Making an axe throwing target

I had an idea on how to make an axe-throwing target with scrap wood and really fast. Time to find out if it works or not.

Good project. Grab a weed sprayer and wet the wood before throwing. The axes will penetrate and hold better.

I made similar for a throwing knife target but using 3x4, i had to screw every piece in from the back with a single screw as they eventually worked their way out. The single screw means theyre easy to replace as and when i need to. Cool project!

Not sure if you're target's still in use but a tip for throwing the axe, outside of technique, is wetting the board so it's softer. There's a spot out here called Whiskey Hatchet and that's a thing they recommend if the axes won't stick

I feel like the quilt like layout of the wood grains make it harder for the axes to penetrate. Every target I’ve ever seen has the board running specifically vertical so the wood grain matches the plane of the axe blade. Also, as many have already said, most facilities wet the wood with a spray bottle or something to make it soft for penetration and more elastic to keep it from splintering as much. That said, that’s a high quality target. Way more creative than I would’ve been with it

These are a lot of fun. It's best if there is some kind of backdrop behind them. My friend is building a catch shelf just down from the target, so we old guys don't have to bend down to our ankles.

My guess it that the axes probably stick a little easier once they have knocked some of the boards back a little so that the next one can focus their energy onto a smaller piece of wood and go a bit deeper.

Get yourself some tomahawks (easily replaceable handles) and play a game called, handles. The object is to break or split the handle of your opponent. You can have up to 4 players, any more and it gets pretty tight. If you don’t stick your throw you have to put you tomahawk with the handle crossing the center of the target horizontally. It’s a fun game to play.

Got to soak it. Should've put it out in that rain! I throw in a league and you can tell instantly when a board is to dry. Everything starts bouncing off.

Don't get frustrated you did an awesome build you did everything right and yes lower it a bit build a build a frame around it to keep your misses from following through next is get you a 2 gallon sprayer and wet your target good about every 30 minutes and your sticks will be way much better enjoy be safe and have tons of fun.

My grandfather would make lighter tomahawks for the kids. 2’ steel pipe an inch or so long, squeezed slightly to make it an oval, and a triangle shaped blade head “tomahawk size,” made from 1/8 in circular saw blade and welded on to the pipe. Cut some branches and fit them in and your golden
