Best Beginner Throwing Knives (Part 1 of 3)

  • FAQ: Is [insert knife brand here] good for a beginner?
Believe it or not, I haven't thrown every knife on the market, so I can't say a set of knives are good or bad if I haven't thrown them. Check my "Throwing Knife Reviews" playlist to see most of the knives I own:
    www.youtube.com....
Here are the golden rules I follow when looking at throwing knives that would work for me:
    1) Length should be over 8". I prefer the 10" length for no-spin throwing. For rotational throwing in a competition, the length should be 12" - 14". If you are throwing indoors at a closer range, than a 6" knife is doable as the benefit is less damage to your area and the length is okay for 2 m throws. But, smaller knives work best with targets that are easier to penetrate, like a rubber mat, archery target, cardboard, and broken-in end grain. For bo-shuriken, it's normal for the length to be around 6" and these work best with the targets described above.
In the "Best Mid-Range Throwing Knife" video, I recommend the Cold Steel Sure Flights as you can do both rotational knife throwing and no spin. Although, they can be bit too light for rotational and a bit too long for no spin, however, for the price, it's a great starter set to see what style you gravitate towards. I find that most people love either Cold Steel, Condor, or John Bailey knives for their starter sets and after that, they move onto custom. If you're into no-spin, a lot of people love Flying Steel for their quality and ease in throwing.
    2) The weight of the knife is important. Lighter knives are easier to throw quickly, but at farther distances can be flimsy. Heavy knives do great for throwing at long distances, but can be cumbersome to hold. Find out the weight ratio of your knife by dividing the weight in ounces by the length in inches. A light knife will be 0.4 - 0.6 ounces per inch. A medium weighted knife will be 0.7 - 0.9 oz/in. Heavy knives are usually 1 - 1.4 oz/in. The lighter the knife, the better it'll be at short range and for quick throws. The heavier the knife, the better it'll be at long range, but can be cumbersome to hold. Some of my favorite knives are in the 0.6 - 0.8 oz/in range, but that's because I like the feel of a lighter knife for no spin throwing.
Shuriken or spikes should have a weight ratio of 0.3 - 0.4-- the light weight actually works well for long distance throws.
Some of my worst knives had a weight ratio of 0.2 - 0.3 ounces per inch. Stay away from these knives!
    3) The price of EACH knife should be above $10. I prefer paying $20 per knife or more. The more you spend on the knife, the more likely the quality of the knife will increase. Do not fall for the $15 for a set of 6 or 12 knives. You get exactly what you pay for when you buy a knife that costs a few dollars each-- a low-quality knife that will most likely bend, break, chip and won't throw well.
    4) Buy from a knife maker if you can. Of course, a custom-made knife is going to be more expensive (about $30 per knife and up) than the mass-produced ones found in popular online stores, but it will most likely be made from quality steel and be heat-treated. Not to mention, designed by actual knife throwers and not people who have never thrown knives.
If you don't know what heat treated means and/or you want to know more about quality steel, check out this video:

    5) If you must go for mass-produced, go for a knife that's been designed by a knife thrower, like Gil Hibben or John Bailey. Joe Flowers is a knife maker who designed the Condor Dismissal (amzn.com/B003DA...) and it's very popular amongst knife throwers.
Here's my review on the Condor Dismissal:
    www.youtube.co....
Popular Sites that sell Low-end Throwing Knives:
    www.bladeplay.c....

    6) Always buy a set. It's the best way to build body memory with a knife as well as reduce your time in retrieving. I prefer a set of 6 if I really like the knife, but that can be too expensive, so consider a set of 3.

By the way, it kind of doesn't feel as special, because my twin hit her million view milestone long ago-- now she's at three million!! It sucks for her because she chose music that doesn't allow her to make money off her video! I told her to, but she wouldn't listen. Now she regrets it. :) th-cam.com/video/yAUhTPqESdk/w-d-xo.html

Even as a beginner at throwing knives, I found that a truly decent set of knives is more economical, less frustrating and encourages proper technique. Lemme elaborate: I've been through several sets of Boker, Hibben, ColdSteel, SOG, Gerber, no name brands, and I've even ground my own. Every set has broken, bent, or left without mates. I believe the keys here are: 1) Material: Spring steel (dunno the hardness standard here, sorry, but prolly mid range to avoid brittleness. As long as the quenching process was done correctly, it should be good to go). 2) Thickness of said material: at least 1/4" from tang to tip. 3) Weight: 12" knife at one pound is a good ratio that's a lot of fun for me.
Now, I'm not saying get on the waiting list for a set of Randall made Knives. I have an eBay set made by Jeff White. Supposedly they are handmade drop points. They are awesome though.
When your toys break, you try to fix them. Now you're fixin shit instead of playing with your toys. Get great knives for thirty bucks a pop and go have fun. Now if you're a badass, and I'm not, you'll prolly get a lil more life outta cheap knives (cause they're stickin and not bangin around). Case in point: Case made throwing knives and they're like delicate for lack of a better word. If I miss threw that, and I would....boom it's broken, done. And I'm bummed.
The more I throw with one set of knives, the more I find that I figure them out. I can get consistent. Now, that might translate into throwing better overall and over all sets of knives....eventually. Dunno, but hey you only live once so you might as well enjoy what you do when you're not working.

      @Xolette  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Chris Roush Great advice, Chris! Thanks for sharing your input. I was throwing the other day and realized I was spending more time grinding down burrs than throwing. It was really frustrating. Anyways, hope others will read your comment for additional advice on throwing knives. :)

While I am certain that people who seek knife throwing videos do so because they are interesting in knife throwing.... I have seen people ask what is the use in throwing your knife at someone in self defense. You lose your weapon that way! I have an answer for this.... If you can throw a knife, then you can throw knitting needles, you can throw scissors, you can throw pencils.... In other words, you can use items in your environment to slow the advance of an attacker. Nope, a pencil won't kill them if you throw it, but it WILL hurt. And that pain will make an attacker cautious and reluctant to continue, especially if as soon as that pencil sticks them a pair of scissors comes their way! If I had a knife on me at the time of the attack, chances are I'd KEEP the knife and throw environmental objects, saving the knife for in case they manage to close on me. In the mean time, I will also be moving back away from them, again to create space. I have firearms, but I don't have them on me 24/7. But if I can slow the attacker until I can get to that firearm, then that is never a bad thing. And if my throwing things at them causes them to abandon their plans, all the better! Then I don't have to have my handgun taken by police for however long while they do their ballistics tests and all of that, because that is what will happen. There are a lot of places that don't allow firearms so easily... California has increasingly stringent laws regarding firearms for example and many end up not owning a firearm, so it's good to have multiple means of defending yourself. I take Taekwondo, I have done some MMA as well, and I would prefer my self defense to be at a distance if my family's life is at stake. I prefer it because you never know what the other person's ability to fight is like, or if there is a weapon you do not see. Having space means keeping your options open. You can escape if you must, or you can work your way to a better weapon, like a baseball bat. For self defense, knife throwing is just another skill in the many skills one may have. Be a lion! Fight as fiercely as possible with as much violence as possible and even if you don't incapacitate someone, they may decide that it's not worth continuing to attack. Besides, it's just plain fun to try new things :)

    You are doing well.
We practiced throwing homemade throwing knives that I made. Large ones were easier to throw. Outside, we had a plywood backstop, but the target was on a thick slab of redwood burl. Hitting plywood, the knives often bounced back towards us. Way less bounce back from the thick slab (and they stick better and stay there). Softwood end grain works best, like a 3" thick slice cut from the top of a big fresh tree stump. Or the bottom end trim from a log at the sawmill.

I bought a Fury Hell Thrower- made in china.
Has taken quite the impacts and still hasn't broken.
It is good so far for no spin throw, but I would like to do full spins and more so my next buy is going to be a cold steel sport knife.

Great Videos, on a cool thing to know how to do! But, Wear safety glasses! You've heard the phrase, "It only takes once." Well, that's what happened to me. I was the guy that always made people put on safety glasses when they came into the shop, I always wore them when I worked. The one time I didn't put them on to use the wire wheel, a wire flew out and hit my eye dead center, going into my eye a half inch, through the Iris, Cornea and Lens.
They saved it, I can see out of it, but not that well. That wire was in my eye for 4 hours with no pain kilker. That's a long time and a lot of pain to think about how I would never do that again. So protect your eyes from ricocheting knives.
Keep up the Great Work and Training!

I have a set of 9 of those Generic china knives (the symmetrical ones with a little guard) and they're surprisingly sturdy. I haven't broken the tip off of any of them, and I've even thrown them through fenceboard. $15 at a gun show. Great for practice

(As more of a non-spin thrower,) I'm more comfortable with the 12" competition thrower set. I typically throw between 15-30 feet. But if you're a beginner, I'd recommend the Gil Hibben Gen 2, (Large) its my favorite set. They cost 31$ on Amazon OR, if you want to start "small" I'd suggest
"Gil Hibben Gen-X set" (not pro set) for about 25$ If I was to throw any of my knives indoors, it would be these. (But since they're smaller, they're at greater risk with the tip breaking.)

I just started. Like, today. I have a nice camp knife, but the handle is super heavy, and I don't want to take it off. I also have a foldable pocket knife that has like a hollow handle (it's an NRA knife from my dad if u have it it's blue and red with like laser cut stars and stripes and it also has a clip) but its really light and has this thinger that keeps it open. For my first six tries I stuck six from like eight feet.

Good question! To get the burr out, you can place your knife in a vice and just file it away. You can also use a dremmel as well or a grinder. (Also it's best to not throwing all your knives at the same target/bullseye.) Best of luck and thank you for subbing!

As a child we used to plane a game we called chicken with knives. We would stand 3' apart and throw the knife as close as we could to the other persons foot. Yes sometimes we got stabbed in the foot. But that was better than being called chicken :) lol we also played a game called root the peg. We would put a small wood peg in the dirt, then we would play a knife game where you had to do tricks like flip the knife off of each finger and get it to stick in the dirt. Who ever lost that game had to get the peg out of the dirt with their mouth. :) That is what life was like in a small town :) lol

    • @Xolette
      @Xolette  10 ปีที่แล้ว

The best throwing knives are mostly made in either US (but have to be made in the USA, not just sold there), and europe has a nice history of knife throwing as well, though it's illegal in some european countries. It's best to buy several and test them out, you can't really tell which one suits you better till you've tried them. There are different designs, different weight balance, etc...

LOL I also got those small throwing spades at home, I use them to cut my sandwiches, when I buy bread + something to put on it. They're prefectly legal, because of their size, however they're not good throwing knives, not because of the size, but because of their weight. I can throw these small ones in no spin up to 5 m max, but they're so small they won't do much damage. I find these perfect as concealed weapons for hand to hand combat, if you know what you're doing.

I haven’t bought a pair yet but I practice mainly with large kitchen knives (stick great and really good no spin but terrible design for throwing in general since they’re light and the blade is really thin and wide) but butter knives I use all the time for practicing technique the only problem is they don’t stick very well and honestly no spin works ok but I can stick a half spin every time which I can’t do with any of the different kitchen knives I’ve tried. Regardless I need to buy a set of proper knives
