Dean Ween of Ween | Guitar Moves Interview
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 12 ธ.ค. 2023
- Went out to New Hope, Pennsylvania to hang out with Sweeney’s high school-era friend Dean Ween (né Michael Melchiondo, Jr), who co-founded avant-stoner royalty act Ween back in 1984. Ween ripped way harder than anyone else while remaining the gnarliest most dangerously playful band of all time. Matt Sweeney set up shop in Dean's sweltering shed to learn some timeless lessons about the guitar, including why it's better to wear it above or below your genitals.
Featuring the premiere of Mickey’s summer jam, "Dickey Betts."
Original Air Date: June 25, 2013
Matt Sweeney, host of Guitar Moves, is an NYC based producer (Joanna Sternberg “I’ve Got Me”) and composer (Superwolves, Chavez, Red Dead Redemption 2). His guitar playing can be heard on records by Adele, Johnny Cash, Endless Boogie, Neil Diamond, Cat Stevens, The Desert Sessions, Iggy Pop, Tinariwen.

I tell everyone about this video to this day. Those who care and those who dont alike. Im glad its officially back.
good to be back!
Brooo I didn’t know she was ever gone no way
@@guitar-moveslet’s get another one with deen!!
It might be the best video on youtube
What happened to it I didn't even know it went anywhere. User to watch it all the time.
Let’s bring back the best comment from the old video. “It’s a really good thing we can’t smell through the screen.” this shack is wicked. Love this sesh
I'll never forget the one that went like "at 12:41 you can see the drugs start kicking in"
@@luancervantes6124 love that
smells brown in there
RIP Dickie Betts. I've been jamming on some of his tunes since I heard, but I'd be lying if I said this video wasn't the first thing that popped in my head.
Same here…and here we are. RIP.
@@rolandmunchow6168 Just saw the news of DB's passing on a random music site, I read the headline, skipped the obit, and headed straight over here to watch this vid for the gazillionth time 🤠
Same!
What Allman / Betts tune is this that they're jamming on?
@@theo484 It's a song Dean wrote called 'Dickey Betts'.
I met a dude in prison and he had a ween tattoo. He wrote down a bunch of the lyrics which I loved and would try to sing them for me because he loved ween so much. When I got out I bought chocolate and cheese and that really changed music for me. I hope that dude is doing well.
Did you get bummed while in prison?
This sounds like my experience a couple months ago, but I'm the dude with the Ween tattoo.
You write well for an ex-con, did you get your GED while you were in there?
lol @@RaymondGinn1978
I wouldnt be surprised if his Name is Aaron... I know a guy by that name that's a huge ween fan and also has been to prison on a few occasions..
you know it smell crazy in there
Lots of sweating
Coke lol
Definitely seems like some coke was done before filming this
I remember watching this when I was thirteen and trying to play leads for the first time. I'm 23 now and still suck. Thanks for uploading these man.
I missed out on this when it was originally around. I had to piece together over time all the nuggets of wisdom that I could've gotten in just one video!
Yeah no worries I’ve been watching this a long time
Basically same age as you. So good to see these again! And hope you’re doing good dude.
Same man i watched this when i was like 15, now im 24 and in a band. The only thing I learned from this video was maj7 chords lol.
@@BigStinky69 Haha fuck yeah
I think everyone of the Ween fandom knows what you're doing here and appreciates you putting Dean right after Keith. I mean it makes sense
I have never seen Deaner touch his nose that many times. Going for the Guinness World Record.
@@danielstoddart 😂
This is so old
@@Empty_Eeyore But totally gold
Putting Dean right after Keith?
it amazes me how little known he is on guitar. hes one of the best
Its sad but most greats are relatively unknown. The invitational hosted by deaner is fucking incredible and has Micheal Hampton of funkadelic sitting in some nights
It's actually amazing how much ground you can cover just by learning Blue Sky and Maggot Brain. The major and the minor, both tunes full of tons of moves to choose from.
This video changed my life 10 years ago. I’m still unpacking it today
This video is how I found ween
Chocolate and Cheese is one of the greatest albums of all time in my eyes. This interview rocks.
When I heard the news, the first thing came to my mind was this interview. RIP Dickey Betts.
“If you’re gonna miss, miss big” that is coincidentally both my philosophy to playing guitar and making sweet love
This series is so legendary. Was super bummed when it vanished and always wondered what happened but happy to the reupload under Sweeney. Rad 🤘
It’s good to have it home
Revisiting this episode is like going back to the town you grew up in 20 years later. I still play some licks from this episode when noodling.
yes. the greatest episode of music/guitar related content ever put out on youtube
Watch the Josh Homme one too.
Most underrated guitarist ever
I'm not a guitarist but I watched this video so many times before and now I'm going to watch it so many times again. It's so life-giving to see two people enjoying music and each other's company so much
This episode is the reason I began listening to Ween when I first saw it. Something about that chaotic Deaner face in the thumbnail…thanks a lot Matt!
Mickey is a fucking god. Finally got to see ween a couple of years ago. He blew my socks off. I don't know how he plays hunched to the floor like that
The sweatiest youtube video of all time. Glad to see it back!
2nd sweatiest
Blue Sky and Maggot Brain scales are my favorite music theory
Still to this day I occasionally think about that “below the dick or above the dick but never covers the dick” joke, I actually did say that to my girlfriend now wife as joke when we started dating and she asked me to play for her (I suck btw) .I remember watching this video many times over and over trying to understand what they were saying as I had just started learning english. Good old times.
The first Dean Ween solo album kicks ass. Starts off with Dickey Betts. I saw Dean solo live on tour and his entire solo band is full of great players. One of the best concerts I've been to.
Saw the Dean Ween Group in Bozeman in 2018, a month after seeing Ween in Red Rocks. Deaner plays with heart and hits all the right notes.
Dean has some of most legendary guitar faces
this is my favorite of all Guitar Moves videos. I wish it went on for an hour or 4. I'm not a musician, but as a fan of you both, it was so great to see how you communicated with each other and took us along for the ride. Of all the Ween shows I went to, be it tripping balls or sober... over the years, to actually see how skilled & brilliant Mickey is in conversation, compared to the skilled goofy tripped out stage persona of "Dean Ween". I love you both even more
The greatest TH-cam video of all time makes it’s glorious return!!!!
9:39 “anything that’s tasty is a taster” ❤
This is just my favorite interview ever.
This is genuinely one of the most insightful and inspiring videos on the guitar I've ever seen. Glad to see it back!
Best 13 minute rock guitar lesson you'll ever get. And best of all, it's totally free.
This is what guitar playing is all about. Camaraderie, jams, fun, authentic grit. Blue Sky and Maggot Brain.
Hey Matt! If you're reading this, I'm pumped that you're bringing Guitar Moves back. When I saw that almost all of the videos got deleted, I thought that was tragic. I was searching for the Blake Mills edition (please bring that one back-it's one of the best episodes IMO) and saw that some Russian dude had ripped a low quality copy with overdubbing. Please, please keep doing episodes if you can-this series has so much potential. I can think of so many guitarists that would be great for this show.
Great to see the single most important video on the internet is finally back.
A true epic!
Had been looking around for Guitar Moves, so stoked its back!!
So glad this is back up again. Great vid
So so so happy to have this back! Excited to see more from you, love the recaps, and hope to hear tons of more stories!
So happy to see these coming back.
Thank you for the reupload!!!!!! Greatest guitar moves ep
Absolutely love these lessons from the legends out there. Thanks Dean & Matt💘
greatest episode ever is back! love to see it
So joyfull to watch 😃 And it's good to see the re-upload of these videos again. You're great Matt Sweeney🙂
I love coming back to this episode a lot. You can see the delight and fun in the intro jam with these two, it's amazing
It’s back! I love rewatching this jam sesh
So glad this is back on youtube. I searched for it the other day and could not find it! It deserves to be seen!
Thanks again for bringing this episodes back. Love how genuine and crazy at the same time they are. Just like sitting with your guitar buddies. Best stuff on TH-cam, thanks Matt!
I missed this video. Glad its back!
So happy this popped back up. What. A legendary video.
Man, thank you for re-uploading, I love this show. Can’t wait for new episodes. Would be really cool to see the James Williamson one again, too.
Best series ever! Hello from Lansdale Pa!!
love these, Matt- keep em coming
The definitive episode of this awesome series! Glad it’s back.
This and the video of Dean teaching Freedom of 76 are my favorite TH-cam videos
one of the finest of all videos
this is the video that inspired me to pick up the goddamn guitar and fucking play it, for real, not just dick about for riffs.
that was about three years ago and I've gotten so much mileage from the lessons of Deaner and Ween ever since.
thank you so much for putting it back up and thank you for introducing me to Ween and Deaner's solo material!
Man I used to look everywhere for this video!
It got to the point someone on TH-cam had to re uploaded it. Lol
I’m glad this video is back.
One of my favourite videos on the internet, glad it's back ! The shack is my happy place.
I had a friend put me on to this video and Ween a couple of years ago, this video has become a bit of a happy space for me
Thanks for bringing it back
seen this video more times than I can count, so pumped to see ween this august, thanks a ton mr. sweeney for bringing this back and letting the world see just how tasty a taster can get
the coolest interview channel in life...i mean look that!...its so nice to see that music dudes.
Man I was just randomly thinking of this video earlier tonight, and how much of a ripper that first 2 minutes of the video is, and here it is reposted just the day before. You guys are just genuinely two dudes happy to fuck around and jam, this video is a perfect example of that
One of my favorite channels and guitar dudes is back on the Tube! Hell yeah! Today is a glorious day!
My fav Guitar Moves ep!
Modest dude
I can't explain the joy I have because of Guitar Moves coming back!
SO GLAD THIS IS BACK ON TH-cam!!!!
HELL YES I thought this was lost forever
Someone else reuploaded it but censored it which is dumb.
Guitar moves with Deaner is finally back, oh how you’ve been missed!! 😭🙏
Growth is me not fully understanding this when it first came out and completely understanding it now.
Cannot over state how happy I am the show is back!
Just 2 guys , relaxing, bumming cigs, and jamming out. All while couped up in the shack... this is what i aspire to be in life
One for the algo.. so happy these are back
The humor is what makes music so much better!
I only play bluegrass, but ive always thought that you were maybe the best musical journalist and interviewer ever. So glad you're back
love this one! Up there with the J Mascis episode :) appreciate what you are doing. These interviews are very important to me
Where’s the J Mascis episode?
Love this! Love the almond bros style jam at the beginning! For the longest time I only played minor pentatonic and did not know the major pent and how to get those happy / southern rock vibes. It's super cool when you can mix the two like clapton and many others. Love this series, can't wait to see some new ones!
Easily my favorite Guitar Moves video
This video introduced me to ween, the Allman brothers band, and maggot brain all one in video about 6 years ago. Wild
Hell yeah, so glad you’re bringing this back. By far one of my favorite series. Would love to see you go deep with Will Oldham regarding some of the Superwolves writing process,
and Emmett Kelly. And maybe Robby Krieger and/or Mike Campbell :) Great job 👍🏼
Great series. This one is one of the highlights. So many practical lessons for the novice. All you need to know to start a band: Barre cords, miss big, throw in some tasters, off you go.
Deaner's sweltering shed
Classic episode! Hoping to see either the Josh Homme one or Lemmy one
Every year I’ve been playing guitar I return to this video and learn something new. Boognish provides.
Little did you know,
at the C&C album release party, my uncle was at attendance, and he said they had a fondu machine with one side cheese, (CHEDDAR), and one side chocolate! They took acid, and Dean almost choked on his fondu.
The more you know.
but little did you know, i knew this because your uncle told this story in the super secret text thread that we're both in with all your family except you
@rocketsalad I just talked to dean ween you're full of shit
@rocketsalad I just talked to my uncle and the boog (mike) you're full of shit
Dude, just reading the description there and had no idea you worked on red dead!, I have red dead 2 open right now robbing a shack with sean, so cool to know that both of my favourite things have collided red dead and ween! fuck yeah
I’m so glad this became it’s own TH-cam channel ❤🎉
FINALLY ITS BACK ❤
Hoorah it's finally up again!!!
Single greatest video on TH-cam.
@4:57 THANK YOU FOR REPOSTING!
This is great stuff!
The chord that Matt rips at 4:23 is the heaviest thing I've ever heard
Dudes literally rock
Sweet. Love me some Ween, just changed the course of my evening
I've been ripping off deaner's solo from the intro for 5 years now. Thanks for teaching me the "happy" scale
I listened to maggot brain for the first time because of this video
I think about Jimmy Page being the brownest guitar player ever most days. So glad you're back!
i am so fucking happy that GM is back and on its own channel.
Beautiful.
I'd love to hear a browned out version of Isn't she lovely
Love it man
It's baaaaack! Often in life, you don't know how much you miss something until it's gone.
