    I have made this comment before on your channel, but I will make it again. It feels like if you’re a type of guy that works at a stationary position like a mechanic or something. The push button adjustment is preferred. I don’t know any plumbers that prefer it though. I’ve got 12 guys employed under me and everybody uses alligators and literally all of us can’t stand the push button. A plumber who uses slip joints pliers a lot can easily open them all the way up or close them with one hand. I absolutely hate having to bring my secondhand in to either open it all the way or close it. Plus, it’s still faster if I use two hands with the alligator style. I would reckon no one uses that style of plier more than plumbers and everyone I know prefers the alligator style to the Cobra style. Try to use it when you’re laying on your back working under a sink and I promising you will prefer the alligator.

      Very much agree. I also find the cobras adjustment is TOO fine. I rarely get the position right on the first try and have to move it one notch bigger or smaller almost every time. With normal channelocks, I can guess the position I need most of the time with having the jaws on the fitting

    I shouldn’t be watching this video. I could talk for hours about slip joint pliers. Those blue handle channellock brand are god-awful. For a long time everybody liked using the10”- rigid, Douglas, reed, or Wilde, and that was about it. Everything else was absolute shit. The channel lock Brand really did suck because it was just a pain in the ass to adjust. I think for a long time the yellow handled Douglas was like the primo brand for most plumbers because they were the easiest to adjust with one hand and didn’t seem to get all locked up like some of the other shitty brands. Whenever we found out about the knipex alligator there was no going back to even the Douglas though.

    Doc, in addition to what you did here would be to look at strength - maybe a job for the @Torque Test channel. But specifically 400 mm range with the Knipex Alligator and Cobra, Channel Lock, and maybe anything in this class made by Snap-on®. Both jaw strength, and hinge mechanism pivot strength.

      @nachoisme หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      They are stronger than anything you can do by hand. All bets off or you start using machinery or extensions like a breaker bar

    I doubt that situations like this are likely to happen even so it's still usable abet more work. I appreciate the hands on demo as opposed to your ussal format defently makes things more entertaining. I would think I would have a crocks wipe or a rag in that situation glad I'm not a pipe fitter or a plumber for sure. I use to repair greasy 480v cnc machines (computer retrofit) from the 1940s though 1980s and never ran into a situation a 12 or 16in knipex couldn't handle.

    The only advantage to the alligator that I know of is the lack of the button. On fairly rare occasions (usually when you are trying to use two wrenches on hydraulic fittings, for instance) the button can get pressed by something when starting the pull, and that can be annoying. I love my cobras, and I have everything from the tiny pocket one to the big-daddy, but when I am, for instance, trying to remove a conduit lock-ring in the middle of a panel, the button can suck.

    • @nachoisme
      @nachoisme หลายเดือนก่อน

      Don’t get the quick sets. Button protrudes more and the quick portion is pretty finicky. At least for now but maybe I will learn the tool better over time

    I'm wondering what that small indent is for? It looks like an eye for an alligator's face.

      That is actually a part of the forging process you’ll see it on every cobra and alligator plier. Something to do with holding the pliers up without touching them so my guess is that specifically it’s for dipping the handles?

    Not really sure what this showed us. Maybe some grease with a little bit of sand grit would be a better real-life test. Even when doing repairs to hoses, irrigation, and outside plumbing, I don't get my knipex in that kind of muck. I've been a auto mechanic, an aviation mech, a house builder and a maintenance tech, never worked in those conditions, even on my boat at the lake. Plus, they pliers took it rather well, I didn't see that one had much of an advantage or the others , except for a momentary glitch.

      You think maybe he shouldn't have made this video or done it the way you would? I disagree, it's widely known in the tool community that for dirty conditions the Alligators were a better option compared with Cobras. Well this video showed that both designs performed about the same and that the Cobra design with extra parts and finer adjustments didn't cease up or fail to operate. Sure it was extreme dirt but by doing it that way it's demonstrates wether or not dirt will be a problem. I thought it was a good video.

      @aussiehardwood6196 you like the test.... because it was a good test? Or because it validifies your opinions...at least in your mind, it does? I'm just wondering. Plus...I was simply commenting about the video. I didn't say he should not have done it, nor did I say he should do it my way. I said I'm not sure if we learned anything from it. If it makes you feel better, I'll change it to.... I'm not sure I learned anything...feel better butter cup.
