This video is about the "Speedpaint 1.0" line of paints that was released in 2022. In 2023, these were phased out for an updated line of paints referred to as "Speedpaint 2.0" The Speedpaint 2.0 line has improved durability and a wider color selection, and there are minor differences in the flow. The bulk of information in this video is absolutely still applicable though! Happy painting 🙂

Yeah, hoping that an affordable larger bottle of the thinning medium will be available soon. Many of the speed paints seem quite dark and it would be useful to be able to thin these for use as washes/tinting. Keeping these accessible to folks will certainly make these a staple going forward. Congrats as well on the overall favourable and enthusiastic response from the community.

Many of the finshed test models have a "grainy texture" to them (3:24 is probably the best example).
I have seen this in other tests of your speedpaint line-up. How would you go about to limit this?

  • @LeeAllanSpades
    @LeeAllanSpades 2 ปีที่แล้ว +666

Here's a tip for the color thing. I do this when recanting my contrast paints, and I plan to do it with these when I get them.
Put a layer of white primer on each paint lid and let it dry, then just paint the lids with the speedpaints! It will show an approximation of its highest and lowest shades with the ribbing of the dropper bottle lid, and it gives you a good idea of what the paint will look like on a model. I actually do this with all my paint lids, not just the contrast paints. Makes paint selections so much easier!

@@stevejohncockram For you. I've never had a dropper bottle I've liked. I'd rather use GW's pots. They have their issues, but one that is overblown is their sturdiness. For the short bottles I find it's super hard to knock them over. Read as, you need to intentionally knock it over. The tall bottles are a bit tricky, but if my ADHD ass can remember it's there and not knock it over, then other people can too. And if you're going to be putting it in a pallet like you have to when you use a dropper bottle, then close the bottle and you don't have to worry about it.

      @Gauldame 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Bumper/Intro:
While I do appreciate the reviews from creators such as yourself and to show such I watch fully comment and updoot, there is one bit of feedback to Army Painter I wish I could get to them.
Upfront declaration of conflict of interest:
My go tos for paint are Army Painter, Vallejo, and Liquitex, with some toes in other brands so I am probably going to buy the hell out of these to expand my toolkit.
      Intro:
Look, the appeal to authority argument is great and giving these to influencers in our community has to be great roi for advertising dollars so I get it.
However, they started like in the middle of last year for a product at the time slated for release in march of `22.
I get building hype but for many products in our niche those reviews typically pretty close to release time to build the hype at an appropriate time. (and subtly manipulate that BUY NOW and FOMO gremlin).
Which I also agree can be a pain for the CC because these vids don't just magically appear (see your commentary on the subject, and also Guy's from Midwinter minis for further support).
      Problem and clarification:
But the problem with the building it too early is now in every video of this product that gets released, I am reminded that:
I...can't...buy...this...product. (insert subconscious negative attachments to the brand).
Like I said, they started this a couple of quarters ago. This has happened enough to where I have literally been conditioned to have a mild negative emotional response to their product, which is NEVER the intent of the marketing roadmap. And I realize that I am not special or unique or some wonderful snowflake out in the drift so I am sure I am not the only one who has gotten that...I guess Pavlovian...unintended conditioning. (note at the time of writing we're having some rather pretty snow in my region hence the analogy. and also marketing is just weaponized psych so I get it.)
I mean, you even had to comment that we can't get it yet so there is evidence I am preaching to the choir as it were, and as a qualifier under no circumstances am I faulting you, any other content creators, or the manufacturer. (I just want to be clear sense we can't see each other's faces or tone of voice that NONE of this is trying to be like...awful or internet-y or whatever).
      Context:
And yes I am aware of the Geedubooyas colored elephant in the room...so I get the push. Especially because people get, weirdly tribal about paint sometimes, but to the marketing team @ Army I would like to tell them that you might have stumbled a little with such a long lead in and sooo many previews spread out. A little more clustered closer to the...quarter...of release might be better. Markets tend to have ADHD and goldfish memory for advertising dollars.
      Bumper/Close:
Thank you for your super chill content, and your advice with painting, I literally use some of your tutorials when I am introducing newbies to the hobby to demystify it, and I like the vid. If, the company asks for any feedback, you could pass on my random internet rambling concerns, it would be appreciated.
If not cool, you owe us (and me) nothing in particular and I certainly don't want any extra effort on you guys part.
Again thanks and hopefully this is taken in a way that in no means is aggressive or condemning or misconstrued.

@@GauldameGauldame They've been marketing these for about 3 months and have only recently started taking pre-orders. Ever thought that some of the previews are spread out because some content creators can't just drop everything to knock out a video and they might have sat with the paints for weeks or months? There's also the fact that not every hobbyist can afford to just drop $100 at a moment's notice on their hobby and having some lead time gives some them a chance to put a few bucks away, unlike say Games Workshop with their FOMO BS...

One takeaway from this video and Squidmar’s is that the low viscosity (lower than Contrast paints’) is a real boon: whereas with Contrast paints pooling can erase fine details - it appears the Army Painter Speedpaints don’t have this problem - despite the pools seen in this video, they didn’t dry as solid clumps! When I first bought mini paints I was baffled by how little information they give you for the price. What pigments are in something called "sand golem"? Is it sunfast? How opaque is it? I'm used to watercolor paint catalogues that write you an essay and an excel sheet on everything (which makes buying paint more fun than I can afford tbh), and felt a little cheated when trying to buy paints for minis that are priced like professional products and sold to knowledgable and interested painters, but described like children's toys.
So this review was really helpful, and I liked that you spoke about the pigments being different from each other, and showed how they dry differently!

Man I feel you on this one! I switched to liquitex acrylic gouache for that reason. I know what I'm mixing and how they will react together and can control how muddy or vibrant its going to be. The ratios are also quite easy to maintain. Wish mini paints would be more ''transparent'' on this. But these paints look like a thing I may enjoy using over my gesso base to color and get rid of the texture to use my good brushes faster.

This is the most thorough, non-biased review of these Speedpaints that I have seen. Using them as instructed over matte and gloss, over metalllics, over zenithal, over drybrushed, through an airbrush. You didn't just take the paints do whatever you want with them then complain when it doesn't work as imagined they would without actually trying them first. Well done and a class act all the way.

I wouldn’t bother, all the paint colors are exactly the same, if you already have contrast paints there’s no point in buying these unless you run out of a pot of contrast. It really irritates me that they just ripped off the colors 1 for 1 instead of making some different colors that people who already have contrast paint would actually buy. You don’t poach someone from a job by offering them the exact same money and benefits, you need to offer more, and Army Painter is offering the same if not less.

So, you like being charged more for a worse product, hmm?
That explains why you like GW.
Speedpaint has similar colors - because both GW and AP are covering the same basic colors - shocking, I know.
Speedpaint is a lot more consistent across the line - Contrast is a great idea, with mediocre implimentation.
There are Contrast colors that are excellent - Wyldwood will be remaining as one of my main choices.
Others are horrible globby crap - the Dark Angels Green will be replaced with Speedpaint.
But you gleefully ignore the price gouging that GW routinely engages in.
The Speedpaints have moderate improvements over Contrast - and are more reasonably priced. A better product at a better price.

You have the best review of this stuff that I've seen, which I suppose isn't surprising given your science background and more thorough testing methodology. Doing multiple models with various basecoat/prime starting points, as well as diluting with the speedpaint medium, really shows the broad range of tools these provide.
What I most appreciate is that these aren't washes, inks, or contrast paint clones. Their behavior definitely stands out relative to other things, though I'm sure people will fool around with medium mixes in an attempt to replicate how these work. I'd rather we got something new than a (likely cheaper) clone of contrasts, particularly if they ended up not working quite as well.

It's more than likely that your new favorite colors are single pigment based. The more pigments thrown into a particular standard color, the worse it will mix. If only there was a device that allowed us to select the most mixable colors from a given line, tweak their viscosities and such, and mix our own optimal color range on demand, like.. TriaDart II :) It was developed to allow us to master the best parts of most paint lines.
