  • GUYS!!! Red wasn't finished!!! After ending the day yesterday with a beautiful set of twin boys, she thought she'd keep the last a secret and shock me first thing this morning with a GIRL!!
    ...and currently she is the only thing keeping a smile on my face.
    This lambing has been and continues to be an emotional rollercoaster.
    and today, I finally broke.

    I have seen so many farmers that become "immune" to still born or dying babies. To see someone who is still so passionate and trying so hard for each tiny life as hard as Sandi does really warms my heart.

      @Lifebyannabrown AGREE! Most farmers understand there is the circle of life with their animals and not all animals make it.
      I am so sorry Sandi got so emotional, I think she needs more sleep and is worrying about her darling daughter Jess.

      @Lifebyannabrown I don’t believe ‘less emotions’ lead to better solutions at all. Not entirely sure where you came up with that one?! Emotions spur on someone to get to the bottom of what’s going on. Having a nonchalant attitude like some farmers do (& the farmers I grew up surrounded by) meant the problem was never truly ever fixed, because they didn’t care enough to want to fix it. Sandy is a compassionate farmer & that’s always stood her in good stead.

      This. The day it stops bothering you to lose an animal is the day you really should consider if you need to be done with farming. If you don't have the heart for it anymore, there's no shame in that, just do yourself and the animals a favor and find another path that you'll enjoy more.

Thank you for sharing both sides of humanity. The B-roll you showed after the emotional event made me feel each of those mamma lambs were saying “thank you Sandi for being our nurse. Sandi, with your daughter’s medical issues and the ongoing lambing with occasional stillborn , you are all together human with your responses. Jess’s situation will work itself out and the lambing as well. Be sure to give Jess the best motherly hugs you can, often. And, when checking the lambing, take frequent looks at all the live lambs with their ewes and the bottlebabies as needed. You’re a good mommy in many ways. Lastly, have Mark give you hugs as needed. One more thing: when Jess is stable, lambing is done, you and Mark spend the weekend in the cabin and relax. Take care, Sandi.

    Despite the losses, you’ve had more ewe lambs have multiples than I’ve ever seen, and that’s a testament to the fact you love each and every one of them. It’s what makes you a good shepherdess and why we love you.

    • @kimmarievan-ever6599
      @kimmarievan-ever6599 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You're right..I don't think a single ewe has had just a single..some have one because the other died yes..but no singles..and these are ewe lambs..its their first rodeo and they've done so well.. Sandi has chosen well in which ewe's to keep and breed..

    • @caitlinw8351
      @caitlinw8351 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      genuine question, i’m a newbie- what’s the advantage to selecting ewes that have 3-5 lambs? they seem much more likely to lose some than the ones that have 1-3. or is that just my confirmation bias lol
      edit. is it just that if you lose 1 or 2, you still have 2 extra? i guess it’s economical.

    • @marilynbridges8697
      @marilynbridges8697 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sandi's goal is 2-3 lambs per ewe, because they are better able to raise them.

      Amen!!

    • @kimmarievan-ever6599
      @kimmarievan-ever6599 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@caitlinw8351 Sandi does actually prefer the 1 to 3 ratio as ewe's only have 2 teats so one lamb is likely to get pushed out with less milk abd become weak thats why she will sometimes try and foster one to a ewe that has had 1 or if she had 2 and one died because they get so much more nutrients from moms milk than the milk replacer although Sandi does use the best colostrum powder milk.. obviously if a momma has a really big supply of milk it could feed 3 but thats unusual.. if they've had 3 to 5 then they take the best drinkers and put them on the nanny as they're more likely to take to the fake teats than a poor drinker who will be left with momma.. you'll find the 'bottle babies' turn out smaller than ones left with mom.. and of course the cost of the powdered colostrum is very expensive..yes of course Sandi would get money when they are shipped but having to feed them cuts that down.. Sandi always prefers the 1 to 3 ratio for size too as higher multiples are usually born much smaller which isn't always good for not only their growth but % of survival. Its a lot more work with bottle babies too..she has to inoculate them as a certain time where lambs with mom get their protection through her milk.. you will see Sandi giving the bottle babies their jabs in a few weeks so they are protected before they start mixing with the other lambs
      .hope I've not confused you even more..I'm not an expert..I'm a townie but I've learnt all of this from watching Sandi for a few yrs now.. 🇬🇧💞🙏✝️🐑🐑🐑👍👏🐾🐕

So many farmers seem to just shrug these things off. You are a joy to watch and I was crying along with you and feeling your hurt. Don't ever change. Some animals just don't make it and that is natural and not a reflection of your skills as a sheep farmer.
