It's one of the knives I used to get with me in my military deployments. I love it so much that I bought another one.
I bought the Jr and it has served me well. Not hard or to heavy to carry either.
I have had one of these for years. I bought it based on early videos from Dave Cantebury. I have used it enough that I need to buy a second..which sadly looks brand new as I simply have not had any opportunity to get out of the city in the last few years. My opinion is that this is a jack of all trades knife, but as the saying goes it is a master of none. If you are camping with a vehicle close by and weight is not an option then I would use a saw, fine knife and an axe but if I was going deep woods camping and weight was a concern then this is the one tool option that I would take. Thanks for your videos they are informative and just fun to watch.
I have just read all the comments and it is obviously a love or hate design. As for Tom Brown not designing it I have been on Dave Becks site and he seems to say the design came from several sources that he refined but came up with the Tracker name first. EJ put his interpretation on it and so has Dave Wenger. For me I love the design concept especially the SXB and mini tracker by Tops. Boker Plus Mini Tracker by Wenger is an absolutely fantastic bargain at £65 for those wanting to try the Tracker style out before committing to the other more expensive options. It’s 1095 with micarta handle and kydex sheath.

I think some of it it’s because that style was in a movie plus there is the talk of you really designed that blade style.
I think some people are jealous of the design. At the same time one can see the differences in the blade as obstacles or oppertunities.
Our mind is the best tool and creativity compliments it.
I've owned the original tracker for several years and it does ok within its intended design use . You either like the design and learn to apply it or you simply don't . There is no such thing as a do it all knife . That's why we carry more than one ! I personally carry three and may pack a hatchet or tomahawk when camping or on the trail .
I was gifted a Tom Brown Tracker, it’s beautiful and does some things very well, particularly chopping in place of carrying a hatchet. However, I found myself going back to other “do-all” knives when I was out that performed better at “general knife stuff”. The Kabar-Becker BK2 with micarta grips is my goto. It’s thick like the tracker, but the basic design works better for a wider range of tasks. You lose the trackers chopping ability, but batoning is easy with the BK2 if that’s your thing, and I always have a hatchet in the pack anyway.

No knife exists that can chop nearly as well as a good hatchet. I never understood why someone would want to go with the one knife that dead “all”. You use at least 3 times as much energy and your body takes much more abuse chopping with a knife. I understand practicing, occasionally, with chopping and batoning with a knife for the UNLIKELY event you loose everything but your knife. That’s why I also carry my hand hatchet on my belt.

@@petrosspetrosgali Agree to that but batoning through wood might be more energy efficient than chopping that small tree down because the blade is in place everytime you hit it with the batton stick. The tracker has got quite a tall blade therefore should go in fairly deep making the task a bit easier.
But one will have to find a good batton stick first and for that some chopping might be needed.

Im homeless in the Sonoran desert AZ, and use this knife to survive, no one talks about how good the saw is for collecting dry grass to start a fire, it is honestly the best thing I bought since I been homeless.
You use it to collect dry grass? Have you lost your hands?

But the reason I use the saw part to collect grass , is because the Sonoran desert is full of Cholla barbs. and is full of nasty things that hate you, like baby snakes.
And it makes a real good dry grass collector as well... more efficient than hands.

Look it is simple, give it a try.... I dunno what it is.. I guess because I live full time outside in the desert I don't really give much thought to using equipment in ways others wont think about..
Just give it a try next time you go camping... might work for you or not work for you.
I live in a place where you do not want to use your bare hands to collect grass.
Gave my TBT away. it was starting to piss me off trying to sharpen it.. now I use the Alaskan harpoon from Tops, and RD-6 from OKC ... more of a knife, less gimmicky, now I use a tool I made my self for collecting grass, made out of spokes of a bicycle wheels and a handle from screw driver.
I don’t know how I missed this video but you rocked it out, and had fun doing it.
I’ve increased my Tracker/WSK stable since we chatted about them.
The tracker is like the KLR 650 of Survival Knives, it gets the job done but it takes some practice to get proficient with it, they’re big and heavy.
The 1/4 round/ grind transition makes great curls if you pull it towards you when making feather sticks, kinda like a drawknife. The first hook is also good for pulling a pot or kettle off the fire by the bail.

Hopefully next month I hear from David Beck about getting my first WSK. That will join my Tops T-1, 3, & 4 and Bark River Trakker and Trakker companion. Tops has a Tracker companion that I’ll have to grab one of these days.

This type of tool has been out for several years now, it is not for me. Even if it were $100, instead of $200+, it seems to be a jack of all.....master of none. Some may absolutely love it!
Ax, saw, knife blade, for general - food prep, camp stuff, fish/critter gutting - Done.
While hiking, that thing will pull your britches down.
I get the "1 tool" option "idea", I do. I just think - a good shaving sharp, ax/hatchet, Esee 5/6/Junglas 2, Becker BK2 /BK7/BK9/BK10 or (Terava Skrama - Not US Made) would be better, if you want a "1 tool" choice and a LOT cheaper (Junglas 2 ~$170+)
To each his own. I'll carry multiple "tools". I don't use Channellock's, as a Hammer either.

A knife can never out perform a hatchet, especially a 7 inch blade. Because of the swing of the hatchet the circumferential velocity and surface area of the hatchet blade will always have more penetration than a knife. (Assuming both are more or less the same sharpness )
I think the tracker can be compared to a belt knife and a chopper knife. The bill hook and saw on the tracker should give it more options for wood and meat processing I guess. I have only held a tracker and have never used it so my thoughts about this is just based on theory. A pity it is so expensive but I might start to save up for one. Nice review, thank you Brian
Same. I love the knife but it is not my one tool option. But my Garberg or my soon to arrive TOPs Overlander 2 make a great companion knife to the TBT
I have to say that this knife never appealed to me until I saw this video. I thought it was "too much", but you did the same things I would use a knife for with no problems. I might not buy one right now, but who knows what the future holds. Thanks Brian.

I know there is a lot of hype around this knife as well as some controversy. I just got one after finally deciding to pull the trigger. Usually I wait till the newness wears off but I think it’s an awesome knife. The TBT #1 fits my large hands perfect.
Is it overkill? Probably as are most TOPs knives but I like it. The sheath is nice and solid. I like the kydex and leather TOPs does but hate the nylon ones.
That hook transition is quite useful and I love the belly at the tip. It’s not for everyone but it’s definitely a keeper for me and what I use it for. Great video and great info.
Mr. Brian I have to say this I never liked the way the tractor look design give me a just never look like it would work after seeing you review it made me rethink that thank you for an honest review I might have to have one of those or at least look into it more thank you brother be safe and stay strong it's crazy out there right now

while I appreciate the TBT, and I did own one in the past, it one of those knives that either works for you or it doesn't. For me its just a knife that I personally didn't get on with. I found it to be too clumsy, while its multipurpose, its more of of a beast then a specialist. that is why I sold mine long ago. Tops makes some fantastic knives and I have no doubt that this knife is just as great as all their other knives as Far as quality.
The most sturdy knife I own. The purpose of this knife is to not have to carry multiple tools. Its not supposed to be an tomahawk but it can be. Great for processing large game in the mountains and chopping thru bone.

The movie is fun but that’s not what sold me on the TBT from TOPs. It’s a unique design regardless of its liked or not. But I like mine a lot.
The Tom Brown is a big heavy knife. A lot of people like to carry it scout style. The problem is if you fall backwards that big hunk of steel is getting all jammed up in the small of your back. Ouch!

You can pick any random Tops knife and be sure to get a hard working quality blade. Their Tom Brown designs are impressive.

Survival On Purpose Most of their prices are competitive too.
I never had a TOPs knife that wasn’t outstanding quality. I have a few with the nylon sheaths I found to be subpar. And I had a MSK that had a really thin kydex sheath that was molded poorly and had terrible retention. That’s it. The standard kydex they use is really good as is the leather sheaths.
Voodoo San Sheaths are hit or miss. Their knives are always "top" quality.

The full size iooks like a beast and certainly does the job ! I have the mini version and does great as my neck knife! Can't go wrong with TOPS knives !!!!!!!
The only problem with the full size is the kydex sheath becomes loose, and it can fall out

That knife is a true survival knife. I have many of the model 1, some have been personalized and reground to optimize their edges and capabilities. I also have the no. two, three, and four models each of which is excellent for their intended uses. I also own several Beck versions and other custom makers versions. Needless to say, I am a Tracker fanatic! ALL Of my Tracker knives, independent of the maker, share the same features executed in slightly different ways, and ALL of them, if their edge geometry is correct, will outperform ANY other "survival knife" on the market for the straight-up survival functions for which the knife was designed. They include but are not limited to fire prep, shelter building, and trap, and bow building. Game prep can be done as well. Smaller camp tasks like spoon making etc. become a little more difficult but can be done as well. It is NOT a traditional bushcraft knife for sure. I am sure others out there have their favorite knife and I say more power to them, but this one is one of my favorites because I know how to use it and know what it can and cannot do. If you spend the time to learn the knife, you will abandon all other "survival knives" IMHO.

@@benjamincoetzee1369 i have all the TBT versions and love all of them except the tbt2, lol. Because it is a bit too small for my uses. The TBT3 is the better medium size version. As far aca TBT1, yeah it is the best version. The 4 id great for pull curling feathers. I actuall have several 1's and would be happy to sell you one or trade. Dm me if interested.

I have liked the look of that knife ever since I saw The Hunted, years ago. I would love to see you test the Emerson Mule fixed blade knife. Almost no one has tested it. I would fit your testing routine perfectly. Another to consider checking out is the Benchmade MeatCrafter. It uses S45VN and cuts unbelievably well. It may fall outside your normal testing, unfortunately, but its a really nice, quality knife that is also difficult to find reviews on.

How does the Tops tracker compare to the MSK-1 Survivalist? That would be an interesting comparison?
The chopping test seems faster on the MSK-1 Survivalist or am I wrong?
I find the TOPS rendition not too hot... averageiowaguy did a regrind of the TOPS that came much closer to the original custom version and I think also closer to the original intent of the knife. For the regrind the part near the tip was convexed for chopping and the part near the handle was turned into a much higher and thinner hollow grind for fine work.

I am not sure about that transition from the chopping area to the one for the push cuts, other Tracker knives (e.g. Dave Wenger's) seem to have a much better "hook" (or whatever that is). I tried both, wood curls etc., but it might be just me. Awesome video!

This is a very controversial knife. Either you love it or you hate it. And Tom Brown is a very eccentric person, but a good man he has helped find a lot of lost people. Myself I would never buy it I would not fault anybody for liking it. My son-in-law has one. The other day his father and I were talking and he told me he says I can't for the life of me figure out why he bought that damn thing. But the movie did a lot for sales it is a good movie. I own the smaller version and I love it. I have taken it with me on a lot of camping trips. It chops, cuts and has never let me down. I pair it with a Mora robust and I need nothing else. It is an acquired taste, I’ve known people who hate it. Anyhoo, I enjoy your reviews a whole lot 👍👍.
Btw, try the quarter round to make feather sticks, unbelievable easy.
Is the smaller version the tracker 2?
Believe there is also a no 3 which is a little bit smaller than the full size tracker.

You should have shown Nash what you would use to sharpen that knife with. Thank you good video. That show us how to sharpen that knife out in the field. Show us what you would use to maintain the edge out in the field.
Out of my price range. Might try using the spine within 1" inch of the tip to strike. I've seen a few reviews with softer steels that wouldn't strike for nothing however when they used the spine near the tip it worked well. Reason being the spine was sharp enough and the makers hardening process hardens the steel on average 1" inch deep. Fitting for the TOPS process if the spine at the tip is sharp enough. So few even try in their reviews. It has worked!

I have found the size of the tracker 2 makes it a little more useable, at least for me.
Brian had I know you wanted to check this out so bad I would have sent you one. Would have been great to see a head to head against the MSK when you were doing those videos.
I understand that knives are personal, and opinions of them are as varied as the people who buy them. I have never liked the tracker blade geometry. the break in the blade edge would hinder a lot of the things I use a knife for. for anyone who does like this style, TOPs is a great choice, but this really is not for me.

I like it alot, but I'm stuck in a rut. I have wanted it for a while, but I like EJ Snyder's Skullcrusher Extreme a little better. I think its coming down to the sheath. Their both awesome looking, but I have not held the Tracker yet. Bryan, was it comfortable?
Yes it was. And so was EJ's knife. The Skullcruser is just longer and, at least for me, not as good for the finer stuff. But it chops like nobody's business.

I never liked this knife since the first time I saw it. Now that I see it demonstrated, I like it. Good chopper. They make a mini version too with a 3.5” blade.
I thini it is a valid one-tool option. And it scores high on the cool factor.
Survival On Purpose I think this is probably the most viable one tool option out there. I think it chops so well because of the weight and the point that forms where the 2 edges meet in the belly of the knife. It digs in. I’ve seen guys split small logs about 8 or 10 inches in diameter using it like a hatchet in one quick strike.

One of the things that I had admired about you was that you had not fallen prey to all the hoopla about this design. There is a reason why the traditional working knives of so many nationalities all over the world is a plain drop point or spear point blade without all sorts of embellishments . I'll take a BK 2 or a Jaakaaripuuko any day. Even a British MOD military knife is better. While I have mad respect for you on most things , we are just going to have to agree to disagree on this " knife ".😃👍🇺🇸
Do you thinking have fallen prey to some hoopla? This is not a traditional working knife. It is designed and intended as a “one-tool option” and I think it performs well in that role. As do many other knives. I know there is also a lot of “hoopla” against this design from more traditional minded folks. I hope I don’t fall for hoopla in general, either for or against something. The problem I have with all purpose knives is that so many designers put so many elements in their blades that they end up not exceling at any of them . I think any fixed blade knife that comes with an instruction manual has too many things going on with it.

It is a "revolutionary design" like a friend of mine said and that is true.
It will not appeal to all and that is normal.
Any HIGHLY sharpened heavy duty knife is a survival knife. One thing it doesn't need is a hefty price.

Anyone got any sharpening tools they'd recommend for out in the field touch ups? Or sharpening if out for extended periods?
I attended Tom Brown's school for wilderness survival and tracking. He trained us to survive in any wilderness with nothing but a blanket and a knife. The training took place in a secret but very tough environment. I can only describe it as hell on earth. If you can survive there, you can survive anywhere. At the time, this knife had not been created yet. However, it was in the planning stages and he showed us some drawings of the prototype. If I could have only one knife that my life could depend on, this would be the one. A true and practical survival knife, it does everything that is required for survival. Yes, you can find a knife that does SOME of the tasks better, but then you would need another bladed tool to deal with other tasks. If you find yourself in a survival situation with only one knife, pray that this is the one!
The problem with a "do it all" tool is it does not do even one thing great... the featherstick looks ridiculous, chopping with a sharp hatchet is probably 5 times as fast...
This reviewer wants this a little too badly imo.
It's not a bad knife, but it's too expensive... I would rather buy a KaBar BK9/BK39 for 150$-175$, it can do much more imo and its cheaper than both BladeHQ-209$ and TOPS-310$... Usually a knife over 80$ is a no-go for me anyways but since I live in Europe it's kind of a stupid rule (here prices are doubled for name brand knives, in Romania there are 3 websites that have the actual price of the knives and 1 of them is KaBar.com so it has only KaBars and the other one has only 100$+ knives and it takes 2 weeks to ship) Sorry for the rambling. Have a nice day!

Seems like most heavy survival knives could do just as well. If I needed to break a bone, why not just smash it between two rocks? Most times you don't need a perfect notch-any deep notch will do.

It was easy to sell because I wound up buying a custom trakker from a blade smith (it’s a beast but was pretty expensive coming in at $650 without a sheath 🤦♂️) I can recommend the tops Tom Brown (or Tim) Brown’s version. It’s a beast in it’s own right

Why anyone would pay over $200 for a TB Tracker is beyond me when you can buy a Bobcat Tracker for $60 and is superior in steel (D2) and craftsmanship. Lastly, being the knife was given to you for review this says a lot about an unbiased opinion. You obviously didn't thoroughly test the knife because the knife is new and you're only experience is right out of the box. How about some reviews of knives you bought with your own money and actually test them before your review.
I do my best to be as consistent as possible with every knife I review so the viewer can make their own decision based on how they see the knife perform. The knife does not know who paid for it and that has no bearing on it’s performance.

Robb Russon designed the knife. Tom Brown actually stated this in his news letters many years ago. Robb Russon had written. Correspondence in the 80’s with Tom. Tom loved Robb’s design. Asked him for a prototype. There’s is 00% proof of this. Tom Brown later took Robb’s design without permission and had Dave Beck make the knife. Dave Beck was an attendee of Tom’s classes.
Really a sad story for not just Robb but Tom. Tom has really diminished his reputation in my opinion because he flat out lied and stole the design. Look up Utah knife works and Robb Russon. It’s filled with all the proof and a great story
You know that is one knife I never ever thought I would see getting balance tested, although, I still don't like it just an irrational personal feeling
It’s not an irrational feeling. This knife falls into that hollow handled Rambo knife category. It’s a clumsy, mostly useless looking knife.
