  • This video footage was captured by ATS Euromaster to show the catastrophic effects of inflating a truck tyre which has previously suffered run-flat damage. It forms part of an internal training DVD being used to reinforce the safe methods of operation which must be followed with all truck, earthmover and agricultural tyres. The footage also serves as a timely reminder of why tyres should be serviced by professional tyre technicians. www.atseuromaster.co.uk/busine...

    yesterday i was in a tire workshop and a guy was inflating a truck tire, like the one in the video, when i turned around i heard a loud blast, i came to see the guy knocked back at least 2 meters and his leg was all broken, i could see his tibia bone out of his leg and he was in shock, later the people around took him to a hospital... but it was crazy, there was a lot of blood and that how i got here , didn't know how dangerous a tire could be... careful everyone and sorry for bad english

    I worked for ATS in Beverley Yorkshire, UK for over 5 years. I achieved my City and Guilds Certification with them and I worked on anything from 400x8 wheelbarrow tyres upto solids and 48.5x45 Earthmover tyres. We NEVER had any form of accident at the Beverley Depot because we all knew the risks involved. We did have tyre explosions yes, but never an injury. I myself had a 48 inch Agricultural Tyre fail during inflation but because I used a safety cage and the correct procedures, I was not injured apart from a little temporary deafness due to the sound of the explosion. Safe work practices save lives. NEVER take risks , It's not worth the extra seconds you might gain.

      You were lucky, I had a 295/80x22.5 Conti go bang @80psi in the depot and while on site a split rim 750x16 on a Tuffnells trailer let go, both of which were being inflated in safety cages at the time they went off and each one resulted in painfull ruptured eardrums, instant deafness is not something I'd wish any fitter to experience.

    I've had this happen to me, the sound is like water from the bead set, and unlike the video there was no appearance of the wall starting to rip. It exploaded right after I rolled it up on a rack. Pushed every tire down the rack and blew all the insulation off the wall. I lost my hearing and just watched the insulation fall like large flakes of snow and was extremely surprised.

    My dads hand got crushed about 20 years ago when a rim seal ring went flying from exploded tire of an older truck. New trucks rims are one piece, older trucks rims were in 3 pieces. Those who know understand what Im talking about. My dad is doing great today, doctors were able to put his hand together! Thank God!

    I was overtaking a semi truck last year on the highway, when the side wall of one of his tires blew, literally, right beside us. From the corner of my eye, I saw the gasses escaping beside the passenger window. Thankfully there was no damage, but my mother, who was quietly reading a book, almost jumped through the roof of the car.

    I worked as a Commercial/HGV Tyre Fitter for ATS at Bexley Heath in the Summer of 1976. Conscious of the dangers of compressed air, I always tried to follow safe procedure by putting the tyre in the cage when actioning tyre inflation. The branch manager had other ideas. Many times I was pressured not to bother with the cage and often felt quite intimidated and threatened when I tried to follow safety procedure. I felt sufficiently intimidated that I didn't dare go against his orders. Things came to a head one day when I was trying to remove a fork lift tyre and the pressure was on me to get the job done quickly, In desperation I tried blowing the bead off after the locking ring and flange was removed. The inflation pressure shot up to 100 psi and the tyre flew off and I was blown backward. My works mates heard the blast and came rushing round to see if I was ok, I was shaken but ok. The branch manager had a guilty but unconcerned look on his face. I resigned next day. I should have reported my concerns to ATS but felt to afraid to do so.

    These Super Singles are the most dangerous of all tyres - got frightened to death by one blowing up at work.
    10-15 years ago we used to change these tyres without any safety protection or anything out in the open air.

    I was pulling a fully loaded flatbed trailer down I-10 near Luling, Tx on a sweltering summer day. There was a Mustang following a little too close with another big truck behind him. My left inside tandem blew and snapped off the mudflap. I saw the mudflap sail over the car like a magic carpet. I got onto the CB and told the truck driver following him, "I swear I saw that Mustang driver's eyes pop out of his head." I pulled over and checked it out. There was nothing left but the sidewalls. Never follow too close to a semi. I lost 3 recaps that summer. We kept telling corporate that the company doing the recapping were doing a crappy job. They finally listened to us and stopped buying from that company. No more problems after that.

    You guys didn't even get the tip of ice burg. I had a drive tire blow at 85 M.P.H. It took off 1/2 of the front of my trailer and all of the air lines and hoses. Plus warped the frame rails for the flooring of the flat bed trailer. I've seen them go through windshields of nearby cars too. And there's more.

    My step father used to be a School Bus Contractor in Howard County MD, which he owned 45 Buses, and one day a Buss came in that had a flat on the inter rear tire, which they pulled off in put air in, well, I was outside of the Garage and was walking by the tire and I heard it making a popping noise, so I told that the tire was making a popping noise and they should not go out there near it because it sounds like it's going to explode. So then my step father told me to go out and let the air out of the tire, I said I'm not going out there near that tire, so I walked up to the garage door window and was looking at the tire, I heard my step father say, God damn it, I'll do it then, and all of a sudden I seen my Uncle go up to the tire and he started letting the air out it, I turned away a second and all of a sudden I heard a loud explosion and then a loud bang against the aluminum garage door, a when I turned my head back around to look out the garage door window come and see my uncle standing out near the tire anymore, so I walked outside the garage door and noticed him laying on the ground in front of the door, which he was knocked backwards against the door knocking him unconscious. The tire had exploded knocking him backwards into the garage door, and the force of the explosion was so great that it threw him backwards and putting a big dent into the aluminum door which he was knocked unconscious. he was unconscious from 12 o'clock that afternoon until 7 o'clock at night. The explosion had caused him to bite his tongue and had knocked out one or two of his teeth, which was blood was coming from his mouth, so at first we weren't sure if he had internal bleeding or not, so we had to call an ambulance to come get him, but he wound up having to go in shock trauma medevac. School Bus tires are about the same size as a Tractor tire.

      Late boss of mine had that happen to him. Blew his ball cap off his head and behind the filthy shop refrigerator. After he returned from the hospital with his right forearm in a cast, he searched unsuccessfully for his old, greasy hat. Pissed. He couldn't find it. I found one and put a tack through the top, put the hat on a broom handle and tacked it above the tire machine on the ceiling. "Phil! I found your hat!" He came scampering out of the office and said: "Where"" I pointed to the ceiling and said: "Up there!" He looked and said" That's not my fucking hat, asshole!" His son and I laughed so hard we almost pissed ourselves! What a classic "Phil" moment from Eagle Point Garage in Eagle Point, Oregon, circa 1988.

    Do you know what wind speed the 12 tonnes of force releases?
    I am conducting a test next week of a tyre this size releasing pressure 120psi and I'm looking at trying to measure the force exerted at the point of failure as well as 2 and 5 meters away. I thought wind speed would be the easiest way to measure this but am not sure on what the range would be. Eg. 0 to 150km/hr or 0 to 250km/hr.

    I work as a mechanic and one thing i hate about tires is: On the sidewall it will tell you " never exceed 44PSI when mounting the tire on the rim "
    half of the time on low profile tires, i am at 90-100PSI for the tire to seat the rim, all scared and sweating and shit, hoping it won't explode. Literally twice the pressure. How do they expect the tire to seat onto the rim with only 44PSI, when it barely seats with 80PSI

    If you ever see a big truck tire explode, it is very forceful. Usually can be heard a long ways away. Of the ones I have heard, it sounds like a shotgun going off. There are videos on youtube catching tire explosions on big trucks. One rips off the trailer bumper and hurls it across the interstate.

    • @sweeptheleg.
      @sweeptheleg. 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      dontaskme Behind them isn't a problem as blowouts usually happen through the tirewall but, you should avoid driving next to them regardless of the season and especially on the highway traveling at higher speeds. If a blowout occurs on the steer tires, they're going to lose control of that truck and you don't want to be next to them when that happens. @@midlanismail416Gus went to Casa Tranquila to torment Hector on a regular basis, if Hector was sent to talk to the DEA, Walter knew Gus would stop by to visit him to either kill/harass him. Sure enough, after Hector returned from his visit to the DEA Gus and his men flocked to Casa Tranquila giving Walter the perfect opportunity to rig Hector’s wheelchair with a bomb/microphone. Once gus showed up and was about to kill Hector, Hector gave the signal and Walter detonated the bomb Killing Gus, Hector and Tyrus, no more gus, Walter wins the face off!

    You can actually work out the stored energy in a tyre and compare it to an explosive. Definitely enough to kill you.

    i always thought that it was the "shrapnel that injured or killed people, but i guess it's the sudden release of air pressure.

    • @NikitaDarkstar
      @NikitaDarkstar 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      mjt11860 It can be both. We lost a guy at one shop to a pressure gauge that was blown of an exploding tire and went straight through his skull. Tire cage didn't help cause it was so small. Another guy a year or so later got knocked on his ass and broke his arm.

      @mjt11860 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      NikitaDarkstar man that's brutal. another way a truck tire can kill is when it comes loose while the truck is rolling down the freeway. from now on, i'll b even more careful around them. thanx 4 the info.

    • @NikitaDarkstar
      @NikitaDarkstar 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      mjt11860
      That's usually a good idea anyway, more often than not drivers don't even know they have a tire going flat if it's on the trailer, it's too far back to be heard, and with 2 tires on each side of the axle they don't really feel it either. But really, hanging out around trucks is just an overall bad idea no matter what. They got blindspots big enough for you to completely disappear in, they got a brake distance of a football field if going highway speeds, and needless to say you will lose if they come over on you. Either hang back far enough that you can see the trucks mirrors (then, in general the driver can see that you're behind him), or pass and move on. Keeps you safe from tires blowing out, and from the truck in general. (Really the things don't get nearly the respect they deserve on the roads...)

    • @mjt11860
      @mjt11860 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      NikitaDarkstar true. i know cuz my dad was a long haul trucker. he claimed that long haul truckers were the best drivers on the road.

      Honestly, I'm inclined to believe him, those things aren't easy to drive, and the shit you can get into if you're involved in anything if you have a CDL? Yhea, you better be good. Even if mechanics are prone to calling drivers all sorts of names from time to time... But safest drivers on the road? Oh yhea, I'll give them that any day. Just the laws of physics makes me not like the idea of hanging out around them, that's all. :p

    There is a video of a guy knifing a big rig tire. The force of the air is so great it blows him around backwards and he lands on his face 5 feet away. Oh yeah. It also strips his shirt off him like magic. One second he is wearing a shirt. Next second he is face down and shirtless.
