- The Sentinels at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier stand guard 24 hours a day year-round to protect those that gave everything in service of their nation. What does it take to become a Sentinel? In our new series "Behind the Old Guard," we take an in-depth look at some of the specialty units in the 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment.

My mother taught me how to sew.No need to join the armed forces.She also taught me how to cook.My father taught me how to change a flat tyre on a car,renew a washer on a leaking tap and dig up weeds from the garden etc etc.
My husband's grandfather just celebrated his 100th birthday and is the eldest living Sentinel :) He's flying down in May for a private ceremony and the opportunity to see his name placed in its rightful spot on the wall. Grandpa Jack definitely has tons of interesting stories to tell!

It's one thing seeing them during the day but when you realize that at 3:30 a.m on a cold and rainy winter morning, while you're snugly tucked into bed, these sentries are walking their post.
They give everything
From what I recall they are rotated out every 30mins during the summer and every 1hr during the winter. So its not just one the whole night. The weather in VA can be harsh every other day summers of 90° or cold snow below 10 degrees in winter so it makes sense that they would do this.

I'm 59, honorably discharged from the US Army since 1991 and rarely get over emotional but I'm in tears watching this. That happens to me every single time because I know what it's all about, why the dedicated sentinels do their sacred work and guard the unknown soldiers with great honor and commitment.
I salute each and every Tomb sentinel both past and present for the wonderful work you do protecting those soldiers and the ultimate price and sacrifice they paid.
Perhaps my active duty military service ended in 1991 but my honoring my enlistment oath to protect the United States from all enemies, foreign and domestic, didn't.
What gives the Old Guard credibility is the fact that they do not just guard the tomb of the unknown soldier, but that they understand the history behind it, and the gravity of their task. As a history student from the Netherlands, I find it reassuring that the task of safeguarding history does not rest squarely on the shoulders of academics. As the Old Guard protects and commemorates the legacy of the unknown soldier, so too must we academics safeguard history as a whole, to ensure that it is not corrupted by false information, and to pass it on to the next generation. I find it troubling when people say that soldiers should not be honoured because something questionable happened during a certain war. Anyone that gave his life in service to his country deserves the respect of it's citizens, the same way that any state that sends men to war has a responsibility to honour the memory of the fallen, to care for those that became disabled during their service to the nation, and to support those that lived to reach retirement age. That's why the Old Guard can be cited as an inspirational group of men. They are the physical embodiment of a nation's gratitude.

As a former Marine, I am in complete awe of this regiment of soldiers. The discipline, poise, integrity, and grace at which they perform their duties is truly exceptional and amazing. It makes me so proud of my country to know that these distinguished gentlemen are representing the finest military organization in the world and are on watch 24/7 for our beloved fallen.

As a New Zealander I'm in awe of this precision professionalism. Also I have a great uncle,who was KIA in France in WW1. All he has is a name plake, on a memorial with 75,000 other names. These young men have no grave. They died in the churning mud of "no man's land", after, "going over the top". We commerate them on ANZAC day, April 25th every year. Thanks sentinels 🌹
My uncle retired from the U.S. Army fighting 3 wars as a paratrooper with the 82nd airborne and his final duty station was with the old guard as the command sergeant major.

@@assassin7250 I thought as much, from your question. The OP (Craig Wood) was saying he spent 29 years in the US Army, and retired as a Sergeant Major, not that he spent 29 years as a SGM. He would have been promoted over the course of his career to achieve that rank.
I was there with my father , veteran of the Korean War , in 2019 through the Kentucky honor guard , I am not military but am in total awe for these dedicated sentenals , thank you greatly for your service and thank you for your dedication , you are our heroes
I considered myself a pretty damn good soldier. But there's not a chance in hell I could become one of these amazing examples of perfection. Thank you Sentinels for your service to country and the unknowns.
For those who may have some questions, here is a bit of info I found interesting:
It takes a special kind of person to be a guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
1. How many steps does the guard take during his walk across the tomb of
the Unknowns and why? 21 steps.. It alludes to the twenty-one gun
salute, which is the highest honor given any military or foreign
dignitary.
2. How long does he hesitate after his about face to begin his return
walk and why? 21 seconds for the same reason as answer number 1.
3. Why are his gloves wet? His gloves are moistened to prevent his
losing his grip on the rifle.
4. Does he carry his rifle on the same shoulder all the time, and if
not, why not? He carries the rifle on the shoulder away from the tomb.
After his march across the path, he executes an about face, and moves
the rifle to the outside shoulder.
5. How often are the guards changed? Guards are changed every thirty
minutes, twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year.
6. What are the physical traits of the guard limited to? For a person to
apply for guard duty at the tomb, he must be between 5' 10" and 6' 2"
tall and his waist size cannot exceed 30."
Other requirements of the Guard: They must commit 2 years of their life
to guard the tomb, live in a barracks under the tomb, and cannot drink
any alcohol on or off duty for the rest of their lives. They cannot
swear in public for the rest of their lives and cannot disgrace the
uniform {fighting} or the tomb in any way. After two years, the guard is
given a wreath pin that is worn on their lapel signifying they served as
guard of the tomb. There are only 400 presently worn.
The guard must obey these rules for the rest of their lives or give up
the wreath pin. The shoes are specially made with very thick soles to
keep the heat and cold from their feet. There are metal heel plates that
extend to the top of the shoe in order to make the loud click as they
come to a halt. There are no wrinkles, folds or lint on the uniform.
Guards dress for duty in front of a full-length mirror. The first six
months of duty a guard cannot talk to anyone, nor watch TV.
All off duty time is spent studying the 175 notable people laid to rest
in Arlington National Cemetery. A guard must memorize who they are and
where they are interred. Among the notables are: President Taft, Joe E.
Lewis {the boxer} and Medal of Honor winner Audie Murphy, {the most
decorated soldier of WWII} of Hollywood fame. Every guard spends five
hours a day getting his uniforms ready for guard duty.
On the ABC evening news, it was reported that, because of the dangers
from Hurricane Isabelle approaching Washington DC, the military members
assigned the duty of guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier were given
permission to suspend the assignment. They respectfully declined the
offer, "No way, Sir!" Soaked to the skin, marching in the pelting rain
of a tropical storm, they said that guarding the Tomb was not just an
assignment, it was the highest honor that can be afforded to a
service person. Funny, that our US Senate/House took 2 days off, saying
that they couldn't work because of the expected storm. The tomb has been
patrolled continuously, 24/7, since 1930.
No, this is a false rumor. The average tour at the Tomb is about a 18 months. However, there is NO set time for service there. Sentinels live either in a barracks on Ft. Myer (the Army post located adjacent to the cemetery) or off base if they like. They do have a living quarters under the steps of the amphitheater where they stay during their 24 hour shifts. If they are of legal age, they may drink except while on duty.

Something I find in a lot of military personnel around the world is honor and dedication, but I have to say, American military men and women are some of the most dedicated people i have met. I'm proud that while our government might not be the best right now, our troops are the world standard for skill, efficiency and honor. So much respect to the Sentinels, and my condolences to the families who lost their loved ones to war.

I've thought about it. Having had my 7th great grandfather in the Revolutionary War, several great uncles, 2 uncles, a grandfather and a father all in World War II it instills a sense of patriotism. All of them came back. Didn't lose a one, praise be to God. But I DO feel sorry for those who lost family. This is what all these people who disrespect our country (in MANY different ways) need to learn.
Well said. I served in the service. Seen no action at all can't imagine what people have gone thru. I go to memorial day services no matter where I'm at. Town , city, state. Does not matter. I will allways be so thankfull and I will allways render my salute to the fallen and the passed away veterans. This ladies and gentlemen is what I do. Very emotional day I stand off to myself at an attention and rendering that well deserved salute they deserve. Period.

Every time I observe the unknown soldier landscape, the guard in action, or the ceremony, I'm moved. My thanks and deepest respect to those that step up and gave to achieve perfection in representing and guarding those that gave their body, their name, their essence for this country. @Felipe Meza The Unknown Soldier from World War I lies underneath the large sarcophagus. World War II and Korean War unidentified service members lie in two crypts in front of the sarcophagus. An empty third crypt represents missing service members from Vietnam.

Seeing this in person changed my life. It was the most beautiful show of respect I’ve ever seen.
I am an American citizen who was incapable of serving his country in the military, but I do know in-person a few who have served.

Believe it or not, taking the small amount of time to thank a service member means more to us than you will ever know. I think I can speak for most if not all servicemen/women, the simple act of a handshake and a thank you means the world. I don't care about military discounts, or those yellow magnetic ribbons etc. But to actually take the time to personally acknowledge us and what we sacrifice and do for every American... words can't describe the pride we feel... especially knowing there are still some Americans out there that respect us and remember us. EVA even tho you may not have been able to serve, i think there is a military heart beating in that chest of yours. To those out there that have less than nice or good comments about our military and the TOTUS... lace up a pair of boots, grab a rifle and "Follow ME!" You may change your tune once you experience what these young men and women are doing day in and day out, especially those that guard this tomb. Utmost respect to these Sentinels. It takes a special kind of soldier to do what they do. A dedication, commitment, honor, integrity, sacrifice etc that 99% of most people in the world don't have.

Being a Navy Veteran I have the utmost respect for these gentlemen who are The Sentinels of The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. It makes me proud to know fellow military personnel of this caliber are protecting those who served and protected our country and died for our country. Thank you and all who have served this great country and especially those who have fallen during their serving and afterwards. We should never forget them.

What a tremendous honor to be selected as a Sentinel that I have had the privilege to witness the changing of the guard in person, never have I had such a heart pumping experience amongst pure silence...such a powerful, respectful, and honorable ceremonial tradition.
These men & women Sentinels of the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (Old Guard) have my utmost respect and gratitude for their overwhelming dedication that they do not for fame or recognition as Sentinels have no official military rank essentially making them the lowest ranking unit members of the armed forces. There is no rank insignia on their uniform, this is done to make sure they do not outrank any individual that is buried at the tomb.

Greetings from Ireland. As a civilian I have a lot of respect for persons who join the armed forces worldwide and am keen to learn more about the people who choose to do so. While I had heard of the unknowns before, I had no idea of the honour guard until recently when a video came up on my feed. To say it is a truly inspiring thing to see such dedication is an understatement. The effort and level of respect is clear to see to anyone who understands true sacrifice to the benefit of others.

We can all respect a PFC for being a top notched soldier. I met a lot of privates in the army when I served and most of those clowns were immature as fuck. Showed no respect for the uniform. It takes a lot to volunteer for such a difficult job, I personally could never do it.

What do you expect from kids straight out of high school? Sure they’ll be an occasional high speed private, but the majority needs a little guidance and mentoring...that’s when leadership steps in to teach that soldier some discipline and spark a fire under their ass! It’s not always the soldiers fault, but how (and if) he was trained properly.
My platoon sergeant at Basic volunteered for Drill duty after spending several years guarding the Tomb. We were the best drilled, best looking basic training unit in the entire goddamn army that rotation. The very first day at my very first duty assignment they had a company D&C competition and I won the shit out of it. Got huge kudos from the BC, a coin from him and the CSM and a cushy assignment at the BN as a mission manager for linguists instead of sitting rack with them. Thanks Sergeant Martinez!
I have always had great respect for American patriotism, symbolism and keeping traditions. One of the great examples is the US military and everything that goes with it, design, (important detail) preservation of tradition and attention to detail. An excellent example of showing attention and paying tribute to one's country and veterans. Greetings from Croatia!

I was never Honor Guard for The Tomb of The Unknown Soldiers, but I was a Member of Funeral Detail Honor Guard for Southern California from 2000-2002. Honoring our 'Known' fallen Soldiers!
I take pride in being a 101st Airborne vet but these troops have a level of dedication I could never hope to achieve. Enormous respect for the men and women who do this duty.

Thanks, me too; and just In 1965-67 : ARMY ROTC( SSG,HONOR GUARD), PURDUE... had the INDIANAPOLIS 500 “ assign ents : troop the COLORS” in the Parade etc.,& .,the Army BALL, etc. Black PAratrooper Boot, Summer Blouse / White NECKING @ COLOR Guard.. We had Silver Buttons on Green TUNIC UNIFORMS, ETC.Anyways, lot of uniform work :: though I think,**Naval ROTC HAD MORE UNIFORMS/& of the Day......than ARMY OR AIR FORCE.....
My wife taught 7&8th grade for 33 years.Every year the 8th graders went to DC, and a wreath laying at Arlington was always in the agenda. I was lucky enough to be a chaperone for 25 plus years, and every one was better than the last. She retired 5 years ago, and the tour company that did her DC trips hired her and has her doing the Honor Flights now.

These incredible soldiers and sentinels are the absolute epitome of being squared away! The commitment that goes into what they do is crazy and the way they perform their duty is absolutely amazing.
The Queens Guard has NOTHING on the Tomb soldiers. This is awesome. And an inspiration in world where perfection is thought of as an unobtainable goal best left avoided.

I believe that if the Army decided that they would no longer issue the Sentinel badge, never acknowledge your service as a Sentry and never recorded it on your record, they would still see just as many volunteers for the posting.

I visited two years ago and left with many powerful emotions. The worst emotion I felt was disgust at the lack of respect shown by many of the visitors. Texting during the changing, talking, goofing off, not standing when they were supposed to, just an overall lack of any respect. I was shaking because I was so angry. If it weren't for the fact that I would be disrespecting the Tomb myself, I would have started cracking heads and kicking ass. People, if you do get the privilege of seeing the Tomb, please turn off your phone, remove your hat, stand politely and stfu. Very simple and very easy behavior. Yes, if you're disabled or handicapped or physically unable, I understand that. And keep control of your children.

This perfectly describes my feelings when I was there. I got to see the last change of visiting hours, and even then, there were people that disrespected the Old Guard and the Fallen.

ive always wanted to be an honor guard, my grandpa and uncle died in the forces, we never got to burry our uncle, I've wanted to protect and honor the ones that gave their all. I have so much respect for sentinels and unknowns.

My dad was somewhat recently a part of a group that laid a wreath there. He noted about how the soldier who instructed him was very casual and relaxed until it was time for the ceremony to begin. Then he became very formal (if that's the right word) and stiff, but in the same way you see here, of course.

A realization I had as I watched this video, the soldiers represented by the tomb are soldiers who gave not just their lives and dreams, but they even gave up their names and identities in the service of their country.

I find it reassuring they are given history tests. The academic simply means scholar, or educated. Anyone can attain the title. It simply requires a craving for knowledge and more knowledge. You don't need a college degree for that. That's simply a lazy, eternal victim cop-out.
Watching the discipline, deep respect, and honor given to the "unknown" soldier inspires pride in every American.
I wish the same was given to other American achievements

I found cousins of my great grandparents who never got to come home in history and ww2 books.
It was nice to learn about what kind of men and soldiers my family members were, but it was upsetting an I cried when I read how they died.

God bless our military... Our young men and women are deserving of such respect. My daughter is in the Navy and it isn't easy, but she loves her country. A lesson a few college brats I see on TH-cam should learn to do!

To watch these "special men" go through the drill, prep their uniform, polish their leather, it astounds me of the discipline it takes to do this. Its makes me proud to be an American.
My Dad is a former Navy SEAL, Vietnam Veteran. He said, in his opinion, SEALs got nothing on these guys...Dad also said had he been in the Army, he never would have had what it takes to be a sentinel.
Thank you so much. I appreciate all who serve and have served honorably before. Watching the changing of the guard was a very humbling experience for me. I can honestly say that it helped me keep a grounded perspective when I deployed.
