SPRING lambing with WINTER problems.🥶 | Vlog 679

  • Soooo.... I typically plan spring lambing for mid-March to make sure I MISS the frigid cold of winter.
Mother Nature is laughing right now.
March has been way colder than usual this week, making lambing (especially early lambs) very challenging in this barn.
Saturday was all about saving lambs, and I even learned a new Dextrose injection trick that I will be forever using!!
Sunday, we lost a set of twins that I'm still scratching my head about.
...but likely, the cold played a role.
AND... yet another ewe down with pregnancy toxemia... well, not quite down... YET.

An alternative heating pad is snuggle safe. It is a disk that heats in the microwave and keeps warm for 6 hours. The nice thing is no electricity for the animals to get tangled in. You can also move the orphan lambs to a pen and add the snuggle safe before bedtime for “motherly” warmth.

Something I've noticed (probably only of interest to me, but here we are), is that, over the years, seeing Kinsey mature, she has stopped just bolting down the alley the microsecond the door opens in the morning (I am speed!), and now does a brisk survey of her sheep friends, ESPECIALLY during lambing.
I love seeing how dogs' attention points change with experience, and she just loves any chance to help Mom care for her sheepies. Such a good girl! ❤

I couldn't help but laugh at the 3 bottle lambs trying to morph through the fence when you were feeding one and they all wanted it to be their turn instead!! Also, the 2 lambs you were tending when Mark came in, I think the one probably did have the inners partly on the outside. With that, I know it isn't a good chance for survival, and his/her sibling might have had something else similar just not noticeable. I'm just happy that the momma accepted those Lil ones. So happy that the ewe accepted the preg tox lambs. All of the lambs seem so tiny so far. There are so many really cute ones in this new group of lambs. The brown and white one, speckled ones and the little Billy. It's heartbreaking that Red prolapsed and will have to go after having her babies who hopefully make it. If you keep Teddy from the last group I can imagine how adorable her lambs will be. Hopefully things settle down and they figure out if it's the hay causing the problems with the ewes.

The milk was brought in by courier, and given to our NICU babies. Twenty years ago, but I’ll never forget the absolute love she showed to others. We had a thank you party for her, her other kids came along, it was a joyous farewell.

Sandi print out and laminate a flow chart for lambing problems! Don’t rely on internet connectivity to remind you of what needs done as it slows the process down. If it’s written out and posted on the wall you can quickly find the information and get a move on! No searching needed. Just like your feed sheets the info is there so there is no confusion.

    • @patpierce4854

I love that Lucy is watching so intently while you are fixing the warming box. The dogs are always so involved with what is happening. Lucy seems to be so caring.
It makes so much more sense to give 6 cc of Dextrose by intra-peritoneal injection than diluting it in water. I totally support you in that one decision.

    • @kristineteall368
      @kristineteall368 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I’ve always wondered why it was diluted in the first place, although I get it was you avoid hyperglycemia, but with the right dosage for their weight it shouldn’t be a problem. I’m so happy it worked out for her, it means saving more lambs in the future and they will get colostrum within 2 hours of birth instead of several which also means healthier sheep!

So happy the little boys made it!! The one boy legit looked like he was already dead when you brought him to the warming room. Totally limp. If you hadn’t said he had a heartbeat I would have thought he was dead. So glad he bounced back and glad he has a foster mom now!

I just love to watch you and your sheep! The way you encourage your moms' when in labor and how you welcome each lamb, so adorable. I can imagine the craziness you go through and each round is a pot shot as to what might happen. Just love watching you and all you do. And watching those babies running and jumping just makes me smile!!!

She reminds me of a labor and delivery nurse. One that's older than the patient and has seen it all. I was almost 30 and had a nurse talk like that. Lol. I wasn't offended like most would be I enjoyed her and watching her. She was a wonderful nurse and woman and she saved a nurse from being smacked! Lol.

Sandi, just another tip for the warming boxes. You'll retain more heat if you create a barrier between the box and the concrete. Bath mats work great or old towels. Hope it helps ❤

I’m so happy the nearly dead lamb made it! I feel like you really needed a win with how things have been going.
It might be useful to get a thermometer that will give you readings for those low lambs. You’ll be able to get a better feel for how quickly they are improving. If they read ‘low’ more than once it might not look like things are getting better, but they actually might be warming up. I had the exact same problem for the wildlife work I was doing, but was able to get an inexpensive one online that reads low temps. It really helped me see if an animal was improving or not.

It was actually for wildlife research. We were sedating river otters in the field to tag them so that we could track them and learn more about their habitat requirements and survival rates. This info is really important for conservation and habitat management.
The new drugs we were using had the side effect of making it harder for the animals to thermoregulate, but we were able to keep them warm with hot packs and blankets until they woke up and were released.

I just have to tell you how much I love your channel. I came across it several months ago and have been a huge fan of it! I work EMS and your videos have been a huge help when the job gets rough! I see how much compassion you have towards these animals and watching you come thru the ups and downs is something that helps me as well. I thank you so much for all you put into this channel and your sheep! I will say all of my coworkers have been hearing ‘baa has’ at all hours of the day and night and they get a kick out of it. My husband thought he was losing his mind because he’d keep hearing the baas and couldn’t figure out what the helk was going on, he now watches it as well! I look forward to your videos and again have to say Thank you!
