    First of all, you absolutely deserve million of followers! You are doing an amazing job into your review, you are objective and also you are far away to be a " sonos fanboy". Thumbs up and please continue like that!
    Do you think (or maybe got some rumors) that in the future Sonos will add any speaker to his lineup, with upfire capabilities to enhance the Atmos effects, also from back of the room?

    Peter Pee, just want to say that I’m so happy to have come across your channel! You reviews are superb in detail and editing. On the other hand, man you are costing me A LOT of $$$ 😂! I just watched your other video regarding the Sonos One’s vs the Sonos 5’s as surround speakers and jeez does my wallet hurt. One section of that video did raise a question: my bedroom dimension is 13ft x 16ft and the surround speakers will be set up on my bedside tables. Do you think the Sonos 5’s will be to powerful given the room size? What do you think would be the best configuration? Thanks a bunch in advance and for all the work you do! Cheers 🍻

      Welcome to the rabbit hole of Sonos. The door has been opened and Alice is waiting. :)
      Actually you have a sizeable room and mine isn't that much bigger. I do most of my listening in a 12x21feet room, but the ceiling height is 12 feet so it's a tall room. I find that the Fives fill in the sound very nicely.
      The only issue that I can find is that when you say the fives are going to be on the beside table, I find that they might be too close and can get distracting when surround effects kick in. But if you don't have the problem with the Ones, then you won't have that problem with the Fives. A more powerful speaker doesn't mean that it will sound louder at the same given volume. It just means it has the POTENTIAL to go louder without distortion at any given frequency.
      And mind you, if you set the Fives on your bedside table and listen to music on this setup with full sound being passed to them instead of ambient, you are going to have a party in your dreams. Sorry for the kick down the rabbit hole!

      Going down the rabbit hole for sure as I have been watching your videos all day 😂. I’m going to pick up a new LG 65cx and the Xbox series X when it releases along with all the Sonos equipment. Quite a large purchase for myself 😬. I’ve never heard the Sonos 1 or 5 in person and would hate to feel wanting more if I go for the 1’s... although saving $600 is nice. My ceiling height is only 8ft and my MLP (haha using your lingo) will be level with all speakers except the sub of course. I think I will try for the 1’s first and keep my fingers crossed 🤞 it will be sufficient. Had a blast watching many of your videos today and can’t wait to see what’s coming next! You’re doing a phenomenal job!

    Good job! It never crossed my mind to try this Sonos setup without the Sonos Sub. I have to say that-at least from the sound recorded by your mic-the FIVES do a much better job than the Sub. The sound was clearer and more immersive with the FIVE’s setup. A lot gets lost when you paired the Arc with the sub; the midrange is lifeless and the soundstage definitely shrinks. I wonder if those midrange frequencies are filled in by the ONEs in a more conventional setup, or maybe Sonos should consider engineering more adequate surround speakers.

    Superb Video P2. Appreciate the frequency response details along with the notes during the dolby atmos clip.
    I have a query. I have a Beam gen 2 along with the Sub gen 3 and One SLs as sorround. During TV playback and Spotify music playback from TV, the sorrounds have ambient sound and become alive only during a sorround effects in movies and portions of Spotify songs. How does the Five pair overcome this drawback? Wouldn't the same signals be transmitted to the Fives. How does it compete for bass when it would only recieve ambient or sorround portion of the movie or music sound when playback is happening thru TV?

In this video you say the play 5's have more base than the standard rear speakers, so if you go with the play 5's you can get away without a sub. Thanks and great video again!!

    • @PeterPee
      @PeterPee  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hey Usman, thanks for pointing it out! The thing about Sonos is that the modularity means the combinations are kind of hard to exhaust. But yes, you're right to point out that I have picked the FIVEs with no Sub over ONEs with Sub.But I kind of did that with music setup in mind and not with an ARC in consideration.
      Redrat79, without doing an actual test and measurement, it's hard for me to substantiate my views. This particular video explores either upgrading the Arc with a sub or a pair of fives. It doesn't not consider adding a sub+Ones as a third option. I agree that this might be a video to make but I'd say the conclusion will be easily guessed, the full setup with sub will always be better.

    • @PeterPee
      @PeterPee  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      If you are specifically looking for home theatre without any form of music listening, your combination of the Arc+Sub+One is the right one to go.

    • @PeterPee
      @PeterPee  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I didn’t try Trueplay in that particular setup on the table TOP as it’s not my regular positioning. The dip is potentially also caused by the position in the middle of the room.
      Most room correction systems I know pull down peaks and rarely boost up the dips. Let’s see if I can get a decent setup and test the difference. I’m in the midst of shifting my workstation around as it currently blocks the whole projector screen and no one can watch anything!

  • @The1Ejay

    For music i agree, but in movies you would only get the base of the 5s if the surrounds respond/ have content to output, so not sure its a true replacement for movies..

    • @robbates4704
      @robbates4704 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This would be exactly my worry. The rears aren’t intended to receive the full base profile. Now if Sonos altered the sound to redirect low frequencies to the 5, this could be an interesting option since the price of a Sub+2xOnes is roughly the same as 2 x 5’s.

    • @PeterPee
      @PeterPee  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You get the wide soundstage with Symphonisk Bookshelf speakers or One SL’s and the sub right? Same as the Play 5’s? I notice the huge difference in surround sound without the surround speakers. Actually the difference is even more insane how you recorded and set it up on the Play 5 as read surrounds with 2 subs video. Which is an epic setup lol. That’s audiophile for sure. But the “Woah, where is this place?” Comes from the right headphone, and “Come on you guys, let’s go!” Comes from the left headphone in that video!

    Bass is normally non directional as I know, does the fact that all the bass in the 5+Arc setup is coming directly from the back. ..isnt it harming the hearing experience? Leave the scientific measures aside?

    • @PeterPee

      I moved it back to my regular position and I toggled the sub on and off. You can sense that the whole room is uniformly louder when the fives have to do its job without the sub. I don’t think it sounded weird though. But with the sub on, the thumping is more powerful at the mid bass region.

      Hey James, that is a question that I have been trying to answer myself still. Sound is a b*tch to measure and evaluate objectively as there are so many variables. Having lived with the phantom reactors for a bit longer and having deployed them around the house in various setups, my take is that the reactors have a smoother more even bass. It is, afterall, a stereo subwoofer setup if you may.
      But, in terms of pure output at any given frequency, the Sonos Sub still gives more of a kick. It hits you harder in the chest when an explosion or a gun shot goes off.

    When looking at the frequency response of the Arc & Sub, other than the extra base from the sub, it looks as though the Arc just puts more amplitude on the mids and highs. If I were to go with the Arc and Ones instead of the sub, other than losing some base, couldn't I just turn up the volume and achieve basically the same response from the Arc? I would actually like to see how well the curves overlap by just turning up the volume on the Arc alone.

      Jonathan, have you heard the fives in person? They are one of those speakers that you look at and wonder how in the world they manage to extract so much bass from a speaker that size. And then I look at the SVS Prime towers that I have paired with a 300WPC Emotiva XPA Gen 3 and I sold the amp+speakers.

Id like to ask if a Sub can be paired with 2 x Play 5s for music and in the same room also with the Arc for movies? Was going to use the Play 5s for surrounds but have decided use just for music, hopefully with the bass providing some extra bass. Appreciate your advice.

    • @PeterPee
      @PeterPee  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, don't add two more fives. It doesn't integrate well. You can replace the 2 SL with 2 fives but no point adding the two Fives, or ceiling speakers. It will mess up the sound stage.

    Excellent review. I really heard a difference at 12:25 forward with the bass presence. I ordered the FIVES after watching your review. They will ship in mid December. I took advantage of cyber Monday sale and saved $200. I will upgrade my Playbar to The ARC and pair them.
    Costco is selling the ARC without the microphones for voice command. I presently do not use these voice commands. Do you have any insight on buying an ARC with or without the microphones?

    I bought the both of these on your recommendation and I have to say they are crap any decent seperate speaker system would be way better than this, the surround sound is virtually inaudible is just sounds like a really narrow sound stage and the bass is anything but tight it's just a big boom box I would advise anyone to avoid this system and go for separates!!

      Hey Bill, it's unfortunate you didn't get the same experience as some of us. It could also be expectations. You do have to make sure that the material you are playing is surround format and you are connecting it the right way yes?

    Today i bought my second Sonos Five. Streaming flac files hi-res audio is a great option but don't underestimate MP3. Sometimes it's hard to hear the differences! I tried Blade Runner 2049 (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) and many others like Scorion - Drake (Don't matter to me). Also classic and jazz music sounds real good. Play with the loudness option in your Sonos app, on some tracks it will give a fantastic bass effect, not on all tracks because it depends on what kind of music you play. The Sonos Arc will be my next to buy and perhaps also the Sonos sub gen 3. Sonos is amazing...!!!

    Peter can you do a curve comparison of Beam + 2x Fives vs Beam + Sub?

    • @PeterPee
      @PeterPee  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I see what you are getting at there. Don't get the Fives with the Beam. In surround configuration, the Fives will get the lower bass frequencies cut off and you won't get enough rumble out of them. They make the overall sound much much louder but you will still be missing out on the LFE (Low frequency effects) mix. Get the Sub!

    I'm about to get into the Sonos ecosystem to replace a dedicated 7.1.4 system while I am in a rental home where I can't install speakers. I've watched a lot of your very informative videos and find REW graphs very useful! I plan to get an Arc with 2 subs; and wanted your opinion on getting a pair of Fives's as the surrounds vs the One SL's? Is that upgrade worthwhile in this setup?
    I would love to see the REW response with the Arc, 2 Subs and 2 Fives (if you already made a video with that comparison I haven't come across it yet).

    • @PeterPee
      @PeterPee  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have made so many different videos I am starting to lose track (actually already did) of the videos that I have made. I must have done that test before but may not have actually made that video.
      Instead of waiting for me to get round to it, I will just tell you upfront, not worth it. the dual subs are going to give you all the bass that you need. The Fives come in handy as surrounds if you need more volume but with dual subs, your ARC and Ones as surrounds are going to be liberated to do more of their things so overall, the volume is already plenty loud.
      Don't get me wrong, it is better... but, not worth so much extra.

    • @JohnRobbfl
      @JohnRobbfl 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PeterPee Thank you very much, I appreciate all your research and information! I can't believe those subs reach into the 20hz range at all, so that's great.
      I recently sold my home where I had a 7.1.4 with a Power Sound Audio dual 15" sealed sub; which in my room is flat to 8hz (I wish I could attach the REW screenshot) and in my new place I cannot install surround speakers or have room for that beast of a sub, so the Sonos Arc w/dual subs will have to suffice.

    Dear Peter,
    I've recently upgraded my sonos playbar to an Arc. Straight out of the box, i felt that the ARC is somehow lacking the in the bass and and lower mid section when compared to a playbar.
    That leaves me wonder whether am I not tuning it properly? or it is lacking in those section when compared to a playbar; which leads me to my next question.
    Does pairing with with sub or the sonos 5s help to meet the lack that I'm searching for?
    Surround sound for now is not a priority yet, but the lack of lower mid and bass is a thorn in the flesh for now. I listen more on music and movies that has more conversation.

      Oh god... That's a real problem. You can't. When you launch the Sonos App, it will search for wifi and look for your Sonos speaker on that wifi before you can even play. In fact, I believe you even need it to setup.

Since I have this setup currently in my living room where there's no TV (yet), it's only for music and it sounds awesome. I did a video on that.. Adding up each component on its own, you are looking at close to 500W of real power. Not PMPO. But power draw from the wall, at peak outputs. But no one listens that way. And pairing them in a full surround config will channel power away from some speakers (like the surround).
