Looked into JIS a few years back, turns out the standard had been dropped for some time, with a statement along the lines that modern manufacturing is good enough for PH bits to not need JIS any longer. There might still be places that make JIS specific driver though.

I've heard this for several years now, but the JIS screwdrivers I have from Hozan and Vessel are a dream to use on normal Phillips fasteners. The engagement is super tight and feels premium just like LBT's talk of slack (or lack there of) in the more expensive watchets. I'd be delighted of something like the Wiha he's mentioned has that kind of engagement, but I'm very doubtful.

I assembled two RC car kits from Tamiya (japanese company). My standard PH bits were not working so well. Bought a JIS Vessel screwdriver and it's really the only screwdriver I own that fits those screws like they were made for it. So the story that JIS specific screws are a thing of the past, I don't believe it.
Edit: Both kits have markings that they have been manufactured in 2022.

JIS and Phillips were merged into one standard ISO 8764 in 2008. It is generically labeled Phillips. However not all manufacturers follow ISO 8764. Vessel follows this standard.

I like the LTT screwdriver so much I have a second one (one black top, one orange top) on the way and I have ordered the entire additional bit sets for both screwdrivers. I keep the extra bits in an opaque white (not the blue one) .22 ammo box from Amazon “US-Deals .22 Ammo Case 100 Round Box .22 LR .25 ACP”. Save the white bit chart that comes with the LTT screwdriver and cut it down so it fits in the top of the .22 ammo case. You’ll have to cut off the part on the chart with the Phillips bits but who needs directions on what size is your Phillips bits? I then took a piece of lined paper and sketched out each row starting at the top and working my way down so each row in the .22 ammo box matched the LTT chart. I used /////////// to symbolize where I had open spots with no bits in the ammo box. I used clear shipping tape to seal up the two charts back to back to protect them from dirt and grease.. Before you throw away your Amazon cardboard box cut a square so it fits in the top of the plastic box to keep the bits from rattling around. You’ll have to make four little snips in the cardboard to match the top of the plastic lid so the cardboard fits snug. EZ peezy.
