Is it just me or does anybody remember the movie "The Hunted" with Tommy Lee Jones and Benecio Del Toro? I believe that movie was based on the contract tracker Tom Brown Jr. who was hired to find a special ops agent who went rogue?

I had the distinct pleasure of training with Tom at the Tracker School in 2019, it was one of the best and most informative experiences of my life. If anyone ever gets the chance to to do their standard at the primitive camp I cannot recommend it enough, once things quiet down pandemic wise I plan on doing my advanced standard as well. I love the design of the knife but I feel like you probably want to carry a smaller duty knife with you to compliment it though.

Its an interesting knife for sure. I'm just not sold on the "one tool option" knives. They generally don't do anything well and I'd rather take two or three specialized tools that I can depend on. I've also never been in that fantasy scenario where all my gear magically exploded of my body and left me only with my uber knife... so... yeah.

Yup I have one purchased many moons ago with the leather scout carry sheath. Ultimately I keep it, as a warm memento of my ever evolving bushcraft skills & journey. I also have a collection of Esse knives and other makers. I have settled down on my Bark River Knives, the Bushcrafter & my Bravo 1.25 all in 3V for my go to for bushcrafting and camping. There are so many great knives many made with super steels. But good ole 1095, 6150, or any high carbon steel is hard to beat to death. Great review.

As far as the ferro rod is concern:
Either get a striker blade or, with a file, scrape a little section of the blade, to make a straight edge to use as a striker.
There's some Mora knifes with the section of the top unfinished (rough) near the handle, to make it easier to use as a ferro rod striker.

I'm a Cold Steel fan and $300 gets you a lot at Cold Steel. I'm not impressed with the looks of this blade. It looks creative but it also looks like something you'd see at the mall. And I don't buy garbage from the mall. I want function and death. Especially for $300. $100 gets you death, and lots of it, at Cold Steel.

This knife has and i have love hate relationship. It is a beast and it does do very well.. you have to learn how to grip the blade for cleaning fish but I find it s absolutely for a Pine forest.. this knife is amazing in a pine forest.. Pine barrens or forest you cant go wrong with this thing (not a knife and one tool is a falsie) Mine is so sharp you do not want to bump the blade "eeeet whiiiil cut".... Its a chopper all right ..my mistake was getting a right handed sheath.. i would prefer to carry it on my left hip and draw with my right hand.. i fine it impossible to get back in the sheath when scout carrying it. behind me. the right hand sheath will left hand draw very well on your left hip or your right for a lefty cross draw.. but .. i am beginning to think none of that is an issue.. it took some getting use to but like any tool you carry you have to practice with it.. It will eat a baton fast too.. i am not big on beating a knife through anything.. oh by the way the tracker wont cut a tomato but the BK2 will.. you can do all kinds of normal things like food prep with a bk2 and field dress a Buick.. J

Took tracker knife and Mora knife out on a 4 day trip...I did use the tracker to cut down a 6 inch tree and build my bed/shelter, but the mora got more campsite utility use. A 30.00 knife or a 300.00 knife take my 30.00 knife, I could've built a sufficient shelter without cutting with tracker knife.

I did bushcraft skills with my Bowie knife as a kid. I had no idea bushcraft was even a thing, I just really enjoyed working with my knife. I’m enjoying my TB1 immensely. I don’t really feel the need to be gentle with my ferro rods or gear in general, If it can’t keep up its not for me. Bow drills are a skill that gets way easier very quickly and you can use a bootlace. Develop skills before getting knives with creative geometry.

It is an interesting blade but for the steel used it is absurdly overpriced.
In that price range you can get a lot of blades that are using more universal designs but also in some amazingly well performing super steels.
That being said it is very nice seeing a video where people can see a little bit more what it designed to do. Hopefully that calm down some of the haters of this design. These people seem to hate on it for the wrong reasons, being that it is an ineffective design which it clearly isn't. It does its job well.

1095 broskie... 5160 and 6150 are too flexible. I've yet to see a better steel for short knives than the 51-61, 10XX family above .40 carbon content.

My experience - Yes you can throw it! 1) Yes it is a real hard steel knife you can throw 2) No it is not a WSK, but it is much less expensive and - you can throw it 3) If you throw it - there is no damage to the lower working blade - and the handle seems to hold up very well to impacts. This thing is a beast - you can beat it up. It is not super heavy, but won’t fit in your pocket. If you have some property to play around on - get one. If you are even thinking about it - Get it! It is a beast. As a former Green Beret and growing up running around West Virginia - this is a great value for the price. Tops makes great quality knives that are perfect out of the box and last.

A lot of custom makers in the US make Tracker clones for a much more competitive price. I personally really like Caleb Cox's version because he makes a "primitive" model that has the look of knapped flint, and a much more comfortable handle than the Tops version.

Id buy it in heart beat if they got rid of the saw back and just gave me a solid 90 degree spine. I like the blade shape of the straight edge and that curl and sweep to the front. I just dont see the purpose of that saw back other than a way to injury. I think if you were in a true shtf situation the saw back would become more of a threat to the tired and worn down user and it just limits the type of cuts and work you can do with it.

I'm not crazy about it, but I respect it. When I first saw them, I just assumed that it was some weird design that was just supposed to look cool; it took a friend of mine explaining to me for me to understand it actually is a thought-out design- outdoors multi-tool.
It seems like it would take practice to use as a hunting knife. I don't know... It seems like it would perform all of it's "multiple functions" with mediocrity. Not as good a chopper as a bowie, not as good skinner as a hunter, not as good a carver as a bushcraft knife. I can respect it, just seems like you would have to dedicate yourself to learning it. It's it's own thing.

I don't think it would make a very good Hunting/Skinning Knife, so therefore I don't think its a "everything knife".

In the tom brown manual when handling the saw side with your hand they suggest using a thick piece of hide but I also think a thick folded piece of leather would be your best option.

Loved the video, fyi about myself,I have been using the Tom Brown Tracker for YEARS and LOVE IT,and when it 1st came out with the Mini-Tracker that is my EDC and is ALWAYS comes in Useful. I also Design and Build a Lot of my Own knives.
I just wanted to drop a message about talking about the SkullCrusher blade and it’s smaller sister blade also from TOPS and design by EJ Snyder which he used in show I believe was Naked and Alone,or something like that.
It’s is Very much like the Tracker, But on Steroid’s, lol.
I have Both when they came out and they are Also Great Blades.
Let me know what you think.

@Voice of truth EJ has been asked about such a possible weakness but reported that none have broken in severe testing . I have seen many TH-cam reviews and none have reported any problems. Personally I love mine. The choil is right for my hands. Does David ever answer his questions as I asked about the UK availability of the basic MSK but didn’t get a reply so he has lost my custom.

I'm not into tracker blades. Sharpening them is a nightmare, they're horrible for defense, they're heavy and carrying a hatchet would need a better choice, as hatchets will do almost everything a tracker without the cost.

Tom Brown didnt design that, Dave Beck did and it was originally called the WSK, thats the one we see in the movie The Hunted with Benicio Del Toro.
I own a Tracker myself, I love the design but didnt have $1,000 to drop on a Beck original, but this is not Browns design its a copy.

According to the thing I just read, Tom brown commissioned beck to build the knife that he(Tom) designed. I’m not trying to start an argument but if you could source and provide a link to where beck is credited as the designer I’d like to see it.

@@Surago Tom Brown stole Becks design and then patented it himself. Slick business move but disrespectful as hell.
Ive never once read anything anywhere that cited Tom Brown as being the original designer of this blade style. I know about him wanting Dave Beck to build some of his own versions with slightly different geometry than the original WSKs, but the originals are not a Brown design

And after all the legal details and BS, the design is still intellectual property of Dave Beck, no matter who snuck around and changed the geometry just slightly and then patented it in their own name....

Dj Crew well having not seen an actual legal document but the thing I read wasn’t an actual legal document as well. It basically said what beck said except alluded to the fact that it was toms design and beck just helped modify in way of “tweaks”. I did a lot of other reading as well and honestly Tom just seems like a lying POS. He’s a story teller and there’s no reason to think he isn’t just telling a story now about who designed this knife. Thank you.

@@Surago no problem man. Im somewhat of an artist myself, and so I think its important that an artist gets due credit for their own creations, its only fair. And Tom Browns claims about having been trained by some old native American guy have also been proven false. Story teller is right!!! Also he doesnt really teach anything in his classes that you cant learn from other sources, he just puts his own spin on it to make it sound edgy and cool... and more expensive.

I am a knife maker, and knife collector I just don’t like this knife it’s more of a gimmick and over priced, heavy, and all around awkward knife. I know a lot of people love this knife, but most of those folks buy the knife and only pull it out of the sock drawer to show friends for the wow factor. If you actually get out in the woods and use a knife you would more than likely choose a different style of knife than this.

Love my TOPS Bushcraft. The quality of the TOPS knives is outstanding. The Tracker looks cool but to be honest I will not buy that knife. I can buy a good small axe and a good knife for the price of the Tracker and I'm sure the both tools would perform better than the Tracker. The handle of the Tracker looks great but I don't like such recurve blades and also don't like sharpening such blades. And to be honest, and that is the problem of all survival knives, when do you need such a knife and when do you have it with you when you need it? You can't take it into a plane. On a ship you don't need such a knife. In your car you can take other tools with you and when you go backpacking you normally have a stove and your food with you and maybe a small to large knive. In most real survival situations you don't have a knife with you. I have so many knives here (TOPS, Fällkniven, ESEE etc.) but most of the time I only play with them.
