    My favorite Berk and my favorite NS Heritage SD70ACe! Nice! And I feel bad for 765, the rails were too slippery.

    That was a fantastic video, I forgot what a steam train sounded like, as we don't have any running in Perth Western Australia, they stopped a long time ago, there is 1 steam train that runs in winter for tourism, The Hotham valley Tourist Railway, the steam Ranger, runs from May to October. thanks again for the video, Regards Gary

    Thanks for sharing this great video. Lima ''Super Power'' Berkshire 2-8-4's were the last word in steam locomotives. They pulled a Fast Freight on the Nickel Plate Railroad called ''The Flying Saucer'' back in the day.

    It's all good until the sand runs out :) Good thing they had a big bucket of it.
    Great catch. I'm amazed the old girl can still pull that many cars.

    The NS (Norfolk Southern) MOW (maintenance-of-way) employee was supposed to grease the inside of the rail. He made an honest mistake and greased the entire rail, including the ball (top) of the rail, so that's why she slipped. Any locomotive would have slipped under those conditions. She pulled 35 car passenger trains in the New River Gorge, with lots of curvature and long up-hill grades were very common, and had no trouble. And she did all this before she had her major rebuild in 2003-2005. Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society is the best!

      @ad356 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Matt Schoder this reminds me of a cartoon i used to watch as a kid, it was call "the critic" in one episode he said he greased the track so the train would run smoother, it was meant as a joke. its just kind of funny because someone jerk actually did that real life

      Humm the MOW employee was probably just told to go out and grease the rails. He was probably a Redbird and didn't know any better.

    Hi Rob (got it right this time), hope you and yours are all well. Loved watching this video, you dont realise especially this side of the pond how big your diesel locomotives are, fantastic shot at the beginning with the people by the side of the track, gives you perspective. They are truly massive and make ours look very small. Loved the wheel slip part, surprised it couldn't drop sand itself onto the tracks as our old steam locos can or was it not working?
    So why do you still call your site Stephen Bennett as its your site surely hence why I got confused, thought you might have the same as your boy like I do with mine. My step son is in the RAF and also I am a veteran, ARMY real fighting man LOL.
    Enjoying your videos immensely Rob, whilst working on kit bashing my local engine shed which no longer exists, great fun.
    Regards Chris

    time to get out the sand hard and heavy, the reason they grease the rail I was told by an old guy that worked over on the maintanance for csx in ohio back in the day from 77 to 98 the reason was that it helps on tight turns not to mess up the wheels when a train is going by, you dont do the top of the rail unless its a test rail or so I have heard about from back in the day.

    Methinks the staff riding the engine should have gotten down a lot sooner with the bucket brigade and walked back farther along the curve. Replacing worn locomotive tires is not cost-effective, and it cuts the service life of the steel tires.
    The train was too damn heavy. Two water tenders, a baggage coach, about 10 heavy loads of coal plus a front end shovel in a gondola, 19 passenger coaches with a couple heavyweight coaches included and a tool car on the rear. 765 was struggling even out on the relatively straight mainline.

    at 7:05 "you doofus" is my friend dan, who wanted a better shot, accidentally kicking my camera, and me, rudely telling him to watch out for my camera. this is why my camera is so close to the base of the crossing- to avoid incidents like this, but oh well. I wouldn't mind if he didn't kick my camera. hes is normally careless when in this kinds of situations. thank heavens for video editor. :P

  • @joe-ut7ee

    Probably three things were the problem, they run out of sand, the rails were to smooth or the people on that train were to heavy.

    The amazing power of steam!!! THEY ARE NOT OBSOLETE, they were just kicked out because they weren't given the chance. do like the Grand Canyon Railway and run it on biodegradable chips. Or heck better yet have a look at what The Coalition For Sustainable Rail is proposing. That would give the stupid EPA and their bloody Tier 4 emissions a run any day.
