This is the best video I've seen on this subject, and I watched many. Wish I had seen it before my surgery. Everything from how to prepare before, during, and after surgery is so clearly explained. Honestly this video should be recommended in the patients care package by any surgeon doing this surgery. Kudos to whom ever did all the work for this video, truly excellent!!

I had my second hip replacement surgery five days ago. Everything is going really well. The first hip replacement was four years ago.

With the stairs exercise I learned it by saying good go to heaven, which obviously means good leg goes up, then bad goes to hell, which it just stays down. You need the good leg to go first so it takes the body weight to get up the stairs and not a lot of weight on the operated leg.

Having been originally scheduled for hip replacement in January this year, this video was not available. However I was sent one from you via email which came out of Vancouver. Due to my surgery being cancelled 3 times, I’d forgotten a lot. I happened upon this one while reviewing the one originally sent. This one is much more in depth. I am now scheduled to have my hip replaced tomorrow (July 6th) and feel as ready as I will ever be. Thank you for all the information. Seems very helpful, albeit somewhat overwhelming. One aid that I’d never heard of and wish I had months ago is the swivel cushion. I think I will have to look into that one (or have my hubby do it for me) post surgery. Thanks again.
Toilet seat extenders, grabbers, gait belt, etc. Wish I had known about these valuable tools before my surgery - had to scramble to acquire them after my surgery. Not one of my providers (pain management, primary care, ortho) recommended these items that greatly improved my quality of life during my recovery. I only learned about these tools two days after my surgery when an Occupational Therapist from the home health company came to visit. I actually could have greatly benefitted from these tools prior to surgery - as a chronic pain patient (soon to be a former chronic pain patient!), these items would have definitely improved my quality of life.
@@jefesalsero So sorry for your unfortunate experience. I had been advised of all of it quite a while prior to surgery. Just not the rotating seat cushion. My husband did get one for me today while I was in surgery. And I will get to try it out tomorrow when I’m discharged. All has gone well and every staff member has been amazing. So very caring. @Star Dog actually pretty good. I had anterior robot assisted replacement. Out of the hospital same day. Not a lot of pain right now about a 4, compared to a constant 9 before surgery. The only thing that really hurts is getting in an out of bed. Physical therapy showed me how to use a gait belt to lift my surgical leg into bed, that helped.

One of the things you should know before hip surgery is that things may not happen according to your expected timeline. One pre-operative lab value (low platelets, low iron, etc.) can cause a delay - no, you won't be seeing the surgeon when you expected, you'll be detoured to an appointment with a Hematologist who then plays a crucial role in whether or not you're getting surgery and when you're having it. This could mean surgery pushed back by weeks or months. Any number of things could occur that might cause a delay in your surgery, including the pace at which your insurance company works in approving the surgery. There is a lot to getting a surgery approved, both clinically and financially, that one may want to consider. Expectations may need to be adjusted and patience with the process is key.
anything pushes mine back and it'll take another year before I get the nerve up to try again. I backed out in 12/20. Now this one is just 8 days away. And I once again want to back out
@@cathyb5759 I did winter etc keeping me from getting mine ! No help at home. Until my daughter gets time off from her job. She’s a RN but this is not her specialty. Afraid I be stuck at home they never shovel where I live or plow. So Spring it will be. But I read some horrid stories 🥹

This is a great video that coincide with my doctors recommendations. I had a hip replacement yesterday and it went well. I am scheduled to have the 2nd one in six weeks. So far so good. Best decision that I've made for my life!

Both my hips need to be replaced to my first one is next week I was thinking to wait until next year for my second one because I'm scared and it isn't as bad as the first one but it's been overworked so maybe sooner.
great video, actually tells all I need to know and yet is just making me want to cancel once again. I cancelled my first one in Dec 2020 and now do to have it in just 8 days ( 12/1/22 ) Actually the pain is on a level of 0 to 3 at best now, tho my plantar facisiitas (sp) has moved to the same side. My right foot is happy though. I know somehow I'll screw this up, by moving the wrong way, out of pure habit. At 61 I still sock skate on my kitchen floor. I walk twice a day , more for to keep my sanity. I guess I still don't have the mindset for it. Prayers to all who might be getting one in the future. @@HorizonNB what about no stays in hospital due to Covid??????????????????? I'm being sent home same day, no one but hired help, not even actual nurses! how do i get my insurance to include real nurses, P Therapists, etc. to come to home to care for me. I'm told I have to pick a home health worker company and allowed only 7 hours per day of care. Last time I had surgery, all types of females came, not dressed professionally, no nursing experience at all, and they stole from me. One asked me to drive her home!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! one couldn't grocery shop or pharmacy shop for me due to loaning her car to her boyfriend! I'm so extremely scared. I don't know what to do.

I had femur head fracture surgery and now at home. Still I am not fine after three months of release from the hospital. Will you please let me know what are those equipments and if I come to know I will try to get it from Amazon.

I’m going on the 18th for my third replacement surgery I had one hip opened twice it got infected. I’m so nervous this sucks but I go into Boston so at least the care is top notch . What I remember about my first surgery was the pain after holy crap the worst pain I ever felt and my blood pressure was so high after they couldn’t give me anymore of the good pain meds so they shot me up with some strong IB profferen. I have one leg that’s over n inch shorter than the other leg and they fixed it the first time and when they went in a few years back when I had the infection and it’s been messed up since but just fix it and move on
I have the feeling that my right leg is shorter than my left, I need right hip replacement soon ...and lately I have been walking crooked and totally out of whack!! Im so scared..because the way I'm walking I will need total hip surgery 😱😱😱😢😢

This was very helpful and will help me prepare long before the surgery, from dietary needs, medical equipment and how to get in and out of the vehicle upon discharge from the hospital.

Is this for post knee or hip surgery? Sounds like post knee...
Im a post acute nursing manager & have few residents who’ve had hip replacement surgery. Multiple factors allow a hospitalized patient to return directly home versus requiring inpatient rehabilitation as a bridge to home. My elective surgery patient does not have family support appears to be a factor requiring post acute rehab/subacute rehab (SAR). A 2nd factor is pre operative physical condition. He admits he was not physically active before surgery. At 200 lb & 5 ft 0in, his Body mass index 39 (high is >30) doesn’t indicate optimal dietary habits. I like this video citing another adverse factor -smoking and nicotine. Perhaps, health and wellness education needs to start earlier in the lifespan? TV needs content that helps us be healthy. On TV I see crime dramas. I look over 6 y/o kids shoulder and see him playing video game with a virtual sub machine gun. Whatever happened to Jack Lalane physical fitness shows or Wonderama TV that guide us more towards health?
To get to work I wear sneakers briefly alternate jogs with walking w/ goal to increase my heart rate ~100. I also do home strength workouts. Push-ups, lat- pulls, dumbbell curls. Core training includes Roman chair/ sit ups etc.
For beverages I only drink water/seltzer water or coffee w/ Splenda sweeteners.
Food- I follow the US dietary plate pie chart. I also saw a Glycemic index food guide covering numerous ethnic cuisines.
My motivation is personal/ I dream of returning to surf. The wave line up and Nature would seem to reward non-obese paddlers for waves. So I am using my athletic interest to keep me healthy- otherwise I have FOMO( fear of missing out) on a wave to someone more fit than me at 57 y/o (BMI 23.5), 😂 .
Bottom line, nature will also reward lifetime healthy physically fit pre operative patients. The post operative physical therapy is just another medical version of exercise. Parents should rear their young early in healthy lifestyle- natural hip degeneration/fall fracture is destiny for some of us.

In QUBEC ONE goes home the same day. If done privately in a center one stays another day.

I think they said that because it's up to us to decide if we want to get the surgery done or not. (Once we are eligible for it) for instance, right now I am eligible to get it done. I have seen the surgeon and had the x rays, I am in pain, mobility is compromised, and doctor said yes I am eligible to get it done. But at the end of the day it is up to me to when I am ready to get it done. No one is making me do it. It's my choice.
It isn't a life saving procedure.
But It is definitely a "quality of life" saving procedure though. Otherwise people would end up in a wheelchair.
I am sure some choose not to get the surgery. My father has major hip problem and struggles to get around using a walking frame. He chooses not to get the surgery though. He's 88 years old. No one is making him get it done.
Today is 5 days since surgery......everything is going well except sleeping, my normal sleep position is on my surgical side....started sleeping in my recliner....although not ideal it seems to be helping.

I am watching this video, and it scares me real bad. I have 2 bad knees, and bad right hip. I watched the stairs thing, and it would be very hard for me to do. My left knee is real bad, and it would be the right hip. I would not be able to use the left leg for the support as they say to do. I have a bad spine also. The whole thing seems unreal for me to be able to do, and for how long, Problem is support at home. I was wondering if anybody had similar issues.
I would think things get more complicated if someone has multiple joint issues and more than one health concern.
I had both my knees replaced over a decade ago at the same time because Both were equally bad. I basically didn't have a good leg to stand on. It was very difficult and extremely painful.
now I need my hip to be done. My knees are ok but I still get some slight pain in them, and soreness I just think it's soft tissue pain That's what my rheumatologist says.
I have rheumatoid arthritis and osteo arthritis and fibro. And it's just this juggling act to do things. My shoulder hurts too. And I have arthritis in my lower back too. My feet, hands.
So I understand when there's multiple joint issues. It's not easy. And many people do not understand.
I do not know what the answer would be for you. I am sorry.
I would think it's something you would have to talk with a surgeon about in detail. And they would advise you what joint to do first.
If you have insurance and you don't have help at home. And have difficult situation. You may be able to go to a rehab facility after the surgery and be taken care of for the first couple of weeks.
I am blessed to have at least one person to help when I have surgery. but I know many who don't. They pay someone, pay a service. Like comfort keepers, or visiting angels.
or reach out to people in the community, church. Etc.
I can imagine it is very hard and lonely for some who struggle wth these things on their own.
I am with someone and still find it hard as he is working a lot and I do as much as I can myself as I don't like to bother him. And I don't have friends around here as we moved. And so I'm on my own a lot.
It sounds like you need to get at least one joint done and somehow get through it.
If you feel you have weight to lose, try and lose some weight as that will help for surgery and does take stress off the joints. Physical therapy can be helpful for arthritis.
I hope you find answers and get the help you need.

Check out hip resurfacing first, the criteria to get this procedure is more strict , but no precautions after to speak of .Hospital Special Surgery NYC is the best im getting my surgery this week
Hope the surgery went well and you'll be recovering step by step pretty well.
I'm also in NY State and will take resurfacing procedure in September. I live by my own without any family or friends support so that I'll be looking for some caregiver support for at least the first 4 weeks.

I wish this was more about hip replacement than knee as there are different precautions postoperatively.
I thought this is about the hip they just put a bandage by the knee so you know which is the surgical leg. Every thing about sitting sleeping knees being below your hip the cushion for chairs if they are not the right size is all to to with hip surgery, maybe there is a lot in common with the knee idk, but I've been reading and watching a lot I have surgery next month on my hip so I'm trying to get as much info as possible

@@karishort1891 it went pretty good all things considered! as a frame of reference: i'm 23, overweight and out of shape admittedly, walked with a cane for 12 years, and needed the surgery to fix a birth defect + the arthritis that resulted from it. so i wasn't exactly primed for surgery, but still found that my recovery and when i hit certain milestones lined up with the rough estimations usually given by doctors for hip replacements and other people's recovery stories that i read online
i found the first two weeks were the worst of it pain-wise, which seems to be the common consensus. i used a walker for the first 10 days, then migrated to a cane for a bit, and come two weeks post surgery, give or take a few days, i was able to walk on my own unassisted, just using walls/furniture/etc. to keep myself steady. i had my replacement on august 31st, and as of right now i am walking better than every with very limited, manageable pain. if you want to know anything specific please let me know! in the meantime i'll just jot down a few things that come to mind that helped me out during recovery ❤️
- if your neighbour is deciding between a 4-wheeled or 2-wheeled walker, i'd recommend the 2. i used both but found the 2-wheeled to feel much sturdier and i had the same amount of mobility as when i was using the 4-wheeled one (also get tennis balls to put on the back legs to reduce scuffing your floors up!)
- i didn't buy some myself, but i'd suggest getting a few pairs of grippy socks especially since it's getting colder - the hospital provided me with a pair during my brief stay and they were very handy for not slipping! if your neighbour doesn't like them, for around the house i walked in my bare feet. just walking in socks alone is a big no, and i never wore slippers so i can't say personally but it's recommended not to wear anything with an open back or that are loose on your feet
- i experienced a lot of wound leakage, which is totally normal but a huge hassle, especially if the bandage isn't sealed on properly and, y'know, leaks everywhere. it's going to sound funny, but i actually bought some of those blue puppy pads to sit under my butt as a precaution wherever i sat/on my bed and it saved me from a lot of potential messes!
- when the time comes that your neighbour is able to walk around their home without any mobility equipment, i'd still recommend using a cane while they're out and about at least for a few days. one of my biggest struggles during my recovery was feeling off-balance, so having a cane to keep me steady really helped me in that department
- having a back-scratcher was a godsend and i cannot stress this enough lol. you're not allowed to twist or bend much for a while post-op, so i'd definitely tell your neighbour to get one

@@karishort1891 @Kari Short no problem! and unfortunately i can't say much about driving, since i don't have a license. but! i read up a bit more about it and it's wholly dependent on what leg he would be having done - if it's the left, they say about 2 weeks or so, but if it's the right being replaced then it could be upwards of 4 weeks/a month before he can safely go behind the wheel again. i'd recommend him to ask what his surgeon's opinion on the whole matter is just to be sure though! and thank you so much! 💕
Why is this titled about a hip replacement surgery when the patient in the video had knee replacement surgery
You weren't listening. That bandage is to indicate which hip joint was operated on.
Unfortunately someone else thought the same thing and this has given me so much great information for my hip replacement surgery next month.... it would have really helped them prepare better in what to do and not do

Talk to your doctor. I know that the anterior approach is a better surgery with no cutting of muscles or ligaments and you heal quicker. I will have my anterior surgery in April. Good luck.

I'm finally going to have re-surfacing procedure that implies posterior incision. Scheduled for September.

I think stem cell therapy. Would have to pay out of pocket.
They take stem cells and inject into the area and whatever cartilage there is left it can make it regenerate. I know that's available for knees. I know someone who had it done for her knee and paid a few thousand dollars for it.
It helped her to prolong having knee replacement but eventually she still had to have the surgery. I think the stem cell therapy worked only temporary for her. Not sure of her whole story.
But there's information online about stem cell therapy.
I would try it if it was affordable.
Unfortunately I had both my knees replaced and now my hip is causing issues.

@@jesusiswithme247clr yeah I had to as both my hips collapsed...I posted this 1 year back. 1 month after the operation I ended up with an ischemic stroke! The right side complete paralysis - what a joke of fate!

No one gave excersized just said walk around. 3 days post op..feeling like crap swelling and cant even make it to the bathroom...discharged day 2..its stupid.
If they offer a general anesthesia take it!!!!! Trust me!!!!!!

@@billchambersmarquez1964 I’ve had two spinal sin the last ten months for hip replacements,not a problem with either,in fact simple as pie.

I had the worst anesthesiologist my back is in constant pain after the first 2 times he couldn't get it right I told him give me a general he refused and kept trying and he hit a spot that the numbing shot didn't reach I moved and he got furious with me for moving my blood pressure went sky high and the orthopedic Dr was furious with the anesthesiologist because he had to postpone my surgeries

Exceptionally informative and comprehensive video! But I cannot understand why quite a few members of the care team, as well as the patients don't wear face masks, given it is filmed during the pandemic. It's a safety issue, in my country this similar lack of precautions in the medical settings is worrying. A maskless patient may introduce the virus to the medical team who will in turn may infect other patients.
Hi Ina, the filming began before the pandemic, that's why in some scenes people aren't wearing masks, but in most scenes they are.

Funny, they do not keep at the hospital for days anymore. I will have hip surgery. Out the same day or if I am lucky, the next. No packing for me.
It does seem to be like that these days... get you up & outta there to get the bed ready for the next client! I dont know if its the same as it was 40 years ago when you have a baby in hospital... they let you have a couple of days recuperating & someone else worried about cleaning up the dirty nappies for you until you went home (to all that nappy washing in them good ol days)! None of that hard yakka nappy washing these days. 😄

not what it used to be, in fact it’s going down the drain. People are paying for their own

My surgery is October 26th and I am nervous I don’t like needles so and I am type one diabetic and over weight I am freaking out inside
I’ve had one hip replacement and on the 21st the second one, I hear what your saying, the best thing to do is WALK afterwards. Do the exercises, you will find that the pain is nothing like what you have now, ( mine is extreme). Remember to deep breathe and put yourself in a good place, don’t look at the needles…I hope you have a good friend to stay with and comfort your fears.
I’m having trouble hip replacement on October 26 as well. I’m kinda freaking out too. I did have knee surgery in June and it’s working great.

Who would wanna be awake for the surgery what the hell . Trust me don’t you don’t wanna see what there doing that would be hell . I remember coming out of surgery and there waking me up and I was jammed they gave me phyntenal yea I was jammed city she asked what I saw I thought I was a bee 🐝 flying in the hive and woke up to the lady asking me questions haha then the wife took a pic and I had a huge smile with the thumbs up👍🏻. Don’t skip your meds at least for a couple days last time I had it done on Monday and stopped taking the meds on Wednesday it’s a slippery slope with opioids so the quicker I was off the better . Oh yea the last time I get home and I’m walking into the living room on my crutches and I say to wife I feel dizzy? Then I wake up she’s screaming the kid is crying and I hear her say I can’t get him off me . I passed out from dehydration and luckily I didn’t hurt the hip and it took 8 firefighters to get me out onto the stretcher . She said I was fighting with them cause I just wanted to lay down ? I don’t remember that but my doctor said if they laid me down I would of been fine and they could of gave me some fluids so it is what it is . That was another day in the hospital sucked so drunk your fluids
Don’t be hesitant in asking for the pain relief after surgery, they ask you 1 -10 what level shout 15 hahah what a relief when the painkillers kick in and get some sleep,

The surgery wasn't on the knee. The dressing on the knee is to indicate which hip was operated on.

Information is about hip surgery but the video shows that man had a knee surgery??? Both r not same knee surgery is very painful compared to the hip.Depends person to person too.
They said in the beginning that the bandage on the knee is just there to illustrate the operated side
They have tape on the knee to indicate the hip that has surgery.
That's a KNEE incisino not the hip.
If it is hip replacement, why the dude has dressing applied to the knee?

I'm always amazed that nurses, who you would think you would no better, are overweight in such large numbers.
I'm here to report to the American people and the rest of my family worldwide that the constructs of joint replacements should have never never never been allowed to occur let alone flourish without questioning authority pain is always normal and natural always muscular always psychological always mental and when we get enough sleep our body automatically heals cures pain like it's supposed to.
