  • In order to discover what might be the best stubby screwdriver handle, I had to let nature create one the lab and then look for a real example in the wild. This is what happened.

Doc, your dream has come true - Wera make a stubby bit holder rated against ESD (electrostatic discharge) and it's orange! Part number: 008881

ideal: continues steel from shaft to a metal back dumple for fingertip spinning and some hammering ability. A small diameter portion on for fast spinning, and a reasonable large portion for torque , and a hex portion on the shank for wrench assist. hard materials that don't get gummy and easy to clean.

Tekton's High Torque handles are triangular and feel pretty nice in the hand.

I do like Wera. I have not yet picked up the ratcheting stubby. I'll put it on my wish-list though.

Wiha makes a very short stubby that takes 1/4 hex bits with bit storage inside the handle.

Great idea Doc with the clay! Do you own any Vessel screwdrivers? They have handles almost identical to your clay handle, with INCREDIBLE materials! I would love to see you do driver bit comparisons (different bits and their uses)! 😎

Yea those wood handle Vessels with the black shank are beautiful, but IMO the old made in USA Craftsman are the best dollar for value screw drivers. They are well made and tough.

Harbor Freight has an option, very similar to the clay design for 4.99. I have the snap on hard handle as well but sometimes the cheap one is a better option.

Good day, nice and informative video!
Could you tell me which handle you prefer between de Wera stubby bit holder without carousel and the one with carousel? I'm having a lot of doubt between the two..
    Greetings from the Netherlands.

That would be perfect for my compact tool set...if it had the ratchet mechanism.

Had you tried any of the snap on like screwdrivers, like the gear wrench? You know, with the 1/4 ball end ratchet like shaft.

Wiha do one in a soft grip with or without a bit magazine, very similar to the wera.I find the grip better on the without as its a solid grip.

Thanks Martin. I just ordered one with a bit magazine. I'm curious about both the increase in rubbery surface compared to the Wera, and if I run it without bits if it's significantly lighter. And heavier with bits.

    JB WELD Epoxy Putty Stix
    Paintable....
    Also for plastic and wood.
Theres a ton of videos on it...
Get some old screwdrivers and ratchets....cut em down.
And mold your own handles and make your own recon kits.

The funny thing is the shape you made with the dough looks more like the pb Swiss stubby than the wera stubby. I absolutely hate wera handles. After getting the pb stubby I won’t use anything else now

vessel stubby might be a good answer. but it's too complicating to order.

Mold a Handle from Epoxy Putty...on the tools you dont like. Then dip em.
    Check out the video...
Which Epoxy Putty Works Best by Project Farm.
    For various applications.
And dip the handle in colored rubber.
    Problem solved.
That way you can still use the tools you already have money invested in.
Just remove the old handle or modify the one already on it.
By molding more epoxy around it.
    And then dip it.
Thats 90 percent the reason I don't use tools in the first place.
