The one thing that surprised me was that the MC actually comforted Erika by giving her an embrace to a full on hug. I dont think ive ever seen that happen to any jrpg that doesnt involve romance. It was just a really wholesome moment where the MC gave the support our girl needed at the time.

I think some romantic undertones can be interpreted but its mainly platonic and I find platonic relationships in games to be rare and I find them refreshing.

It’s one thing when an ending or scene brings a tear to one’s eye.
It’s another thing entirely when just hearing the theme playing during the ending somewhere else brings those tears back and that’s what Hacker’s Memory’s ending did to me.
    ‘Memories’ indeed-

The ending of Hacker's Memory is one that I will never forget. I liked the cast a lot so it became my favourite out of the two games because I felt that the characters were more human. CS was lots of fun but HM was a more emotional and memorable experience for me.

The fact the ending turned out the way it did, but NONE of the characters have returned in any capacity, not even in the card game, is actually criminal.

    Spoilers below.
I enjoy cyber sleuth and hackers memory a lot, but I enjoyed Hackers Memory more. While HM has it's pacing issues I just enjoyed the story a lot more, and I kind of enjoyed the 18 chapters compared to 20. The relationships between the characters were so great and it was fun to see recurring characters from CS. And HM was a lot more sad to me and I was a lot more attached to the characters which made Erika basically leaving Earths existence so sad. Keisuke was the only one to remember her, not even Ryuji or his parents remember her and it's heart wrenching. I like to imagine that the links Keisuke has with Kyoko led to him meeting the main character of CS and the others and they somehow found out they that Keisuke knows about the digital world as well, but I can only dream. Overall I love both of the games and it's so awesome to have a game of a series I loved as a kid.

I love both Cyber Sleuth and Hacker’s Memory as both games were really good and lasted me for years on end on the first playthrough. Narratively and balance wise in the single player campaign, I prefer the original. Gameplay wise, I prefer Hacker’s Memory especially with the Domination Battles. They are just really fun. The reason why I feel the original does better in balancing is simply due to the pacing of getting better resources to raise your Digimon whereas in Hacker’s Memory, it seemed there were really long gaps before you were able to even think of upgrading the DigiFarm. I do love the relationship between Erika and Keisuke and I found it really sweet when the Dreamers team hypnotized Keisuke that Erika was the one he saw. I’ve recently been doing a nuzlocke on both games simultaneously and attempting to figure out how the two games go together chronologically. These two games will always hold a special place in my heart for helping me get through my teen years, especially the original. And I’m one of the 7 people who actually has a Vita.

    • @infern209x

to answer your question of how they go together if you mean story wise, they both happen at the same time as each other with the same characters in the same world, just 2 sides of what's going on in the cyber sleuth story. hackers memory explains why arata and suedou act the way they do in cyber sleuth, fleshing them out more with more backstory, and explains the truth of the hackers behind the scenes. the games basically fill in the blanks for each other and are in fact a single narrative together, just with 2 protags saving the world at the same time instead of just one, its probably why they rereleased them as complete edition. I played them when they first came out on both vita and ps4, then bought them a third time on switch and then a fourth time on pc. I'm glad to see new fans enjoying these amazing games.

This was pretty good game. I still remember using in my Digimon Cyber Sleuth first walkthrough in main team the Seven Great Demon Lords (Lilithmon, Beelzemon, Barbamon, Belphemon Rage Mode, Daemon, Leviamon, Lucemon Shadowlord Mode) in the final boss fight. However in my Digimon Cyber Sleuth Hacker's Memory first walkthrough I used mainly heroic Digimon like Gallantmon Crimson Mode, or Susanoomon in the final boss fight. In the end it turn out to be pretty interesting were in first game the evil digimon save up the Digital World, and in the second one the good Digimon save up the real world.

I was never huge into Digimon, because as a kid I wasn't allowed to watch it (thanks, Devimon) and as the years went on, all the games either released on consoles I didn't have or didn't come to my region at all (most notably the DS RPGs). As a result, I was always more of a Pokemon guy. In 2018 and 19, I decided to spread out and look at more games from the monster collecting genre. As a result, I picked up Cybersleuth. I was generally lukewarm on the game, mostly because the story took a while to get going and because I played on Hard, which isn't all that well-balanced in the original release. I did beat it eventually though and it was a good time after going down to Normal and actually paying attention to the layered type charts.
When I played Hacker's I did so on the dual pack, that, honestly, was one of the best gaming purchases I did in recent memory. Sharing the Digimon collection between both games means you can actually play the games repeatedly as you collect them all, something that sounds neat in theory but adds so much more in practice - after all, your save file won't become a dusty trophy room this way even IF you have them all. The dual pack also applies all the balance changes from HM to the first game, making the first game a better experience overall. The real highlight for me though, was HM. The story, for the most part, feels a lot better paced than the one of the original, getting going quicker and also not meandering quite as much (though that still is a thing because of mandatory side questing). HM somehow combined all the things I want in a game and story in a package - it's character focused, even fleshing out some of the first game's characters and making them way more likeable, it still has all the cool Digimon specific monster collecting systems I love (like the expansive evolution tree) and its themes are very close to my heart. I also have a sister I have a somewhat troubled relationship with, so watching Ryuji's and Erika's story unfold was extra special to me and Erika's situation is... let's say, closer to my own situation than I'd like. Which made the whole final act extra impactful and the ending kind of broke me - I'm still not sure if I'm putting too much thought into what it's trying to tell or if I'm misinterpreting it or what, but it made the game stick with me and I think that's great.
I actually replay these games too, which for such long RPGs is pretty unusual for me. The one thing I kind of wish they'd change is how stats work though. One thing Digimon always excelled at for me is the ability to make any mon strong stat-wise. I regularly replay the DS games and I always get an endgame ready Flamedramon in those despite it not being a Mega. The sleuth games instead make stats set in stone like Pokemon, which I think is a shame, as lower stage digimon naturally phase out as the game progresses that way and by the end, only Megas matter. And of those Megas, only those with good specials or abilities. It feels like a bit of a waste with such an expansive evolution tree, you know?

Digimon grew up with the fans unlike Pokemon where the anime is still going on with no sign of growth Ash is still ten years old.
The Pokemon games are right now a glitch fest and i really don't see a good future and i doubt the company cares anymore but Digimon is evolving with us it's being a more mature and more caring for the fans it doesn't treat the fans like crap and as for the Digimon anime it's a lot more mature than Pokemon is.
We got Tai all grown up in Digimon kizuna and got ghost game which is a little dark at times and we're getting a zero two movie with the kids grown up as well... I really appreciate Digimon for everything that it has been doing and I can't wait to see where it goes in the future.

    • @BobbyHopp
      @BobbyHopp  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I do think digimon has done a good job with responding to its growing audience (while also appealing to its younger crowd with stuff like ghost game so everyone wins).
That said while it's a technical mess SV are probably the most fun ive had in a main series pokemon game in years.

As a life long Digimon and Persona fan when you say Hackers Memory is character driven, you are not kidding. The character investment and development for Hackers Memory is outstanding. And that ending is easily one of the most powerful in any Digimon series. The reason I mention I’m a Persona fan is because Hackers Memory has Persona’s finger prints all over it. From its distinctive and I love it. From its use of core themes (In HM’s case memories), to its motifs (The Butterfly Dream which has been used in both this series and Persona multiple times) and it doesn’t go to waste at all.
The pay off for Hackers Memory is beautiful, but tragic as well. Also Wormon is an MVP.

one of my favourite quotes was with the steam dealers with the beeps. it was kinda early in hackers but it was one that my friends and I laughed our asses off. I showed the game off to a small set of my friends, named digimon after them and had fun with it. hackers felt more complete to me and it is still honestly, in my opinion, the better game. plus, i got to fight alongside jimmy ken and his theme always got me in a good mood. being able to fight with him was the best, since sleuth never got to do that in the first place. loved Erika, chitose and Ryuji helping too and it was, and still is, a blast to be with them

I am a little sad Keisuke is a silent character because in my opinion he has way more of a character than our redheaded Aiba and more dialogue for him would have made the scenes pop a bit more but im kinda impressed that he was so expressive to convey stuff in the scenes even with the assets they had. Like when he comforts Erika or his famous :3 face when he wants to goof.

I'm a lifelong Pokemon fan, but I've also always had a soft spot for Digimon thanks to the classic Adventure anime and the World series on PS1. I fell back in love with Digimon when they revived Adventure with Tri, and while I ultimately thought it was pretty mid it left me hungry for more. I had to wait until the dual pack released on Switch (didn't have a Vita or PS4) and I gotta say that Cyber Sleuth and especially Hacker's Memory are among my favorite entries in Digimon as a whole, even including the various anime series. It's refreshing seeing a series grow up a bit with it's audience and explore themes something like Pokemon will only briefly touch on. And Erika might just be my favorite character in all of Digimon. I think the reason why people don't talk to much about HM in comparison to the first game is mainly because the first impression people had with this game was "it's just a carbon copy of the first game". I still remember the comments when the first trailer came out and some folks started to point out the game for recycling "everything" about cyber sleuth, then the complain was it didn't had a female protagonist then when it realised the main reason to hate it was because it has so many dialogues. Some even question out why it wasn't just a DLC for the first game

Thank you for making this video! I've been playing Hacker's Memory from a sale on PSN like you talked about.
This is one of my favorite Digimon games of all time but man, it could be A LOT better.
It just needs Quality of Life changes/updates and the MEMORY UP item change.
They need better quest markers, the menuing should be easier, DigiLab should honestly just be in the start menu but still have the DigiFarm be separate, etc.
Memory Up should be story related but I would also like for MEMORY UPs to be in important side quest or maybe having the potential to obtain Memory Up from a rare DigiFarm side quest drop from the Sleuthing your Digimon do on the farm.
I'm excited to see your Digimon Survive video, I really hope you enjoy it! I'm gonna try to get it before Guilemon goes away on month 1!

II think as you said this is a character driven story rather than some big epic relating to the Digital World, which is why while the scale is smaller than the previous game, the story feels a lot more personal thanks to its cast. Also, Erika is best girl, one of my favorite characters in the entire digimon franchise.

Due to story reasons, my brother ultimately preferred Cyber Sleuth (7:36 - part of that is the ending so it was interesting to see a different perspective from someone who likes the ending), but if I recall correctly he did prefer this entry from a gameplay standpoint. Regardless, it serves as a good companion to the first game.
6:40 - Again, with how well they coincide with one another, it does make me feel the off-screen developments of Cyber Sleuth were intentional.
12:32 - Love the very concept of Domination Battles. Being able to play as the other characters is real and I hope such a thing returns in future Digimon games or even pops up in other monster taming RPGs.

I liked Hacker's memory. It improves on the original without changing it too much. My only issue is that the twist with "k" is a bit heavy on the foreshadowing to where if you pay attention, the twist is a bit too obvious. I think, at the very least, throw a curveball, so instead of going, "Ugh, i figured it out earlier," you go, "i knew it!"

I still love this universe even I finished 100% the game long time ago. Amazing story, amazing gameplay, enjoyable side stories. On top of that they have considerable amount of various Digimons which I enjoy the most.
Expect they'll continue something like this in a future. I have finished Digimon Survive a week ago. It's enjoyable but after it ends it's done. Overall story remind me to the original Digimon Adventure anime with more mature but I felt it's not that memorable or revisit vibe like Cyber Sleuth or another story series.

Well, I agree with your comment, but Survive is not quite done after 1 playthrough.
There are multiple endings, some only achievable on a second playthrough.
Problem with Survive is that the gameplay aspect is a lot worse compared to CS.
In CS, the fights are enjoyable and even if one does not like the gameplay, most fights are done pretty quick.
In Survive, fights can take quite a while to finish, which makes an (in my opinion) already boring battle system even more tedious.
Sooo...to get those multiple endings, you have to actually deal with that Gameplay a whole lot more, which is most certainly...not good.

Jokes on you, I have Sleuth on my VITA because I wanted the additional content I missed the window for originally!
That aside, on the bit of the game feeling easier, it was. The balance changes they made from Cyber Sleuth to Hacker's Memory were actually pretty massive, in amount of not scale. Piercing moves were readjusted, passives were changed, and ABI was more plentiful to name some of the bigger ones. Notably, these tended to affect the enemies worse than the player due to the story design.
I love Digimon, I love /most/ of the games, and both Hacker's and Sleuth are amazing. They came at a great time and were digestible enough for new fans that it sparked a huge western resurgence that I couldn't be happier for.
Whiney Side Note: I am still, unapologetically and unreasonably, angry that they censored Sistermon Noir because of America. I'm glad we got Ciel and all, I still love her, but the reason for this being her debut is nonsensical. Even more so because its just an asset swap and in every other piece of media, Ciel uses her sword. The copium tells me I'm being nitpicky, but it really just rubs me the wrong way.

I haven't played through Hacker's Memory yet but I think I need to take a break for a little bit. My only real complaint for the game is that you really need 9 exp Tactician USBs to make the grind tolerable. Even with that and one Platinum Sukamon it took me 70 hours to complete the game with a team I wanted and could use to beat almost everything (excluding post game) on hard. Normal mode is too easy, and hard makes you grind for penetrating movesets. After 40h I was getting kind of burned out and just wanted to get it over with. Story was OK, annoying at times but got more interesting towards the end. All in all I did enjoy the game, and this is coming from someone who is a bit nostalgic for all the Digimon games on PSX I played as a kid.

One of the funniest things for me is that the protagonist reminds me a lot of tadano from komi san cant communicate, not only on design but that he is also "just a guy" like tadano lol
One of my favorite things about the game is how they enphasise that the protagonist is a hacker, since he has a lot more of hacker skills that he is required to use, compared to cyber sleuth where at most, you'll maybe use the incognito mode once or twice, while you'll be using the hacker skill to prevent random encounters the most, while in hacker's memory, you'll use several hacker skills to solve puzles in order to progress, incognito mode can help you avoid tamer battles, and you can even "accelerate" yourself, making traveling across the dungeons more easy

I had some issues with hackers memory right after playing cyber sleuth. Mainly the pacing was weird at times like you mentioned. I feel like both games had moments it drags on side story/ mission wise. I felt like hackers memory did it even more with less chapters than cyber lol. Literally moments I thought “how is there more side quests I want more of the story.”
I did enjoy everything and even optimizing my teams a bit more having learned better strategy from the first. The ending for hackers memory is better imo too. Made me shed a tear or two.

It's a nice Duality story and they both compliment each other well filling in the holes of each other's stories. My only gripe with Hacker’s Memory is the lack of a choice for a female protagonist like in Sleuth and inability to skip or auto in cutscenes. Other than that, Hacker’s Memory was a great experience and much more coherent story. I feel that this game also influenced Survive in terms of tone and character-driven narrative as well as focusing on more obscure Digimon.
If they ever do a Cyber Sleuth style Digimon game again, I hope it has the tone of Hacker’s Memory and Survive while having a female protagonist with a close group of friends like in Hackers.
I really like your reviews, very informative. ❤️

    • @BobbyHopp

I think it's a fair gripe, I wonder what a female version of keisuke would look like lol. I think the set gender was because he is more of a character but honestly he's still silent enough they could have made a female option.
Maybe this game made them hit their stride in terms of writing more grounded characters? I wonder if that will carry over into the new story games too.
Thank you so much for the support!

    • @tadaokou4919
      @tadaokou4919 2 ปีที่แล้ว

A female version of Keisuke wouldn't really work due to the goals they had in mind with this game.
For example: The relationship between Keisuke and Yu was clearly meant to be Yaoi. One-sided or not, changing Keisukes gender would automatically change this aspect of the game.
Similarly, many scenes between Chitose and Keisuke wouldn't work if Keisuke could be played as a female.
Keisuke being somewhat flirty with the females (and/or Yu, depending on your choices) is also pretty important to his character.
      In short:
If they made a female version of Keisuke, a whole lot about the story would require rewritting.

    • @alex-8736
      @alex-8736 ปีที่แล้ว

@@tadaokou4919I mean what's wrong with the female protag being the one being flirty to girls and then having that kind of relation to Yuu? It would need re-writting, relationships are the same regardless of gender

    • @tadaokou4919
      @tadaokou4919 ปีที่แล้ว

@@alex-8736 "relationships are the same regardless of gender."
If you actually believe that you live in a fantasy world.
But besides that, the goal with the relationship between Yu and Keisuke was pretty clear. It's Yaoi.
A change in character would result in a change in genre which is not what the devs had in mind. Yaoi is not Yuri. Yuri was not the goal of the game and the amount of rewriting just to make Keisuke female is tremendous.
And for what? Just so people can say "I can see myself in this character because I got tits and she got tits"? Normal people can see themself in a fictional character regardless of gender, race or anything else. The fictional character only needs to be written well and needs to have relatable struggles/characteristics.
The gender of fictional characters is only a really big deal for people who spent their time on Twitter 24/7.
