    What makes the Wire so great to me is that it's a TV series that feels like a book. The focus on themes, the constant foreshadowing, the extreme amount of detail, it's basically a visual novel.

      It kind of seems like game of thrones (more so the book series) set in 21st century Baltimore, working as police, politicians, and criminals. It has the wide cast of characters with very poetic and quotable dialogue. Their plots weave in interesting ways, they have their own arcs and morals, and the show discusses the gray morals on both sides of the law. What elevates The Wire is its look into the system itself that has put the characters where they are and shows the cycle

    This scene does 3 things:
    1.) introduces McNulty as the protagonist
    2.) establishes the concept of ‘’street names’’
    3.) establishes the theme of the show, that its about ‘’playing the game’’ and everyone from drug dealers, land developers, unions, police chiefs, lawyers, journalists, superintendents, the church, teachers, judges, students, police sergeants, mayors, longshoreman, drug lords, councilmen, kids, the city, the media, and the government are all playing it.

    McNulty: "If Snot Boogie always stole the money why did you always let him play?"
    Corner Boy: "You got to. Its America, man."
    The Wire is the greatest dramatic series ever. Every American should watch it and listen to what its writers have to say. This opening scene prefaces the entire theme of the show with poetic clarity by using the metaphor of an alley craps game gone too violent to describe the elusiveness of the American Dream in the twenty-first century United States. Just like so many Americans in our capitalist society Snot Boogie continually plays a game he knows he probably won't win only to get beaten down every time he tries to outsmart the rules. He futilely continued to do so because the dream of cheating the system to win was more powerful than the violently real consequences of getting caught. His peers let him continually try knowing this because in America everyone, even a cheater, deserves a chance to win. That combination of economic idealism and social egalitarianism defining the American Dream so permeates every fiber of our civilization that even a bunch of disenfranchised West Baltimore corner kids observed its ethic in a craps game.

  • @Duskets
    @Duskets 3 ปีที่แล้ว +90

    The Wire immediately distinguishes itself from its peers by making the very first scene in the series one in which a cop talks, and more importantly *listens* to a citizen. But it doesn’t even dwell on the status. They’re not cop and citizen but characters - two human beings from different sides of the track. It stops and asks questions about the failure of the state and how that failure impacts everyday Americans.
    Far too many shows in the "crime drama" genre would instead glance over or diminish these hardships, but David Simon was so resolute and confident in this show's message that he managed to stare the problem right in the face, for over 4 minutes, and has two characters waxing philosophy over what is still a highly contentious issue to this day.

    What is so great about this being the first scene is the way it ties into the final scene of the series where McNulty looks out into the skyline of Baltimore. We never hear anything more of the death of Snot Boogie, because as it shows in the end, there will always be a Snot Boogie. That is the way urban America is. There is always another Avon, Stringer, Prop Joe, Marlo, etc. Just like Omar says comparing the Greeks and the Romans: "Same dude, just a different name."
    Baltimore is no different from the start of the series as McNulty looks out onto Snot Boogie lying dead on the pavement, all the way until he looks out onto the city with that homeless man in his car. We learn throughout the series why that is the case.

    The thing that's scariest about this show is that it's not as much of a drama as it is a documentary. I've lived my whole life here in Baltimore and I've driven by too many murder scenes going to and from wherever. Doesn't matter if you stay your ass to the "safe" parts of town, trouble finds you. This is the best opening scene out of any television show. I mean this single scene set the tone and mood for the next five seasons: death, poverty and decay in urban America are all discussed, only to be further probed and explored all the way to the very end.
    This is how every show should start.

      @speedking7224 I'd say bb is more about Walt slowly succumbing to the massive ego he's always had. He was always capable of being a monster, all it took was a little nudge. Over the course of the show, he becomes the villain without you realizing it, all while making you root for him. You get so caught up in hoping he'll win and leave the game that you don't entirely realize how much of a monster he is until either very late in the show or after you finish it.

    The beginning of an epic, legendary 5 season journey. I still from time to time binge watch all five seasons from my on demand service.. and every time I see some little nuances that I didn’t catch before.
    All the actors from this show have all long since moved on to other projects but from 2002-08 they came together to make what is in my opinion one ofTHE GREATEST SHOWS in television history, and one that still holds relevance all these many years later.
    Everyone clamoring for a reunion show or movie, meh, it just wouldn’t be the same in my opinion. Lets just enjoy what we had and be grateful that we all had window to look into both the criminal and judicial system s and all there inner workings with some great acting, and character arch’s.
    There will never be another show like it.

    The Wire and The Sopranos were the golden age of TV. I have seen many great shows come and go since then, but none have yet to hold a candle to these two shows. Breaking Bad? OK very smart and entertaining show, still nothing like those two shows. I still don't understand the amount of respect that show gets over The Wire and The Sopranos. Anyway, thanks HBO for the good times!

      I would say the golden age is still rolling. GOT is a pretty great fantasy show. I Breaking Bad is a great show. I don't think Breaking bad gets a ton of respect over those two shows. It usually gets compared to those two. All three are considered to be the best shows of all time so, I don't think Breaking bad gets more respect. I know Breaking Bad is more popular probably cuz it's well marketed and it's in an age where social media is rampant and that helped spread the word.

      awesome420ication The Wire's political commentary is just too deep compared to Breaking Bad IMO making it ultimately the better show. The Sopranos is very good, but sure as hell not as ambitious in terms of reach as The Wire.

It wasn't until I listened to David Simon's audio commentary that I got it. The Wire is about America's failure to be economically fair for everyone. This scene makes it clear in no uncertain terms that if people are not allowed the opportunity they need in order to live, they'll do whatever they can or capitalize on whatever opportunity they can, even if it kills them.

    The best way to describe The Wire: every season is like a great novel. The first 1-2 episodes (chapters) start off slow, introducing the characters & conflicts. But by the 3rd episode, every little detail starts to come together, starts to make sense, & you'll be hooked all the way to the last page. There's also a huge cast of believable characters with great arcs, & social commentary. You see how the war on drugs affects police, dealers, junkies, schools, politics, media & blue collar workers.

    I grew up in Rural MN but have lived in the inner city of Milwaukee for 5yrs. All these "best of" lists are relative. Me, I think if you have ever lived in the big American inner-city, there is no more accurate and awesome show than The Wire...shows the dysfunction and failure of the large urban institutions. BB is great, loved it, but all my friends who claim that BB is better than The Wire, have never worked/delt with the obese urban institutions that The WIre so greatly portrayed.

    • @theEarlofChip
      @theEarlofChip 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're talking about Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I've worked with "inner-city" communities on the east coast, and worked with a police oversight commission overseeing abuse reports and racial discrimination. But even before I did all that, I found the Wire to be a contrived, magical fantasy-land; a collection of fanciful tales filled with wonder and whimsy. This scene in particular outlines the shortcomings of the rest of the series.
      Sure, you could say it's the best portrayal of these issues on a (premium network) television show. In my opinion, that's not saying much.

      Sconi71 I'm sure there's validity, and I didn't mean to say that mke is a happy suburban 2.5 kids land or anything like that. Maybe what really annoys me is this widespread idea that it's "realism". _Relatively_, for a TV drama, sure it is.

    • @malachicoleman5340

      You sure seemed really butt hurt about a fictional cop getting shot on The Wire six years ago. But I bet you have no problem with all of the murders committed by police and them getting away with it recently. Why are cops' lives more important and valuable than the citizens they supposedly protect? They get into that profession knowing full well there's a higher risk of death, why when it actually happens they are outraged? Why are you not saying that if a cop shoots or kills a regular person who was unarmed and posed no threat should be executed? Also, the guys in The Wire are not "Scarface wannabes" or "scareface wannabees" as you said (learn how to spell asswipe) they were the real deal and highly intelligent. As a matter of fact, I don't think your dumb ass even watched the show judging by your comments. You probably heard about it and because of the hype surrounding it, decided to look up some videos of it and watch a few of them and think you know what you're talking about, like the pretentious asshole you are.

    My interpretation of this was that Snot Boogie represents the Corrupt/Inefficient Systems in place and the other dice players represent the rest of poor American communities (especially Black). Whenever the System (SnotBoogie) steals from the other players (the communities) he always gets basically a slap on the hand and is allowed to play the game and steal every time from these same players (communities). And this analogy is repeated throughout the series. David Simon and Ed Burns are awesome.
