How I Practice No Spin Knife Throwing

  • I've been getting many comments from first-time viewers to my channel. Here are answer to frequently-made-comments:
    1) Do your neighbors complain about the knife throwing?
    No complaints on sound, as I would throw at a reasonable hour for an hour or so. There are much louder noises around, like frequent lawn mowers and building construction. In fact, the neighbor that lives behind me thought it was great that I was knife throwing. (That clip is at the very end of my "Vertical vs. End Grain Target" video).
    2) Have you thrown your knife at your dog or over the fence?
    No. I carefully selected the placement of my target so it's far enough away that I wouldn't hit a nearby fence, plus it's an area where my dogs do not frequent. If my dog gets in the "danger zone" of my range, I shoo them away or sometimes I leave them inside the house. Why I don't leave them inside is because they're dogs and love to be outside. It'd be mean to let them stay inside all day.
    3) Your form sucks. Your throw is weak. Anyone can throw from that close. You wouldn't be able to kill anyone with that throw.
    This video simply shows how I begin my warm up. If you want to see trick shots or throwing from farther distances, you can watch my other videos. In this video, I'm working on my 4 m throw, but now I'm comfortable past this mark. As for killing people, that's how movies portray knife throwing. This is a sport in which there are competitions around the world involving accuracy and distance, usually using the conventional rotational technique. Basically, most throwers aren't doing it for self-defense.
    4) The knife is spinning! How is there no spin?
    No spin is a misnomer. You can learn more about no spin vs. rotational throwing here: • PART 1: Best Indoor P...
    I also compiked this playlist to help beginners in no spin: • No Spin Tutorial Video...

      I personally wouldn't mind if my neighbour was doing this or even shooting. All I'd ask is please hang a sign over the fence so I know you're doing it just in case I or the kids need to go outside. Just common courtesy.

    Hi Xolette!
    I am brand new to the knife throwing community. Just got my first set as a Christmas present from my son! I have always loved blades of all types and dreamed about learning how to dance with a sword and throw knives, but felt like people would think that was a strange thing for a woman to do (especially a mom) so I kept my desire a secret shared with only a select few. This is my decade for following my dreams though, I’m currently in my 3rd semester of nursing school, which, at 46, is more than 20 yrs of kids/wife/working for a paycheck in the making. Finally following my heart, and being successful in this journey has inspired me to pursue the other interests I have had all of my life. I am very happy to have stumbled upon your TH-cam channel. This was the 5th video I watched on beginner throwing, but the first one with a female and the only one I felt truly captured the same spirit I have about throwing knives. I look forward to watching the rest of your videos. Thank you so much for taking the stigma out of female knife throwing. One question: In your interview with Thronin, you mentioned that you don’t care much for 4 to 6 inch throwing knives (my gifted set falls in that range and to me they are tiny beautiful ladies); could you please provide some of your expert insight behind your statement, as I am a complete novice. Much appreciation and stick wishes! Jennifer

    • @Xolette
      @Xolette  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      What a great gift from your son! I'm glad you're taking up knife throwing. Make sure to check out the Bladed Broad and Adam Celadin; they are great TH-camr knife throwers. To answer your question it may help to check out my best beginner throwing knives video and to read the description as I go over specific measurements on what I consider a good throwing knife. Small throwing knives that are too light have a tendency to ricochet too fast, plus you have to stand pretty close to the target in order to hit it. Overall, they're a bit more dangerous to throw which is why a longer knife that's heavier is better plus you have more range; you can stand farther away and get a stick. Hope that helps! There are Facebook knife throwing groups as well. I have a video on it. And the bladed broad also has a knife throwing page. Thank you for sharing your story!

    I've been throwing knives for 45+ years.
    No spin throwing at short distances is fine, but most instruments available for throwing, in a pinch, won't have the straight back necessary for that type of throw.
    You need to be able to throw any blade you can find available, and spin throwing provides that!
    Knowing that the blade will pivot on the center of balance, it's best to practice with a variety of weights and balances.
    One butcher knife, one steak knife, one folding knife, and you have a good test group.
    When you release, the knife will naturally spin, without wrist action.
    And you need to pay attention to each throw without worrying about sticking it, 'cause you won't at first.
    Once you've gauged distance for a "half-spin", practice from there!
    Over time, as you adapt to the weight and balance, your aim and technique will improve!

      +campfiretrickery Long ago, I threw the shovel... it's pretty much the same as throwing anything else. :) Just have to understand how the knife rotates. :) I was thinking of throwing my machete... but it'd have to be for something special, because that thing is big and sharp!

      +Andy Fisher Thanks, Andy! It's coming soon! I finally got to listen to Episode 4 of the Podcast with Edwardes? Your parkour friend. And I loved all the neuroscience talk. I used to teach my kids a little neuroscience. One really cool experiment deals with making what you would call "drunk goggles"-- just goggles that that skew your vision to the left. And then you have a kid throw balls into a basket, using the goggles. And you'll find at first they miss, always aiming to the left of the basket, but then they get used to their skewed vision, and begin making shots. Once they do that, you remove the goggles, and you find even without the impaired vision, they will consistently miss the basket because their brains had quickly made neural connections for this new skill. But then of course, those connections are lost immediately (though if a kid wore the goggles for long periods of time, it could seriously permanently mess up their vision!) Anyway, really cool experiment. Would love to make a video for it on my science channel! Anyways, totally off topic, but wanted to share that I've been enjoying the podcast!

      +Xolette repetition yes! but forreal I read it somewhere
      here it is just Googled it
      It takes anywhere from 6-10 years toget great at something, depending on how often and how much you do it. Some estimate that it takes 10,000 hours to master something, but I think it varies from person to person and depends on the skill and other factors

    You should practice with human figure cut-outs, and definately work more on your form. From what I saw you would never hit a moving person, especially with that lack luster force behing your throws. Just my harsh critique of the video. Do what you want..

    • @Xolette
      @Xolette  7 ปีที่แล้ว +60

      I don't throw knives to help me throw knives at people, which I think is a poor weapon of choice for self defense. Just like some people shoot arrows or throw darts at a target, I throw knives for the same reason.

    • @isacook8728
      @isacook8728 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Xolette Fair enough, I just feel you never know what positions you may find yourself in. Maybe all you have around is a knife and an attacker is after you but isnt aware to your location, if you were good at throwing knifes then bam, problem solved. Nonetheless I understand its fun, and like I said, do what you want. Just my thoughts on your video that I stumbled upon. If anything you throw better than most people I know.

    • @Kraakesolv
      @Kraakesolv 7 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Isa Cook Throwing a knife at a person, even from a hidden position, would be a terrible idea. The chance it would incapacitate is very small and more likely then not you'd be in a lot more trouble than if you'd stayed out of sight. Throwing the knife is never, ever a good idea and is only for recreational purposes.

    • @isacook8728
      @isacook8728 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kraakesolv Not true.. I can think of instances where I could throw a knife at a person. And it would function in a normal way, if you know how to throw a knife..

      Xolette I don't get why people do that, like they gotta share some crappy thought, often even mixing it in with a compliment lol. It's like seeing some videos that are perfect, in *every* possible way, but then it gets these inevitable dislikes. My theory is that there are these "people" who see a thumbnail of interest, click on it, *IMMEDIATELY* thumb it down out of some miserable compulsion.. and THEN, watch it 😅
      Personally, when I throw things at the camp site, like a Glock 78 or a Cold Steel shovel, I'm happy enough just to keep from missing the tree altogether lol. Great vid, awesome skills, very informative and thanks for taking the time to share :) 👍

    I am much, much older than you and have been throwing knives since I was 8 years old. If you want to become accurate with just about ANY knife you will need to learn how to throw holding the blade always. This is the only truly reliable way to throw a knife with any kind of consistency and accuracy. I like that you are throwing what I would consider specialty knives because you can get consistency down faster. When you can grab any knife and just by feeling the weight of the knife know instinctively how you must throw the knife and hit your target you will be pretty good. By the way here is a tip. Buy yourself some military surplus bayonets or some good Bowie knives. Nothing like the real thing to learn with.
