How I built my end grain knife throwing targets - Bladed Broad Style!

- This video details the step by step process of how I built my new end grain knife throwing targets in order to prepare for competitive knife throwing. It outlines the steps I have taken to build the strongest and most secure target that I know of, and what it took to get it up to par with the IKTHOF (International Knife Throwers Hall Of Fame) target outline. This was quite a project - one that was very close to my heart - and throughout the entire process, I could feel how much this all was meant to be. I am anxious at the thought of competing and never in my life have I felt more connected to anything I have done or put my heart in to.
Although this video shows my targets being built from a competition standpoint, it's a great way to build any kind of knife throwing target as well. And it is also the same way I built my last target.

Have you tried a palm sander with maybe 220 grit might save a lot of time and get same result.

Ha good finish "reason why" put this in my knife YT folder. Got a set of knives and very little area to dedicate for a target area, maybe the dirt alley behind and the telephone pole to hang it on? Going through my ancient old boxes of stuff and found a throwing knife set maybe time to do that. Got a pic from my daughter with my 9 yr.? old granddaughter getting a bullseye with an axe. Might have started something. I'm 76 and lived in my own house surrounded with weapons, rifles, guns from my pioneering ancestry so I made my own weapons from my native reading and encyclopedia stuff like a slings and bolos ... instead of learning sports (a form of battle training) I made my own knives and practiced throwing weapons like the machetes on my walls. All surrounded by West L.A. blue ribbon schools. Good job on this vid five years later, once posted eternally accessed. My father would give me presents of knives as a kid. Need a cutoff saw or HD rental of one.

you did an amazing job on that, i should have used the 4x4 blocks, i used 2x4's and stacked 8 rows of 24.

glad i came across this, i will be doing something similar to this for a throwing axe target
That video is pretty cool. Log sections are great but are hard to come by for many people and hard to mount. This takes a lot of work but seems like a great way to get the advantages of a log.

Nice job. Here’s a tip for cutting your pieces- set up a stop block on your miter saw so you don’t have to measure each time you cut.

Got a tip for the sliding blocks. Sprinkle some salt on the wood glue, it will keep them from sliding.

I use more glue (with a slower set time) when gluing the blocks together, but no backboard because I throw at it from both sides. I set 2 posts in the ground with a cross piece and hung it from that with chains.

I just found your channel. I'm learning no-spin but it's not easy. That target looks great! I used 2x8s but mine is already falling apart mostly from my tomahawks. I'll have to try the end-grain to see if that lasts longer. Thank you!
I think the screws were overkill but very solid. Glad to see the kids there with ya. Some of my favorite memories as a kid were from woodshop

Sand before cutting, belt sander. Some pallets have nice wooden block spacers that work well to make targets cheaply.

TIP: Instead of sanding one block & edge at a time. Lay a group of blocks on their sides. Clamp them together and down in a flat surface. Use a belt sander and or random orbital sander (or even a hand power planer) and sand them all/group of them at the same time (as if it were a mini tabletop).
One of THE best methods to hold down and preven sliding/slipping around (and protect) your project while sanding is to use a yoga mat. Much better than using drawer/shelf liner (which some people use and isn’t bad)
I can't wait till I'm off paper and can have throwing knives and tomahawks again. I'll be rusty at first, but will come back quickly.

Next time consider making your plywood backing long on each side. Use this to screw to the plywood backing.

Very nice setup you have ,do you prefer light or heavier knifes or both for throwing?
Miwax stain is interior color for wood. it will not seal and protect anything without using either polyurethane (for interior) or sparurethane ( for exterior use). It might bead up slightly as it is an oil and will be absorbed into the wood but you would be better off with an exterior deck stain or paint

I love to hear that your entire family throws! That's really amazing! I do throw axes at these targets - however, they eat them up quite a bit more than my knives. What I plan to do is build something where I can use log rounds for axes. I have actually thought about a target behind me (when throwing at this target) for that. I will have to see. Axes definitely do more damage! but it is possible! :)

I paint my end gran targets with motor oil . Work better than water and last much longer.
Her knife throwing skills are a bit better than mine, as in a LOT better!!!

When you zoomed in on the bullseye, I noticed something white coming out of each end grain piece. Is that wood glue? Rain water? Paint? Or something else, just curious. Great build!

Is it possible to make it less deep / seems to be a lot of wood for what appears to needing a target only 3-4 inches deep.

Cool! I've always wanted to make a real target, instead of throwing at big pieces of wood I find in the forest. If I don't have clamps, is there any way you would suggest to make an end-grain target and still have it tight? Or would it be better to just buy clamps?
Do you have any ratchet straps? You could try using those or even just paracord if you can tighten the knots strong enough. I hope that helps you some! :)
