I want to thank you for all your videos,I am going to have femur fracture surgery with in the next couple of weeks.,so therefore your teaching me just what I need to know.Thank you again.
Very true and thoroughly explained. I'll be having my surgery in one month, and I'm practicing every day, I know the pain of the surgery is not there, but it is something that I have to keep in mind. Hope is not worse than when I broke my ankle. Thank you
Your videos are very informative. I've been needing a total hip replacement since 2019. I didn't get this done because of Covid-19 it wasn't done. Now, I'm struggling a lot more with my walking on my right hip. Now I'm having a problem with my left hip acting the same way, starting in 2023. It's very hard for me to lose the weight, when I'm struggling with pain all the time. I'll be seeing my doctor in March in hopes of getting this surgery done this year.
6:59 pm I had a hip replacement surgery a week back and now i am home doing my PT, all your vedios has helped me a lot to do my daily course of action, thank u so much, God bless you 🙏
Thanks for bringing up the ‘side lean’ to wipe! I have a standard toilet so it’s low but I’m 5ft1 barely. We did buy the arms. Arrived today and I was so relieved as I had no way to get myself lowered or rise without putting myself in danger. This is a hip revision I just had after a hip replacement was done in March! I’d had 2 dislocations in between. Everything’s terrifying me to death now, and…. My shoulders and Left knee are replacements as well. My surgeon and team say, ‘no restrictions’ ( anterior) but how can that be?! All I read is don’t do this, don’t do that….. the side lean is appreciated thanks again!🙏
Thank you so much for these really helpful videos! Could you also share some tips for those that recover from a bilateral/double hip replacement, please?
I’m having hip replacement surgery in 2 days my biggest issue is making it to the bathroom in time without having using it on myself. Just concerned about the length of time to get out of bed then get to the bathroom and remembering to do all the steps you suggest. I really have anxiety about it
Really pertinent question. I have incontinence and will either order a commode for next to the bed, or buy very fluffy padded Depends to wear so I can make it 5-6steps to the bthrm w/out soiling myself.
Found having a picker upper is great for getting ur under wear up without bending is super handy and works extremely well for just about picking up anything on the floor .
Greatly appreciate all your videos helping to prepare me for my hip surgery coming up at the end of this month. A lot of very useful information, thank you so much.
So what do you do if you don’t have those handles on the toilet? I have an 18 inch high toilet but there’s no handles or countertop on either side of the toilet
Is there a toilet riser you can recommend for an elongated toilet? I'm having hip replacement surgery and I'm gaining a lot of information from your videos.
I am going to have my hip replacement in about a month. We have already installed ADA toilets and walk in showers with fold down benches and hand held showers in both bathrooms. I am 5'7". Is there anything additional I should do in the bathrooms?
My surgery is in July. I'm going to build my own porta pottie that's tall enough for me with handles. 5 gallon catch bucket underneath. Also building a riser for my lazy boy chair. Only a few items I will buy.
How do you turn the walker to get out of the bathroom? My bathroom is tiny like the one in your video. I can touch the door frame and sink counter without leaning.
Side step, which is not optimal or easy, but the only way to move in a tight bathroom with a full size walker. The alternative is a smaller walker option like a hemi-walker that you use in the bathroom only.
Interesting, I'm going in for hip replacement in 3 weeks, was just looking at how things will function after. Curious about the extended leg vs bending your knee and having reduced angle with knee below the seat, I have a short rise at home. I'm 6'1" and it's currently painful for hip to be less than 90 degrees, haven't been able to tie my shoe on that side in 15 years. I'm sure I'll get added info both pre and post op, but thought I'd ask for your input. I'm sure it's not as possible for shorter people and perhaps it draws the tendons in the hip too much and won't be possible post op?
My bathroom is tiny. I couldn’t have the walker point forward when moving between sink and bath to get to the toilet. Can you use the walker to ‘side walk’?
I have a lisfranc injury on my right foot from mid-Feb. of this year and a a hip fracture on my left hip from April 15, also of this year. It's impossible to do this toileting procedure as shown in the video as my hip-fractured left leg is my "good" leg as I must not put any weight on the right lisfranc foot. I'm trying very hard to follow all the rules, but it's very difficult, if not impossible.
Have you tried using a bidet? I have some video setups that would accommodate a hands free toileting. It might be a good option for you right now. I’m sorry your having a tough recovery 😕
Thanks for great video. How do we decide how much higher we need the seat? Our toilet is 17.5" from floor to top of seat. My leg is 16" from floor to under side of leg. Could I get by with just a adjustable "Toilet Seat Safety rail" ?
Yes, I think you will prefer going with just the safety rail. Too much height can make toileting difficult and your toilet is already at a good comfort height.
Hello. I am a retired OT in Tasmania. Your state equipment scheme is probably your first option. www.health.vic.gov.au/supporting-independent-living/victorian-aids-and-equipment-program
Not uncommon in many bathrooms. As long as you keep the hip at 90 degrees of flex you will be ok. Some will even angle slightly on the toilet to give a little more space to extend the leg.
@@EquipMeOT Thank you for responding. I have to get both hips replaced. I just tested your video to see in my bathroom and that's what I noticed I could not extend my leg out to far because of bathtub being in the way. I am not going to lie I am scared about all this hip replacement situation. I have appointment on March 28 to let the Dr know I have decided to go with it. Thank you!!
You can also bend your knees more! It will be a bit awkward at first, but if it really isn’t working you may find comfort investing in a padded drop ark commode that could be placed anywhere and set at the perfect height.
I’d need a bit more info on the type of diagnosis or what physical limitations are present. If they require moderate assistance, I’d bet they need someone to provide a boost when coming to a stand which would require a gait belt but also added height and hand rails or grab bars if they have enough upper body strength to assist. A caregiver training video would be a good addition to this library!
It is my understanding that most bilateral hip replacements are done in a way (anterior versus posterior approach) that does not include the same level of strict precautions. You will need to clarify with your surgeon, but I believe you will still benefit from some raised height of seated surfaces for comfort but don’t have to be quite as diligent about preventing bends beyond 90 degrees.
Lucy, I'm an in between cleaner as well as a big girl. How did you manage taking care of your toilet needs if you don't mind my asking? This I feel is going to be my biggest hurdle after my surgery.
Great video. It points to not seeing what is perfectly obvious. The lack of assistive props is glaring. You laud the stable hand rest sink. That thin pointy thing? All throne side sinks should have carved wood grips. Use pool noodles or pipe insulators…split and mounted over that granite. Make two tiered, chose the height for where you feel like gripping. If you are renting, you don’t want to go through walls, but a freestanding handrail can be made. Vevor has well made handrail. Attach to 2 x 4 mounted to floor stand which can be moved later. Says here, too far away from the wall for a safety grab bar. No. Use another kind. Often found for hot tubs or pools, the curved safety handrail will work. These are pricey, but buy it once. We are so pathetically behind on these home accommodations. No forethought, no design. A simple ballfield injury, we all need an assist. It wouldn’t be an assist if we built it right with good design.
@Wayne Thompson Hello there. Just wanted to see how you're doing since your surgery. I truly hope all is going well. I'm scheduled to have mine on 11-17 and I'm so nervous worrying about all the precautions for not bending past 90 degrees and how to take care of my toilet needs safely. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Your way of showing how an older woman would really have to wipe herself from the front instead of behind like you show without having to bend the forbidden 90° is totally unrealistic 😮
@@RamonaRayTodosSantosBCS I kept postponing the surgery waiting for a miracle. I damaged my GI with the pain killers. It’s almost been a year post surgery and now I ride my bike and go to the gym and do the elliptical with no problem at all. However, it was a very tough recovery for me.
