2024 Chevrolet Trax review // This one's a shocker. That price!

- This is a Motormouth couple car review of the all-new 2024 Chevrolet Trax subcompact suv. With a starting price of $24,530 CAD/$20,400 USD, the Chevrolet Trax is an affordable option. It’s not a powerhouse but it sure is a great daily driver with a 1.2L turbocharged 3-cylinder matched to a 6-speed automatic transmission, 137 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque. This is a FWD model but with a good set of winter tires, you may be just fine without AWD.
The Chevrolet Trax has grown, it’s 11” longer and 2” wider than the previous model and has 7.3” of ground clearance. It comes standard with LED headlamps, body coloured door handles, hidden exhaust tips, 17” wheels, available 18” and 19” wheels and a compact spare tire.
Standard features on the new 2024 Chevrolet Trax include an 8” touchscreen, 3.5” driver display, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, manual heated cloth front seats, a 4-speaker audio system, active noise cancellation, a manual liftgate and Chevrolet Safety Assist.
In the US, heated front seats are not standard, but are available in both the LS and LT packages.
The 1RS Chevrolet Trax adds the heated steering wheel, the LT has cloth and Evotex seats which is leatherette, a 6-speaker audio system, 11” touchscreen and 8” driver display. The Activ and 2RS models add a power driver’s seat and Evotex upholstery. Available features include, a sunroof and a wireless charger.
The 2024 Chevrolet Trax does not offer extra features like ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a power passenger seat, driver seat memory or a power tailgate. However, the price reflects that and all of these features are not typical in the subcompact class. The Kia Seltos is the only model that offers all of these features.
Chevrolet Trax fuel economy is 8.3L/100 km, 28 MPG city and 7.4L/100 km, 32 MPG highway
Here’s the pricing for all the other trims available, Chevrolet Trax 1RS $26,030 CAD/$22,100 USD
Chevrolet Trax LT $28,930 CAD/$22,300 USD, Chevrolet Trax Activ $31,030 CAD/$23,900 USD and Chevrolet Trax 2RS $31,030 CAD/$23,900 USD.
The Chevrolet Trax Activ model has a more contemporary look with 18” black wheels, a black grille with chrome accents and Activ badging. The interior is comfortable, spacious and clean with black leatherette upholstery, yellow accents, a power driver’s seat, heated front seats a heated steering wheel, a 6-speaker audio system, the larger 11” touchscreen with wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto and an 8” driver display.
The Chevrolet Trax is missing some features but the lower price point reflects that. It doesn’t offer a power tailgate, a power passenger seat, driver seat memory, ventilated front seats or heated rear seat. This is also a FWD model but with a good set of winter tires, you may find this is all you need.
This Chevrolet Trax is not a powerhouse but it’s a great city driver with a 1.2L turbocharged 3-cylinder matched to a 6-speed automatic transmission, 137 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque.

I dont like when vloggers always say it's a great first car for someone younger. It's a GREAT car for anyone!!! Im 54 and i love it!!!
Im mid 30s, and own this. Simple, just how I like it
I'm a Canuck living in Changwon, Korea where these are made. There was a lot of rejoicing when we got the contract to build these here! The Trax saved a lot of jobs here! Now, they can hardly keep up with demand! Good for Chevy!
Unfortunately the Spark had to be sacrificed to make the Trax. Since Spark was a much cheaper vehicle, I still prefer the Spark.
@braetonwilson4296 Yes, that was also made here in Changwon. So when they agreed to kill that off, a lot of people here were worried about their jobs.
I edited my comment. I meant to write that I prefer the Spark, not the Trax. You could buy a Spark for $10,000 USD cheaper than the Trax. Shame that new vehicles have become so expensive.
GM will do its best to keep non North Americans employed.
@@brenthill3241 Profit above all else is the American way!
How all of us survived for decades without AWD in northern climates is one of those mysteries that may never be solved.
Right?! The advent of front wheel drive, maybe?
Exactly - how did we do it ? I remember my first car was a used ford fairmont and my wife spun out on the icy roads and the seat belt mechanism didn’t work and she got a black eye - and cheek and for weeks people were looking at me in a strange way - I am sure they thought I was beating my wife. I thought we were in heaven when we got out brand new 1988 Toyota Corolla with front wheel drive. Now all my cars are 4 wheel drive except my new Z 4 but that’s a summer car.
I did pretty fine with my 2002 buick century for 7 years and only has fwd.
@@Hallowsaw Our family had an ‘89 Century, fwd of course, and in Eastern Ontario Canada, it ploughed through some heavy snowfalls!

Love the way you two always go deep into who/what the vehicle is designed for and compare them to the comparable vehicles at a similar price. Too many reviews focus on what a vehicle is lacking without considering the price. Thanks
Thank you so much!
They are the best.

I also enjoyed your video/review for a different reason. It's rare to see a married couple who actually enjoys each other's company - well done.
I love the way the base model looks but I would be willing to bet dollars to doughnuts that turbo charged 3 cylinder engine will not see 100k miles, maybe 150k.
Honestly, they should have made a top end 6 cylinder and now you're talking. One of the greatest vehicles I ever owned was a '94 Dark Cherry Red S-10 manual transmission.
@@johnlozauskas778 I mean its a chevy, to get 150k miles you should be very happy. To expect any more is crazy, especially with an engine with ANY Turbo charger.
My 24-year-old daughter bought one in June. She has the base trim. I’ve driven it and am impressed with the 3 cylinder turbo, although I do worry about durability. I think it rides great, the back seat room is amazing, and it looks like a baby Blazer. Another concern I have is that twice it has failed to shift into drive and the dealer claims there’s nothing wrong with it. Obviously there is, but it’s an intermittent thing. She paid a smidge over 23000 for it (US dollars). As far as the lack of AWD, it’s not a priority. I’ve lived in heavy snow states all my life and never have had AWD. Never been stuck in 48 years of driving. Tires and intelligent driving matters. Great review as always.
The 1.4 litre turbo 4 cylinder engine the old Trax had, wasn't a great engine. I had one in a Cruze and I'll say it like this: the long block was actually decent, but it had some really bad parts bolted to it that could distroy the long block. It took a lot of maintenance to keep that car healthy(mostly chasing leaks fortunately for me). But I sold the car with 320k kms to a coworker for his daughter. It still runs perfectly fine, doesn't burn any appreciable amount of oil, the valve lifters are noisy but that doesn't threaten the drivability. I've discovered that there are worse engines out there(ie Ford 1 litre ecoboost, why soak rubber belts in oil?)
I don't think the fact it's a 3 cylinder is a durability concern, the turbo is my point of concern. It could be this new engine is good and will silence critics, I will watch this car with interest and hope your daughter has a good experience with hers.
To my point about turbochargers, my current vehicle is a Toyota hybrid with an Atkinson cycle engine(which is almost the inverse of turbocharging).
Biggest thing with any turbocharged engine is frequent oil changes. Normally I stick with every 5k miles or even 7.5k but with a turbo I would actually stick to the 3k interval. I would also have the coolant changed every 30k. Those engines are tiny and have to work hard, they need TLC if you want it to last.
@@ghenry85Trax has rubber belt
@@saiikik2727 Dry belt: bit of a bummer. They ussually last as long as they are supposed to.

As always a top shelf review. The honda civic I purchased in 1994 had 125hp. I don't remember ever thinking it was a problem. I'm glad to see affordable options these days.
It is not a problem because of how light it is. This chevy trax is anything but light.
3100 pounds is pretty light these days even compact cars are around 3000
That was 30 years ago when those power numbers were normal for vast majority of vehicles. 125 hp does not cut it now.
@@janoycresnova9156 Or so you have been marketed to believe. Have you driven the Trax?
@@janoycresnova9156 I still have my mom's 1992 Ford Escort. 88 hp and it keeps up with insane Boston traffic just fine.
My 1982 Toyota Tercel had 62 horsepower. I survived. It also had non power steering. Best car I ever owned for 14 years.
I had one also and I could cruise the highway at 90 and get 45 mpg. Great car.
Great video guys! I got my LT Trax some months ago and I love it. I would totally recommend it to anyone looking for an affordable, safe and nice looking car.
Quick Correction: if I'm not mistaken, the power driverseat is available only on the Activ trim, not the 2RS or any other trim.
the 2RS got the larger tires & rims instead of a power driver's seat to keep the price the same as the Activ.
I bought my 2RS in August, have 3,000 miles and love it! I average 30 MPG with a high of 38 mpg! I got the Crimson red ;)
I’m still waiting to get mine I’m glad to

Yup. People hate on KIA but Korea has really stepped up quality.
lol… anything Japanese is far superior… well maybe not Nissan.
Andrea and Zach, I love you guys! Your reviews are so wonderful. You’re always so objective in your reviews; you always focus on the positive of every car you test. I think that is great. Too many pseudo-novice reviewers focus on all the negative because they think it makes them sound profound and it actually just makes them sound stupid and inexperienced. I love the looks of this new Trax, it’s all grown up, sporty as ever; I love it. The value per dollar is UNBELIEVABLE, EVERYTHING YOU GET FOR $24,0000., especially in this day and age where auto manufacturers are practically raping customers with sticker prices so inflated on EVERYTHING, it’s a wonder anyone can afford to a buy any new car at all! I actually love the looks of this Trax so much, I went to test drive one yesterday. I was shocked when I stepped on the accelerator pedal of this tiny 1.2 liter turbo 3 cylinder; WOWWW! It was quick; so torquey and punchy. This little 1.2 liter 3 cylinder turbo engine packs a punch. I had a blast driving it. I was also impressed with how roomy it was, 38.9 inches of rear leg room; great cargo capacity. This new Trax has grown so much larger opposed to the last generation, this new Trax looks like a midsize SUV, in comparison. Chevrolet really knocked this one right out of the park ! Great review , Andrea and Zach. I always look forward to your great reviews; excellent job, as always ! Best-Tim
Thanks so much for this honest review! Just picked this up for my daughter yesterday…LT model. You can’t beat the price and the tech! I first drove the 2023 trailblazer (2024 I’m sure is better but more expensive) and I liked the Trax much better…the cabin was much quieter. Very sporty & great value!!!
That's so great, congratulations, I think your daughter is really going to enjoy it.

A good set of winter tyres + fwd > all seasons + awd
In winter, ability to stop is super crucial
Yep and winter tires + awd is even better
Every car has four wheel braking, or all wheel braking if you will.

4WD or AWD does not help with braking.

Was looking at this vs the Soul. Ended up with the Soul based on a price break and the warranty. The Soul is also shorter so it's a bit better to park in the city. But I was impressed with Chevy's effort here.

Outstanding review (as usual). Love the winter tire suggestion with FWD, and the fact you both live in Canada and can attest to that is key.
Compared to a Corolla Cross, this is the vehicle to get. Toyota dealers will charge you way above MSRP if you can even find one. While the Toyota may be better, the back seat room is a joke and you'll be dealing with markups. Toyota dealerships have become the scum of the earth. I tried to buy a Sienna and couldn't believe what these dealers are doing. I don't care how "good" their vehicles are, I won't do business with criminals. What a crappy time we're living in that you feel like you got a good deal paying MSRP. This whole dealership model needs to die.
This post is totally right, victims of their success Toyota is becoming. Everything they sell its like Jeep markups. If we boycott them for awhile maybe they will give 8000$ in incentives like Jeep just did.
Yep, Corolla sedans actually 3 inches more rear legroom than Corolla Cross.
I wanted the corolla cross, but that CVT... Nope. I sacrificed horsepower, but I got a real transmission when I got my Trax.
Totally agree, Toyota is a ripoff post covid.

I like how GM has finally learned its lesson about 'badge engineering' and just putting a different symbol on the same vehicle. If I hadn't learned the Envista was the Buick version, I really wouldn't have known. The could have saved themselves all kinds of competition had they learned this 30 years ago
The vehicles you mentioned were designed in South Korea. The mindset is very different than 30 years ago. The old men would have totally laughed at the idea that their company could have been run by a woman and the vehicles would be made in Asia for import into North America.
@@michaels3003 Vehicles made overseas and imported as American brands aren't a new concept. They were doing that in the 80s and 90s. The entire Geo brand was Japanese cars rebranded by GM and Chrysler sold rebadged Mitsubishis. That color scheme is devastating 0:01. The Trax looks pretty good too, 😉 Another great review by Motormouth, as always. Crossover = modern station wagon. And there is nothing wrong with that.
CANNOT consider HRV at all. In Canada, you need to get the top trim for 40k+ to get basic functions like Blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert. Honda's pricing is just ridiculous.
For anyone concerned about the 3 cylinder engine I’m here to tell you it’s better then you think. My wife’s 3 cylinder Buick Encore GX surprises me every time I drive it. Its perfectly adequate. It’s not fun or sporty or impressive in anyway, but it’s completely fine. Its got plenty of torque to get you up to highway speeds in a hurry and for passing. I just ordered a 2025 2RS Trax last week. Should be here in about 4 months.
Would love to hear about this vs Hyundai Venue. Going to search that.
In regards to FWD versus AWD if you live in deep snow stick with AWD. I live in Alberta and for 5 years i drove a FWD Mini Cooper S. It is a chore some days to get from A to B with a FWD Car in winter even with good winter tires. I have driven Big Semis/motorcycles/SUV's and Pickup trucks and finally just went back to a F150 pick up truck this last week, 2016 sport model with the 2.7 V6 ecoboost with a 100K on it for the same price as this car is brand new. These little cars are great if you live in the right place like vancouver or the Island. But speaking from living in Alberta Canada for 28 years you should really have something with AWD/4WD and good winter tires. With the right combo you get thru winter with way less headaches.....
3 cylinder?
Yep, three BIG OLE CYLINDERS 🤣. BUT, what made me purchase mine, via trade in, was its peppyness. Its gots balls, no cap. Good on the highway! And for $23k dollars for the 1RS trim, great price!
I love this car! My husband is going to see what he can do to get his crazy old wife, haha, one of these!
I've said this before, Chevy's marketing department needs to rethink the name of this vehicle. With a name like "Trax," one would think, even assume that AWD is standard or an option. No thanks. Add AWD and up the engine a little and they would have a home run. This seems like an opportunity lost. Love your reviews.
08:24 I believe only the Activ has Auto Driver Seat. Not 2RS.
I am a huge fan of the car. I’m not sure that I would buy one, it’s a little smaller than the 2018 CR-V that I am currently driving. I live in Wisconsin where AWD is desirable but heck, I drove rear wheel drive for 25 years and survived. I find that suitable tires are more important than AWD.
I never liked purchasing US cars. They have improved in reliability, but I have bad memories of poor construction & rattles. I'll pass.
They should offer a hybrid version. Modify the Volt transmission amd battery pack, detune the engine somewhat, it will be a Toyota competitor.
Hopefully this 3 cylinder engine has lessons learned from the troubled 1.4 litre 4 cylinder. 3 cylinders can be reliable, small tractors have seen successful 3 cylinder engines for decades.
Got a 1RS for my 17 year old daughter, great vehicle
The Chevy Trax or the Subaru Crosstrek? Is the extra cost and AWD of the Subaru worth it?
I've always said that about GM. They get knocked for the same thing Toyota gets praised for and they are just as reliable. It's almost ridiculous how much journalist like to rag on GM and they are great vehicles

My family has owned 7 GM vehicles and only 1 was not in the shop a lot. Lease and return before the warranty runs out.
This Daewoo does look pretty great. As a GM division in Korea they have been making decent vehicles for the brand. I know the IQS from JD Power is high, but what about the longer term VDS JD Power survey that looks at problems per 100 vehicles after 3yrs of ownership? What's the track record there?
Chevy is top 5 on JD Power 3 year dependability and has had top marks for several years now.
@@Motormouth... marvey! Thanks and good video
Nelson is my lover and under my protection!
Great looking car but the 3 cylinder is a non starter for me. I can't even imagine how it will run after a few years and 50-60,000 miles on it.
It looks cute on the outside. I took one look on the inside and left the dealership. Cheapest plastic molded interior I have seen since the Chevette. The Nissan Kicks is a better option in this class and size combo. The only advantage the Trax has is the traditional transmission vs the CVT. Other than that, it is a no brainer and Chevy is not the winner.
I’ve never seen this but what size vehicle does it compare to ? RAV4? Audi q3? Cadillac xt4? Honda crv? Vw Taos ? 2023 all
It’s more in the HRV, Corollacross, crosstrek category
As always, I love your Reviews. Is Andrea getting better looking? Ok "Value" car, but, 4 Wheel / All Wheel Drive is NOT just about Snow. Front Wheel drive is just not good in pouring rain on the freeway, think CA and FLA; stick with All Wheel Drive, way more responsive in an emergency and keeping from being in an emergency. Thanks again.
Wonder how that Tubo reacts in cold weather.
Great video...Getting a car for my teenage son, this one seems appealing, but aside from the AWD, how does it compare to the Subaru Crosstrek, I know you like that car, still the better choice? and does the Chevy have the adaptive cruise on the lower levels like the Subi?
My opinion not Motormouth: Crosstrek is a lot better off roading, you get AWD and 1 inch better ground clearance and I think the infotainment is bigger. I have heard its really stupid and hard to use though. Cheapest CT is 25.5k USD and cheapest Trax like 20.5K USD. Also I would go with used Crosstrek if you want to go that way and used Trax is a terrible idea, they updated it 2024 for a reason. If someone would give you a 2022 Crosstrek Crosstrek for saving money and potentially looks, a lot of people think Ctrek is girly or too angular. If money is no object 24 Crosstrek Wilderness looks dope af
@@Ruddline I’m looking at a new base Crosstrek so it has the two small screens, this Chevy looks bigger and my son is a tall 6ft 5
Bang for the buck?
@@leeandrews1072My son is 6ft2 and has more headroom in my kids' Nissan Kicks than in my Grand Caravan. Another decently priced subcompact cross, and no turbo charger. In case you wanted something similar to also check on.
@@dschmidt1140 another good consideration thank you!
I like the price, I gotta that I don't like the fact the water pump is unprotected under the vehicle.
I was in the market for a Blazer (or maybe an equinox) but holy cow, the price point on this is pretty crazy for what you get. I learned it is made in Korea and now it all makes sense…no UAW to contend with over there!
Activ & 2RS are the same price. The Activ trim gets the power drivers seat, the 2RS doesn't get a power driver seat likely due to the larger tires & wheels.
Would the Trax be a better comparison to the Hyundai Venue, rather than the Kona?
Hi. Love your car reviews! Have been a great help to me. But there is one thing I love more. Andrea, I love your boot outfits!! Looks like you are wearing white knee high boots under your jeans, here. Can you give a girl some advice on how to do the knee high boots under jeans look? Thanks so much, and keep on with your videos.
When it snows in Vancouver it's slippery as goose poop. If the Trax can handle that with good tires it can handle anything.
I have one about two weeks ago and I love it
The big question marks are the wet belts used inside this engine. This is a variation of the PSA 1.2 from Europe that had major issues with poor piston rings and fragmenting belts that clogged the oil pickup and trashed the engine. Unless Chevy did a lot of work correcting these issues, I would not buy one until longevity is confirmed. Lease one for 3 years if you must, but do not touch one as a used vehicle.
You left out the most comparable comparison, the Nissan Kicks and chose "competitors" that cost far, far more. A loaded Corolla Cross is going to be @ $13,000 more ($38,000 vs $25,000). The Trax is going to kill the Kicks (an excellent subcompact by the way). It offers a lot more for even less money.
When I first saw the 2024 Trax I thought they had definitely benchmarked a Kicks, size wise anyway. We got a Kicks in 2022 for my kids. Glad it has a NA engine in the Kicks, and hopefully the lower HP will be a decent pairing for the CVT. I do like that the Trax has a 6spd automatic, the turbo engine, not so much. The Kicks has full standard safety features.
@@dschmidt1140 The Kicks is great (bought a 2018 S for a friend) but the Trax is just a lot more for the money and better looking. A top trim is $1000s less. Don't know why you would be concerned about the turbo engine.
oooohhhh - gosh something like this might get me out of a sedan as it has the budget factor working for it. I agree FWD - height is more important than AWD - snow it is all about not being lifted up off the pavement - it should be just fine in my case - sedan in deep snow I get very worried AND when it gets to like -35 that darn snow turns into like a rock so you can easily have it dent the side running boards and fenders if you get out of the ruts (coming out of a lane, I could not figure out how to do the turn as the side cuts in - it was like rock sounds - off the ground makes all the difference in not being "concerned" and it still gets good mpg (height often works against that).
