This is a REVIEW of the Sigma 24-70 2.8 DG DN II Lens for Sony E Mount Cameras. I spend a lot of time comparing it Sony's 24-70 2.8 GM II and pose the question....should you not buy the Sony and go with the Sigma? I answer that exact question in this video.

which one are you buying and why???
got a sigma 28-70 2.8, loving it
none because i dont have a camera :(
Sigma 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I still have the old 24-70GM, but hardly use it anymore on the A1 and A9III. Instead, I use the Tamron 35-150, as I found this a more versatile zoom range for concerts and indoor sports.Yes, the 15fps limit is a bit of a bummer. So my trade off is using 1 camera or 2 cameras on an event. Most of the time, I opt for one. If SONY would offer a 35-150, f/ 2-2.8, I would get it without hesitation.
Waiting for the Sony GM 24-70mm f2 😉
No sniff test!!!!!! No wind test!!!!! Without these tests I don’t think I can believe this review!!!!
Clearly a biased sponsored ad
he’s compromised !!
What would sniffing it tell you? 😂 is that a fetish thing
No water proof test either! I like to shoot while I'm swimming!
i don't need it...i don't need it. But I want it
On a serious note: I use the Sigma 24-70 version 1 as a professional concert photographer and haven't had any issues that would give me a reason to upgrade. It's a fantastic lens and because I'm not using a body with more than 15fps (though I'd love to use the a9iii) I don't see a reason to upgrade
I just got one very recently. It seems fine to me, but since you've used it more do you think that the auto focus improvement of the 2nd version would be worth buying another lens for? Also 10% lighter bla bla bla whatever
@@bluwasabi7635 weight difference is negligible. I use 2 A7iv with battery grip, so I don’t really care, if it’s an always on lens on something like the A7c I’d think about the GM2 (but as a hobbyist spending about double the money doesn’t make a lot of sense tbh).
Can’t say anything bad about the AF on the Art v1, there may have been some out of focus shots but that could’ve been the camera as well. Currently the Art v2 is just $200 more than the v1 and I’d spend that money on a lighter and more modern lens, when the price goes down for v1 (or if buying used is an option, I got mine used) I’d recommend v1 more likely over v2.
The only issue from the v1 I know is the dust accumulation under the front glass. Sigma says they have fixed it but I don’t know about that for sure
Cool thumbnails! I love the wide angle distortion from the “camera in your face” perspective. 💯
Thanks for the video Jared. I bought the version 1 off your recommendation and still using it today for jobs. It is my work horse lens ranging from portraits, events, landscapes and even in video production. Always great to save some money.
Lens lock is something I use all the time. Over the year, the lens sags more and more,e specially in event photography setting where you the camera handing off the strap and your movement makes this sag I've noticed on my copy. It might be a different expericen for someone else's usecase but happy they kept it. Great video as always Fro! 🙌
Good review Jared. Thank you
Love those baseball photos.. that font on the Philly jersey is fire.
I absolutely NEED that lock switch on my SIGMA 24-70 f2.8 I. I carry my cam most of the time on a clip on my backpack with the lens facing down. Without that lock switch i'd be having the lens in my way 24/7
I can see that lock switch helping a lot for studio portraiture. I hate double checking I’m at correct focal length!
Thanks for the video. I bought the Sony GM II. I bought it two years ago when it came out to replace my original GM version. The two year earlier availability was key even with its elevated price. Also used to buying Canon L glass even though I’m not a working pro. Have not regretted a single GM or GM II purchase. I prefer to buy once and try to buy the best. Take care.
True. Noone would comeback to query about the lens used when pictures are as similar as Sony GM OSS II
Jared, Do you have a review of the Sony 24-50 f2.8? I have an a7cii and have that lens in order just to keep things small. Just would like you take on that lens. Thanks!
Jared, thank you for review. As owner A7R IVa and 1st gen of Sigma 24-70 I was curious about version 2. Looks fine, is lighter, has aperture ring and lock. But I will stick with my 1st generation because none of improvements are interesting for me :)
Both lens looks good and the Sigma would probably be my pick out of these 2 due to price and me being a hobbist.
Question about FroPack4. Will those eye and skin adaptive presets work in LR Mobile or is it for desktop/laptops only? I do all my editting on my Samsung S23 Ultra at the moment sicne I dont have a computer.
Shooting on the Alpha 1 I'm going with the Sony GM II all day because I'm not giving up the capabilities of the a1 in video or photo to save $1k. That being said, I started with the version 1 Sigma and still have it in the case as it's a great lens but where I'm at now there's no need to sacrifice purpose use features to save that little in the long run.
Every time I prepare for a little concert photography, I go thru your low light guide again. Sooo helpful to have some lead clues in mind when I'm in the small concert venues with sub-optimal lighting.
where can I find that low lights for concerts?
For the slot on the hood, can you just buy the Sony hood and put it on the Sigma or won't it fit?
Jared can you get your hands on the new Tamron 28-75 for Nikon to review?
Between Tamron 24-70mm G2 VC and Sigma Art 24-70mm, which would you recommend?.
My main work lens is the Sony 24-70 GM2. It's nearly magic into the sun, and my biggest moneymaker is sunset portraits on the beach.
Gerald Undone showed a better performance for the new sigma during a flair test!
Thanks Fro, as a non professional i was unsure which to get, 24-105, 20-70, gm ii 24-70 or this sigma
I don’t need speed just the ultimate image quality……. Which does great or great enough to sell a print from please Sir?…… shooting on an a7iv (convert from fuji last week) mostly landscapes wide open townscapes, few portraits plus a little video but rarely video
Is there a video about the difference between this particular lens of Sigma V1 vs the V2? thanks!
Hi jared, did you happen to compare the distortion between sony vs sigma at 24mm?
That 24mm portrait was nice
Nice review
thank u your content is best and so help full for me thanks bro
Does this Vii feel better on camera? I have the version one and it feel so front heavy and bulky. Wondering if this one is more “centered.” Thanks
Already own the 24-70 f2.8 "mark 1" Sigma lens. While super compelling, likely will keep rocking the original as the cost difference won't yield a significant image difference. That and the resale in the used market has likely dropped with the new lens offering being the desirable one.
Not a dig, genuinely curious why you shot that commentator at 1/800 with an ISO of 1600? Was it just a heat of the moment thing and didn’t bring the shutter down? Or a reason to it?
I think one of the better parts of the video is Jared's entire portrait discussion.
Both of these seem like absolute beasts when it comes to versatility and to me that is a strong selling point on both sides.
Great review as usual 👌🏾
As long as they address the dust issue with the version one I’ll be happy
I bought of them and they were both full of dirt. Returned them.
If I shot high FPS with the A9 or A1 you get the GM all day, but if you dont then you might want to consider the Sigma Art.
If you use it all the time then maybe get the GM too since its lighter and slightly better AF.
Good review, but what about color? Sigma lenses I've used in a past seemed a bit greenish compared to Sony..
I already have some Sony lenses and "linear manual focus" on new GM II series is a real benefit for video shooting.
Now the question is... what to choose between the Sony I and the Sigma II?
Does it lens creep on a backpack clip?
what about the dust resistance ????
At Sigma 24 70 no1 was very easy to dust dots to came inside the glass, like ridiculous easy. Like , one walk at the park was enough..
I'm just here to find out if its a dust collector like its predecessor
bro i love you hair style ❤
I didn't know there was a new version coming out! I got the original based on Fros review and love it.
i agree, yes, that brand name, top of the line, is a must for the client. coz they don’t know and they want to be sure. save your time for the debate and explanation. just like you are in a suit.
Will there be a sigma 70 - 200 f2.8 2? I'm currently looking for that kind of zoom if there is one to come out I may hold off until it arrives.
Prob not anytime soon, and by that I mean a couple years, as the 70-200 f2.8 sigma for Sony came out in December 2023
Hello, if you a Lens Sony 24-105 F4 do you buy this New sigma's Lens?
I photograph weddings and I was hoping Sigma would have an answer to the v2 Gmaster. I’m a little disappointed that the weight is almost similar.
lets hope they can keep the dust out of it. I bought and returned 2 of the V1 lenses for dust issues.
I am a Canon "lifer". But these quality Sigma e-mount lenses have me thinking it may be time to pick up an A7 iv to test the Sony waters and the huge e-mount lens ecosystem. Loved the GOT references. Ha! Ha!
I wonder if this lens focuses faster and better on Sigmas own native L mount than on 3rd party Sony bodies.
Jared let's test GFX 100 II with 500mm F5.6 :D Can't wait till moment when u gonna do this :)
Jared, my Sony 24-70mm GM2 does lens creep. I wish it had a locking mechanism.
Has it always done that?
Always the second place I run for a new lens review. I sold my version one last year and went to a 35mm gm and kinda miss a mid range zoom. Still have to decide if I want this or go with the big chonky boy Tamron 35-150.
If you don’t shoot sports consistently then the 24-70 would be the best option imo
A 24-70 is a more versatile run n gun lens. I have a 28-70mm lens and it pretty much always stays on my camera unless I want the most background compression or shoot wildlife.
I got the Sony 24-70 GM2 because I had tons of events to shoot this month. This Sigma is not expected until May 31 and is too late for graduations and other end of school year activities.
i like a lot of the 24mm shots
Rather curious how this compares to the Tamron 28-75 G2
So photography wise sigma and Sony are the exact same, now time to go to Jared undone and view his review for the video front which will make my ultimate decision
If you compare it with the Sony 20-70mm F4 which is the same price- which one would you recommend?
sigma for sure, 2.8 aperture is game changer
The version I had huge dust issues, is this fixed?
Later production version 1 lenses from Sigma seemed to be fixed. Hopefully this one is not affected.
Found the same.
@@briandoyal7338 I got my replacement from Amazon in mid/late 2022 and still have issues with dust. Nothing visible in photos, but not great as well
Tamron's 28-75mm f2.8 version II! For $350 less.....bam!
When does this release? I just ordered the 35mm 1.4 GM and I’m thinking about canceling it for this sigma version 2
May 31
@@GuitarRJP you’re amazing. Thank you for your response. I’ll keep the 35mm. Maybe get the sigma next month.
Need a tamron 17-70 review
I can have the 24-70/2.8 and 70-200/2.8 from Sigma for the price of Sony's 24-70/2.8. I never use 30fps. It's a no brainer.
No sniff test? No wind test? How do I truly know if I should buy this lens without those tests?
Oh man. How did I forget that
You didn't talk about vignetting at 24mm. That is usually an issue with generic lenses. Thanks.
Non issue. Most of the companies are leaving it to lens correction software.
I literally just purchased the original Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art, and the return window closed a few days ago. Ugh
wish they had made the previous size but f2
i don’t think 24-70 2.8 is a starter lens 😂 it’s still expensive and i’d say it’s more of a do it all pro lens
definitely not a starter lens, whoever says that is high as a kite.
If I was looking for a 24-70 on Sony A I'd be all over that v1 if it went on sale.
If this lens had 30fps I'd already pre order it. As a sports photographer I have to go with the Sony GM II which sucks.
BROOOOOOOOOKLYN!!! Great Preset!
I'm waiting for a 20-75mm f2-3.5 sth...
For video work, no focus breathing compensation and no linear focusing is a no go.
this lens has linear focus
i wish manufacturers stopped making lenses that suck in dust. i liked the Sony 24-70 GM 1st Gen lens cause it was internal zooming instead of telescoping zoom.
I used Sigma Gen 1 24-70 for a few years. Later I received a gift of the 24-70 GM ii and the stabilization for video is far superior.
These lenses do not have optical stabilization though, so not sure why they would be different.
@@earthtoandy_because Sony only supports standard stabilization for 3rd party lenses not the extra stabilization option.
I got the first version of the Sigma 28-70 2.8 - for $899 - apparently $100 off. Now I know why. The guy at the shop didn't tell me the version 2 was out. Looks like the version two is going for about $1200. Either one would be fine so why not save a few pennies. I really like your distinction regarding pros vs hobbyist. Hobbyists should certainly go for the Sigma lens since the differences are _so_ minor. Working _pro_ - sure, go for the Sony if your budget can afford it.
There’s still only one version of the Sigma 28-70. (28 on the wide end, not 24.)
@@kevenspargo6829 Yeah, I have the 28-70 - I didn't realize there was a 24-70.
How am i going to know if this is a solid lens without a Wind Tunnel/Sniff Test !!!! 😊
When Sigma will release the same lense for Nikon Z mount...
freakin canon man lets gooo we need sigma rf
Are you shooting with pre production camera hmmm why u mentioned that u shoot with rf lenses instead of r5?
The problem with the sigma for me is the zoom ring, I can't deal with the zoom rotating to the opposite side... It's a muscle memory thing that keeps me back from buying the sigma...
No wind tunnel test?!?
11:07 Except for the Tamron 150-500 ;)
@12:01 The kKkid. THE KID
Why is your shutter speed so high shooting in the room 😂
Damn these sigma lenses makes me want to switch from Canon to panasonic or Sony.. why pay a Fortune for fast rf lenses when you can pay much less for lenses that Will give you pleasing results
I'm waiting to switch from my 5D mark III to R5/6 for when the sigma lenses are going to be available for that same reason
Sony gang all day baby. But fortunately for you. Canon just announced the will allow 3rd party lenses. These will be coming to canon soon too.
@@huntercoleman8036 unfortunately only for crop cameras . Hopefully they will let sigma and tamron in but I think it will take a while
@@rafaelmartinvannostrand2084 that’s funny so do I , still shoot with 5d3s as a side gig but will soon upgrade one if my sigmas work great with ef to rf adapter. So expensive to buy rf L glasses in Sweden
@@huntercoleman8036 yeahhhh, I saw the announcement. But until the lenses are available and reviewed... I'm stuck with my 5D mark III wich btw... it's a hell of a camera, it's better camera than I'm a photographer, to be fair
For me it's all dependent on the in-camera corrections are substantially superior with the Sony native lenses. For green screen, this matters as much as having a good low-light sensor. I went with the Sony 10-20mm f/4 PZ G lens with the Sony 18-105 f/4 OSS PZ G lens and 7.5mm 7Artisans fisheye lens win FX30. For video, that is your best budget options. You can then get the FX3 with Tamron 17-28 and 28-75mm f/2.8 lens. with those cameras you can meet 90% of your needs and you fill most other needs with some Sirui or 7Artisans cine and Blazar anamorphic lenses and some vintage lenses. The other 10% you rent because it's a theft risk. Capping your camera equipment at $20K at your house should be a priority as that is enough of a risk.
Why do you think that only Sony GM fit for professional work for the money? Why Sigma is not for professional work?
Easy. Sony splashes more money on PR.
They both are but the Sony has faster tracking and auto focus, so it is better in real time.
@@steves12strings 💯 👍
breathing comp, faster burst, better AF and weather sealing.
@@RealThore Sigma has 0 focus breathing and has weather sealing. Burst is a Sony limitation as we all know.
Hi Jared, there a rumour that Canon may be looking at a monthly AI subscription for there new cameras. Have you heard any rumours coming out of Canon about this?
That Star of David made me smile. Thanks, Jared.
The bit were you says ours don’t suck. There are some ok presets out there but most ruin photos.
Not dropping any money on any new lenses like these , they are Boring ! … not you Jared , the lens manufacturers keep remaking the same lens with slight variations. Really wish there it would have been innovative such as 20- 70mm f2 . Next thing you know , Sony will drop the hammer with an f2 standard zoom . In either case it would have to compete with the Tamron 35-150 f2/2.8 , now that was innovation !!
I like Sigma lenses but they are simply not as good as the GM lenses in my opinion, it could have been the copies I have had but I wouldnt buy them again unless they come out with something I want that Sony dont have. I do have the Sony GM ii and love it.
Dang I just got the Sigma 24-70mm 1.5 months ago and paid full price (€1199) and now the mark II is out and I'm feeling like I missed out big time. Honestly considering to call up the store to perhaps make a deal once the mark II is on the market, sadly it's past the 30 days return rate or else I would've done that....
Wondering if it's worth doing that or am I just beating myself up on something insignificant? It's mostly that I still paid full price that's getting me...
shitty situation.
just enjoy the lens u own and let it be
Nikon pls let Sigma back on the lens route for Z cameras.
I wish Sony would just make a 35-150 already!!
Well the Tamron version doesn't really have any issues does it? Apart from the size/weight and 15 FPS limitation.
@@megamastah and lack of internal zoom, slower autofocus and support for focus breathing compensation.
I just bought my version 1 revision 2 like 6 months ago 😡
Sony 24-50 or Sigma 24-70 ?
The more lens test I watch the more the question rises: are there any bad lenses out there?
The Next months will be very fun för us photographers , xt50, x100sii, gf500, Canon r1 r5ii and 3 more cameras , sigma lenses etc etc
If you know what you are doing no version matters... this is for the amateurs who think they will take better photos if they have the latest.
Both made in the Sigma factory???
Do you ever get tired of making lens reviews and wish you could follow your dreams to become a dancer?
