    I'm looking to buy a MYLR but my main concern is the $7500 US federal tax credit. Now that Tesla removed the existing inventory discounts (MYLR was $44k in inventory whereas now it's $47.9k), I'd rather just wait for Model Y LR Juniper. Though I have no idea if Tesla is just gonna use different batteries which could make the RWD and LR not qualify for the tax credit (like with Model 3). I wish they could give us a heads up early on so then I can make a decision as this would be a family car I keep for 8+ years.
    I really like the new changes/additions to the refresh Model 3 so would love to have a Model Y with that but not if it's gonna cost like $8-10k more.

  • @ISuperTed
    @ISuperTed 9 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    Elon didn’t say anything about a $25,000 car on the call. All he said was Tesla will prioritise using existing production lines to produce a ‘cheaper’ car. No way will that be $25k - that price will only be possible with the Unboxed method and it will be $25k in today’s terms i.e. we’ve had a lot of inflation since he said that.
    The long-term cheap car will be $30k plus, the interim one for late 2024 and 2025 is likely to be between $30k and $35k, it might even be entry level Model 3/Y variants, who knows. It’s nonsense to say there will be a $35k car this year.

      $25000 was a price point meaningfully lower than the best selling cheap cars in the US, which is about 28k-30k. It would probably still need to be $25k.

    Basically the takeaway from Elon is that they will incorporate some of the new manufacturing process into the model Y and model 3 to reduce the cost further, and release cheaper versions of those same cars by end of this year or early 2025. Robotaxi/Cybertaxi will be unveiled Aug 8, 2024 but production probably won't start until Late 2025.

    Tesla didn't mention it in their earnings report and talked alot about robotaxi which seems a big error. Their primary mission should be either fixing or replacing the 4680; they didn't mention that either which means they wanted to avoid talking about it; i.e. it isn't going well. A new model would need a factory and that would mean years - is it going to use the 4680? Probably a good reason not to say anything. Until 4680 is fixed or replaced Tesla has a massive problem.

      My Model 3 can easily do that, winter or summer. If you are worried about running low on the way home, find a charging station, there are many that have a convenient snack or shop nearby. To avoid hitting crosstown Toronto traffic with under 10% when returning from the London area, I have a choice of Wendy’s or Timmy’s while charging. In either case, 10 minutes of Supercharging does the trick.
      At 200 miles per day, 4,000 per month, you are probably paying $600+ in gas, if you can charge at home you could save $500 per month. YMMV.

  • @krakken-
    @krakken- 9 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    It looks like Reuters was right, regardless of how Elon is trying to spin it. Cost reducing their current cars isn't the same as building a low cost car, as I am sure we will see when the actual pricing is revealed.

    • @frank4425
      @frank4425 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      They will use current production lines, but that's not the same as they'll be using the current cars. They will build a low cost car using current technology, rather than build new technology and new production lines from scratch. It's actually a very sensible move, as it will allow them to use the current production lines to their full capacity while keeping the current model Y and model 3 at their current margins. And it still leaves them the option of releasing an even cheaper car with the new production technology in the future

    • @krakken-
      @krakken- 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@frank4425 It may or may not be a sensible plan... Reuters wasn't claiming that Tesla was making a short-term sensible or non-sensible move. If Musk wants to now make his cost reduced Model 3 into a lower-cost Model 2, great. But it's pretty unlikely that this plan will be able to compete with actual lower cost EVs from China, which was what the actual low cost Model 2 was supposed to compete against.
      With its decline in sales and poor quality CT, it is probably the right business move at this point to just cost reduce the Model 3 rather than build a Model 2. But long term it's questionable.

    • @frank4425
      @frank4425 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The current production lines aren't being used to their full capacity. Even if Elon had stuck to his original plan of new manufacturing technology for a cheaper car, that problem would have remained unsolved. The problem was that those production lines were overbuilt for that particular price bracket. The only way they can use the existing production lines to their full capacity is to also use them for cheaper cars. Producing cheaper cars will also allow them to lower the production volume of model Y and model 3 and instead treat them as lower volume premium margin products. That would make existing owners of those products happy, as it would slow down their vehicle depreciation rates.
      Also, don't underestimate how much more cost efficient the current production lines can get. If other vehicle manufacturers are able to produce cheaper cars with current technology, there is no reason Tesla can't. Also, there is no rule saying that Tesla can't come up with two cheaper models, rather than one. They can always introduce a cheaper model with newer technology later.

    There is nothing to stop Tesla revisiting the original cheap (software locked) car. Or omitting certain functionality (via software) which can be bought and added at a later date. Also, with CATL themselves saying a 60kwh LFP battery will cost $3000 by the middle of this year, the most expensive part of a car could be dropping significantly. Maybe put the front wheel motor in the rear and with reduced performance and horsepower. Or just supply the front wheel motor only. However something like a Model 3 in the UK [£39,990] would maybe get down to £30,000 at best. What people never do it spec a competitor car that has the same features - a base model BMW 3 series is cheap, but thats because it comes with nothing and a wheezy 1.5L 3-cylinder engine.

    • @michaelnurse9089
      @michaelnurse9089 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Battery needs to be made in the US to get $3500 of the rebate. Tesla has to license the tech from CATL and produce it in a high labour cost country which means the battery will be $6000 and take 24 months to set up that factory.

    • @user-jt4fy4od9r
      @user-jt4fy4od9r 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@michaelnurse9089 Tesla buy CATL LFP Battery packs already (and have been stock piling). They do not need to set up a factory for LFP in the short term. They also produce their own 4680 in house for cyber truck. They have a dual manufacture agreement with Panasonic for 18650 which go in Model S and X. The 2170 cell used in Model 3 an Y are also a joint venture with Panasonic. As you say, Tesla are building an LFP plant in the USA but this is likely to allow cars sold with these packs to qualify for the rebates scheme in the USA.

Reuters found out they canceled the Model 2 (they did cancel a new model), investors panicked because no one really believes the robo-taxi is close, Musk said Reuters was lying, then in the earnings call Tesla execs pretended a cheaper vehicle made on the same lines (though with no hints of any re-tooling) is the Model 2 so they could keep pretending Reuters lied. It seems a lot like Reuters did them a favor by revealing how the market would react if they'd gone into the earnings call and tried to pretend canceling the Model 2 was a positive thing.
    Now we've got 4 months for Musk to resist the urge to agree with racists on Twitter to bring their sales back up before they show a robo-taxi thats either "We swear it will be here next year for realzies this time." or "This vehicle with a sensor pack on the roof looks like a Waymo copy, but we swear your camera only Tesla will also be a robo-taxi next year, keep buying FSD".

Not convinced that is going to be a winning strategy.

      The Model 2 built using the unboxed method was definitely cancelled as Reuters said. Even Musk didn't actually deny that, he just said that Reuters lied. Then he announced the 8/8 Robotaxi thing, basically confirming Reuters' story. Then under pressure from investors and the rest, they decided to do what all the other manufacturers do, namely launch derivatives of existing models on the same platform as their current models and use the same production lines. That was NOT the original idea for the Model 2 / 25k$ car, that was supposed to be a completely new platform and production method (unboxed). They just spin it to save face basically...

      They have no option because global car sales are down 50% thanks to inflation/interest rates. They have $30bn cash and they will burn $20bn on Robotaxi - half on design and half on production ramp - this has the most potential for returns and so is the 200 IQ move.

      @@michaelnurse9089 I don't know about 200 IQ, but it is copying a classic legacy auto move. However, competitors are moving faster and not seeing the sales drop. Like 80's Chrysler in the face of intensifying competition from Japan, it might make short term financial sense.

    They should absolutely cancel it.. I don't see a market for it.. .and the rate at which existing EVs are dropping we'll have a sub-$30000 EV by next year. Especially now that Kia and Hyaundai are doubling down on them with EV1 through EV9, covering most bases for sizes and types and keeping costs down. A Model 3 RWD will be $29,900 by 2025 for sure so there's no need for a smaller car

      That's ludicrous! Outside the USA European, Asian and South American countries want smaller card that fit into our medieval city streets and car parks etc. Tesla 3’s and Y’s are too big an expensive.

      @@simoncavill yea I was wondering if the small car world overseas was more into these than the US. But mini cooper is working on their own EV now 😉

    We shall see, we shall see. So, we will have a $25,000 model 2, and a fully autonomous robo taxi for sale within a year from now? That is what Elon musk is promising and you are parroting? I will see you in a year, my friend.
