  • The Presidential Guard, also known as Evzones or Tsoliades, is a ceremonial infantry battalion that guards the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Athens, Greece, as well as in the past the X Royal Palace which has become the Presidential Mansion.
The Evzones uniform is a symbol of Greece's nationalistic pride, commemorating major battles from the country's contemporary history. It takes months to manufacture with painstaking attention to detail. The formal version of the uniform is white, and it is worn on Sundays and at official events, with a doulama or tunic, which is khaki in the summer and navy blue in the winter.
According to legend, when a young King Otto travelled from Bavaria to Greece to inherit the kingdom, he couldn't hear the sounds he loved - horses. So he had his guards walk in this manner to mimic the sound and therefore make him feel closer to home.
The Evzones, also known as tsoliades, are typically chosen from the Greek special armed units and must also meet the height requirement of 1.87 metres (6.1 feet). This particular unit has been there for more than a century.
The Tsarouchia shoes of the Evzones weigh more than three kilogrammes and have at least 60 nails on the base of the shoe that recreate the sound of battle while the Evzone moves. The toe of the Tsarouchia is pointed upwards and covered by a hand-cut black silk pom pom. The shoe's basis is crafted of cowhide, and each shoe requires over 300 hand stitches to hold it together. On each leg, the Evzones wear two pairs of Periskelides (woollen stockings) held up by Epiknemides (silk garters with tassels).
*Sorry about the background traffic noise it couldn't be avoided as I needed to record the sound of the clog like shoes the Tsarouchia in my video.

Massive respect for these guys! As I understand it, the slow and careful steps represent the stepping over of dead bodies of their compatriots of the war of independence in 1821. The foot forward and reverse movement is a salute to these dead also. The Evzones don’t speak because the dead don’t speak and it is them who they represent. 🇬🇷Never forget

The training and discipline they go through is really tough. These are very special guards. He didn't even blink an eyelid . They are out in all weather and because of the Summer heat a soldier comes to wipe him dry and re arrange his distinctive uniform.
