  • Late July and early August 2012. For the first time since 1993, Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society's Lima Berkshire 2-8-4 Nickel Plate Road steam locomotive number 765 returned to the mountain state of West Virginia to pull Norfolk Southern employee appreciation excursions on the former N&W rails of the Pocahontas Division. From 1986 to 1993, 765 was the power for Collis P. Huntington's yearly New River Train and during it's final year on the New River Train, 765 was dressed as C&O Kanawha 2765 as the NRT operates on former C&O tracks. The last steam engine to operate on a mainline excursion in West Virginia was MILW 261 on the New River Train in 1994.
    On July 31, 2012, 765 is seen crossing the massive N&W bridge as it crosses the border from Ohio into WV across the Ohio River and enters the mountain state for the first time in nearly 20 years. Then on August 3, 765 is seen pulling employee appreciation excursions around the Williamson area.
    A big thank you to Norfolk Southern for allowing steam engines to run on the high iron again and for bringing back 765 to WV. My hope is that this year's steam excursions and beyond will be successful no matter what.
    Please like and enjoy. For best viewing experience, please watch in high definition.

    Awesome!!.... Sprigg is where I grew up, just east of Williamson, close to Matewan. The green hills are even more beautiful and glorious than I remember them. In my time there, 1940's, early 50's coal was king and the mighty Steam Locomotive pulling hundreds of loaded coal-cars a common sight to behold.... Your video takes me home again.... I thank you mightily... Take care, keep up the good work... and God bless...West By God Virginia.

    Love this train, and was lucky enough to work as a medic on it a bunch of times on the Collis P. Huntington trips.

    Karleen Kanoa They used an N&W hooter from a scraped N&W Y on these runs as a tribute to the heritage of the rails it was running on, former N&W rails.

    Glad to see that the 765 returned to West Virginia. At least for one time. Maybe NS will let her out in that territory again. It's certainly cool to see steam on the Pocahontas Division. Seeing how both 611 and 1218 are out of commission. With 611 undergoing her rebuild, and 1218 on display. Looks like that area hasn't seen steam for a while, also seeing how CSX doesn't allow steam on the New River Train. I wish 765 could get to WV more often. But, one can only hope.

      I was hoping it would come this fall but unfortunately that didn't happen. Who knows. The 611 will definitely come to the area but I wouldn't rule out the possibility of 765 coming back.

      I would do anything to catch steam in your neck of the woods. The countryside looks beautiful compared to the steam giants roaring through the Alleghenies.

    How difficult would it be to restore N&W 1218? Seeing as a couple beasts are being restored right now (the C&O Allegheny and the UP Big Boy) it would be cool to see another join their ranks.

      According to a 611 crew member I have spoken to, all of the parts of 1218 are still at the Virginia Museum of Transportation but others have also said that not all of the parts are there as supposedly some of the parts were "lost" in transit on NS in a boxcar.
      Complete parts or not, the main issue is that it was in the middle of a rebuild when NS ceased the first steam program in 1994 so it would be quite an undertaking to get it operational again.

    Hi this is ayden from the durbin rocket. I really wish the nkp 765 will do the new river train.

      I wish it would return to the New River Train as well. However, with CSX's current CEO, Hunter Harrison, it won't happen as long as he is there as he killed Canadian Pacific's steam program when he was their CEO.

    when she came over that bridge I heard a N&W class a whistle

    • @appalachianrails
      @appalachianrails  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's actually a whistle from a scrapped N&W Y.

    • @armagonarmagon3980
      @armagonarmagon3980 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The N&W used the same 12-inch single-chime "hooter" whistle on all of their freight locomotives, so there is no difference between an A and a Y whistle. Personally, it is my favorite whistle of all time.

    • @appalachianrails
      @appalachianrails  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Armagon Armagon Okay but I'm just telling you that the whistle they used was actually traced back to a specific N&W Y.
