Chapter 27: Arthur Huntingdon goes way too far in his flirtation with Annabella Lowborough. This behavior is odious to Lord Lowborough and makes Helen feel literally sick. Hargraves sees Helen's distress and offers her wine and his companionship but she refuses both. When Arthur realizes how wretched Helen is, he gets down on his knees to ask forgiveness, but he is jesting and laughing. Helen asks if he wishes to lose her love. He sees she is serious and vows to reform. He apologizes in earnest. He says it's because he drank too much wine. Helen tells him he drinks too much lately.
The next day Annabella appears miffed because Huntingdon isn't flirting with her anymore. She had liked the sport. Helen wishes there were a third female in the house as she is often forced to be with Annabella, while the men are out hunting. Annabella needles Helen, saying that Arthur sure drank much wine! She also infers that Helen must have given him quite the scolding last night.
Chapter 28: It is Christmas time - one year after Helen's marriage to Huntingdon, and she is now a mother to a baby boy named Arthur. She is overjoyed with her baby. Huntingdon is jealous of the attentions Helen pays to the baby. He calls his son an idiot and says a baby cannot love him or even its mother. He is even uncomfortable holding the baby.
