  • Thundering down Norfolk Southern's Pocahontas Division, the Nickel Plate Berkshire #765 makes a fine sight leading an almost matched consist of stainless steel passenger cars on a NS Employee Appreciation Special. We see the flawless Berk passing set after set of vintage N&W Position Lights not long for this world. We get roll-by's in and around WIlliamson, DeLorme, Blackberry City, emerging from Mingo Tunnel, Chattaroy, and Goodman, WV, along with a roll-by of Norfolk Southern's Savannah & Atlanta Heritage Unit #1065 leading loaded coal train 578 by the N&W signals at Chattaroy.
I hope you have all enjoyed the footage and look for more of the same very soon!

Wasn't a fan of the hooter whistle until I finally heard it in person a couple days after this. Eerie, loud, and beautiful

Why does the whistle sound almost the same as N&W 1218's whistle

They need to take that hooter off, it really dose not suit 765 that good

Did they put an N&W whistle on it for this run? Sounds just like 1218.

Yep. It was off one of the scrapped Y-class engines.

Tri-Cities Railfan I love it! :) It's too bad they had to add a diesel, but at least it was one of the heritage units.

It reminds me of when 1218 was running and the coal train in the 50s. There's archival footage on U Tube of Y and A pulling freight in the 50s. You can hear the same whistle.

The converted baggage car behind the tool car is HEP. The NS diesel is for emergency backup and dynamic braking.

It seems to me that the Engineer was a little nervous about blowing the whistle, if it was me, I would have been pulling the Cord like I was at the Controls of N&W #1218

This is a N&W hooter whistle. Her regular whistle is still on her, this was just a guest whistle. They put it on because the 765 was traveling on former N&W tracks. Similar to #1218's whistle
