J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. | Guitar Moves Interview

- J Mascis-who’s fronted Dinosaur Jr. since the band’s 1984 inception and has directed the group through brilliant 11 studio albums-has made a musical world of towering mountains of feedback and distortion and deep valleys of aching melody. His use of the guitar as both a weapon and a hook machine has been the blueprint the past three decades of alternative rock, and his violent use of effects pedals is the stuff of countless gearheads' wet dreams. That sound of technical skills seamlessly blended with equal parts unhinged noise and heart breaking hooks set up the commercial success of bands like Nirvana and the Pixies. In this episode of Guitar Moves, Matt Sweeney has a action packed hang with the guitar wizard-who’s traditionally not super talkative in interviews-and Mascis shines light on the origins of his guitar playing, Dinosaur Jr.’s influential sound, and gives an up close look at some of his favorite guitar moves.
Original air date: November 28, 2017
Matt Sweeney, host of Guitar Moves, is an NYC based producer (Joanna Sternberg “I’ve Got Me”) and composer (Superwolves, Chavez, Red Dead Redemption 2). His guitar playing can be heard on records by Adele, Johnny Cash, Endless Boogie, Neil Diamond, Cat Stevens, The Desert Sessions, Iggy Pop, Tinariwen.

Matt, you succeeded with this interview. I have been a Dinosaur Jr fan since "You're Living All Over Me", but I have NEVER heard J Mascis talk this much and how relaxed he is here. No monosyllables, no one word replies. This is great.
He got J to smile and laugh. Mind blown!!!
Exactly what I thought! Well said!
Yeah J has definitely opened up as he's gotten older which is great.
I know he went to highschool with Dean Ween
Dinosaur JR still sounds incredible! We saw them last week at the Stone Pony and it was amazing, it was the loudest show we’ve ever experienced. Lou Barlow was handing out handfuls of ear plugs to people up front 😂
J admitting that he sings just to get to the solos is a beautiful moment.
This is more words than J has spoken in his entire life
You gotta love that J put purple tape over the rhythm switch to lock it down on his own signature guitar!
That '80s period of Dinosaur Jr/Sonic Youth/My Bloody Valentine was truly golden and still highly influential.
When they talked about the whammy bar I thought of Kevin Shields! Cheers
Kevin copped a lot from J
@@pacu9 and Thurston. Hell, those first two MBV records are SY tributes. It wasn't until Loveless that they finally formed their own sound.
My Bloody Valentine discovered their sound on their EPs prior to Loveless…
@@pacu9and vice versa J has said that loveless was an influence
This is the most comfortable and relaxed I’ve ever seen J. He must love hanging with Mr. Matt. ✌🏻🖤🐺
Everyone seems to love hanging out with Matt
The thing I love about Guitar Moves is how much he looks like he’s enjoying playing with these guitarists. He looks as stoked as I would be to play with J
For real! It cracks me up every time he's SO STOKED!! I love it!
The only guitar solo that could make me cry
God The Lung at the end. I am actually crying man jesus christ what a beautiful song
This one and the Dean Ween one are gems. Finally saw Dinosaur Jr. live a couple years ago. It was LOUD!
Love Matt’s smile when J plays. The love and respect is beautiful to watch ❤
J is easily in my top 10 guitarists. No one could sound like him if they tried.
With all due respect and credit to what he does, I feel like he’s such a great guitar player because he isn’t that hyper practiced technical guy. He’s like the king of rough guitar playing. I feel I’m not alone in going to hear him every time practicing guitar starts to suck. You realize quickly, maybe this dude is proof that you don’t need to be super athletic as a player, just super tasteful and true to yourself
@@honeygun1554 i agree. a lot of the beauty of art comes from imperfection. If a painter could paint something perfectly then it might as well just be a photograph.
@@honeygun1554 he is still pretty impressive technically (Sludgefeast end solo) but he only uses it when it's absolutely necessary
@@silverlink8805I agree - look at his soloing on the studio "live" studio version of I Don't Wanna Go There
Guitar moves still exists? Why did the algorithm stop showing me
Apparently it got wiped off the internet or something similar to it. It’s all either back or coming back. Thankful that it is because this is one of my favorite J interviews ever.
That solo at the end got me good.
I will watch every rerelease of this shit. Honestly, this series has been one of the best things I've found on the web.
I'm really glad that someone is taking the trouble to reupload these 'old' gems.
These episodes were super interesting and fun to watch!
I don't know exactly know what happened with the Vice editorial team, but long live whoever decided to bring this series back to life! Guitar's NOT dead, folks.
I've rewatched this many times from the older versions, and like many others have said it's just so cool to see J as expressive as he is here. And the ending, with them playing The Lung, just gets me. So freaking great.
I've never seen J so garrulous in an interview before. It was so cool to see him smiling and laughing! What I'd really love to know is, how did he learn to find his way around the fretboard so fluidly? As wild and hairy as his leads are, he always seems to land on the right notes. Doesn't strike me as a music theory guy, so I'd love to know how he does it.
Would like to know the same but he probably just plays a lot and just has some things memorized and coming to him like second nature.
learning the fretboard takes a month if you stick with it
@@FilipPandrc teach me your ways!
My absolute hero, wouldn't be playing guitar without him.
How does Matt know all of these artists? Played on Malkmus record, live with GBV, Iggy Pop. Someone should interview Matt. 🤷
Was thinking the exact same thing
He was in a band too. His entre however is being a rich kid insider. They will not admit this of course. It’s the only explanation. J does not shoot the shit with regular people who are fans.
Unlike Ron Asheton, you could call Ron at his mom’s, he would talk to you.
Of course J got to hang with Ron & learn the stooge way of playing all those songs, this was because Ron was a cool person. J Mascis tells Murph what to play. Do u think Ron told Scott what to do?
J also has a person in charge of managing his legacy. This is the main reason you see dino jr in it’s original line up. J knows original line ups are the real sh!t
he was in Chavez for a long time and they were a fairly well known indie band (and they're fucking awesome)@@crypttonite. Where do you get this rich kid crap from? Even if true, it doesn't diminish the fact that he is a great musician in his own right. Also played on the ric rubin johnny cash records as a session guitar player. Doesn't matter if you're rich or not if you can't play.
@@gwar37 no shit he was in chavez etc, his entre into the scene is his class not his ability.
it’s why he has this guitar moves thing. There’s a gazillion dudes who can play guitar. Regular class folks are not interviewing Keith Richards or J.
chavez not on my list of good, dino jr not that great either.
@@crypttonite sure bud. how's that chip on your shoulder taste? salty?
The last part is so groovy when they play together - awesome solo
J. is straight-up effervescent in this one.
So glad this is back up!!!
YES. Thanks for uploading this
I almost cry at the end. Didn't know about this episode, thanks a lot
Great Show, glad you're back!
During the pandemic, my girlfriend got me the last available J Mascis Jazzmaster in Europe, and I'm still not worthy...And 1 & a half years ago, I stood right in front of J - for my birthday - and got my ears blown to the bottom of my soul - and tears were flowing down my face -- then the moshpit kicked me into reality - where tears mixed with sweat, until no one could tell the difference. Eternal love! - Another most beautiful video, Matt!
Great job! Thank you for getting him to talk.
so much love and respect in this video, great job Matt
Really happy about Guitar Moves returning Matt, great episode as always. J seemed like he had as much fun as you did.
This is a joyous chat.. I had a shit day and this fixed everything. Thanks so much for these interviews. ❤
Amazing. I’ve been a Dinosaur Jr fan for over 30 years, but never even heard J speak until now. Hands down, one of my favourite guitarists.
Love this. Great to see you with J, Matt. And now I understand the progression from Rory Gallagher to Brian May to J Mascis. I loved Dinosaur from when they were playing as Dinosaur in the Boston scene before they had to change to "Junior."
J’s acoustic solo stuff is really good too.
thanks for the reupload
I could listen to J solo all day. Such a cool melodic style, like he's just having a conversation with someone. That's a musician!
I love the way you do these interviews
Awesome! Around 12:58 when J casually throws in half of the intro riff to Sonic Reducer as an example of palm muting but they never talk about is exactly why I love these Matt Sweeney sit downs. It's a friendly chat between guitar/music nerds who have great taste :)
Hahaha Dead Boys!
Best show on youtube hands down.
"There's no resistance" is such a good way to put it. I always felt that way but couldn't have said it better.
Wish this was longer
Glad to see Matt back! An episode with John Reis or Justin Trosper would be a dream come true
Great interview! Loved how much you got J to open up. Awesome dude and I love hearing him speak 😂
I searched for this video a week ago, hyped to see it today
Finally !!! Great job Matt. My ultimate guitar hero.
I thought this was going to be a new one, bit bummed its just a reupload but I forgot how chill this interview was lol. Love J, hes unintentionally hilarious
Glad this returned for a third time!!
I've never seen J so relaxed and talkative in an interview! He looks like he's actually having a good time haha
hell yeah! keep em coming
Hi Matt. I know you from Zwan, which I still enjoy, so thank you for your contributions there. These interviews are cool. Rock on sir.
Love the song Ammaring. J Mascis and the Fog is where it’s at. Perfect album.
So cool man. Don't think I've ever seen J Mascis that candid or unguarded. He's still one of my guitar idols along with the great Doug Martsch
Guitar moves is back!!!
Matt you looked absolutely overjoyed at the end of that solo, as was I. Was beautiful. Take care ☮️
"Sometimes J doesn't talk. Maybe this time he will." - I think he was pretty comfortable with you. Most of us have seen interviews where he transports out of the room and comes back in time to give a one word response. Refreshing - great job.
Great cool interview. Mascis is a bad ass guitarist. Solid.
why was this show ever cancelled...every episode is great.
The OG.
Hey Matt, if you ever do more of these it would be crazy good to see an episode with Adrianne and Buck of Big Thief, such crazy unique playing
How I love J.! And his voice, of course!
Very cool... saw them at bunrattys in Boston(Allston) in the late 80's ... J was tuning up and somebody yells, " why bother?"
Was at that show. Face melter
I thought I subscribed to this channel years ago...wtf...great show, Matt!!
“J Mascis is God”-Spin Magazine.
From DNSR JR to oldschool Heroin era
Iggy & the stooges..& for the love of playing.
Great interview Matt.Cheers Legends.
Great stuff! I would love to see you do episodes with John Reis (Drive Like Jehu, Hot Snakes, Rocket from the Crypt among others) and Isaiah Mitchell from Earthless. Both incredible and interesting. I’ve been buds with John for a long time. Sat and strummed guitars with him once and he’s one of the loudest players I’ve ever heard acoustically and his right hand is fierce! Otherwise, very cool to see this series up and running and kicking ass, dude!
@2:22 “i House sat Kim & Thurston’s apartment”
Too fucking cool yooo
🙏👁🙏
Raddest interview ive ever watched. Wow. So. Damn. Cool
Saw Dinosaur Jr in a small club in the late 90's. Can confirm it was loud as goddamn fuck.
Is this series back? Guitar moves has always been one of my favorite. People need to stop sleeping on Sweeney! He's on Tasmanian Pain Coaster! He produced WE SING OF ONLY BLOOD OR LOVE!!! Viagra Boys? Run the Jewels?!?!? Man has that drip
J MACIS IS ONE OF OUR BIGGEST INFLUENCES IN OUR BAND .............HE IS AMAZING
It's back!
When Jay is interested, he's a really good interview
This is great how open and fun j is having. I've been a fan a long time, the last 4 or 5 years I've been going to dino shows, i know not a lot to some but seen them 7 or 8 times now. I really wish they would change up the set list a little and maybe add what evers cool with me. Some reason they never play it.
J is so great
This one's great, Matt. Please give us Gene Ween episode in 2024
Well done. I love J. I tried talking to him at after a tiny show and he is a quiet dude for sure. You gotta ask him about drumming for GG Allin and record it next time you see him.
Wonderfull solo in the end by J.
Well J, I do really love your voice too
So when are we going to get the episode where Matt shows us his guitar moves?
I always come for the end
I need that leroy troy interview back
I love how Matt asks J what key the lung is in and J has no idea so he starts playing the chords.
Loved him in The Double, btw.
So sick
Is this a re-upload? I’ve definitely seen this before. One of my favorite guitar interviews.
We got the rights back! Thanks for watching and more soon!
@@guitar-movesneed Doug Martsch guitar moves like I need air
J and the Dino Jr are the best thing that happen to skateboarding 😅 JK I know these guys through skate video Mind Field and after 15 years or more I still listen to J Masics and the band. Love the performance at KEPX with Forget the Swamp solo!!
J laughing and smiling!
The first models of the Squire Mascis JM's are wickedly good.... Beyond that? Best is past.
Nobody sounds like J Mascis. Crazy bends. 🎸🤌
The lung…gives me chills…every time.
THE GOAT
Does the Jazzmaster whammy stay in tune well? Im assuming it does the way he uses it all the time. That is what has kept me away from whammy bars is the maintenance involved.
Almost Ready is my favorite song by JR
This is great show, but when do we get new episodes?
Being filmed now!
This is SO fucking great. 🤘
Matt deserves a fuckin Daytime Emmy for this...
Saw him many times at Whelan's in Dublin...
Everyone should listen to more Greg Sage.
The tap!!!
Love that this show is back! Check out Boogie Chitz podcast
Don’t make fun of me - I reached for my Bigsby while playing slide today during band practice.
