      Oklahoma Hank he tried to give it another shot or a chance. Clearly it did not go well. This is why Chain is better and why japanese bikes are better in EVERY WAY in terms of spare parts. Cruza paid the ultimate price so we won't

      Jon Andrews ducatis has had a horrible reputation WAY BACK. The Panigale V4 is a different story + Chains are wayyy wayyyyyyyyyy easier to replace and maintain. All you need is fucking kerosene

  • @LouCFur90
    @LouCFur90 6 ปีที่แล้ว +73

    Ride it until the belt snaps. Then tow it home with your fancy trailer. Buy some Ducati tools and make a fix video about it. In the meantime, stop wondering about why a 150 hp bike eats belts.

    • @CycleCruza
      @CycleCruza  6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      It's not the hp, it's the belt guard that spits rocks up underneath the belt. I might just remove the belt guard and see if that helps. I just hope ducati replaces the belt.

    • @LouCFur90
      @LouCFur90 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      If the guard is trapping and/or sucking in rocks, take it off. This won't void a warranty. Belts are a wear item and rarely fall under warranty work. They are only going to replace the belt, if something structurally is causing premature wear. They are not going to hold responsibility for rocks on the road.

    • @marinodejesus8024
      @marinodejesus8024 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      LouCFur90 they should hold responsibilty for badly engineering a belt guard. It's unheard of for a belt to snap regularly in just a few thousand miles, it's either a shitty belt or a mistake made by the engineers. In this case it's the engineering.

    • @LouCFur90
      @LouCFur90 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Service bulletins and/or recalls place manufacturer responsibility. I get what you are saying, but it has little legal standing in this case so far.

  • @DevisionedFate
    @DevisionedFate 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Remove the guard or maybe get a bristle brush and cut some bristles and attach them at the end of the belt guard somehow. No rocks would be able to get past them and if the belt flexes hard the bristles would be soft enough to be pushed out of the way.

    Harley Davidson (and other brands using a non-enclosed belt) have had the exact same issue for years! Solution? Enclose the belt to prevent rocks / pebles from entering the bottom rear pulley. Example: My 2005 Kymco Grandvista 250cc scooter (and most scooters) enclose the entire belt in a metal, cover with a plastic cover over that to keep water, etc out. Result? I'm on my second belt in 23,000 miles - normal replacement is 15K. My belt cost $40 and I do it my self. 800 to 1200 is out outrageous!

  • @flibbertigibbet6200
    @flibbertigibbet6200 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The problem is the big fat sticky rear tyre holds on to the small stones and flicks them off in the direction of the belt, The upper belt guard stops the stone from carrying on it's way but instead catches it, places it on the belt for you and sends it to the front sprocket for crushing, As the gap between the sprocket pulley and the engine casing is very small it traps them there to wear a nice grove out of your belt, Which has just happened to mine even with a Roland Sands open sprocket cover fitted and only 3k mls. I will ride it until it snaps if it ever does. The UK want £605 fitted

    You worry wayyyy to much. What if this happens, what if that happens - didin't you make a video about motorcycle fear and talked about not thinking about accidents and shit that might happen? Ride it, enjoy it, there's nothing wrong with your bike, and if you are really concerned about this issue - wait, if it really is a real problem, not something that happened to some unlucky dude who decided to start a shitstorm, someone is bound to find a solution. Best wishes my friend.

  • @geraldscott9446
    @geraldscott9446 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Unfortunately this is a problem with all belt drive bikes, including Harleys. I recently bought a used Harley, and one of the things I checked thoroughly was the belt and rear pulley for damage, and to make sure the belt guard was in place. A lot of guys don't like the looks of the belt guard, and take it off, making the problem much worse. I have never belt that belt drive was a good thing for bikes, for several reasons, including your issue. I doubt there is anything Ducati can do about it. Harley never has.

    • @CycleCruza
      @CycleCruza  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the feedback! It's all a learning experience for me. This is the first belt drive bike I've ever had.

    • @jdman7170
      @jdman7170 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly. Any bike that is belt driven could snap the belt if a small piece of gravel gets caught between the belt and sprocket. Safest bet is to not ride it on back roads with gravel or during the winter months when there is all kind of anti skid on the road. Stop stressing over the bike and enjoy it. It will be alright!

    Glad to see a moto blogger bring this issue to light. The diavel forums have had this issue extensively. I myself had it (Ducati replaced the belt for free).
    I reported the issue to Ducati’s engineering rep for North America, but I doubt anything will come of it until someone dies as a result of the belt failing.
    As for fixing it. I think removing the guard will stop any chances of you getting a free replacement. Maybe buy Ducati’s aluminium belt guard. It doesn’t actually cover the belt, and it looks cool as fuck. All the third party guards just replicate the Ducati design so don’t buy them.

    19750 miles on my Diavel S and no belt problems (I bought it new). Yes I've used the DPL a few times. Every Chain and shaft equipped bike I've had before has had expensive probs long before that mileage and this has the advantage of absolutely no maintenance.

    Take pics of all the marks & chips on your belt & also the poor / minimal clearance between belt &;guard. email them to Ducati Technical at their headquarters emphasising your concerns & ASK THEM to recommend an upgraded oem belt guard or an after market one. If they won't do this ask them to confirm in writing to replace the belt F.O.C if it snaps or wears prematurely.

    And so many people whine about a good ol' chain drive. Keep on whining. A maintained chain just makes a lot of sense overall. Sure a shaft drive might be great, but they sap the most power and jack the suspension under throttle.
    Chains forever. Put one of a half dozen auto-lube systems on the chain if you're so inclined.

    Remove it, it’s not like it’s a chain drive and it’s deflecting chain wax from smearing the underside of the bike or you, in your case, it’s only preventing touching of the belt or maybe spit up from the road.... if you remove it and failure happens, just put it back on before taking it in. Keeping it probably does more damage than good if it’s a known reason for failure.

    The only real warranty voiding mods are the ones that cause the malfunction you want the warranty to fix. For example if you put nitrous on a bike and blow the head, they aint going to fix it. If you put an HID headlight up that frys your electronics they are not going to fix it. If you take the belt drive guard off and the engine blows, they will still fix it.

    Belts are strong and reliable. I’d take the guard off if it’s that concerning. Otherwise ride it till it breaks. Its a wear item to begin with. Or if there is chain conversion That’ll eliminate your concern. Vrod parts are becoming obsolete and trying to find aftermarket support is even harder. Go into any harley dealership and ask to buy the oil return line or feed I can’t remember for the Vrod, the part is obsolete, I had to have a local hose shop custom make one for about the same price of Harley’s obsolete part. or get a quote for valve lash and service interval for that.

    A lot of people are getting belts replaced under warranty due to this issue. My local Ducati club says removing the front sprocket cover fixes the issue as well- the rocks don't get trapped in there and just bounce out. That would be a dumb reason to sell the bike if you really like it otherwise!

  • @Grumpyoldtrainer
    @Grumpyoldtrainer 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Belt guard removal may be option if you don't want to sell. If it's under warranty with belt guard on and it breaks, Ducati should fix it for no cost. But, if you remove the guard then mostly your belt won't suffer damage. You can call Ducati to confirm what exactly your warranty covers with or without belt guard. Decisions, decisions.

  • @tomgarney7700

    Do not remove the belt guard. When you take it in for service tell the Ducati folks what’s happening. They may have a recall on the belt guard. If not look thru the forums for a fix and mod the belt guard. Do not take it off. Rocks will get kicked up into the teeth of the lower belt and cause failures.

    I believe they sell a conversion kit not sure tho (belt to chain) keep the belt on it, if it breaks you have a warranty. Once the warranty period is over you might want to consider buying a kit. I'm sure by the time your warranty expires they'll have a perfect kit. A more realistic option would be to take the guard off. If you're worried about the warranty then put it back on if you break the belt. This whole "belt" thing is just an elaborate scheme to get you to keep spending money and it ensures that you'll be giving them your money for as long as you own the bike.

    This reminds me of owning bmw’s. I don’t like payments, so I buy all my cars used. The downside is no warranty. They are great cars, but at any time you had to have $1000-$3000 set aside for repairs. Maintenance wasn’t cheap either, usually running between $500-$1000 every 4 months. I loved the cars, but the headache got to me. It was like I was living in fear. I could afford it, but I was starting to get embarrassed by the constant breakdowns. Well ... on that forum a guy states that Ducati replaced it for free when it started to show wear after 7500 miles... anyway I guess it really depends on where and when you ride... if you ride now and if they use sand/stones on the roads during winter over there in Ohio ... chances are you catch a stone, even on BMW :) (it seems to be pretty simple to replace the belt on F800 DIY, I wouldn't do it on XDiavel S under warranty:D) People also claim that HD has this ironed out - yeah right, wonder how many people ride HDs during winter or on gravel roads... but on the other hand maybe they do :) You'd need a fully enclosed belt drive to be sure you won't catch a stone... in the end, belts can snap, chains can break, shaft drives can strip :) ... I must say though it sounds a bit funny - hearing "it has all the features" and "I don't care for any driver aids" very close to each other:) (get the MT-10 already... or Boneville Bobber or keep the XDiavel S ... do whatever you feel is right :) )

    First year problems are not only for bikes but for any product. That is the Ironing out phase. People who like buying first year anything are the unpaid beta testers who paid top dollar to be the kid on the block who got the shinny new toy before everyone else.
    I rather wait 2 to 3 years. Look at the Nissan GTR after nearly 10 years the car is rock solid and you get a lot of performance for your money. The transmission problems have been ironed out. The interior is more luxury oriented and built for everyday drive.
