As an Ethiopian I’m ashamed to see you treated like this , no diaspora steals from a barber , that guy is not there for a visit or to take care of his mother , he is most likely deported and living there by scamming foreigners , I’m afraid , it’s dangerous for the locals to to have some one who speak English that well with 0 moral , he could easily scam them ,
That would have been my first question; "Oh, you grew up in the States? How long have you been back in Ethiopia?" Because 90% of the time, deportation for crimes is the case.
Yes you are correct, he was most probably a criminal in America and they put him on the first plane to Bole. Any way 600 birr for this cut is not too much for the French man. In Paris I pay for same hair cut for my kid 2 000 ethiopian birr.
@@martamarcha2850 You are missing the point entirely. He isn’t in France getting his haircut. He is in Ethiopia and those guys are of low character. That one that spoke English is probably a deportee and he preyed on someone’s vulnerability. There was something about him that didn’t comport.
Exactly! Why would a diaspora visiting his sick mother put in all that time and effort to make less than $8.00 USD? You can even see from his friend's face + reaction @ 13:40 that the story is BS.
When he started speaking I thought, wow, he speaks good english. But when he said he was born in Texas, it suddenly felt that his english is not as good as of people who grew up in USA.
Mr. Yves, peoples are not using the tree twigs as teethbrush because they are poor, but because those twigs are natural medicinal for teeth. In Ethiopia, trees like Vernonia amygdalina, eucalyptus and jacaranda are mostly used as teethbrush because of their teeth medicine and without added chemicals.

Well, he weighted a life vs money, and money prevailed. But it's understandable, as we talk about a couple of Euros. Likely he is smart enough to threaten them with demonizing their country in beautiful eyes of France and rest of beautiful Western society. I was realy embarrassed watching him.

The guy whos back in Ethiopia to visit his “sick mother” is most likely lying and probably been deported for crime. There are a lot of deported Ethiopians who were once living in the USA that live in Ethiopia now. I’ve seen them and met them, they all hangout together and all speak good English
Not only Ethiopian, but we have a lot of Eritrean who are deported from the U.S. to Ethiopia because Melese Zenawy, the previous Ethiopia 🇪🇹 prime minister , made a deal with Americans to take Eritrean criminals to Ethiopia, which is a terrible mistake..

As I’m Ethiopian I was super mad cause the price was too expensive. But next ask the price first and deal with the person who provided you services do not deal with tourist guides. If you watch the video around 27:46 minutes behind your chair you will see the barber received only 100 birr.
One of my friends had big problems in the nose with microbes he is still under antibiotics since years. Don’t let people introduce things in your nose that are not sterilized.
I just watched the vid of you in Kenya. You got a good haircut, a shave, a full-on massage, and great conversation = $13. Here in Ethiopia, a good haircut, and a rough shave = $12. No worries, we all get scammed here and there. You handled it well. Good luck with future posts.
They said to the barber that he has to consider them, the haircut, and filming the work when calculating the price... I bet that those scammers took 2/3 of the payment.
The tooth brush is made of special wood that has a natural tooth cleaning and probably strengthening chemical. It also has a pleasant long lasting test keeps mouth wet, fresh, especially in warm dry weather. Basically people go around cleaning their tooth all day.😃😃
Why these strangers are the one to negotiate the price? It is so disgusting. The guy even didn't handover the whole money to the barber. As an Ethiopian I am ashamed of them. By the way by just looking at them and how bold they are in asking for free lunch It is reasonable to think that they are in the situation of substance abuse.

With their language skills, clean cut look, nice clothes, etc… these guys looked a lot like local secret police or part of an organized crime syndicate. They looked out of place the moment they approached you. The poor barber was obviously not comfortable with them.
That's not too expensive, really - you got a full haircut and beard shave! But please be careful in your adventures - you're a little bit too trusting. When the guys stuck around after showing you the barbershop, that should have been a give- away something's up.
Not too sure here; it's a poor country, you film in there, you CAN afford to overpay by a little bit - 8 Euros is somewhat "fine" and not actually outrageous. And that's n o t the price in Europe; even in Georgia or Armenia, you'll pay usually more than that for a haircut and a shave. :-) In Germany, going to a Persian or Arabian barber, it'll cost nowadays at least +/- 20 Euros. Most importantly: Why wouldn't you ask for the price BEFORE getting the haircut and the shave? (-:
I agree with you here 💯 filming the the process of hair cut and putting in youtube itself you make money .. So no need to complain about few dollars . It is what it is ...move on

My god, man, how did you get through this?! Oh, I see, at 20:09, he seals all of your cuts with a dirty rag. That was a nice touch. It really speaks to the professionalism of this establishment.

@@martamarcha2850
You are missing the point entirely.
You should ask the price before you cut your hair
Very important to ask the price first 💰
Its all about reaspect not the money
They often change the price after
In Arabic it’s called Siwak
@@zero-nolimit3402 In Arabic its correct name is called Musiwak. The word musiwak is derived from the Arabic verb "yasawik" which means to brush.
@@alikodinko9158 👍🏻👍🏻
Siwak and Miswak are both right..

@@zero-nolimit3402 I believe you, since the Arabs have different dialects ( اللهجات) In Amharic it is called Mefakiya ( መፋቅያ ) and in Oromic it is called Rigaa.

Siwak is the tree itself while Miswak is in this form because it is a tool name so it rhymes with مِفعال

25:18 Yves hands 2 bills to the guy (looks like blue and pink), his friend takes them, then if you watch, the friend goest to hand the bills to the barber, but keeps the inside one (pink) and only gives the outside one (blue) to the barber (this happens around 25:25).
Reminds of that scene from The Office where Michael asks Erin to shave him. That looked extremely painful and unpleasant.
They scammed you and then asked for a free lunch. The barber did not seem to like them either. They are professional scammers.
Wow ! The barber didn't like it at all. These guys knew what they were doing. PRICKS!
the audacity 😂
no, it was an option to buy them lunch OR pay extortion
How is it scam? They provided him service, Nothing is free.
When someone goes extra step to help you it’s better to assume they want something in return.
In their defense they never said their service is free lol
@@matusala8322 They would be totally entitled to get payment for their service, if there was an agreement for such a service. From the video, it appears that they were being just helpful to this foreign traveller. Why "overcharge" his hair cut ? These two gentlemen have lived abroad (1/4 of a century) and spoke excellent English, no excuses here.
Yves, you are a brave man to stand up to them whilst sat down in a room full of barber knives!
Well, he weighted a life vs money, and money prevailed. But it's understandable, as we talk about a couple of Euros. Likely he is smart enough to threaten them with demonizing their country in beautiful eyes of France and rest of beautiful Western society. I was realy embarrassed watching him.
Like they kill u lol ?
im so happy he did this made me feel great! fuck those guys. Great job Strong man Yves!

Watching you since 2023 when you been in Egypt, i really like your real reactions and feeling about aroundings. Other channels don't do that. Best travel channel :)
Great video, shame about the scam. The people there don’t seem very hospitable, but rather hostile, when you was walking down the street, they were staring, maybe scheming to rob you some how, then you had people follow you, this has totally put me off going to this place, so I can safely say, I wouldn’t go there ever. I enjoyed your video though, and glad your brave enough to go there. 👍👍👍

What I noticed is the fact that you integrate easily among the Ethiopian community, you are really cool with these people who themselves are very nice
Indeed, that's what I love about Ethiopia, I find it very easy to integrate myself in the community
Their both Christian’s and most Ethiopians are very welcoming people. I also believe he’s been to Ethiopia before.

I agree theses always going to be a bad apple’s everywhere you just need to differentiate them from the good people.
The guy whos back in Ethiopia to visit his “sick mother” is most likely lying and probably been deported for crime. There are a lot of deported Ethiopians who were once living in the USA that live in Ethiopia now. I’ve seen them and met them, they all hangout together and all speak good English

I agree. He is making up stories. Scumbag lier

The Ethiopian "American" probably was deported. One of the reasons I hesitate in visiting developing nations or 3rd world nations (although I still visit). Business tend to be unjust. This could be a reason why many of these countries are developing slowly 😢
That shave looked like a torture technique used at Guantanamo Bay.
Those two guys are scammers 😢
You should have reported them to the local police
Shame..
Very shame
Haa, you think the local police would give 2 shits?
Bringing awareness and shaming them on social media probably has a more effective outcome.
If you died TODAY, where would you be spending eternity? Have all your sins been forgiven or are you still hoping that you're a good enough person to earn a spot in heaven.
The reality is that no one can earn a spot, our sin disqualifies us. But the God news is that Jesus paid for our qualification by dying on our behalf taking the punishment that we deserved.
JESUS said, "For God so loved the world, that He gave His one and only Son; that WHOEVER believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life." - John 3:16
Nothing is more important than your eternal destination. Please, don't say, "When I get older I'll get right with God' or 'I'll get serious with Jesus one day when I'm ready.'
Don't wait any longer, today is the day of salvation. Get right with God today, for tomorrow very well might be too late.
We invite you to REPENT and accept that Jesus Christ is Lord of your life by praying this simple prayer out loud right now...
'Heavenly Father, I turn away from my old life and repent for my sins. I believe that Jesus came for me, that Jesus died for me and that Jesus rose again for me so that I can be forgiven and receive eternal life. I believe in my heart and confess with my mouth that Jesus Christ is the Lord of my life from this day. Through Him and in His Name, receive the gift of eternal life. I ask you to fill me with the Holy Spirit and lead me for the rest of my life. In Jesus name - Amen.

I appreciate all you efforts to learn and pass your knowledge of different cultures and facts. The wooden tooth brushes people use are not like you said not because people don't have money it is traditional brush maybe long before the modern world came up with what we use now. Keeping snow white and clean teeth was a trdition. Had you tried one or 2 of them you would have learned why. Not every wood can be a brush, most have good flavor and are sweet. Have a great day.

Damn that dude just going straight in with the razor.
The queueing experience for buses in Ethiopia Addis (Kigali, Rwanda)equally amused me. Our Ugandan passengers do jot have that queueing patience for buses or taxis
As I’m Ethiopian I was super mad cause the price was too expensive. But next ask the price first and deal with the person who provided you services do not deal with tourist guides. If you watch the video around 27:46 minutes behind your chair you will see the barber received only 100 birr.
That’s so sad! The man who did the work got less than the men who did nothing. No wonder the barber didn’t seem to like them!
One of my friends had big problems in the nose with microbes he is still under antibiotics since years. Don’t let people introduce things in your nose that are not sterilized.
That’s why you always ask the price before the haircut and after they have given you a price, you go out and ask locals how much it cost for a haircut
I feel you. Nobody wants to be scammed
It pains me to see a genuine person like you get taken advantage of, but i'm so glad you speak up for yourself.
The real price between 50-100 birr in Addis Ababa😢😢😢😢
I just watched the vid of you in Kenya. You got a good haircut, a shave, a full-on massage, and great conversation = $13. Here in Ethiopia, a good haircut, and a rough shave = $12. No worries, we all get scammed here and there. You handled it well. Good luck with future posts.
And after that they ask for a lunch? lmao shame !!! Par contre tu as très bien gérer la situation et ça empêche pas d'avoir le sourire bravo.
You handled it well...they should have been more direct and honest before they took you there.
Oh well...life goes on
That's the scam...they're nice and friendly so that u don't suspect anything, then they getcha
Sorry about the unfortunate experience.
Thank you very much !
They said to the barber that he has to consider them, the haircut, and filming the work when calculating the price... I bet that those scammers took 2/3 of the payment.
It’s fine my friend you just bought them nice chat ! This happen everywhere they did you smoothly!
25:31 "Why dont you invite us for lunch" bro woulda become another war casualty XD
The tooth brush is made of special wood that has a natural tooth cleaning and probably strengthening chemical. It also has a pleasant long lasting test keeps mouth wet, fresh, especially in warm dry weather. Basically people go around cleaning their tooth all day.😃😃
I swear to God, i was scared that he was going to shave his lips clean from his face! 😂
he went 2 yr old throw away razor dollar general cream remnants Ninja style
Why these strangers are the one to negotiate the price? It is so disgusting. The guy even didn't handover the whole money to the barber. As an Ethiopian I am ashamed of them. By the way by just looking at them and how bold they are in asking for free lunch It is reasonable to think that they are in the situation of substance abuse.
You never see me get a shave from anyone else. I can do my own shaving thank you very much.
0:50 These sticks are called the siwak, and they do not have many benefits for the health of the mouth and gums. Muslims have used them for a long time, and their use is better than toothbrushes. You can search for them.

I completely agree with your wife, it is very sad that this kind of things happen, it is sad, because Ethiopia is such a fascinating country.
Not everyone is an angel in the western countries too. There is always good and bad people every where . Ethiopia is not an exception.
With their language skills, clean cut look, nice clothes, etc… these guys looked a lot like local secret police or part of an organized crime syndicate. They looked out of place the moment they approached you. The poor barber was obviously not comfortable with them.
Any police Don't have a good English like that
And waaaay go friendly and talkative.
In these countries you should always ask for the price and negotiate it before you get the service not after
Feeling the pain and the scam by the screen is already possible...💇🏾♂️💯🤔
That's not too expensive, really - you got a full haircut and beard shave! But please be careful in your adventures - you're a little bit too trusting. When the guys stuck around after showing you the barbershop, that should have been a give- away something's up.
Great episode Yves. Sorry they caused problems. Stay safe!
As an Ethiopian I’m ashamed to see you treated like this....😥☹
Don't worry, there is horrible people in any country, we still love Ethiopia. ❤
In Germany, going to a Persian or Arabian barber, it'll cost nowadays at least +/- 20 Euros.
Most importantly: Why wouldn't you ask for the price BEFORE getting the haircut and the shave? (-:
I agree with you here 💯 filming the the process of hair cut and putting in youtube itself you make money ..
So no need to complain about few dollars .
It is what it is ...move on

that’s some ridiculous price for such filthy equipment and low quality place. sorry yves but i would’ve never let him touch my face with that lack of hygiene especially the razor! man you took a big risk there 😅 better luck on your next haircut.
It’s funny that he said he lived in Dallas Ft. Worth. Being from Texas my whole life, we know they are two separate cities. That would have been my first clue he was going to scam you. Hate it happened and very brave thing to confront them at the end!
I'm from Europe and in my country 8 $ for a haircut is very cheap. I usually pay around 15-25 $. For a crappy barber 8 is fine.
