I like the looks of the new Trax and I was seriously thinking about it in the 2RS trim. I changed my mind when I found out the 1.2 L engine has a timing belt-in-oil which is a horrible design. I’ve see where the rubber timing belt can shed debris into the engine oil and clog the oil pick up tube and destroy the engine. I’m not a fan of tiny turbo engines as it is but that engine is a recipe for disaster. I’d feel a little more comfortable with the 1.3L engine that is optional in the Trax’s sister vehicle the Trailblazer, at least that one uses a steel timing chain. The 155 hp 1.3L in the Trailblazer also gets about 2 mpg better than the 1.2L telling me the 1.2 is strained at only 137 hp output.
One has a standard transmission and the other CVT. CVT's are ticking time bombs 💣. That's the trade off for me. I got the Trax LT . I'm at 500 miles. The power is okay during city driving. About to take a small road trip in a couple weeks. So far I been getting 27 gas mileage in the city. The trailblazer was my first choice but settled for the Trax because it's bigger.
Engine is too small, must be at least a 2.5 or larger. No where is the weight of the Trax to be found, GM doesn't want you to know it is probably too heavy for the 1.2 engine.
@@whiz3528 it weighs just under 3100 lbs. I agree the 1.2 is too small. I have a 2020 gmc Terrain with the 2.0 turbo 252 hp 260 ft lbs torque it weighs 3400 lbs and hauls a$$ for a grocery getter.
I have a 1.2 with a cvt in a buick encore gx..it gets up and moves just fine and had it up to 88mph and crusing on the interstate with a.c on and it just kept on going and still got 31 mpg to boot. It will run at about 3K rpm's which seem s like alot but then again small engine but I have noticed no need to floor it to get up to speed or even kick the turbo in that much to get going. I have a friend who has a 2021 with a 1.2 encore cvt combo and he noticed also that it scoots just fine even with the a/c on...he already has 55K on his 21 and no engine problems at all or cvt, I only have 12K on mine and no issues either but I don't use it for racing either...LOL
I used all my GM rewards as downpayment and got an LS of this. CHEAPEST zero options, plastic hubcaps. Old School. Is fun. Got a new car for used car price almost. I don't drive that much now that most of us work from home. This was replacing a vehicle that had pretty much rusted away and was no longer drivable. I did some research before I signed the paperwork thought. The engine proven itself very reliable and been in the Base TrailBlazer since 2017. The 2024 Trax, is basically the what GM has been selling since 2017 or before in Asia, Latin America, etc. as the Tracker. In the 90's the Chevy Tracker was briefly sold after most GEO's became Chevy's but the Tracker of the 1990's was a rebadged Suzuki.
I live in the northeast ( we get decent snowfall) and I see these everywhere. My concern is are these Chevy dealers telling their customers that their crossover doesn’t have awd. Yea, I understand if you know how to drive in the snow, fwd isn’t a problem. But I feel most of these customers are not the type of people that would consider themselves good snow drivers. I just don’t understand who makes a crossover SUV and decides not to add all wheel drive as an option. Like, were they under the influence at Chevy when they designed this thing?
Good points but also remember crossovers are not true SUVs so even with awd that wouldn’t make some of these vehicles any better. Specially when they add 20 plus inch wheels on some of vehicles 🤣👍
I had one rs1 brand new… nice design but radio sometimes not working…. and air conditioning no real cold just a little bit… so I trade it in after 6 months
It's the first Trax review that says sporty about Trax and doesn't complain about underpowered engine and poorly tuned transmission. Everyone else does a lot.
When I review I’m thinking like the buy so what does this compare to, value and packages. If I’m spending 35-40k yes it’s underpowered and not sporty inside but the vehicles in its class, this has a sporty interior and power is about the same with a great overall value 👍
One problem? If you are a fan of Sirius XM there is no playback function installed in the software in the 2024 Trax vehicles.. Chevrolet cheapened out on the software.

After driving a Toyota corolla cross compared to this I was sold on the cross hands down. Built in USA and not oversea etc., Those who don't understand practicality, keeping it simple and thus reliability don't know toyotas. It's no frills are for these reasons. Toyota makes more vehicles in the states and employs more including suppliers than any other car company.
@gordm5567 the Corolla cross suv is manufactured in Huntsville Alabama. It's a new factory which has been building them since their US inception in 2019. You were meaning the Trax I'm sure now. Don't know much about those. GM moves their manufacturing around so much abroad and in US, never know where their from. Consistency equals quality and all toyotas manufacturing is at same places thus much better quality.
Given the value proposition, from what I have read and seen (even the carcarenut, a Toyota mechanic, likes this car). The timing belt should not be that big an issue. I like the regular transmission vs CVT, it sits a bit higher than a sedan, it has a very good safety rating, quiet enough, decent ride, yada yada. For what I am looking for, saving a few bucks on a recent vintage used Kona or whatever does not quite cut it for me.
No there are 2 serious problems with the Trax RS2. The carriage bolts from the factory weren't tightened allowing the gas peddle to shake and they are what keeps the front attached to the body. (2) Air condenser failed after 2 weeks. 3 times in the shop before that malfunction was found. Been driving an Equinox for over a month for the repairs to be made.
Well I just got a 2024 and it's actually my second Trax. The first was a 2023 and three weeks after i got it a lady ran a red light and ultimately it got totaled. At barely 40mph they estimated the total damages at $13k so they totaled it. This 2024 only had 9 total miles and it literally just got delivered. So far I love it but I'm no mechanic by any means. So I was just watching Videos to see what other's say just so i won't be surprised by potential mechanical issues. Aside from some minor nit picking things the worst I've seen was issues with the turbo and stuff with the cooling system. So I fully understand you get what you pay for. Those issues seen fairly minor and reasonable.
Small turbo charged engines work really hard, and need more frequent oil changes (at least every 6 months or 5000 miles with full-synthetic). Also it's a good practice to allow the engine to idle for a minute or two after arriving at your destination (especially if it was driven hard). This allows the very hot oil in the turbo to circulate through the system and cool down a bit before shutting the engine off.
So many cars out there have CVTs now. It's horrible. Good job Chevy for choosing the 6 speed. Now, bring back the 6 speed in the Malibu. I will buy one.
Thanks for this video! I am about ready to buy one of these for a lot of different reasons that you pointed out. I just test drove one today and I really liked it. Then again I'm not into posh vehicles.
I drove back and forth to work every day for 30 years, 80 miles total. Never had anything but rear wheel and snow tires. Not one single accident or mishap. My secret? Slow down and take your time in bad weather.
Saw a TH-cam video of the Trax that's sold in China and Korea.. has automatic tailgate opening feature, memory seats, power seats across most trim levels. Why do the send "watered down" versions to US. SMH.
Im glad they didn't go down the CVT rabbit hole with this car. Usually when I see CVT I walk away. I am a little disappointed in the engine offering. I don't see a turbo 3 cylinder lasting long enough for reliability. A naturally aspirated 2.0 liter with that traditional transmission would have been great and the option for a 5 speed manual in all trim levels would be icing on the cake.
As a senior, this car isn't for those of us. Took it for test drive as I liked the new styling. Getting in I had to wedge my way into seat. I really liked the dashboard layout but everything around me,the door panels, seats, console was just really cheap looking. It had a very stiff ride compared to my Equanox. Rear visibility out window was really bad. I learned this wasn't the car for me.
Thanks for your comment Lilly, but that figure is for a stripped down model that doesn't appeal to a majority of buyers. For a few thousand more the Equanox is a better car to buy.
Trax was my second choice last August. My hesitation was the new technology, and unproven 3 cylinder, turbo charged engine. Turbos don't have a very good track record for long term dependability. The Nissan Versa won my hard earned dollars: Much cheaper (under $20,000 out the door), Well proven naturally aspirated 4 cylinder engine, well proven manual transmission, and substantially better MPG (I'm getting 42-43 MPG mixed driving). Yep, I gave up a few creature comforts, but I really like basic economy cars, and the Versa has most of the safety features.
@@HawkeyeRides I'd rather pay for it and know it's going to last. Not just have it for 3 years, only to have another payment for another car that I'll have to get rid of in three years.
CVTs in Hondas and Toyotas are far more reliable than the 6-speed auto in the Trax. History shows us this. The Trax is a very attractive and nicely packaged vehicle, but with that tiny turbo engine that uses a timing belt instead of a chain, I predict long-term reliability and ownership costs are going to be quite poor. GM Korea turbos tend to have a very short lifespan and they are EXPENSIVE to replace. I recommend spending a little more money and getting a Honda HRV, Toyota Corolla Cross, or even a Mitsubishi Outlander Sport. All have much better reputations. The Outlander Sport also has a fantastic 10yr/100k mile powertrain warranty.
@@s99614 The 6-speed auto in the Trax is a carryover from the first generation Chevy Cruze, which came out over a decade ago. It has a history of being problematic.
This Trax supposed to be simple and easy design but it looks very aggressive and supposed to be styling or luxury one. Plus little bigger as you look it from over 150 yard distance and may not be if you look it close by. Otherwise LT tirm is very perfect means push button start, nice rim, 17" radius tire, apple car play, android auto, no need sun roof which is good to keep price low, nice cloth seats, halogen lights nothing wrong and looks nice, but all I am saying should be regular like Chevy have sonic sedan, little high and at least 16 or 17 rim.
Heads up ALL TRAX HAVE COMMAND START - just need Chevy App which is free for first 2yrs (we fought with our dealership for a command start just to find out it has one built in)
Bought a New Chevy years ago...it was either the engine or transmission constantly going out. WOULD NEVER BUY ANOTHER CHEVY PRODUCT. I would walk first.
You warned us about the turbo. But this engine MIGHT also use WET BELT technology. A red flag bigger than the turbo. A cheap little Ford also uses it. Wet belt uses a rubber belt down inside the engine either for timing and/or to power the oil pump (where most engines have a chain that will out last the rest of the car). The belt runs in the engine oil (might require special oil). If it breaks it will either ruin the engine (timing belt) or quit powering the oil pump (if you shut it off quickly when the warning light comes you might save the engine). Or the belt can start shedding material which will plug up the oil intake thus starving the engine of lubrication. As it is deep in the engine it must be expensive to change $$$$$$$$$$$$ Sales people should warn shoppers of this feature. Or manufacturers should pay the expenses caused by this stupidity.
@@dannybryant6873 unfortunately it is up to a person to make the decision if it’s a great buy or not (I don’t sell them only review). For the price it’s a great lease or few years of a drive vehicle as some buyers will only keep a vehicle 2-3 years. Thanks for the detailed input.

If you put a review or post online, I would remove that as you are working with corp and they can just say sorry for your lose (I know from experience). Contact GMC North America and start a case, they should have given you a loaner vehicle and wait. Well my friend has a Honda Pilot, paid big money for it new, lots of bells and whistles, just off warranty the trans went out of it, cost big money to fix, so much for cvt plus took 3wks to a month to fix, I guess they hitched a ride to work. @@HawkeyeRides
You carried spare belts for the cvt? I doubt it... but if you did how were you planning to install the spares? smh.
Jeels he is talking about snowmobile trannies. Apparently you can pop a belt on one if you need to.
That's my point, you can't on a CVT, you just need lots of spare money floating around, now there are some who recommend changing the CVT oil every 50 or 60 thousand, just
more money to spend on it before it finally gives out.@@jeelsvealnerve1163
That is correct but the new engineering has made them better so you should be able to go around 100k or more without replacing.
That’s for your insight 🎉

Built in USA and not oversea etc.,
Those who don't understand practicality, keeping it simple and thus reliability don't know toyotas. It's no frills are for these reasons.
Toyota makes more vehicles in the states and employs more including suppliers than any other car company.
Congratulations with your Toyota they are nice vehicles 👍
It’s actually built in South Korean
@gordm5567 the Corolla cross suv is manufactured in Huntsville Alabama.
It's a new factory which has been building them since their US inception in 2019.
You were meaning the Trax I'm sure now.
Don't know much about those. GM moves their manufacturing around so much abroad and in US, never know where their from.
Consistency equals quality and all toyotas manufacturing is at same places thus much better quality.
I found the Corolla Cross to be too small for my six foot frame.
The Trax is made in Korea.
Thanks for sharing your insight

@@HawkeyeRides oh ok thanks for the reply.

@@NewJerseyJay thanks for sharing 👍
Congratulations and I agree
Small turbo charged engines work really hard, and need more frequent oil changes (at least every 6 months or 5000 miles with full-synthetic). Also it's a good practice to allow the engine to idle for a minute or two after arriving at your destination (especially if it was driven hard). This allows the very hot oil in the turbo to circulate through the system and cool down a bit before shutting the engine off.
@user-be8sq6dy5k Turbo engine need by factory Turbo timer.
You forgot the Equinox AWD that comes before the Blazer and Traverse.
No I just didn’t want to have so many different vehicles compared to one vehicle 👍
yeah and a blazer or traverse are entirely different vehicles that don't compete with this at all
So many cars out there have CVTs now.

You’re welcome and congratulations when you gets it
... so, what's the "one big problem"?? No AWD?
It’s with the pros and cons
I drove back and forth to work every day for 30 years, 80 miles total. Never had anything but rear wheel and snow tires. Not one single accident or mishap. My secret? Slow down and take your time in bad weather.
Good tip 👍
Hopefully easy and cheap to work on. I predict your going to see ALOT of these on the road for the price, making parts cheaper.
I agree
Saw a TH-cam video of the Trax that's sold in China and Korea.. has automatic tailgate opening feature, memory seats, power seats across most trim levels. Why do the send "watered down" versions to US. SMH.
@@tedrik1346 everything here cost more
Im glad they didn't go down the CVT rabbit hole with this car.
I agree that would be an excellent option 👍
I wouldn't touch one with those engines. I have heard they are nothing but nightmares

Thanks for your insight 👍
What do you expect for a $24K car? Of course you're getting a non-premium/high end quality.
Thanks for your comment Lilly, but that figure is for a stripped down model that doesn't appeal to a majority of buyers. For a few thousand more the Equanox is a better car to buy.
Great job, well done.
Thank you 👍
Trax was my second choice last August.
Thank you for sharing and congratulations

I would buy one if GM had a better warranty like Kia and Hyundai i just don't trust the quality of these cars.
The nice thing is it’s the least expensive so you can always trade in 3 years 😁👍
@@HawkeyeRides I'd rather pay for it and know it's going to last.
Thanks for the insight and it does have an awesome value but with any vehicle time will tell 👍
They haven't been making any of the vehicles you mentioned with the transmission mentioned long enough for long term reliability data.
@@s99614 The 6-speed auto in the Trax is a carryover from the first generation Chevy Cruze, which came out over a decade ago. It has a history of being problematic.

From what I've heard, most would-be buyers aren't too excited about that 3 cylinder engine. Might as well get a Trailblazer or Equinox.

Yep, put Equinoxes engine in this Trax and I'll run to you with cash in hand. But 1.2l 3cyl with timing belt set to fail is no-go.
3 cyl won't last...even the Bronco Sport has a 3cyl..no thanks
This Trax supposed to be simple and easy design but it looks very aggressive and supposed to be styling or luxury one. Plus little bigger as you look it from over 150 yard distance and may not be if you look it close by. Otherwise LT tirm is very perfect means push button start, nice rim, 17" radius tire, apple car play, android auto, no need sun roof which is good to keep price low, nice cloth seats, halogen lights nothing wrong and looks nice, but all I am saying should be regular like Chevy have sonic sedan, little high and at least 16 or 17 rim.

As it is deep in the engine it must be expensive to change $$$$$$$$$$$$
Sales people should warn shoppers of this feature.
