To be fair Reuters said Tesla had abandoned the single piece casting, not giga casting. I think it was Reuters that pushed the single piece casting idea back in September last year. Single piece never made much sense to me as the battery is already a one piece floor. I would imagine possible large castings for the side frames, but they’re stamped in one go from tailored blanks. So I don’t know whether further castings would be any cheaper. We’ll have to wait and see what Tesla says on 8/8.

I think Reuters and the Viking are playing a semantic game, against a general arc of Elon de-emphasizing car stuff in favor of AI, self driving, robots, etc. To Reuters, the words "scrap" and "delay till who knows when" have the same meaning, where as the Viking sees them as different. Also, Reuters and I probably wonder if Elon is not spinning the truth so that the stock does not go down. The model 2 was being built in Mexico. Fine. Then no no no lets "scrap"/"delay indefinitely" Mexico and build the first line in Texas. Fine. Then Reuters reports that insiders are telling them that Tesla is canceling orders for the parts to build it in Texas and are "scrapping"/delaying indefinitely the model 2. This causes the stock to tank. Elon then says they are lying but is hardly specific. Then Elon says they are scrapping/delaying indefinitely the unboxed method and will just build the model 2 on existing production lines (and probably lose the cost reductions to make it 25K). That, in a way, sort of proves Reuters right. Then Musk lays off tons and tons of workers. Then Elon lays off almost all of the charging team. Then he says no, back to Mexico. But are they building it very fast? Then Reuters reports the Elon is losing interest in the mega cast for the model 2 (at least for now). The overall trend is that Elon seems to want Tesla car division to stop expanding and pour all available funds into robo-taxis which is what he seems really interested in. Reuters spins it up more than it is. And the Viking spins it down. But I am scared. I want EVs to succeed and Tesla isn't quite the knight for EVs it once was and now seems more interested in other things. Also, Elon can't stop making political statements that polarize people and he loves to lay people off with no notice.

  • @stevencole7331

I think the casting is great for profits and keeping prices lower but for insurance costs it goes though the roof . Once a single large casted item is damaged in a accident it totals the car . Cars in the past mostly had many panels . Say a quarter panel is damaged you could replace with new or even used . I have replaced myself and was quite easy . It's possible Tesla recognizes this as a problem as basically there cars are throw away after even a minor accident .

Sam, you don’t know if it was pure speculation. The fact of the matter is that there were many other reports prior regarding the M2 production plan. For example the serious debates as to whether the M2 will have a steering wheel due to Musk’s insistence that it be fully autonomous. Musk talked about single cast cars many times but those plans have clearly changed. Using existing lines to make a low cost car is clearly a major change. It seems to me Reuters got it mostly right but maybe should have said Tesla made major changes to their M2 plans.

Disagree in regard to the narrative that there's some kind of bias in either MSM or Reuters. The reality is that all news orgs are really feeling the heat - of the net and citizen journalism --- consider, for example - this channel. For many here, this is their source of news, not Reuters or other news sources. So, their reporting has been a bit more extended - they have been half right, half wrong on their reporting for a while - owing to their taking more chances. Case in point - the report regarding the low cost model was half true - Tesla was shifting gears to produce prototypes for both Robotaxi and the lower cost model and using that frame and body for the robotaxi. So technically, they did cut into the lower cost model on outset and they were promoting Robotaxi - the part where that article missed the mark is future state for the production line. The kind of massive changes happening at Tesla were first broken to press by Reuters, they just didn't have all of the information. .... Reuters is, for better or worse - throwing stuff at the wall to see if it sticks. And they have to. This channel literally cuts into their business, as do many others and they must try to get the scoop or they will lose their shirts. The key point of the article is that they report 3 piece gigacasts are still being used, but that apparently the plan to 1 piece the gigacast will be scrapped. Even though Tesla has not confirmed this, it makes sense - it's expensive to keep pushing for the one piece gigacast, however the cost savings in the new batteries that are coming out will drive the cost of the vehicle down far enough for them to make their price point so likely they +are+ going to slow roll the aggressive move to get one piece gigacasts finished off and on the line, and just use whatever line they have to produce the robotaxi and the newer model side by side using 3 piece process. There was always a question mark how big the casts would be, and if you can count three of them on the line then the reporting is accurate. I count three at time of writing. And I see no plan to swap them out before the new model and robotaxi launch. -- -Overall, agree they are the first to report anything dark about Tesla but I think they're just chasing another headline and right or wrong, this article is not yet disproven or disavowed by Tesla. Cheers.

I can see why Sam would try to balance up the negative press that Tesla gets, it is indeed common to read a story that is economical with the truth re Tesla, spinning a story to make it sound negative (eg the ‘recalls’ that are actually just OTA updates, there is some truth in it, but they make it sound to the average reader that thousands of cars are being returned to repair centres, which is not the case).
    BUT
Sam doesn’t yet seem to have twigged that when Musk said he was all in on robotaxis he actually meant it. He didn’t mean as well as everything else, he meant instead of everything else.
If you spend $20k’ish to make and sell a $25k Model 2, you might make £3k profit on the sale, plus a handful of dollars a month on subscriptions.
If you spend $20k on a Cybercab and deploy it as part of the Tesla robotaxi fleet you make at least $25K A YEAR in taxi fees.
Makes no sense to make any more Tesla cars or to install any more Superchargers, every production facility should be making Cybercabs.
Ah, except, you need to finish V12, get governed permissions, create the app infrastructure, build facilities to clean, repair and charge Cybercabs etc etc.
So they need to pretend to be still interested in regular cars to keep the revenue coming in while they transition, but they will be ruthless in how they do that. So no Model 2 as was expected, perhaps no Mexican plant, no more new Superchargers, no more advertising for regular cars, no new service centres.
They may created a Model 2.5, a cut down Model 3 hatchback with cheaper roof, cheaper seats, smaller batteries, smaller motor which can be built on current lines and sold for say under $30k.
Sam is busy fighting the old war, the one about no staff cuts, no supercharger cuts, no hold on new methods, $25k M2 still inbound etc etc.
Mentally Musk has moved on already but some of his management are trying to slow him down (for good and understandable reasons) with some sadly suffering the consequences.

so if you report something false and don't correct it you aren't to be trusted...i agree. i wonder how this channel holds up to that standard?

The question here is journalistic integrity. It used to be that, as a professional journalist, their integrity was beyond reproach. If a journalist got a single pertinent fact wrong, especially due to lazy research, it would be a career ending mistake.
Comparing some guy on the internet to a journalistic report is beyond unreasonable. Sam is here to entertain, and chooses to give well researched content. Journalists have a professional obligation to give reliable, unbiased, content and sometimes make that entertaining.
Not at all the same thing.
Sam is only obliged to hold up self-imposed standards, and no more. He owes us nothing.
