I went to see him perform live in Copenhagen, Denmark, and I was one of maybe 5 women in the whole venue (and alone). I never felt more safe at a concert in my life, and it was due to him encouraging the crowd to be respectful to everyone. I also got to meet, chat and take a photo with him. He took genuine interest in my home country, Romania, and we bonded over it. Such a nice, respectful guy. One of my fondest memories.

As a black man on the west coast that’s used to being around Dominicans and Puerto Rican’s on the east coast….. the west definitely treats you different there’s something in the air with the brown folks against us you can feel it !!
I think it has to do with 2 things . When Mexicans started really coming here in large numbers bc of nafta in the late 80s n 90s they were terrorized by black gangs in a lot of areas. The kids grew up n said fuck u foos too . Also, since colonization Latin American people(brown ppl) have been brainwashed to want to be white or try to emulate white people consciously or subconsciously.
I think it's the chicanos who are more openly hostile towards black ppl often times due to bad past interactions (being bullied, robbed, gang warfare etc) and an even more intensified wanting to be white and not only white but an anglo specifically because while there is colorism and racism in Mexico most Mexicans from Mexico will treat ppl with respect regardless of how they feel towards u.
Many Mexicans have African ancestry they don't know about bc their ancestors often times immediately mixed with the local native population so some of their more African features don't stand out as much. Let's not forget that Mexico was the 2nd stop for many enslaved ppl for the first roughly 200 yrs r after their first stop in the carribean Islands. The media and law enforcement today plays a big role in fueling hostility towards one another.
