I didn’t like Army Painter stuff until I tried Speed Paints. They’re my favorite paints, 100%.
The greatest thing about this video is that in 2023 someone is taking accountability and acknowledges that they were wrong on a subject.

@@Bluecho4 😁That's awesome to hear! While I designed all of the characters with the setting and lore in mind, one of the goals with the physical minis was to render their contrasting textures in a way so they'd be a rewarding canvas for glazing, and speed painting techniques.

Army painter have become my primary paint brand by accident. When i first started painting i got a reaper bones set but those paints didnt cover very well but they got the job done. Then i bought a space marine paint set but i kept spilling the pots and the paints were expensive so i never rlly took interest in citidel paints. Then i bought a vellejo starter set and those were my favorite paints for the longest time but the set was kinda on the smaller side. So i looked into the biggest bang for my buck and found the army painter air paint box set and got that and using those air paints with a brush was actually rlly nice, i found that most of them were the perfect consistency to use right out of the bottle. And then when they dropped speed paint that was an instant buy for me. A quick way to base coat with out layering all while keeping the under shading from the zenothal prime! Now all my paints are stored in my closet except for my Air paint set and my Speed paint set haha

Oh, man. You were the one who got them to add the pastels? Fantastic work. I've been making pink orks by zenithaling over a dark violet with princess pink, and using pastel yellow as the main color for their armor/clothes. I just went out and bought two more bottles of Princess Pink to ensure I don't run out while painting up a full army.
I love that you have a ‘style’ of colours to your minis. So happy that you were involved with helping the development of some of this paint line. I have followed you since Midwinter Minis did a call out on Pale Sand many years ago. I use it all the time. Will have to pick up Howling Sand next!

I recently got the full set of the 2.0 line. I still struggle to use this style of paint, but I have heard good things about the 2.0 version so I figured I would give army painter another shot. I am glad you covered this line as I find your insights very helpful.

Great video! Speed paint 2.0 are my go to paints. I pained a whole set of Black Order marvel statues from Wicked and they turned out awesome with a Zenithal/Speed paint.
For extending drying time the Vallejo Airbrush flow improver has worked well for me.
I use the same one. It's great.

I still miss reactivation. I still have 1.0 paints which is great but the range had so few paints so very poor color choices. I am glad though that you adress the issue and look at some workarounds cuz damn 2.0 dries FAST
I use my speedpaints for basecoating, the thin quality and underpainting does not mean that I skip the highlight and blending step. The purpose of these paints seems is to make your painting process faster/easier, not to replace or skip any steps.
I use them as a base coat as well. I start with four coats of under coat first, black, dark and light grey, and then white. After that I add the speed paints as a base, and then work details, masking and then finally I will do the edge highlights and dry brush to tone the whole thing.
i brought both, i still think the original was better, reactivation was never an issue for me, i varnish multiple times through a project anyway, I am used to painting with oils, and original speedpaint was great, as it had all the functions of oils, without needing to use spirits for cleaning, and with a faster drying time.
With regard to the Speedpaint metallics, I use them, but I find they are a bit on the dark side with little highlighting. I find the best use for them is as a base colour before highlighting or drybrushing over with a lighter regular acrylic, as a base colour they are much more consistent than the traditional dark wash over an acrylic with less pooling in recesses.

Dana, Great follow-up to your initial review. I'm a beginner that started a few months ago and I went with Speedpaints 2.0 to start. Overall I've been pretty happy with the results so far. I'm looking forward to your (hopefully) review of the new Fanatic paints when they're released. Thanks and keep the videos/reviews rolling.

I think I have bought almost all of the speedpaints 2.0.
I absolutely love the metallics. I bought the 90 paint set and then bought the individuals of the remaining ones I think I have about 110 of them.
I love these paints and I have been getting amazing results.
Great content as usual dana!. For the reactivation part, I still keep my original set of Speedpaints 1.0, which I use sparingly, when I want to paint miniatures with blends all over them (such as elementals, ghosts and so on). Other than that, I don't miss reactivation at all. 2.0's are just sooo good.
Thanks for the videos. I still wish I had more of the 2.0 Stuff. I got the big box of the 1.0 at release. With how little I paint and how much of it I have its hard to justify the 2.0. Out of curiosity Do the 1.0 and 2.0 work ok together? With the reactivating thing on the 1.0 line do you find it not worth it to highlight with normal acrylic paints?
I found I practically had my mouth watering seeing those gorgeous pastel colours in this video but I can't really think of a reason I would need them. I would be looking for excuses to use them though. The remind me somewhat of when Citadel introduced the edge paints (later rolled into the layer range, including paints like Dorn yellow). I imagine it would be hard to use them for highlights with the Speed Paint consistency so the use would be very different. You are doing a great job of making me want to try out more contrast-style paints though.
I've never really been a fan of Guyver or similar series, but Grave Trigger looks so cool.

I always appreciate the lengths you go to when explaining your relationship with something when making your videos, it speaks highly of your integrity. Well done.
I was so disappointed with SP 1.0 (how its features were presented, the surprises that came when using them and AP's solution to the issues was essentially 'just buy these new ones and give us more of your money' ) that I gave Vallejo's offering a try and have been happy. SP 1.0 I only use on plastic terrain as I don't care as much if the issues arise on that as opposed to a model I've spent considerably time on has issues (thereby making Speed Paint take more time than other products/methods).
That mixing ball got me once, never again. I ended up dumping a bottle before figuring that out.
I usually have about 10 minis sitting on my paint table at a given time and I spend a lot of time simply thinking about how I want each mini to look. Does painting just flow from your head & hand or do you also spend a lot of time thinking about each mini?

I started painting just a few months ago and I've been using sp2.0 and you really just showed the potential these have that I have not been utilizing. I picked up an airbrush recently and Ive been struggling to use it. Do you have recommendations on how to be better with it and maybe the cleaning process?
Have look at the tutorials from @harderairbrush , they produce nice "no bullshit"-videos on basic airbrushing, airbrush-maintenance and airbrush-cleaning. The principles can be applied to airbrushes of all manufacturers, not only "Harder & Steenbeck"-Airbrushes.
Arethe 2.0better at chipping? I found 1.0 extremely delicate - and would come off just from holding it while painting, hadnt seen that ever before with the game color or the citadel contrasts or the greenstuff inks
GraveTrigger seems like the sort of game ive been looking for -- bigger models, skirmish level and a Warframe/Guyver aesthetic.
While I'll be backing GT, I'd love to know if there are any ither games like it if anyone happens to know of any!
As a whole package Grave Trigger is unique I think. There are some miniature agnostic pdf only rules for Guyver fan games floating around (bit clunky, not great). But as far as a complete product, this seeks to be a niche unexplored.
Now a Warframe asymetrical style (semi co-op) skirmish game, that I would buy as well.
@@Bazanti Without spoiling anything, depending on the choices you make in the narrative campaign, you can go into a co-op story path, though it's an alliance that can be broken on the drop of a dime.
I'm also extremely sensitive to scents, and anything new is really noticeable at first. It's possible that they seemed strong but now you're used to them and so they don't stand out. I bought one color of the v2 speedpaints just to make sure the scent was ok for me before I invested in the whole set.
im not a huge fan of speedpainting! BUT the 2.0 range is absolutely amazing through the airbrush. I mostly use them for filters, and shading. never the less. Best paint through an airbrush imo
Howling Sand is awesome for doing bone, especially wraith bone for my Eldar.

It's cool to give an update because new paints always take some getting used to. I guess that's true, even for a full timer!
I like speed paints a lot! I don't notice too much tonality from 1 coat but they're still nice colours and easy to apply.
A good alternative to the pink (majenta) could be Green Stuff World Dipping Ink majenta/garnett purple - 60ml for the cost of other tiny paints works for me!!

Still haven't tried any Army Painter stuff. GW has priced me out of reach on their Citadel paints. Not to mention their bizarre devotion to pots when painters keep asking for droppers. And while it was a chase to find them I just got the first wave of Vallejo Xpress color. Getting ready to test them out and see how they work for me. Hoping these will become easier to get here in the States soon.
Army Painter is very good, I haven't bought any speed paints but the regular ones are great! A bit thinner than Vallejo ones so you need a few more coats than usual. Most of my local hobby shops have tons of AP products and they're great, I still prefer Vallejo but AP's reds are far easier to paint that's for sure. I primarily do model tanks and gunpla and AP's paints work great for large surfaces and dry brushing.
GWs devotion to pots is not bizarre at all. There was a Painting Phase interview with a GW product designer a while back that was really eye-opening. In short, GW isn't aiming for the enthusiast market, they are pitched towards absolute entry level painters and players (mainly kids) picking up models for the first time, as that's their biggest market. In that context, removing the barriers to putting paint on a mini makes total sense. With pots, you don't need a palette or wet palette, you can just dip your brush into the pot - this is how I used them when I first started painting as a kid! It can be frustrating, but for anyone watching paint reviews and tutorials online, GW's products are not primarily designed for you.
A couple questions I have is how is the best way to avoid streakage with Speedpaints. Also do you usually use speedpaint medium? If so what is the ratio?
I really love the pastels too. They were so helpful with my Heman and She-ra minis.
I learned another way to slap hop from a TH-cam named jolly lark with his Borderlands videos. Prime white, use a dark wash like Nuln oil or dark tone. Then either selectively highlight or dry brush white. Gives you a good slap chop base without it being too dark

I don’t know what she did, but my friend did prime the lids. I just tried to skip that and had to start over. I will be priming the top half of the lids then zenithal and the color. Really helps. My friend painting cap lids really show off what the speed paint will do. You know what the shading does.
Thanks for this review! Do you thin the speedpaints? I found initially that the dark tones seem really opaque if used right out the bottle, and found that thinning them with medium and applying 2-3 coats seems to allow more depth to the tones... Or is it just me??? 😮

I haven't tried it much yet, but I picked up a bottle of speed paint medium with them because a lot of people for use GW contrasts add contrast medium to those to thin them.
How many miniatures do you have on your paint table at a given time?
I've been thinking about trying retarder as the drying time is way more aggressive than most contrast/xpress colors--like the shot in the video, you have to paint super fast to avoid tide marks between strokes. I've just be diluting with water. The tip on holding the bottles at 90 degrees is going to be super helpful -- I've struggled in the same way! Thanks!!!

I have poor access to Speedpaints locally unfortunately. So, I’m going to stick with the Vallejo Express Colours. That said I do like Speedpaints, and even with 1.0 I’ve yet to really hit the reactivation problem.
Having watched Lyv’s video just before this, one thing I notice both of you avoid is talking about mixing these high flow paints with regular paints - in particular before applying to the model. This can be particularly handy in building colour transitions for saturated highlights that are an actual colour, for example mixing Pallid Bone with an off white to start highlighting bone back to that pure off-white for the brightest highlights.
I've been having good success with speed paints by adding differing mediums to the base paint, you can get different finishes with the same paint. If painting large areas I find the speed paints dry too quick and leave kinds of streaks, but a small amount of airbrush medium and acts like a flow improver, and smooths them out, and while I've not tried it, may also work for wet blending.
I've seen a lot of TH-cam propainters be skeptical or ambivalent about the metallics. Obviously, if you're an NMM goddess, or rarely use metallics in general they might not be that exciting. For me, an average painter, who just needs them to quickly paint armour on regiments of fantasy warriors they're perfect. I didn't try them at first, due to the lukewarm online reception, but now they're the absolute stand-out in the range for me.
How are they different from any other “regular” metallic paint?
@@robertcone613 Well, just like the rest of the Speed Paint line they're basically Contrast Paints, but Metallics.
And honestly, with a nuln wash, and a few touch ups with acrylic metallics, they’re immensely effective. Even for display models.
@@robertcone613 They are incredibly smooth and flow off the brush like a speedpaint, but provide really good coverage. I've never seen a regular metallic that can match that aspect. They don't provide very much actual contrast though.
Aren't you suppose to varnish in between SP coats? Even with the 2.0.

What size brush is dana using in this video? 4?
I purchased the whole 2.0 set. I found the metallics to be on the " meh" side, especially the silvers (they usually come out looking like a metallic gray). I have used them quite a bit for slap chopping D&D figures for a regular customer though, unless I need a citadel contrast for a specific color.

For me, I use the speed paints, and their ilk, as like washes. Thus, I don't use speed paints over white or white/black but over colors, albeit lighter colors.
I bought a bigger box of 1.0 speedpaints and its great but the reactivation is frustrating sometimes. I emptied like 3-4 bottles and changed to 2.0 from those but there are so many left from the first series... 2.0 is nearly perfect. I hope the the warpaint fanatic will be fine at the start. This time I wont jump on the hypetrain :P
There are definitely different perspectives on this...I love the slower drying time and reactivation properties of 1.0. I get frustrated with how quickly 2.0 dries. I'm dreading the day I run out of 1.0 and can't get anymore! :)

maybe if i wasn't so invested in contrast paints i'd buy these, but i have a ton of contrast paints already and the whole first wave of the Vallejo Xpress paints so can't really use these.
Paint still clogs in the nozzle too often. It is not just the mixing balls. I frequently have to use a needle to unclog or i get a now sideways explosion which generally are even more messy and sometimes splash the mini. Not happy with the bottles at all.
HOWLING SAND! Gotta go get Howling Sand if I get nothing else from Army Painter.
Have you tried Vallejo Flow Improver? It should help with wetblending (although I prefer other blending techniques, because they do not require rush 😉).
AP Speed Paints have, in my opinion, a very big advantage: You don't have to deal with those freaking GW paint pots. Those things are just not good to work with. Good for GW's business, for sure, as they probably let the paint dry out more quickly than you should like, but man, I just HATE those things. Dropper bottles all the way!
The worst thing of speed paint 2.0 is the name, since wanna link them to 1.0. They feel so different from 1.0 I felt disappointed. But they are fine, indeed quite good but just different. Branding them differently will help me to be more happy with the new line, which is indeed very good
Found this video late and Grave Trigger didn't succeed :( . I really hope they manage to go to production it looks like a very very fun game.

The inability to wet blend is really really annoying me. I think I'll change paint brands because it's like painting with one arm tied behind my back. I think the overly fast drying time is also the culprit with the blotchy results that 2.0 produces on large areas. I've tested both 1.0 and 2.0 and the slower drying time of 1.0 allows the paint to even out so much better. Overall, I think AP threw out the baby with the bath water on 2.0. :(

People dont seem to understand that when you are working with paints and thinners or other hazardous chemicals, wear a mask, gloves, eyeprotection and have proper ventilation!!!
These compounds are not healthy when inhaled or touched and they will cause headaches and dizziness. I've been working with different chemicals for over 10 years professionally.
Always, always, always use gear and proper measures to ensure safe use of chemicals. Gloves, eye protection, proper masks and ventilate the space. Its your health.
When I first got into painting Minis, the speed paints were reccommended to me by local game store. They were pretty new at the time. No one online was really doing much with them, but I found that they can look amazing with a few steps of prep. A Zelethol highlight and a wash at the end really make a HUGE difference, at least for me. Ive only ever used acrylic for drybrushing and never to actually paint a piece.
Can't speak for these, but I'm pretty sure regardless of medium, if you try and blend green and purple together, it's going to give you a hard time. Those colours don't go well together in terms of blendability.

Same, I got it a couple months ago and have been having overall a great time with them. I actually had to order specific colors cause I already ran through like 80% of their droppers XD
I love speedpaint 2.0 but i cant stand the smell of them. It's worse on certain colours and washes for me. Amazing paints tho and will always use them
It's absolutely Army Painter's issue if the mixing ball is able to clog the nozzle. I have seen nozzle designs that incorporate a mesh to prevent this exact situation from happening.

If you're sensitive to scents, STAY AWAY from Culture Hustle's White 2.0! It's a wonderful, opaque white; but for some reason Mr. Semple feels the need to make it smell like violets, and it gets really overpowering even in the amounts used for minis. I feel for the artists using it for anything bigger.

Grave Trigger looks like a fun horror jaunt, but not quite as horrifying as the comments on Cardboard Dynamo's previous project. Imma skip this one and avoid the heartache later. I'm sure these Kickstarter campaigns are attractive options when being sent all these production samples, but I'm waiting for the day that folks will learn to stop pushing them on their audiences. We've already seen what happened with BAM.
Howdy-just wanted to say that Grave Trigger is being manufactured by Unicool, the same company that manufactured Eldfall Chronicles and is making larger format minis for Infinity right now, and it's being fulfilled by Quartermaster. Also, all of the art and sculpts are completed and ready to be submitted for mass manufacturing. The only element of the entire project that isn't finalized yet is the final formatting on the rulebook. I've made sure to take every step possible to make sure none of the obstacles that hit Giga-Robo are standing in the way of Grave Trigger (which were manufacturing issues, art delays, and fulfillment through Amazon.) All of the above has also been in the 'risks and challenges' section of the KS page-I've wanted to make sure all backers are aware of what happened with Giga, and why it won't be a factor for Grave Trigger.
Also, unlike BAM's many outstanding projects, Giga-Robo actually delivered to backers, and gave refunds to those whose pledges were affected in any way.
Especially if you think that Grave Trigger looks fun, I hope you'll reconsider!
this video reminds me of some kind of political reconciliation between the provider and the user haha..unfortunately, colors have their own smell..for some it's annoying and for some it's not. and of course it all depends on how you deal with colors and combine techniques

thier warpaints is/was horrible, and so was sp1.0. Il stick to Express and contrast for army. Might try the new Fanatic. But after being burnt so much (money wise as well) I would almost reqiere a free sample box instead of paying and trying out any new AP item.
Yeah they’re just bad and they’re not comparable to contrast or xpress.
I bought speedpaint because of goobertown hobbies and Dana and its my biggest hobby regret. They go on horrible, they reactivate, they’re desaturated, they’re just awful.
@@flowerknight4879 This was my experience as well. I know they are the cheap option in the Hobby. I do hope the new fanatic range is nice. But that will prob be as expensive if not more then a GW pot with the more pigments + balls in them/higher production cost/value. It will be a big hmm for me to leave gw/ak/vallejo at this point.

Worst paints I’ve ever had. Still reactivate even after a coat of varnish. Some nice effects but not worth the money.
Are you putting water on your brush for contrast painting? Barely wet brush with any water at all with any of the contrast paint lines.
If you reactivate even through a coat of varnish - that doesn’t make sense. You could be doing something incorrect / not consistent with typical painting process, like watering down the paints.
