The Tenant of Wildfell Hall Chap 45 Reconciliation

Gilbert has been writing this whole story within a story to Jack Halford. Gilbert is very happy and relieved that Helen is not guilty (as he had supposed) of having a secret romance with Frederick Lawrence, now that he knows Frederick is her brother!
He feels shame for misjudging Helen and for attacking Lawrence. Gilbert's earnest wish is to see Helen as soon as possible and to explain his error and beg her forgiveness. He goes. She forgives him. She asks him to forgive her for hiding her true story from him. He, of course, forgives. Helen then tells Gilbert they must never meet again! Gilbert is unable to accept this harsh edict. He argues saying she has the right to see him since Huntingdon has been unfaithful and is therefore not her husband. She is unconvinced of his arguments and states that if he comes again, she will be forced to flee immediately, and has nowhere she can go. As it is, she is planning to move. She feels unsafe with her hiding place at Wildfell Hall. Helen admits to Gilbert, in her way, that she loves him, and that they can correspond with each other by letter as friends once the ardor of their love has died down a bit - in six months. The two of them embrace and he leaves the house.
Later that evening, Gilbert visits Lawrence in his home, sick in his bed, to apologize for attacking him. He explains his reasoning. Frederick Lawrence forgives him. He asks Gilbert to come back and visit him. Gilbert is eager for the relationship since it would only be through Frederick that he would be able to get any information or communication regarding Helen. Lawrence - who himself cannot be seen going to Wildfell Hall too often, for fear of suspicion, since nobody knows he is her brother - writes a letter to Helen and entrusts Gilbert to post it. Gilbert does this favor for Lawrence.
