FYI: He wasn't imitating a didgeridou. He was imitating a Jaws Harp. Similar sound but more of a resonant twang than a growl.

In the American south, we call that starting sound a mouth /jaw harp. I love how they use the pronunciation of vowels and many exaggerated consonants give the song a very deep south feel. Very true to the song.
The “didjeridu” sounds more like a jaw-harp to me. (I’ve played both, and the jaw harp would be a more appropriate instrument in this context.) Great song choice!

Dear Julia, since you mentioned Tim Foust the Bass singer and Avi Kaplan the Bass from Pentatonix PLEASE react to Home Free Ring Of Fire Featuring Avi Kaplan and be aware that the final LOOOOWWWWWW note is done by Tim. Home Free has also done a number of songs from their individual homes since the virus started including a COMICAL song titled Quarantine that is about dealing with things because of the virus. Their beatboxer is Adam Rupp who does a drum solo but when he stands up he isn't finished. 🎶👱♀️👗👠👠💓

The Jews Harp was Adam Chance. The beat boxer is Adam Rupp. (Also the "harmonica" and I say that because it's his voice). The first singer is Austin Brown, and he's awesome.....in fact, all of them are incredible. The bass is Tim Foust, and has a 5 octave range, which is ridiculous. There isn't a "mediocre" person in the group. They're all superstars, and together are hard to resist.

I've watched a few vocal coaches reacting to this group now. The female coaches all make the "sexy digging it face" when Tim hits the first dramatic bass notes. It is inevitable. Hits them right in the feels. Not gonna lie, I probably make the same face. LOL

Peter and Tim recently also did Fire and Rain (James Taylor cover) but yeah, Misty Mountains. You'll also enjoy End of the Road and well, pretty much everything else. Welcome to the Wonderful World of Home Free. Oh, Adam Rupp, the beat boxer, is a multiple time world champion beat boxer. Tim (bass guy) has a 5 octave range, Chance (the guy who did the diggerydoo type sound) has a 4 octave range, the 2 others are Rob (guy with the big bushy beard who did the hibberty part, 2nd lead I think is what you called him) and Austin (who is actually normally a high tenor). They have many "live performance" video's that are also on youtube.
To give you a hint of how good they are after performing in Australia, going back to the USA for a show in the mid west then in New York they caught the red eye to perform, on demand, for Diana Ross's 65th birthday (at her request, she's a fan). Their original music (not just covers) are pretty amazing and they won season 4 of the "Sing Off" (same show Pentatonix won in another season). Oh for a Christmas song "Do You Hear What I Hear" will floor you (Adam Rupp did the arrangement on this one). The group originally had Chris Rupp (Adam's brother) instead of Adam Chance (normally just called Chance) but he left for more of a solo and different genre (sort of) effort.
People suggest “ring of fire” don’t get me wrong, they did awesome on their version but being a “Cash” fan it’s very hard for me to like it as much as some of their other songs. Tim also has a

The "digerydoo sound" that you are talking about it meant to be a "jews harp" which is more appropriate for the Deep South (in the US) scene. That is being done by the baritone in the group, Chance (Adam Chance) ...the beatboxer is doing the drums and harmonica (Adam Rupp)

@Gabriel Marques Chance CAN do bass, and does at times when Tim is carrying another part of the song, (has filled the bass slot with a different group) however, he mostly covers the baritone slot for Home Free, as Tim is such a deep bass. Most folks refer to Chance as the group's baritone.

I call this a “family” arrangement because all the guys add their own special talents into this song to make it a more complete listening experience. Austin is awesome rolling his “r’s” and that little yodel kicked in for good measure. Rob accompanies him on those great high notes. Adam, a very good, experienced vocal impressionist, which I personally think is a few steps higher than a beat boxer, continues to amaze and thrill me. Tom, with that deep, dark, growly G3 (I may be off here), always blows my mind and turns my knees to jelly...always🤦♀️. Great overall idea for this 1913 song; costumes are right on - maybe a jug or two or a Blue Tick hound, but I’m from TN🧡

That yodel you keep hearing is very standard in USA Southern music. It's one of the things that really stand out from other sections of the USA vocal wise and let's you know you're "in the Deep South, Sugar."

That sound you're calling a didgeridoo is actually a much smaller instrument called a mouth harp. Commonly used in Bluegrass music.

Welcome to the rabbit hole that is Home Free.
Home Free is known as a Country acapella band but, they can perform any genre of music. Their original music has mostly a country flavor but they have performances that cross over and blur genres.
"Country Fried Pop Medley" takes several pop songs, mixes them together and adds a Country twist.
"The Butt's Remix" takes a number of songs from different genres (Country, R&B, Rap, Classic Rock) and mixes them together
Tim's is the Bass, try Ring of Fire w/Avi Kaplan or the live versions of Your Man or Honey I'm Good to hear examples of some of his low notes.
Chance, the one doing the Jaw Harp, is the Baritone and can also sing bass. Try Mayday (he has a bass lead), In the Blood (he sings bass line when Tim sings lead) or Go Rest High on that Mountain (helps carry bass line while Tim is singing tenor).
Austin, the first lead in this song, is the High Tenor, songs that feature him are Mayday, Bring Him Home (From Les Miserables) or Wake Me Up.
Rob, the second lead in this song, is the Lead Tenor. The End of the Road, 9 to 5 and Colder Weather are songs that feature him.
Adam is the beat boxer. When he isn't beat boxing, he fills in from baritone up into tenor one. There are several videos that showcase his beat box drum solos.
Up until 2016, Chris was the Baritone in the group. Chris is Adam's brother and he and Adam started the group in 2000. Chris is in Country Fried Medley, the Butts Remix and Ring of Fire.

Actually, you MUST see/hear them live. My wife is a vocal teacher and the first time she heard them live she said "they can't do that!" They have the most outstanding ability to blend with each other even when their instruments are strained from the rigors of touring. Oh, and they own the stage and are great people as well!
This is one of the best songs I've ever heard... And definitely the best of Home Free. Every single note is perfect. Their work is just beyond any word...
I went to one of their concerts once years ago, and I’m still as addicted as ever.
One great thing about home free is there isn't *a* lead singer. They basically take turns singing lead. One will be the main feature for a couple videos then they'll switch. The beatboxer never sings lead, but I'm given to understand he's actually shy about straight up singing. He sings background in a few of their songs but I'm given to understand it took a lot of coaxing to get him to do it. If you want to hear more of the first lead's yodel, he full on yodels in their cover of 'Thank God I'ma Country Boy'

There are three acapella groups I follow: Pentatonix, Home Free & Voiceplay. All you need is a Voiceplay reaction and you've covered all of them. Moana medley is a good place to start, or the Oogie Boogie song if you want to see the Bass take lead. (and drop a surprising last note!)
Home Free became much better known after wining season 4 of the sing-off. (PTX won season 3) You're sure to get a lot of recommendations to react to Home Free's cover of 'Ring of Fire'. This was a big hit in the sing off and you can find video's of that performance as well as a video they made with Avi Kaplan of PTX. You'll probably have many recommendations for both so here's a suggestion, do both back to back! The song is short and this way you can compare live vs. studio.
There are many great Home Free songs to choose from but I'd like to suggest 'Butts Remix'. This is a much more lighthearted tune, but it's a really clever arrangement that spans multiple genres: country, pop, rock, rap... Their acapella rendition of some tech heavy dance club music is impressive. Also, their antics are sure to make you laugh.
Wonder what you opinion on Van Canto is and their acapella take on metal.
Voiceplay's Oogie Boogie's song for sure. That last note.
When it comes to voiceplay's bass taking the lead, he also covered "Bare necessities" on his channel.

@@enigma1326 Yes, that's another great one. A few other Voiceplay picks: 'I knew you where trouble' or 'Talk dirty'. And one that's a few years old but an incredible arrangement that combines about 2 dozen songs, 'A crimpella'.
I was completely blown away when I heard this arrangement, Fell in love with the group immediately.
They’re a lot of fun to see live! (Saw them at the Alaska state fair one year). They’re all awesome. I’d like to say the bass comes through just as well live. You could feel the vibrations through the floor!

High notes evoke emotions, but low notes evoke primal instinct. So, being able to carry very low notes = increased attractiveness.

Having seen them live I can promise you that they are this clean live as well as in production. This song is fabulous live as Austin, the main lead does a vocal harmonica duet with Adam (the beatboxer). Austin also has a fantastic yodel that he has shown in a couple of other songs, All About That Bass and Country Boy. Tim, the Bass can go even lower than what you hear in this song. He has a 5+ octave range and is truly an exceptional talent.
Rob, the second lead and Chance the baritone both have exceptional voices and shine on the songs the lead on. Home Free is addicting and never disappoint.

Fun Fact: Tim (the bass) actually hit a note so low he broke a speaker at a live performance.
That sound isn't a Didgeridoo it is a Mouth Harp which is used is used old Country Music as well as Bluegrass. Their Accents are all similar cuz they are from the South in the U.S.!
Actually, Rob (beard, coveralls) and Adam (beatboxer) are from Minnesota! So NOT the south! 😁

The group is based out of Minnesota where it started. Adam Rupp and Chris Rupp started this group in Mankato, added Rob Lundquist from the twin cities area, looked and found Tim Foust online, then Austin Brown they met in a cruise ship. Chris left the group in 2016, and they added Adam Chance.

Yep, Tim actually has a subsonic quality to his voice that's been commented on more than once. "Normal" ears can feel the sound but not hear it. Elephants and the wretched bass speakers on some of my neighbors cars have this too.

Growing up in West Africa as it once was called, a world traveler by any name, and a person who enjoys music of many different genres - I also thought the opening sound was a didgeridoo which is a sound I love. My first “Jew or Jews Harps” were made in Republique du Niger, and in Nigeria. The Ozark experts commenting before me make sense, and no worries. I learn much more from you in how you break down the performances than many others - thank you!
The last guy is actually doing a "mouth harp" known around the local they are singing from..

What's not to like here, all top notch singers with exquisite complimentary changing rolls. It's a wow in every way. What I especially absolutely love is that they don't over do their delicacies. For too many years, most talented vocalists have crammed every feature they have In to their expression like it was a contest of tricks. It takes away from any chance they have of emoting a connection with the listener. It's impressive from a physically technical stand point. but it doesn't touch you. Love these guys !

Home Free won the Sing Off the season after Pentatonix won.
As to the bass (Tim Foust), he has blown out speakers in concert, and to be honest, you haven't heard anything yet. Tim has a 5 octave range. Chance, who does the bass line when Tim is doing something else has a 4 octave range.
OK, so you will be getting a lot of requests for a cover they did of 'Mayday' by CAM. While that is hands down one of my favorite songs they've done, you should not react to it just yet. You see they pull a surprise in that video that you won't catch unless you know who does what in the group. I suggest you watch at least a couple more of their videos before doing 'Mayday'. I recomend 'Die A Happy Man' and maybe 'In The Blood'
Those two songs you suggested solidify Chance as the bass, however, as well as Mayday. I would lean more towards songs like Think A Little Less, Down to the Honkytonk, or The Gambler.

I'm not sure the sound they're trying to replicate is a didgeridoo, I think it might be a mouth harp.
yes,,it was a mouth harp (jews harp, juice harp, khomus, so many names...lol), sound, as that is a musical instrument used in many traditional folk bluegrass songs

The two tenors: the first is from Georgia in the southern US. He's leaning hard on the natural southern accent. The second is from the upper Midwest of the US. There is a very different basic accent underlying to his country man voice.
The bass is from South Texas, another distinct accent he is leaning into.
Excellent point. Absolutely correct. And the harmony of those to someone from the FL-GA line (me) is incredible. I agree wholeheartedly.
Just remember that telling that to an Australian, your sentence just sounded like an Englishman trying to tell you there is a difference between the accents of someone from London, Wolverhampton, and Nottingham. :D

I think that no matter where they are from originally, they are leaning into a more nasal Appalachian sound as is appropriate for this bluegrass song.
One way they get that "extra bass" sound is Adam Chance, who joined the group after Chris Rupp departed. He's technically a baritone, but is capable of very, very low notes. So he can take over the bassline when Tim is singing, but also adds another layer of bass/baritone other times. Oh, and he's also the one making the mouth harp sounds. :)

So I have learned :) I haven't heard a jaw harp before and didgeridoo was the closest sound-wise that I've heard before.

I had always heard it called a mouth harp. Looks like a weird turning fork with 3 prongs.
Tim has a voice that could hit the core of this planet. I’ve never heard a voice with that much bass till I heard this fine group. These men embody talent to an extreme.
He's only a bass-baritone unlike some (including myself) who can get at least half a scale lower 😎. 👽

I was going to add the same comment - for and amazing arrangement, listen to “Do You Hear What I Hear”. Nice low notes in that one too! “Can’t Stop The Feeling” breaks down the parts well. “Blue Ain’t Your Color” and “My Church” and “Women Amen/Female” are all good choices. The are and amazingly talented group

We've seen Home Free twice. They are seriously good and so fun to see live. Adam's beatbox solo in the concerts are just insane. And when Tim showcases his low notes live, it actually hurts your chest because it's so low. Words don't do it justice, it's a must experience.

We were lucky enough to see Home Free in concert about a year ago and they are even more impressive live. We were sitting near the back of the theatre and we could feel the air from the bass.
The bass, Tim, comes through live just how you are hearing it here. I've been thrice. He's something extra.

Stunning, and I cannot believe I didn't find out about them until today! I don't see a reaction from you yet for them "Wolf Totem", "Wuve Wuve Wu", or the one from the Star Wars game are all equally enchanting for a first watch into this remarkable band,

@@shawnski001 The Jaw Harp, also known as a Jew's Harp. I'd recommend the Estonian band Trad.Attack! if you like that sound -- their songs Must madu, Lell'o, and Reied feature that instrument.
I am a solid Home Fry ever since discovering them a few months ago. I, too, absolutely LOVE Wolf Totem by Hu .... but I have to admit I don't care much for other songs they've done. The first time I ever heard Wolf Totem it didn't have the translation running with it, and I had to hunt down the translation -- because I just KNEW it was a 'fight' song!!
