My current project is a Saskia, The Unyielding deck where the goal is to select myself as the target and get out Darien, King of Kjeldor as the surprise commander. Turns out when you make Darien 4 colours, ramp into him and give him a free consistent source of huge damage he's absolutely nuts.

Throw a Brawn in the deck, like I did, since some hydras don't naturally have Trample. Literally use Brawn as a chump blocker or let yourself discard it somehow; but this has black and blue in its cost, meaning it really isn't hard to do this. Only requirements are that it stays there and you have a Forest

So, one issue: it isn’t when you use that mana you make a hydra, it’s when you cast a spell with an X cost in general. No need for you to use the mana from the commander for the hydra. With proper ramp, you can make several a turn

Also, Lucea Kane is like Zaxara, but Temur and therefore better, because I want to play Shivan Devastator and Winged Hive Tyrant 😹
The coolest zaxara deck I played was one that never actually paid more than 0. If you play something like Walking balista for 0, zaxara makes a 0/0 token that dies, and then the balista dies. It also turns out that there are loads of cards that reanimate 0 power 0-1 CMC creatures, so you can pay 0-1 mana to make 2 things that die, so you play X=0 aristocrats. Post mortem lunge even let's you pay 0 mana to make a 0/0, then reanimate a 0/0 that dies. Super fucking cool deck

I have a X spell Zaxara deck that just uses Pemmin's Aura/ Freed From the real to make infinite mana and dome people with Mind Scour after drawing my library. Great times! :D
Can’t forget the ability to make infinite mana with freed from the reel or pemmin’s aura, gotta love a two card combo where one of those cards is in your command zone
This pales in comparison to Lucea Kane. The interaction of red/blue, doubling everything, and untapping her through various schemes to copy the next spell a hundred times.
Oh dont worry, the mana can also be doubled. Also look up castle garenberg (or whatever its called, green land), literally lets you turn 4 mana into 18 with nyxbloom
MY Zaxara deck only had like, 4 other Hydras in it. I run cards like Mind Spring and Blue Sun's, Villainous Wealth, Exsanguinate, Strength of the Tjuru...
Mass Manipulation would be down right _evil_ in this deck. XX and 3 blue, take control of 1 creature per XX you pay, and pump out Hydra tokens. You even have the ramp to make it good.
As a Zaxara player I can say that I have only ever won once by swing out with an army of hydra. They normally just sit there and block since they don't have trample and just turbo charge Selvala so I can mind grind and exsanguinate my opponents out. Also since the tokens enter as 0/0 then get counters they don't trigger cards like Kiora, behemoth beckoner and garruk's uprising.
I uh... yeah uh... Tbh I wish Zaxara decks played like this. I see Zaxara and the only card I can think of is Freed from the Reel and there is nothing they are doing but comboing your face off. One big stompy card would be something that made me happy to see.

I run Freed From The Real, but my only tutor is Emergent Ultimatum. It's in there because games have to end.
Pemmin's Aura ALSO works...
and can give it shroud....

or fiddle with it's stats a bit if someone tries to throw a burn spell at it.^^
I have Freed in my deck but use no tutors, I use it as a backup and prefer to stomp people with hydras
