This was neat! amother Mario Metroidvania in smw that I immediately think of is "Mushroom Kingdom: Under Crimson Skies". You should give that one a go!
The MARIO franchise has been a really interesting one. in basically every game your fully capable to do everything Mario is known for being able to do. i'd like to think this is why they made Super Mario RPG the way they did so you actually had to learn how to play it unlike most any other game like Mario 64 and Odyssey where your fully capable with only needing to know how to perform each move Mario is capable of where taking control of certain enemies and using certain things are purely location based "power ups" instead of the traditional power up where many an RPG maker player attempted to create a metroidvania style level requiring the player to need certain power ups to unlock and acquire other powerups and items. The way i see it, if someone is going to make a Mario Metroidvania it would have to allow Mario to change abilities as needed from whichever abilities he managed to unlock/acquire as a permanent thing he can make use of but only be able to use one at a time. Think Wario in disguise, normally a separate IP is made use of to test or make use of questionable things. Just ask the Animaniacs. But that's just a theory... a comment theory.

I had a previous comment but I though it sucked so I re-wrote it to be better. Mario starts in his small form and has his moveset from SMB1. First power up is the Mushroom which makes him bigger, lets him break overhead blocks, crouch and every mushroom found going forth is a Max HP Up. After a mini-boss with a Giant Bat Mario gets the Power Jewel. This just gives him the P speed bar mechanic from SMB3. I called it the 'Power Jewel' bc 'P Jewel' or 'Jewel of P' sounds stupid. After a boss fight with 2 mega-hammer bros Mario gains his equivalent to a whip or sword, the hammer. Letting him swing it in an arc when stood on the ground to break blocks and attack enemies from the side. Next let's really start the party with something crazy. The Blue Shell will be the first power up to make use of Mario new found speed. When at full speed by crouching Mario will enter the shell and it'll function identically to how it does in New SMB for DS. It goes through 1 block gaps so it's a slide. It's really fast. And crosses over spikes. For some air mobility Mario will fight a big ghost with a lantern, and upon defeat the lantern will break to reveal the Silver Luma from the Galaxy duology to give you Mario's Spin. Which is the same has it is in Galaxy but also enables spin jumping and mid-air twirls from the New SMB series. Spin jumping can hit spiked enemies btw. Next up after defeating a giant Vulture that turns into Slogra, Mario will gain the cap feather. Giving him a P speed version of gravity boots, psuedo flight and extending the range of his spin attacks. It'll even slow your fall like the flying armor soul from aria/dawn of sorrow. Next is the Metal Cap. Mario can now ground pound, this damages enemies, breaks blocks, is cancelable with a twirl, You can even do the homing ground pound from galaxy as well. While I wanted to use the Fire and Ice flowers, the Hammer feels under powered. So let's fix that with the Fire Drive and Ice Smash Badges! Mario can now through a flaming hammer like the Axe subweapon to light fires and melt ice. While the Ice smash is a horizontal spin that freezes things around Mario and extinguishes fires. Mario's kit is looking pretty cracked rn, but let's round it out some more with proper flight. The Red Star will fall from the heavens upon beating death and grant Mario a true equivalent to Alucard's 'soul of bat' and it'll function identically to it's appearance in Galaxy 1. For a miscellanious power up, the Frog Suit gives Mario the ability to properly swim. Now being fast enough to make it past jet streams. I wanted to use the wing cap for something, so let's give Mario his long jump, double and triple jump from the 3D entries. Note this isn't leap stone type double jump, it's just the extra height jumps from mario 64 and onwards. Mario can also find the Spike shield, Ice power, Fire power ans Zap Tap badges to be able to jump on the enemies that the badge correlates to. If you really want form of mist just put down a switch for the invisible cap so invis. cap blocks appear across the castle.
The alien fight is weird, but I'm just glad to see a final boss fight that isn't just Bowser in his freaking koopa copter again. I swear every rom hack ever uses that exact fight as the final boss every single time with maybe a new attack or a model change or something at best.
Not that hard to imagine. Just have certain power ups only appear as you progress, have them show up in earlier areas after finding them in later ones, and let them take the player to new places in the earlier ones that previously could not be reached. The only really weird part would be the complete removal of a map or level select area and addition of save areas, but a lot of the Super Mario RPG types are close to it. The designer went about that a little differently than I would have. I would have kept the gets hit lose power up system.
