Sony 16-55mm f2.8 almost never leaves my a6600 and it covers about the same range as the Sigma. But if I would buy my first lens for Sony aps-c today I think I would go with the new Tamron 17-70mm f2.8 because of the lower price and the VC stabilization (Vibration Compensation).
I bought this one and the Tamron 17-28mm and I can confirm, the sigma 24-70 really is the perfect lens for my A7SIII. It’s what I use all the time. I agree with you 💯
When I need maximum versatility a 24-70 f/2.8 is the goto lens for me. You can vlog with it, shoot street at 35mm or 50mm, grab intimate closeups at 70mm. It’s a great lens to tell a story with and can be supplemented on either end as needed.

@@dunnadidit I got the 24-105 as my first and all-around lens for my new Sony a7 IV, but it helps that it was discounted to just under £1000 and also gives cashback once registered. f2.8 would have been amazing, but I figure that the primes I get will likely end up being pricey outside of the given range, say a 20mm and 135mm at f1.8. the idea was also that I could cover some tight portrait lengths without needing to switch to an additional lens.

Yes. I got my Tamron new for 650€. The Sigma has always been over 1100€. For me the 24 vs 28 (and arguably better bokeh) is not worth spending 450€. Better to use that money on a longer prime to complement the 28-75.
I have the 24-105 and its great as a walk-around / hiking lens and is very sharp and the IS allows quite good handheld down to around 1/3s. I bought a second hand Tamron 28-75 for inside work along with the 55 and 85 1.8 primes. If the Sigma had been around when I got my kit I may have gone that way though!

Not quite sure what that means for longevity, image quality or weather sealing. I checked my GM and after 4 years of use, I don’t see any dust in the lens element. FYI, GM’s go for around $1800 on the used market, so it gets closer to Sigma in price if you go that route.
I have this lens for my Sigma FP and it damn near never leaves my camera. Because of the near linear settings I can attached a wireless follow focus on it and it is flawless. Love this lens!

I can help with 3rd issue in this lens - it doesn't have stabilisation built in. I had Sigma 18-35 f1.8 for my APSC camera. Great lens for photo and video, but have the same tree problems. So I switched to FF to have option to buy more pricey, but better lenses.
Great tips! and thorough pros and cons! I have the Tamron, because size is a huge factor for me. I usually just rock the 35mm 2.8 for personal stuff, and the 28-75 for client work and a canon 17-40 for when I need to go really wide. Clearly I go for cheap and easy, but you make some good arguments to step it up!
Just upgraded from APSC. This Sigma was on my mind, but since I'm gearing more towards hiking/traveling I went with the Tamron 28-200. No constant aperture, but good overall sharpness and greaaat versatility
Yeah, save a little weight if you’re going hiking! I made the mistake of taking all my heaviest lenses up Ha-Ling peak last year in Banff and it was not a smart decision!
I like your on camera style! You make it very easy to understand for a neophyte! I hope you can provide some guidance because I’m stuck in an indecision cyclone. I know that I am going to purchase a Sony Alpha A7C. I plan on using it for TH-cam (primarily studio setup) but also for photos. I’m 90% sold on this lens, but is it the best for a studio setting?
Honestly, I flip between my 24-70 and my 16-35 in my tiny little bedroom studio. The 16-35 is nice because my space is a bit tight... but I often find that I’m at 24 or even 35mm so then the 24-70 could have worked. It’s a tough call without knowing your space but the 24-70 is great for MOST setups.
Thanks so much!! Are you talking about image stabilization on this lens? Unfortunately it doesn’t have it. Many full frame e mount lenses don’t, I think mostly because the full frame e mount bodies have ibis.
Yo Dunna!! Finally got my A7IV and need to replace kit lens - is there any risk Sigma releases a new compact version of this lens to try and compete with GM II? I didn’t think lenses got updates that frequently.
Thanks, Dunna. I’ll be going for the newer Tamron 28-75 VXD just because of the weight. I want one lens to rule them all, this one came in at a really close second. I’m eyeing off a Sony a7iv to replace my ancient canon 350d, so can only justify one lens. Great video, as always
Awesome video and I totally agree about the 24-70 range. I have the Zeiss F4 version and really like the small size and weight with the OSS built in. Could be sharper but whatever. It works for me! Plus with the ability to go into APSC mode on a lot of Sony bodies you can get to 105 without sacrificing much on video.
Thanks for this video Dunna. I’m waiting for the A74 and I was already convinced this would be the first lens for Sony full frame and you just reconfirmed my decision. Great video!
Hi Dunna Thanks for the great video! really love the quality of it. I just bought the Sony Alpha 7 IV and two of my major use cases are shooting video courses in my small home studio ( video would be quite similar to you ) and second use case is for my new born baby and family photos, and may be sometime try some event or landscape photography. So i am confused between zoom lens, Sigma 24-70 f - 2.8 vs prime lens, Sony FE 35mm F1.4 GM. What i know is for studio / youtube videography and for small spaces prime lens is the way to go but after watching your video i am thinking may be Sigma 24-70 would be more versatile. Not sure, May be you can share your advice. Cheers!
I bought the Gen 1 Tamron 1 for the E mount and the Same Sigma for my L mount Leica SL-2 since its 47mp and Tamron don't do L mount. For the money I saved on E mount I paired the Tamron with the G-master 24mm f1.4. I get a lot of use indoor with the much faster F stop. Also, the GM is the best 24mm that I ever used and its tiny.
Kindly let me know which lens is best like tamron 28-75mm 2.8 or Sigma 24-70mm 2.8, I have ronin sc gimbal and personally I would like to go with Sigma, please suggest
I use the fudge out of this lens. Got a great deal on it too. I paired it with my A7R IV and did my buddy's graduation shoot with it and he was very happy.
Recently brought A7iii + Sony 85 f1.8 What should be my next lens? For weddings + Product B rolls. • Sony 20 f1.8 • Sony 35 f1.8 • Tamron 17 - 28 f2.8 • Sony 16 - 35 f4
I got the sigma 24-70 as my very first Mirrorless lens to my very first mirrorless camera, which is the Sony A7Riii and I’ve been super happy with what I got. Best decision I’ve ever done
@@dunnadidit Yea! Your video, alongside others that i've watched, helped me decide on the sigma 24-70 as my lens of choice going full mirroless now. Much thanks for the videos!
If I didn't have the advantage of knowing someone who works for Sony which got me a great deal on Sony lenses, I probably would have purchased the Sigma 24-70 as my second lens (first lens was 55mm 1.8). Coming from Nikon DSLRs, I owned the Sigma 24 1.4 Art lens and I absolutely loved it. Because of the discount I had and what I generally like to shoot (cityscapes and landscapes), I knew that the lens for me was the Sony 24-105 as it just meant that I had way more versatility and that I didn't need the 2.8 as much and f/4 was perfectly fine. It enabled me to have a pretty light and versatile gear setup for travel which was the A7III, the 24-105 and a 55mm 1.8 and that kept my camera bag light and enabled me to shoot most situations.
Great minds thing alike! This is THE lens I bought when i moved up to a Sony a7Riii. It has served me VERY well. I'm especially impressed with the macro-like capabilities!
ABSOLUTLEY Agree. I use a Tamron 24-70mm G2....If I could only have one, this would be it. And, I have an M50 for my compact Travel Cam, so I get that little higher Telephoto range when I use it.
Stupid question but does Sigma and Tamron make lenses that fit both APS-C and Full Frame? Or they have a letter in the name we should be looking out for full frame and cropped sensors?
They both make both! Sigmas apsc designation is DC and full frame is DG. I don’t know that Tamron has anything specific other than if you go to the product page and look for that difference.
Dunna, I like your passion on this Sigma lens. I'm about to purchase the Sony a7 IV, my 1st mirrorless, and have been going crazy over what high quality economical single lens to get. Have you solved my question with this video? I'm a hobbyist still photographer and want to start video shooting, 50% indoors, 25% outdoors/gimbal, 25% stills (the reason for the hybrid a7 IV). In my video inexperience I thought I needed a 16-35 zoom but you seem satisfied with 24mm for v-logging. This video was made a year ago... in Feb 2022 is this Sigma still the one you recommend or is there a better new one for the a7 IV? Also, if it is a full frame lens, why does Sigma call it an E mount instead of a FE mount? Found your videos from Gerald Undone, and subscribed. Thank you.
Hey Jer! Yeah I still think this would be my recommendation if you are only going to get ONE lens to start. And with the a7iv you get even a little more out of it with crop mode. 24mm is cool for vlogging for me but that’s a personal thing as well and I’ve got long arms so that’s something to keep in mind. As for why sigma calls it E instead of FE, technically all e-mount lenses have the same mount… so they are all E-Mount. But Sony just differentiates the full frame ones by adding the F, sigma just says outright “full frame E mount” instead of having a shorthand. Hope that helps!
The Sony 24-105mm f/4 came bundled with my camera. I like it. I use it when hiking and might have a situation where I bang the lens around. I bought the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 about a year later because it matched up almost spec for spec with its Sony counterpart for half the price. I use it when I go out hunting for pretty flowers and for street photography.
Great vid mate! Thanks for the info. Just bought the A7III recently and now I know what my next purchase will be. Already got the 16-35 f4 for the wide end, was thinking of getting the 24-105 next but maybe the sigma might be a better play. Quality content as always Dunna!
Thanks for watching! I have a couple friends who swear by the 24-105 but like I mentioned in the video, I'd rather keep my "all around" lens 24-70 and just use a 70-200 for that longer stuff (or, lately, a 100-400)
I'm about to get my first full frame camera, the Sony A7 iii . Yes its almost 5 years old, but as a hobbiest I think it's still very good option. Now looking for my first lens and it's definitely between the Sigma or Tamron. Those dust thingies are worrying though? I see it everywhere on reviews. You don'y expect this from a premium lens right? Im more leaning into the Sigma than Tamron, but the dust thingies are scary when you put so much money down haha.
I gots me the tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 di iii rxd for $700 Canadian after haggling online. With the A7c kit lens, I have no regrets. The 24mm comparison and OSS leave me licking my chops for another lens. Thanks for the perspective.
So, normally this would be injected with coffee.. today it was with dessert and I wasn’t disappointed. So much great info. As some who has a 16-35, 24-70 & 70-200, I completely agree that the 24-70 is such a solid less. Thank you Dunna for just being awesome and sharing such great info!
I had the standard Sony 24-70 OSS kit lens - which is a good lens and a GREAT deal for the price. I bought the Sony/Zeiss 24-70 and even though it was a bit better, I sold it because I didn't think it was worth the extra cost for just a bit better. Then I went through those inexpensive wide angle Rokinons. They were okay. I was debating what to get next and I thought hard about the Tamron but I went with the Sony 24-105. It is an amazing lens. I, too, like a recent comment below would have been interested in a comparison between the 24-105 and the Sigma.
I like your honest opinion always, I was going through the lense choosing challenges, but thinking about the weight issue with dgi rsc2! I am using sony a7c. I am a blogger. What's your opinion!
Got this one during sale times during the holidays. I used it for Christmas family portraits with Godox flashes - and got stunning results! :) Happy with this lens. This is my first 24-70 2.8. When I was shooting with my old Canon DSLR - I couldn't afford their 2.8's!
So far I only have experience with Sigma's ASPC lenses, I have the 16mm f1.4 and 56mm f1.4, and I can absolutely say that Sigma Makes the best lenses for the money. Amazing clarity and colors and the build quality is always solid. I will definitely be purchasing this lens when I upgrade to a full frame body. Great video and information!
3rd con could be the missing stabilisation in the lense. I bought the 24-105 becaurse of stabilisation and the extra reach. Instead of 70-200mm I bought the Sigma 100-400mm. And when I have saved up a little more money, I buy the Sigma 14-24mm. After that I have 14-400mm i 3 lenses
Great video! I've own this lens for a couple of months now and I absolutely love it. I shot a few events with it (wished there were more, but the covid situation got worse in my country and events were canceled) and paired with the A7III this lens is fast and sharp. A bit heavy if you're in to video production, but for photography that doesn't really bother me. I haven't really noticed dust under the front element, but then again I use a filter to protect it. Overall I think the sigma 24-70 is an amazing lens, a great all-around for everyday use.
@@uniqprod4944 Yep. A few months after I commented here I noticed some dust right under the front element. :( I don't know if Sigma has a recall or something for lenses with this problem. It doesn't really bother me, I usually shoot between f2.8 - 4 and I don't see it on my images. But it's there, and I know it :))
Fantastic video - cheers Dunna! I’ve been wanting to pick up this lens for a while, but it’s just a little bit out of my budget at the moment - need to get saving! Currently using a Tamron 20mm f/2.8 and the classic Sony FE nifty fifty. Both nice lenses, but not amazing for video. I imagine this lens kills it for video! Keep up the great work my man! 👏

I bought this lens a week before Christmas and absolutely love it.
Nice!!
I can help with 3rd issue in this lens - it doesn't have stabilisation built in.
I had Sigma 18-35 f1.8 for my APSC camera. Great lens for photo and video, but have the same tree problems. So I switched to FF to have option to buy more pricey, but better lenses.
Ah yes. For apsc users that could be an issue. Luckily all the full frame cameras have ibis in the Sony lineup!
Great tips! and thorough pros and cons! I have the Tamron, because size is a huge factor for me. I usually just rock the 35mm 2.8 for personal stuff, and the 28-75 for client work and a canon 17-40 for when I need to go really wide. Clearly I go for cheap and easy, but you make some good arguments to step it up!
Yeah if size is a thing the Tamron is the way to go!
Absolutely! I have the same one and it's perfect!
So happy with my combo of a7s3 and this lens.
wow, you deserve a lot more subscribers your videos are fantastic
It’s incredible. I agree
Nice review thanks! And the auto focus compared to the Tamron?
I just got this lens paired with the a7siii as my main camera in my cycling classes! Love this lens!!
That's so awesome! Glad you love it!
Dunna! Another informative, helpful, and interesting video. Wondering still about image stabilization. Salutes, brother! 💛🙏🏼
Thanks so much!! Are you talking about image stabilization on this lens? Unfortunately it doesn’t have it. Many full frame e mount lenses don’t, I think mostly because the full frame e mount bodies have ibis.
@@dunnadidit Ah, that makes sense. Thanks much.
My pleasure!
I’m playing with the new Tamron right now and it’s great! You’ll love it! I’ve got a video coming out about it next week
@@dunnadidit does the new tamron dethrone the sigma as recommendation?
Great review, thanks a lot!
Totally still a solid lens! And much more compact too!
I also rock the sigma 24-70 and I love it. Would you say the OSS isn’t as worth as much as a 2.8?
If you’re shooting with a Sony full frame camera that has ibis, I wouldn’t sweat oss too much. It can help, but I’d rather have f2,8
The video I needed to show my wife so I can get a new lens. Thanks Dunna!
LOL hey now! I hope your wife doesn't hate me.
my wife doesn't need to know this info, especially the price tag :p
Lol 😂
Thanks for this video Dunna. I’m waiting for the A74 and I was already convinced this would be the first lens for Sony full frame and you just reconfirmed my decision. Great video!
Heck yes! Thanks for watching!
I get a lot of use indoor with the much
faster F stop. Also, the GM is the best 24mm that I ever used and its tiny.
Kindly let me know which lens is best like tamron 28-75mm 2.8 or Sigma 24-70mm 2.8, I have ronin sc gimbal and personally I would like to go with Sigma, please suggest
Sigma 24-70
Thanks! What about the new Sigma 28-70mm f2.8 Cont.? What do you think?
I use the fudge out of this lens. Got a great deal on it too. I paired it with my A7R IV and did my buddy's graduation shoot with it and he was very happy.
How do you get the fudge back in the lens?

Recently brought A7iii + Sony 85 f1.8
What should be my next lens? For weddings + Product B rolls.
• Sony 20 f1.8
• Sony 35 f1.8
• Tamron 17 - 28 f2.8
• Sony 16 - 35 f4
Personally, I'm a fan of zooms, I'd go with either the 16-35 or the 17-28.
I got the sigma 24-70 as my very first Mirrorless lens to my very first mirrorless camera, which is the Sony A7Riii and I’ve been super happy with what I got. Best decision I’ve ever done
Awesome!
@@dunnadidit Yea! Your video, alongside others that i've watched, helped me decide on the sigma 24-70 as my lens of choice going full mirroless now. Much thanks for the videos!
That’s great to know! Thanks for watching!
I was about to buy the G Master version but i was really worried about the cost! Now i got it ! Great advice Dunna !
Nice, Spot on! this is my go to lens.
Awesome!
ABSOLUTLEY Agree. I use a Tamron 24-70mm G2....If I could only have one, this would be it. And, I have an M50 for my compact Travel Cam, so I get that little higher Telephoto range when I use it.
Nice!!
@@dunnadidit Really helpful, thanks for responding. On a weekend even!
How is the video auto focus compared to the Tamron? I find the two Tamron 17-28 and 28-75 to be great for video work with auto focus.
Totally solid in my experience. I haven't done a side by side comparison but I haven't really noticed any practical difference.
If you buy it new, the new revisions have the dust issue resolved. I bought one a month and some ago and it's clean.
I gots me the tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 di iii rxd for $700 Canadian after haggling online. With the A7c kit lens, I have no regrets. The 24mm comparison and OSS leave me licking my chops for another lens. Thanks for the perspective.
I do love Sigma lenses. My fave is my sigma 35mm f1.2. Incredible Bokeh, close focusing, fast auto focus motors. Less coma issues than Sony/Zeiss 35.
Nice!!
Haha what did you have for dessert?
@@dunnadidit Cookies...fresh, homemade cookies.
Oh damn!
I, too, like a recent comment below would have been interested in a comparison between the 24-105 and the Sigma.
that sigma lens is my favorite too. only had it for a few months but its been my best lens purchase by far!
So good right?
Dunna Did It so good! Thanks for the informative video man!
My pleasure! Thanks for watching!
I like your honest opinion always, I was going through the lense choosing challenges, but thinking about the weight issue with dgi rsc2! I am using sony a7c. I am a blogger. What's your opinion!
It might be tight, I think the rsc2 might just barely handle that but I’m not super confident.
Great video, how about this lens in the A7C?
Great review! Got mine w the A7C, adding 14-24mm 2.8 in near future!
Agree fully, this is such a versatile lens. Great video dude, happy new year.
Thanks brother!! Happy new year!
Got this one during sale times during the holidays. I used it for Christmas family portraits with Godox flashes - and got stunning results! :) Happy with this lens. This is my first 24-70 2.8. When I was shooting with my old Canon DSLR - I couldn't afford their 2.8's!
YES !! I absolutely agree!! I bought that lens with my Sony a7iii. It's my first lens too!! and my only one LOL
Haha I rarely take it off! Except to switch it to my other camera body lol.
Very informative. Thanks a bunch for this video
Going to make the switch from canon apsc to sony full frame and this is the first lens I was thinking of getting. Versatility plus low aperture = WIN
Awesome!!
I just picked up the Sigma 17-50 2.8 for Canon APS-C and it has been great so far. Trying to get over my need for fast primes haha
That’s dope!
The guy on Kelby One says use 150-200 f2..8 or 85mm f1.8 for portraits. What do you think ?
3rd con could be the missing stabilisation in the lense. I bought the 24-105 becaurse of stabilisation and the extra reach. Instead of 70-200mm I bought the Sigma 100-400mm. And when I have saved up a little more money, I buy the Sigma 14-24mm. After that I have 14-400mm i 3 lenses
It’s built into the camera
Exact same choices I have made!
The lenses you have dont have f2.8, (Accept the one you want to buy) so they have good Zoom but Not that good in lightning.
Hi,
With the Tamron 35~150 shortly being released, do you still think 24-70 is the way to go?
Haha I knew it was this lens when I saw the thumbnail on Twitter. I just got this lens before Christmas. I love it so far!
Haha I knew a few people would recognize it even if I took off the branding (which i did lol )
How do you keep your lenses so clean
Great video! I've own this lens for a couple of months now and I absolutely love it. I shot a few events with it (wished there were more, but the covid situation got worse in my country and events were canceled) and paired with the A7III this lens is fast and sharp. A bit heavy if you're in to video production, but for photography that doesn't really bother me. I haven't really noticed dust under the front element, but then again I use a filter to protect it. Overall I think the sigma 24-70 is an amazing lens, a great all-around for everyday use.
Glad to hear you’ve had a great experience with it! Also, good to know about the no dust problem
@@dunnadidit I'll double check tomorrow in daylight to see if there's any dust under the front element.
@@simonastanciu29 is there any dust now?
@@uniqprod4944 Yep. A few months after I commented here I noticed some dust right under the front element. :( I don't know if Sigma has a recall or something for lenses with this problem. It doesn't really bother me, I usually shoot between f2.8 - 4 and I don't see it on my images. But it's there, and I know it :))
Purchased this lens as my first lens last week 👏
Thank you so much for this review!! Definitely buying this one when the a7IV comes out!
Nice!
Yeah, it’s right in that range where it’s not a super expensive lens but it’s definitely the kind of thing you still have to save up for! Sounds like you’re building a kit of solid primes though!
