years! It's the emperors new clothes and in the future everyone will say the same!
