    Gordon, I liked the video. At least you have the balls to take on that project and show everybody that it can be done. mistakes or not, you got the job done. I have older trucks and tractors with split rims and I work on the wheels by myself. Commonsense and a little ingenuity wins most of the time. Thanks.

      Thanks Joe, that was my first video for TH-cam after I heard I can get paid for doing this. My way is not always the politically correct way but it works for me and has been for nearly 40 years since I went to school to be a mechanic and did that work full time for about 10 or 15 years before getting into other work ( truck driving and welding) I do all kinds of repair work and depend on TH-cam to get me through anything that is new to me or different. Thanks for watching

    We pry tires on and off like that at my work too. We've found the stiffest tires like that are Goodyear, Michelin, and Double Coin. They often fight us.
    Part of what made it harder for you though is that old rim with the 5 access holes. They have a tighter tolerance in the bead area then the 2 hole Budd wheels. Notice the right angle right at the bead area of the rim, then look at the smooth curved bead area of the newer rim on your rear drive axle.
    Of course, me calling them the old style may just be my own nomenclature as they are still out there, just not real common.
    FWIW I like to put a dab of anti-seize on the studs before putting the nuts back on.
    Thanks for sharing! I discovered your channel today and am enjoying your videos. Always a pleasure to learn from someone that knows how to work on their own stuff.

    Try a flap wheel on your grinder instead of a rock. They polish as they cut so you get a smooth surface for better seal and no stress raisers. I weld and quit buying rocks years ago.

    When you're popping off the second bead! Turn the bars the other way (nose down) No matter how stiff they are, they grip the rim! they'll pop right off!

      I've noticed you've been commenting on a lot of my videos lately Larry and I appreciate that. You can see some details on my YT success on the "about" page. I'm not sure I know what being sponsored would be or entail, I don't have time for new videos now and won't have for a long time until after all this remodeling and construction is done around here, I just do a quick video once in a while for now.

    I change a ton of truck tires, and you did a fine job, I want to suggest you get a flat bar, it helps a lot with the stiff tires. A 14 ply 17.5 could not be changed without a flat bar, or I couldn't do it at least.

      usually not too bad, that was an unusually stiff tire and it was cold that day. I'll be doing a couple tires soon, they should go on easy. Thanks Sam.

    on the first bead you just took a little too big of a bite that's all. you would not have struggled if you didn't try to pry so much of the tire at once. then you were bouncing the tire with the wrong end of the bar. the end of the bar with a spoon is what you want. the welded tip stop is for that. you cleaned up the rim with a grinder? you should have been using a wire wheel on that grinder. right angle type. then you can clean the valve area-beads and mounting surface.

    You are a strong man if you can remove a lorry tyre single handed, I was just waiting for that other leaver to spring or bounce off and strike your goolies, that would have been really funny! All truck drivers should do as part of their driving test qualifications.😜

    • @57bagre
      @57bagre  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It takes long enough to get qualified to drive a lorry, if they had to learn to be a mechanic as well most of them would never finish training. Thanks for watching.

    IF YOU ARE GOING TO USE THAT END OF THE TIRE BAR YOU NEED TO GET OTC 5735-35K KICK START BAR IT WORKS GREAT!!!!

      I'll have a look at it, but probably won't buy it because I only do 5-10 tires a year at home. I'm a driver not a full time mechanic. Thanks for the info.

    Next time, if its just the valve stem, you don't need to pop the whole tire off. Unless it's a super single, you can just pop the bead with the stem facing you, and push down on the tire with your knee and get the valve stem out that way. Just don't drop the stem into the tire!!!

    I watch your video. Very helpful you can get an angle grinder at harbor freight and wire wheels and it would help the rust clean up a lot faster with little to no effort. Be safe trucking fellow driver.

  • @nameremoved4010
    @nameremoved4010 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That is a ugly rim. And your technique for tire removal was somewhat crude but it is as good as mine. I'll comment later again, I suspect with experience. Gloves are a good idea. And we missed the remount which is as important. Also lube and more lube. There is a step over method that is pretty sweet. And yes it helps to be a large lardly for this job or maybe 76 inches tall plus muscle mass. I see you didn't use a cheetah/tire seater. Watch those videos guys as well.
