Fungus Among Us: Diagnosing And Treating Yeast Problems

  • Yeast overgrowth, including but not limited to candida, is quite common and can be triggered by a number of things. These include a high-sugar diet; impaired immunity; use of drugs, like antibiotics, birth control pills, estrogen, and steroids; and psychological stress. The symptoms of yeast overgrowth vary from person to person and some people may require aggressive treatment, while others many need only simple changes to make a significant difference in their health.
In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. George Papaicolaou to discuss the functional medicine approach to diagnosing and treating yeast imbalance. They also share specific cases in which they have treated patients for candida and other fungal problems.
George Papanicolaou is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Abington Memorial Hospital. He is also an Institute for Functional Medicine Practitioner. Upon graduation from his residency he joined the Indian Health Service. He worked on the Navajo reservation for 4 years at the Chinle Comprehensive Medical Facility where he served as the Outpatient Department Coordinator. In 2000, he founded Cornerstone Family Practice in Rowley, MA. He practiced with a philosophy centered on personal relationships and treating the whole person, not just not the disease. He called that philosophy “Whole Life Wellness”. Over time as the healthcare system made it harder for patients to receive this kind of personal care Dr. Papanicolaou decided a change was needed. He began training in Functional Medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine. In 2015, he established Cornerstone Personal Health - a practice dedicated entirely to Functional Medicine. Dr. Papanicolaou to join The UltraWellness Center in 2017.

I have been diagnosed with intestinal candida using the Organic Acid Test. I don't have any other fungal issues except in my gut. I find my tinnitus is greatly affected by candida along with sore and blurry eyes, but I have yet to hear on the many videos I watch on this topic these being symptoms of candida.
Great info and glad this info is available to those that look for it. ❤

I'm so pleased that you are discussing this very important topic, which is mostly ignored in conventional medicine. It's a very serious topic, not to be ignored! Each year I learn a little more about this topic, it's been such an irritant all my life. It creates imbalance and inflammation in the body. It's very diet influenced and regularly made worse by conventional drugs. I personally believe that Candida can lead to Cancer, Diabetes, Dementia, malabsorption of necessary vitamins and minerals, ... Arthritis and much more. Thank you two for being 'Functional' Doctors.

My father had a lifetime of athletes foot ….then dental problems. He lived until he was 86. However his dental (periodontist)problems was passed down to me as “hereditary”
I decided to fight my dental problems and related my fungal toenail to a gut problem.
I dropped wheat, reduced my sugar (I’ve a really good diet) took probiotics including ones that fought the mutans bacteria used fluoride free toothpaste and tea tree mouth wash along with xylitol Vit D,C and zinc and had INCREDIBLE results!

YES! I agree! My health had failed tremendously no thanks to conventional doctors. I need a functional medical doctor. Can't afford one! So frustrating. Many of my symptoms improved when I went AIP but I still have skin issues, issues with severe brain fog and exhaustion, depression, anxiety....etc the list goes on and they have actually been very debilitating. Haven't been able to hold a job because of them which scares me. Our healthcare system needs a serious revamp! I've had to try and play doctor and treat myself. Yes AIP has helped but I need guidance. Feel like I"m in the dark and videos like this are extremely educational and helpful but I'm so exhausted trying to figure it out on my own. I prefer just going to someone who knows what they are doing so that I can get help. Isn't that what doctors are supposed to be there for??? :(

    • @gaeltoussaint5021
      @gaeltoussaint5021 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Unfortunately it’s not them that has to accept health insurance it’s the fact that most insurance companies don’t view this as substantiated, and legitimate medical care since in many cases it veers from traditional care. It’s a shame

    • @cindy7733
      @cindy7733 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@gaeltoussaint5021 I know this. I've worked in healthcare for over 10 years but these doctors also carry a lot of weight, prestige, and have a platform that they can use to help others. I'm not saying that these specific doctors need to do it, but there are many other functional medical doctors out there who can band together and do something to change the situation. Perhaps they already are doing it. That would be such an enormous blessing for the rest of us who are feeling so horrible physically that their ability to function every day is affected. I'm exhausted. 79 pounds. Weak. Very difficult to work a job consistently when I truly don't feel well and fatigue easily. I eat only organic, AIP diet, and still....I know that food is only one part of the solution. I read and learn about functional medicine voraciously but knowing info is not enough. I need to have heavy metals checked and all other issues checked from celiac. Just so hard when you are trying and trying to do your best and you feel like you're getting nowhere because you are simply trying to work to pay for food.

I was blown away when he mentioned, that this is an autistic thing. I'm an asperger, think I've this yeast for my whole life already. Since I was a child I've had alot of stomach issues.
Nowadays I can't even breath correctly after eating a salad. I'm trained, doing alot of sports, eat mostly just vegetables, no meat, use supplements like minerals and vitamins. I've this pytiriasis versicolor for 15 years now at my chest and shoulders and upper back. Last year I went 24 times to the hospital in an emergency case, cause of hypertensive crisis after eating something with alot of carbohydrates and sugar like cornflakes, I fainted even one time and had blood pressure 210/170 and bpm of 200. The skin under my eyes was deeply black, my skin color was pure white, I couldn't breathe anymore and couldn't talk, I wrote down all my symptoms when I was still able to and opened the door to my apartment so that they could enter when they arrived. Then I fainted and woke up when there were 10 people around me and two doctors.
And they never knew what was happening to me. Tested my heart, my blood, my brain.
Then they told me I've had a panic disorder. I always knew, that I definitely had no panic disorder, because I've been reading more scientific books about disorders than most psychiatrists due to that that is one of my special interests.
I remember that my tongue was always looking like a white chinchilla pelt, all the time my hands were inflated, I couldn't type anymore, muscle and joint aches so hard, that I couldn't walk straight anymore, I must have had looked like a walking robot.
Then they diagnosed me with ADD, bevause my concentration just went away - sometimes I wasn't able to speak, cause I forgot the words.
I never could loose weight, that was weird since I eat so, so less for a 29yo male, instead I gained muscles quickly by going to the gym - it looks weird when you've a Sixpack on a stomach that looks like someone has thrown a gas granade inside, it looks 24/7 like a balloon and make my breathing difficult.
Then the fatigue. Brutal fatigue. Sometimes at work I just fall asleep staring at my screen - then the brain fog. I'm reading an email and think "what the heck is standing there?" when it's just a simple message like "hey, please check XY". In meetings it's the worst, because I just can't hold my head up, it's like there is magnet inside myself of falling asleep, but not asleep, it's more like fainting, it's not like when you're tired, cause you've had not slept much, it's a brutal force making you feel like you will just fall down and faint, no energy anymore, no resources anymore to process any information. I once had to sit in a company meeting and they were talking about me, because I was new and they welcomed me and did all that talking and I just "felt asleep". They shook me, because they thought I was fainted. I then said I've diabetis and my blood sugar has to be low and excused myself to eat something and of course I didn't have diabetis, but what I should have said differently? "hey, sorry guys, I've something maybe, that makes me fall asleep, nothing about you introducing me officially to the company".
My girlfriend told me I was depressive when I really wasn't, I just was exhausted, finished, drained and anyways I worked 70 hour weeks when I've had my better phases.
But recently I started taking oregano oil, curcuma and bentonites, didn't cut out sugar completely yet, but hell no, I feel like I'm dying - this is my third day of taking it and my hand and arm inflamed, my pulse was the whole day on 120. And after the gym on the morning I went to work. And I completely broke down there at midday. I tried to hide it and nobody even realized it, but in my bureau I was not able to get up anymore, felt like being on a ship, muscle and joint aches so hard that I thought I'll die of Rheuma, when I moved I heard even my joints making these sounds like doors do the sometimes when hinches aren't piled. Tingling in my feet and hands, right arm red and swollen. I said I feel sick and made it out. At home I sunk into my bed, my brain felt like a huge mass of deconstructed thought processes, breathing was heavy. Felt asleep, woke up, all my skin was itchy and is still. I crave for sugar like a black whole, I ate fruits, because I just couldn't resist.
Tomorrow will start nystatin additionally, hope this is the die off - I don't want to be in this state any longer - it's hell.

She kind of chuckled at what I said and that was an old wives tale. Oh by the way my cancer patients get it. I just was rolling my eyes in the back of my head wondering where the hell this lady got a degree to practice medicine. I literally went home and found 15 or more papers in how prevalent candida was becoming and it was on the front of the CDC website. I can't tell you how much that frustrates the hell out of me. Some not all doctors are so full of themselves they don't realize that they're so busy that people that come in to do their own research I've done it because they don't have enough time to do it.

It seems all the videos you see online that talk about this assumes in a patient is eating poorly, a SAD diet, or using one or more of certain drugs like antibiotics, steroids, etc. What about the people who don't fit that profile? What about the people who eat a healthy, low carb diet, take none of the drugs mentioned, who are otherwise healthy...what's causing their problems? I would love to see a video addressing that, for once.

Fungal overgrowth is insidious. You see the appearance of symptoms and go to the conventional medications to treat the individual symptoms: sprays, medicated lotions, etc. I was taking high doses of caffeine through morning cups of tea just to roughly navigate the brain fog. I thought these were all separate issues and aggravated by the general mental and physical depression that began to build. Treating my conditions as separate issues seemed like a zero sum game: you obtain success with one symptom, but another symptom gets worse. This video confirms my experience with treatment. The leaves of medicinal plants that are mentioned in this video were crucial. There are good supplements that combine them in a capsule and I wish I knew to start with those. MCT oil, aromatic Greek mountain herbs, and pau d'arco seem to be working well in my body, too. Recovery is slow, made slower since I cannot remove carbs from my diet, but the breakthrough just with the brain fog has been a significant victory.

Dear Dr. Hyman , I find it a great shame that all the videos talking about Candida do not have RECIPES TO SURVIVE the tedious remedies, and methods and the time it takes to get rid of the Fungus; in fact ANY FUNGUS!
Talking about processed foods etc. is not going,in my opinion, deep enough into the issue of what to AVOID when having treatment.
For example how do I know if I am eating the rights food when for e.g.
I make a raw salad with: avocado, gurken, onions, them add: tinned corn ( is this allowed, because it is sweet), tomatoes *(are they allowed, although they are a FRUIT?). Can I use vinegar, e.g Balsamico + oil as a dressing, omitting the sugar. Can I use bought horseradish sauce, although it has a small content of sugar as an ingredient? Can I eat raw/ cooked Beetroot? Am I allowed to use SOYA SAUCE , including gluten-free soya sauce to add a punch to my food? Can I use coconut milk? What should I omit from the vegan sources of cheeses, milk substitutes?
Can I use spaghetti made from chickpeas and lentils, and what kind of sauce can I eat with them, when tomato sauce is a" fruit,* sauce"?
Can one eat rice, pulses, or even oats? I was stuffing myself with nuts, to fill my stomach, until I discovered eating too many (200grams!) means that I am also eating too much - SUGAR!
I am totally aware that it is difficult to conjure -up recipes for all tastes, but a thread as to what one CAN EAT is important; otherwise one is CONSTANTLY THINKING OF - FOOD. Because one is hungry, after a short period of time! At the beginning your guest talked about all the other aspects of how candida develops. He took an anthropological view of the matter. Unfortunately he did not go further enough (in my opinion) to support the viewer with the above mentioned problems. Perhaps you could make a follow- up video, as to what one can eat, SND perhaps advise on the supplements to take during the fight against candida. Or wether one should take probiotics to help the gut clear itself of the Fungus. I hope I have given you "Food for Thought"! All the Best m

@Scuba Chick depending on which area you are having issues there are specialist that this is more in their scope of practice such as mouth, esophageal, gut related a gastroenterologist. This can make you extremely ill as I have had it create a huge problem. It can actually be very dangerous untreated. In my past case I had mine confirmed by an upper GI. I being ill a few years later and for quite awhile because of insurance cost have tried to put off these procedures again. I can’t believe though that I was not told about diet and preventing further infection. I assumed take the medicine and it was better so I thought I was good. Now I’m extremely ill again and hoping to get better. With insurance cost i really can’t afford this now. I literally have the majority of the symptoms that they are saying. I am still watching.

How can they be this ignorant when there are so many people suffering from this. Doctors are useless. They say you are skinny and fit so you are not sick. Thats such a dumb thing to say, its only because health standards have droped to shit where you only can be sick if you are 100 pounds overweight diabetic.

Unfortunately, the highly respected doctors in the video have dwelt on the technical causes of how and why fungi grow out of control and they have done it admirably. However, for us less medically inclined who just want to get rid of the terrible toe fungus scourge, I have outlined in 5 steps below how to achieve this, without being an expert in the technical mumbo jumbo; with great respect for the doctors.
First off, it's important to talk about the highly marketed and very expensive oral and topical treatments as well as some home made remedies like Vicks VapoRub as an example. All of these IMO contribute less than 10% of victory and in most cases are absolutely useless against this formidable foe ( if used too early in the process). The reason? The fungus has grown an impenetrable crust against potential attackers (YOU). Think of Adolph Hitler's bomb shelters in WW2. None of those bombs got through.
Here are 5 steps to follow to achieve positive results. And BTW, If you don't plan to put in the effort, then walk away right now and live with the fungi (fun-guy). OK, here we go:
    1) Grind the toe nails to remove all signs of the fungus and clip nails short; do this weekly as needed. Note: wireless grinder on Amazon < $100.
    2) Get obsessed about washing feet 2-3 times a day; use a soapy tooth brush on and in between toes; then dry well with a hair dryer!!!
    3) Change socks and shoes often and keep shoes dry with Dr Scholls powder.
    4) Optional: Soak feet in water and Epsom salts for 20 minutes a day.
    5) Very important !!! Eliminate the jet fuel that fungi (fun-guys) thrive on (IT'S CALLED SUGAR). That means quitting alcohol if you're a big drinker.
Conclusion: As you become skilled in the five steps, you will notice that the fungus no longer likes the environment and has decided to move on. At this time, you can finally start applying the topical treatments. One final word: after the nails are clean and have been cured of the fungus, it will take 6-12 months for the nails to grow back, so be patient ! GOOD LUCK AND GOD SPEED !

I'm on carnivore and had a massive sugar binge, after it my joints ached. SUGAR IS NEVER A TREAT and we don't need to look at it as some occasional reward to ourselves. I make the best keto pancakes with ghee, wholesome treats are best. I used to have a fungal rash on my bikini line until I started eating coconut oil and adopting healthier eating habits.
