I honestly miss the "freestyle" battle era more. To me, there is something really special about mentally creating a witty, spur of the moment punchline to outthink your opponent. Not knowing who you're going to battle but still being ready for lyrical combat, to me, there's a certain level of respect that goes with that.
The written battle era was an interesting transition in the late 2000s and even in the 2010s, but I'm getting tired of it. The rounds were getting too long, and as much as one can critique freestyle battlers for being repetitive, having too many fillers, (etc), I think that with these 3 ,4, 5 minute or unlimited rounds, it's hard to keep me interested for that long because there's a lot of filler in there as well. Most of all, many of these written leagues are not even judged battles, so nothing is really at stake anymore.
