  • I’ll show you how to flash Marlin firmware onto your Anycubic i3 Mega or any 3D printer using either Cura or OctoPrint. Marlin is an open source firmware that drives most of the world’s 3D printers, and it offers many amazing features over the stock Anycubic firmware. Upgrading your printer to the Marlin firmware can be a great next step in improving your 3D printing process!

    Great video! Thanks again! If I could make a video suggestion, i would love to see a tutorial on mesh bed leveling with the new 1.1.9 Marlin Firmware... or any of the other features. I have 1.1.9 installed now, but I (probably) don't know what all I have gained with it. Possibly a video outlining some of the new features and how to use them? ;-) -- sincerely a happy new subscriber and an i3 Mega owner!! :-) Please!! Keep the video coming!!

    I have installed the the TMC2208 drivers and new Marlin firmware and the printer is much improved. The only issue is now is, after printing for an hour or so, I'm getting extruder thermal runaway!

    • @ModernHobbyist

      Hey Paul, thanks for the comment and sorry for the late response! My first thought is that maybe the connectors for the thermistor were somehow loosened while you were installing the new stepper drivers. Other than that a faulty thermistor would be a good guess too. Hope that helps, and good luck tracking down the issue!

Me podrías ayudar?? Sabrías decirme que puede pasar? Gracias por el video y un saludo desde España. Thanks!!

    Thanks, great video. It might be worth reminding the good people that the standard issue SD card with Anycubic printers has Chinese characters (which are incompatible with the Marlin firmware) in some of the filenames. This will cause an issue where the Print menu freezes (but all other menus work ok). The guide does mention this, but I missed it/disregarded it and lost an hour debugging! In my case, I simply removed all Chinese characters from filenames on the SD card and it cured the problem.

    I only have problems since upgrading drivers and switching to David Ramiros software.
    Constant layer shifts when printing larger objects and stuttering when printing curved objects.
    tried vref in 0.05 steps from 0.85 - 1.15 without any success.
    All this is apparently fixed in the Knutwurst version 1.1.7 but its still in beta.

    Your video was the easiest to follow on youtube. After watching it twice I decided to try the firmware update using Cura. Power Cycled the printer. No more beeps. On the LCD I went to agout and I see the update. Yas directed in the later part of the video all was left was to execute the M502 and M500 comands. Easy right???? Nope. My laptop sees the printer on Com8. Cura does not see the printer now. Any idea?

    If you do M503 before you flash the printer, you can see the esteps in console. That way you don't have to go through the estep calibration again. My esteps were 384 from the factory

    • @ModernHobbyist
      @ModernHobbyist  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the comment Neal! That's absolutely correct, but it wouldn't hurt to re-calibrate after flashing, since the newer firmware will potentially control the steppers differently. You would likely get by fine with your old E-Steps, but it doesn't hurt to make sure! Thanks again for the comment, I truly appreciate it!

    Thanks for the great video! I've just recently started updating my Anycubic i3 Mega S and your videos are really helpful and easy to follow, I installed Marlin and the printer stepper motors seem to operate smoother and quicker.
    The only problem I'm having is that the extruder isnt extruding enough filament to print anything, the printhead is moving around but very little filament is coming out of it and its coming out really stringy. I use Cura and i recently tried setting up Octoprint to see the machine code to be able to see whats going on but it doesnt seem to be able to connect to the printer (I have the printer plugged into my laptop via USB as i dont have a Pi setup).
    Would you have any idea on how to possibly fix the under-extrusion with Marlin? Thanks again dude!

    Hi. I have been trying to flash the Ramioz Marlin to my Anycubic i3 Mega, but it seems that everything I try fails. I have changed my drivers to TMC2208's and am trying to use the 'reversed' hex file (motors are version 2).I am using the latest version of Cura - 4.10, but still problems. I have plugged the printer to my computer (running latest Windows 10), via the usb cable, but every time I try the 'update firmware' program runs to about half-way, then gives me an error message, saying that 'Firmware update failed due to an unknown error' - No connection with the printer'. However, I have checked all cables and connections, but still get the same fault message. Is there any other way I can install the hex file? Don't really want to build a file from scratch with Visual Studio Code - and not sure even then it would work. Am I missing some obvious thing? Further, if I can't get it to update, can I just leave the quieter TMC2208's in the machine and still have it run? Apologies for being a pain, but I am running out of options. (I am pretty sure there is no way to 'unwrap' a hex file - or not? Cheers, Noel

    hi great video and very informative, i just installed this marlin firmware onto my anycubic i3 mega, but i still cant seem to get the printer to do a filament change, where before the update it wasn't doing anything at all, now when i modify g code in cura to do a filament change, it now retracts the filament as it should but when i load the new filament in it doesn't seem to allow me to resume, is this a common thing with anycubic or have i done something wrong.

    • @ModernHobbyist
      @ModernHobbyist  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the comment! I haven't tested this out too much, but if you are using the same version of Marlin as me, you should see "Filament Change Resume" in the Print->Special Menu on your printer. It is all the way at the bottom of the special menu. Alternatively, you could send the M108 command to your printer from either Cura or OctoPrint if you have it setup.

I've read that some boards may not be able to update (unless I'm confusing this info with what applies to the Ender). Any idea how to fix this? I haven't tried updating via the octoprint method but I could configure a raspberry pi to get octo up on this machine if that's one way to force an update.

      Hey Ezra, thanks for the comment. If my memory serves me correctly, I think the hotend thermistor is T0. It sounds like a loose wire somewhere, either the green plug on top of the hotend, or potentially somewhere inside the printer. Shouldn't be a difficult fix, but might take some investigation to find the loose wire. Let me know if that helps!

      Hey Bobby, thanks for the comment! You don't need to flash the machine with Marlin as long as you flipped the connectors. The flipped connectors is only necessary if you intend to keep the original firmware on the machine. If you wish you flash Marlin, though, there are multiple binary options (one for flipped connectors and one without flipped connectors). Hope that helps!

    • @ModernHobbyist

      If you are installing the 2208reversed.hex then you don't need to flip the connectors. I flipped mine because I installed the drivers with the stock Anycubic firmware, so the motor connectors had to be flipped. That would be one bonus when switching to the newer 2208reversed.hex, no need to flip the connectors. Cheers and good luck!
