    Peter, great job on the Sonos videos. Now that dual subs are possible, could you compare this "ultimate" setup against the Arc + Sub x2 + OneSL surrounds? This seems fair since the price point is the same......

    For those who want it all:
    Arc+sub3+one surround; used for film/TV viewing.
    2 x Fives placed in front, either side of the arc; used when playing music.
    Thats when you know you are ‘all in’ into Sonos.

    I think the Sonos 5 as surrounds might have more of an advantage iPod the space between the surrounds in a wide spread room arrangement would yield more tangible subjective performance advantages over the much smaller Sonos 1. I get a lot of sharp, pinpoint directionality from the Sonos ones, (more so from he right side). I cannot help but wonder how much more fuller the atmos effect could be with the Sonos 5 as it pertains to offering much bigger sound stage at similar volumes that I set my Sonos 1. I am of the belief that the broader spread of sound emanating from two Sonos 5s will offer a much more subtle but more importantly convincing immersion into the Atmos sound field than Sonos 1s are capable of. The smallness of the Ones in an Arc/2 Sub Gen 3 set up is too noticeable

    • @kennethwilliams9668
      @kennethwilliams9668 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm thinking the same. The sound stage has to be better. And that is the point, not necessarily louder but more immersion...you cannot tell me a 1sl is the same as a 5 I'm sound quality

    The only important thing you need really is the ARC.

    Peter, firstly I want to take the time and thank you for your videos. They are very informative and useful! Just some setup questions: What difference would the position of a pair of Sonos Five have as surround sound speakers (Horizontal compared to Vertical)? What position do you recommend for movies and music? Also, where would the ideal placement be for the Sub Gen3 in this particular setup? Would it be a bad choice to have in underneath the Sonos Arc?

    Hi Peter, Love you channel and have been sending friends and others in your direction. This was the best Sonos setup that money could buy at the time you did this video, but things move quickly and now you can add 2 subs with the Sonos five’s. My question is what is better 2 subs and the Sonos ones or 1 sub and the Sonos fives or finally 2 subs and the Sonos fives? Would love to see this comparison. Thanks again 🙏

    Hi Sir , enjoin your content a lot !, I am about to receive my Arc soon (not yet arrived to IL) and wish to add 2 sonos one Sl's to the arc.
    Position wise , I am very limited and therefoere , they can be placed ONLY at 1 meter above ear level and pointing towards the TV wall. They will be positioned on top of high shelf which unfortunately can not be angled down, so pointing towards the TV wall directly (1 full meter above the ear)
    will you still recommend buying them? Will they add a dramatically change over the Arc itself (due to the limitations mentioned ), .thanks in advance, .keep on the great job !

    Thanks for the video. I have been waiting for this video for a very long time :). Can you please consider making a video where you show your actual sonos setup (arc, sub, fives as rears) instead of placing these on desk in the usual videos and talk about ideal placement for the whole system (instead of just sub which you made a video before). Also if you can show some preferred settings that can be done on this system on top of true play (setting music as full playback, setting rear volume, sub volume etc) to make best use of this $2500 system

I was reminded of a spot in one of your videos where you mentioned to keep the cost (how much a setup it) to yourself unless you have an understanding partner (orsomething like that) we both find those comments bratty funny. But I cannot remember which sonos video it came from (from your channel) and ideas on which it was?

    I hope you will do a test on the Denon home series. To my untrained ears in a big shop they sounded better then what sonos had on offer. Reason why I chose sonos is because the Denon home line up does not include a sub and soundbar (the older 2019 Heos sub and soundbar versions can be coupled but they look totally different, which at 2500-3000 $ I don't like...)

    • @PeterPee

      Beyond the sound, you have to consider that Sonos is going to be supporting your gear for much much longer than almost every other brand out there.

      i want that the 2x fives, the arc and the 2x ones to create a surround sound

    • @PeterPee
      @PeterPee  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They won’t work together to create surround. Your surround setup with be arc + sub + ones at the rear. The fives will have to be setup separately as stereo pair. Not as part of the surround setup. You can play the surround and stereo setup together though.

    Dolby Atmos using Ultimate SONOS Setup :
    Sonos Arc + Sub Gen 3 + 2piece Play 5
    Or using Amp + KEF :
    1. Denon AVR-X1600H
    2. KEF Q350
    3. KEF Q650c
    4. KEF 150
    5. KEF Kube 10B

    I have a question for you: would you recommend buying only 2x Sonos 5 as rear speakers to the ARC instead 2x SLs and the Sub? Budgetwise it would be the same. As the Play 5 already have a good bass I am wondering if the Sub is even necessary in the set up with the ARC

      I placed it in either orientation and to my ears, it didn’t make a difference when watching movies in terms of height perception. I actually would place it horizontally so as to get a wider surround soundscape.

    It would be cool if the sonos five as rear surround speakers in there upright position would use it's stereo drivers as one for rear sound and one for above sound. So with the speaker slightly tilted up the bottom drivers would do rear sound, and the topp driver would bounce it's sound off the ceiling for above sound like the arc's upward fireing speakers.

    Would a Sonos Arc + Fives (no sub) trump an Arc + Ones + Sub for a medium sized apartment room? In music mode the Fives would probably sing better, but how much would I be giving up without the Sub?

    • @PeterPee

      I'd say get the Arc + Ones + Sub. The sub is a easy recommendation for Movies. But you are right that Fives will be better for music. So depends on how much you use them for music and how critical are you in the listening.

    Hello Peter,
    firstly thanks a lot for your detailed descriptions and test with the Sonos systems.
    I bought a Sonos Arc and the sub. For movies/films it is impressive especially with Dolby Atmos.
    Unfortunately the most films have no Dolby Atmos in German.
    But I am not so happy when I hearing music. I think about to buy two Sonos 5 as rear speakers. But I am not really sure If I can use for music only the two Sonos five in the back? If the systems is configured as a 5.1 system.
    Thanks for your support.

    • @PeterPee
      @PeterPee  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you set it up as two rear surround channels, you can't use the Fives purely for music. But you can set it to send full sounds to the rear (fives) and also increase the music volume for surround. This way, it will be much louder and will stand out in the music mix.

    Hey Peter, I just got my Sonos arc and set it up with the policies SL's and sub with my Vizio E-75. It seems like I am getting Atmos to the arc from streaming Amazon. • @PeterPee
      @PeterPee  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      DD+ is lossy Atmos. And that doesn’t require eArc or hdmi 2.1. It means your tv can pass through bitstream for the arc to process. You are in a good place!

  • @domenicfp
    @domenicfp 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Again, great work. I see very similar questions to what I am about to ask, so I hope I do not upset you in asking it. Can the Sonos Fives give you much of what the Sonos Sub (gen 3) can? What frequencies will be missed? Let us say, two Sonos Fives ($1,100) may equal two Sonos One SL and a Sub (Gen 3) ($950). What will be lost or benefit in that type of pairing?

    • @PeterPee
      @PeterPee  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just shoot your questions, don't worry. I say that if you are into music, just get the two Fives. That will do very well. A setup with Sonos One and Sub doesn't convey the nuances of music as well. For Movies, the Sub is essential. For music, I prefer the Fives.

    • @PeterPee
      @PeterPee  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have used SVS and REL before too. While I don’t have them now and thus can’t compare, they are quite different and serve a slightly different market. They are more audiophile grade and their owners usually snub the Sonos and Bose lovers. It’s like no one wants to compare a mercedes CLA AMG to a kia stinger. Even if there is a good chance the stinger is going to smoke the AMG.

      I would say that in terms of longevity, the Sonos setup is likely to be updated a lot more frequently and supported for a lot longer. And if you plan to grow the system, it allows for that. The Bose setup would be maxed out from day 1.

    Hey Peter I have the Playbar with 2 sonos 5s beside it and 2 sonos ones at the rear accompanied by the sub. If i want more fire power would 2 subs be overkill? Or adding 2 more 5s or swapping the playbar for the arc be the better option?

    • @PeterPee
      @PeterPee  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can’t really use two subs in one ‘room’. But your setup sounds like you already have two rooms, one for playbar and one for sonos 5s. I’d be honest and say it doesn’t make too much of a difference. In fact it might overpower the room already.
      The next thing you might want to consider is to replace the ones with the fives. But that’s about the max you can get out of your situation.
      Replacing the playbar with the arc won’t give you a lot more.

    Would you say you hear an AUDIBLE difference between both setups (one's vs fives) when streaming movies (More immersion and much bigger soundstage)?
    In other words: is the 5% you mentioned really audible or is there a difference mainly with music?

    Thanks for the informative video as always. I’m looking to get a set up of 2 sonos 5s, The Ark and one or two subs. It sounds like from what you’re saying that you would need one subwoofer near the Ark and one subwoofer near the 5s because of the way it automatically sets the crossover. It’s really silly that it makes the crossover so high. I would imagine that having the fives as surrounds gives a more open and clearer response because they are bigger speakers. But that crossover is very irritating. Is there anything you think we could do? Any other settings you could change?

    • @PeterPee
      @PeterPee  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nothing much you can do for the crossover. Sonos doesn't allow it to be changed. The only time I see they allowed changes is for the Sonos Amp when a third party sub is connected.

    Great stuff!! Actually interested in this crossover point. You did a video with arc and sub showing crossover point at about 92 hz. When you add 5s to the mix the crossover point for both arc and 5s raised to 115hz? Wonder what the crossover point was increased to when I added my 1sl's as surrounds instead of your 5's?

    • @PeterPee
      @PeterPee  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because Sonos doesn’t disclose this, and I don’t have the most accurate of instruments and fixed setup, the crossover point that I am providing is at best an estimate. But I have done so many of these tests, like literally hundreds upon hundreds, I am fairly certain that the crossover point is set very high. I think Sonos really wants us to hear the sub. :) I have a thought at this moment, that Sonos wants to raise the crossover so that the surround channels can be a little more subtle. Or that the surround channels need not carry much bass anyway since most audio mix won’t have much bass in their soundtrack. But at this moment, I can only say this is just a Guess. If I ever get a job at Sonos I will dig all these information out. Only to get fired when I release the info to the public. :)

I just got my Sonos system this week, the arc, sub, and two rear SL’s. This is my first surroundsound system ever so I did extensive research before purchasing Because the Samsung Q90r/ q95T and The LGSN11RG are viable competitors for the same price, however after watching many of your videos I realized that next year there’s going to be a new Samsung sound bar, every manufacturer will have a new sound by next year rendering the previous models obsolete, but Sonos supports their products for many years with firmware updates that I can depend on. I’ve never owned Sonos anything so I watched a ton of your videos and purchased the entire system but I was debating on getting the sub, however you did so many extensive videos on it that I invest and I have to say...for me ...it’s my favorite part of the entire system. I absolutely love the sub, it’s mine boggling how it produces so much base without any rumble. Now I’m just more so interested in Ambien versus rear setting on the Sonos app, it’s a very obscure topic online ... and I love your channel because things that you try to Google and can’t find you actually address. Your videos from Singapore directly impacted me spending US$2000 in Washington DC on this product...so The content you create actually affected another persons life, in real time, in a tangible way...that money came out of my bank account Because of the information you gave on this channel, so what you do absolutely matters and is appreciated and does affect lives Around the world

      Without a doubt 5’s/Fives make a significant difference in listening experience for music. But you have to play with the app settings for your room EQ and surround 5’s/Fives to be able to get a good sound for music playback. You might also prefer listening to music with Autotune turned off. It’s all about your own preferences, combined with the acoustics in your own listening space. But rule no1 in this config is to switch surround speakers to full music playback because they default to “ambient” which is useless for music playback. Enjoy!

    I am planning to set up a sonos system in my bedroom. I am sure I want the sonos arc but i am not sure if the sonos fives are too big for my room. Would you recommend them in a relatively small room to place them as surround speakers or should i place them besides the sonos arc in front of the tv?

      I'd recommend the Sonos Ones as the surrounds in your bedroom. The Sonos Fives will be too much of an overkill..
